How often to put computer to sleep?

Dumb question maybe but is it good or not to put the computer in sleep mode when away? I tend to do that all the time, assuming it's always good to stop those hard drives from unnecessarily running, etc. Then again maybe starting them up and stopping them this frequently is worse? I'd say I put the computer into sleep mode five or six times a day then during the night.
Thanks.
John

Hard drives are usually rated for at least 25,000 start/stop cycles, so sleeping 5 or 6 times a day should not be a problem.

  • Energy saver does not put computer to sleep

i have a new 15 inch macbook pro running 10.6.4. When the energy saver (i have checked all the proper buttons putting computer to sleep after 5 minutes of non use) puts the computer to "sleep" it actually does not sleep...it appears to sleep but the sleep light says illuminated (instead of pulsing) and then eventually the computer battery is drained and the computer needs a hard restart. All other sleep methods properly put it to sleep from choosing from the apple menu to shutting the lid...I assume there might be some program that is running in the background but when i look at console activity i see nothing noted...any thoughts as to how to solve this problem? thanks

If you can't find a way to leave the computer on with the lid closed but want to increase the screen's life, you could always leave the lid open and set the brightness to 0 (effectively turning the screen off).

  • Put computer to sleep and now it wont wake up

Last night i set up my new desktop and i program it to need a password every time i need to login. so when i put my computer to sleep last night and when i got up this morning it wont wake up. I turned it off and restarted it but when i turned it back on my monitor said that it has no signal, my mouse and keypad isn't working. What can i do to make everything work again

Look at the back of the monitor and check video connections. You should only have 1 video cable connected. You just have to choose from VGA, DVI or HDMI.

  • How to put computer to sleep or reset USB bus from Terminal?

I'm using Missing Sync to connect a Windows Mobile PocketPC to my Mac for synchronizing data. Occasionally, as soon as I plug in the USB cable, the whole system gets hung. My mouse and keyboard don't work, but I can get into the system via SSH from another machine. Once I'm in, is there anything I can do that's more graceful than using the button on the front of the Mac to shut it off? For example, can I get it to sleep (and then wake up) from terminal? Maybe that will reset things. Or maybe there's a way to re-init the USB bus from terminal. Any suggestions? I hate shutting it off via the button - what's the better way, once it gets hosed like that?
    Mike

There may be other processes you can kill instead (or in addition), but without
seeing more about the state of the machine it's hard to tell.
what information would you want to see about the state of the machine? Is there something in the console log that I can post? I'd like to be ready with all of the possible KILLs when this happens again... In general, what processes do I kill to reset stuff without a hard reset? Logging me out of the account is fine; a graceful software reboot is ok too - I just hate the cold shutdown from the power button.
    Thanks!

  • Shuffle puts computer to sleep?

I purchased the shuffle for my husband for Christmas. It initially worked, but now, when I put it on the dock, the computer basically goes to sleep and won't wake up. The monitor goes to sleep and the only way to get the computer to work is to unplug it and turn it back on.
Anyone else have or hear of this problem? Any ideas for how to fix?
(Note: we tried a different dock with the same results. Also, this problem does not occur when I plug in my Nano.)
    Thanks!

This also happens to me but only occasionally and my monitor stays on. I also have to unplug it in order to successfully restart it.
I haven't been able to determine exactly how to make it happen but it always occurs when I'm plugging my shuffle in to the dock. When it does happen, the power light on the front of my PC goes off and although the monitor stays on, the cursor is locked. I went as far as replacing the PC's power supply but that did not help.
It'd be great to find a solution for this, especially since we just got a second shuffle for my wife.

  • Encore cs5 putting computer in sleep mode

    hey all
new to the forum and need a little help please
i recently updated my creative suite cs3 to the new masters cs5
i'm more a photographer and don't do a lot of video.
I recently have decided to teach myself wih alot of help from tutorials to use premiere pro and encore.
i have managed to make a project with premiere that i'm happy with and i simply wanted to export to dvd
so i send it to encore put the project in the timeline and set the end action to chapter one.
next i choose build and check the settings i want.
now after about 3-5 minutes of encore doing it's thing the computer simply goes to sleep and no way to wake it up.
i have set all my power options on hard disc, monitor, cpu etc. to never go to sleep and it still happens
i even let it run while doing other things on the computer and it still goes to sleep.
    my machine
    windows 7 x64
    intel i7
    nvidia 9800gtx+
    12gb ram
    WD raptor hard drive
i'd like to think that my computer specs are reasonable and shouldn't be causing the problem.
i'll also mention that the CS5 suite was installed on a clean windows installation.
would really apretiate any help as this is driving me crazy. I did a google search but didnt find any answers with my problem.
Found a lot of discussions about encore not launching and crashing but i dont have that issue...just the darned thing going to sleep
    thanks in advance

Though written more for NLE work, than authoring, there are strong similarities between the two operations, this ARTICLE might offer some tips on getting one's machine ready for the intense work required from either editing or authoring.
Now, and with that said, John T's comment on heat buildup is the most common cause of such issues. One little utility that might be of help is SpeedFan, linked in this ARTICLE (along with some other great utilities). I would also look into addressing any/all cooling issues. Things like dust buildup, lack of proper fans, lack of proper air-flow, etc., can be major contributors and MUST be addressed. Within logical levels, one can never have their computer run too cool.
Other possible causes can be bad RAM (there are RAM testing utilities in that linked article), or a PSU that is too weak, improperly hooked up, or going bad, or a MoBo going bad.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - along with those tutorials, I have one recommendation: Jeff Bellune's great book, The Focal Easy Guide to Adobe EncoreDVD 2.0, Focal Press. He covers about 95% of all that you will need to know with Encore. The only omissions will be BD and ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link), as they were added later. Still, that book will become your prime reference. Amazon has it, and should be available in OZ, though I do not know that for a fact.

  • How wake up the computer from sleep

I have an HPE Pavilion h8-1100z, 64 bit, running Win 7. When the computers goes to sleep, I have problems waking it up. I have tried pressing various keys but nothing happens. Microsoft says to check the computer manual but I don't see anything in the manual which tells me what to do. I end up turning the computer off.

    Guinniegirl, welcome to the forum.
I suggest changing the power settings: Start / Control Panel / Power Options.  In the left column there are different categories for making the computer Sleep.  Check the settings to assure they are to your liking.  You can change any of the settings to "Never" if you choose to do so.

I have put my Mac to sleep by pressing command, option & the eject key. Screen goes blank/dark compter a sleep.  I have noticed this not longer works.  The screen goes blank but come right back on.  Has that command been eliminated in recent 'upgrades'?

Not if the whole machine goes to sleep as opposed to only the display; open the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences to view and change the settings.

  • How Do You Put Computer BACK To...

    Its factory settings?
I am giving my daughter my 10 month old imac G5-17", so I can buy the 20" new one that is out.
how do I erase everything, passwords, adminastrors etc.
I do not want any of my bank accounts to come up.
I also tryed to transfer with the firewall cable "between mac's" and I cannot find everything? any ideas?
thanks so much for your help!!!
    ~Janet

    Hi Janet:
Let me try to understand what you would like to transfer. Any transfering of information must be done before you restore your iMac back to factory settings. You mentioned you tried to use a firewire cable between macs. Am I to understand that you already have your new one. If not, are you trying to copy all your stuff (your home folder) to another Mac until your new one arrives. The answers to these questions will dictate what your next step will be.
I do this sort of thing on a daily basis as I manage over 400 Mac computers for a school. If you prefer, you may email me privately. I will be more than happy to help ([email protected]).

  • I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.  I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion.

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!
