How outlook choose a CAS server

Hi all,
I would like to ask how outlook choose a CAS server? For example, if I have 2 sites to deploy exchange server, 1 in hk 1 in russia. How would outlook choose to connect to which CAS server for exchange 2010. For exchange 2013, should it be connected
to the active mailbox database copy? Thanks
Best Regards,
Elroy

Hi,
Client Access Server for Outlook provides the Autodiscover service, Web services (Autodiscover, availability and OAB) and RPC over HTTPS.
Outlook 2007 first searches for the SCP in AD which contains the URL to the Autodiscover service, if more than one SCP object is found in Active Directory which means there are mulitiple CAS servers in the Exchange organization. It will sort the list of
available SCPs by Site Affinity that match the site the Outlook's mailbox is located in. One of two lists is created, an in-site list or an out-of-site list. The list is not sorted in any particular order which is approximately in the order of oldest SCP records
(based on creation date) first. This is not related to the proximity. However, when retrieving the Web service (availability and OAB), It will decide which entry to return based on proximity and current availability. That means to contact Autodiscover maybe
use CAS which integrated with mailbox, and must use the CAS when retrieving other services.
Network Load Balancing is a supported method of doing this.
If there are mulitple CAS servers, for Outlook Anywhere (not logged into the domain), to even out the work load across multiple CAS servers which could offer Autodiscover services
Thanks & Regards
John Chris

    Hi paul440,
    Thank you for your question.
If we have configured autodiscovery correctly, outlook will connect Exchange CAS server by autodiscovery, autodiscovery will direct outlook to connect correct CAS server by user’s mailbox location. For Example, if the user mailbox located on Exchange 2010,
outlook will connect Exchange 2010 CAS. if the user mailbox located on Exchange 2013, outlook will connect Exchange 2013 CAS.

  • How to choose a right server for Oracle Database!

    Hi all,
Is there any formular that allows me to find the appropriate server configuration for Oracle database 11g?
    Please help!
    Thank you all.

    Simply put ... no.
Determining the correct server is a dance between hardware vendors (one point of input to be treated with general distrust), internal expertise and experience working with similar systems, and most importantly understanding the behaviour of what you are building.
Here are some sample questions to start the ball rolling.
    1. What operating system expertise does your organization have?
    2. What operating system expertise is readily available in the community from which you hire applicants?
    3. What type of application?
    4. What are up-time expectations?
    5. Requirements for high availability?
    6. Requirements for time to perform a full recovery?
    7. Requirements for security?
    8. Storage footprint (dictates internal storage versus SAN, NAS, or ZFS)
    9. Anticipated growth (3-7 years)
Everyone wants to sell you CPU clock-ticks, more RAM, more IOPS, etc. But the first thing you need to understand is the capabilities you require that are generic: Required of any solution. Only when you have a clear understanding of these factors are you ready to discuss whether the solution is a pizza box or an ODA ... an Exadata or an IBM System Z.
Far too often I find people purchasing RAM they don't need with CPU speeds that exceed the ability of their network infrastructure to move the data so pay special attention when you are ready to make your purchase to engineered systems like the ODA.

  • Which CAS server user connects

How to check which CAS server did user (outlook) hit among the group of CAS servers (Exchange 2013 CU3) behind F5 load balancer
    SAH

    Hi Shaik ,
In my environment also we are using the F5 load balancers ,If i wanted to check which user is connecting to which cas server then i need to contact the person who is handling the F5 device.
Like you i have also searched for the same query before six months. Finally what i found is given below.
Basically we can use the netstat commands to find out the client connectivity to the cas servers .If we run the commands on the cas server ,we will not be getting the client ip address on the netstat output instead we will be getting the ip address of the
    F5 device.
But on the F5 device we can able to see which client is connecting to which cas server by using some commands.

  • CAS Server Returned in Autodiscovery Information

    Hi,
I’m in the process of designing a new Exchange 2013 implementation for our business and I’m trying to get my head around something that I’m hoping someone here may be able to clarify for me.
My design will consist of multiple AD sites with a single CAS and MBX (collocated) in each. In regards to autodiscovery process I understand that the autodiscovery site scope parameter will/should point Outlook to a local CAS to retrieve the autodiscover
information. However the bit I don’t understand is what CAS server/s will be returned in the autodiscovery information (XML) that Outlook will then use to connect to. Will it be a local (site where Outlook client is located) CAS server?
Please note the InternalURL for the CAS servers will be their FQDN, there is no plan to use high availability for the CAS servers.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Hi Winnie,
Thanks for your reply and your description on how Autodiscovery works.
I understand how Outlook connects to the Autodiscovery service, though the piece of information that I was after was in relation to WHAT information is returned in the XML file to Outlook. I presume that the URLs for all CAS’s are returned regardless of
what AD site they (CAS) are located at? If so then how does Outlook know which CAS server to connect to when it wants to talk to the mailbox server?
    Thanks,
    Ben
    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, when the Autodiscover service connect to a CAS server successfully, an HTTPS response with an XML file would be returned. It includes the connection settings and URLs for the available Exchange services. Outlook uses the appropriate
configuration information and connection settings to connect to your Exchange messaging environment.
Generally, the Autodiscover service returns the following information to the client:
    1. The user’s display name
    2. Separate connection settings for internal and external connectivity
    3. The location of the user’s Mailbox server
    4. The URLs for various Outlook features that govern functionality such as free/busy information, Unified Messaging, and the offline address book
    5. Outlook Anywhere server settings
For example, if the user in Site1 setup the Exchange account in Outlook. The Outlook would connect to CAS1 with Autodiscover service and retrieve all other services settings from CAS1 instead of CAS2 in Site2. When this user sends a service
request, the autodiscover would return service URL from CAS1. CAS1 will proxy the request to the local Exchange 2013 Mailbox server.

  • Exchange 2013 - Prevent Outlook Clients From Connecting To A CAS Server In A Different AD Site

    Hi all,
I could really do with your help!
We have 3 physical sites, A, B & C, with sites A & B having a really fast low latency links between them, so from an AD point of view they are 1 site.  Site C has links to both sites A & B, but the link is a lot slower.
We have an exchange design with 3 servers (one located at each physical site) that will form a DAG spread over the 3 physical sites.  Ideally we will separate the CAS and mailbox server roles out and have them controlled by a hardware load balancer,
however we can have both roles on the same server if required.
What we want, is to prevent is a situation where an outlook client in site C connects to a CAS server in site A/B with the mail being hosted on a mailbox server in site C therefore traversing the network twice to get its mail.
From doing the Microsoft training course, my understanding is that in Exchange 2013, the CAS server only proxy's the request on to the mailbox server and does not redirect the request to the CAS server in the site where the mailbox server resides.
I have seen information online stating that a single namespace is the way to go as long as your site links/network bandwidth is good, but nothing to help with our scenario.
Has anyone else come across this situation and how did you get round it?
    Thanks in advance :)

    Hi Johnson,
Based on my knowledge, Outlook Client will connect to the CAS server which in local first.
Please check whether the CAS server that in site C is healthy.
If the CAS server in site C is healthy, please disable the CAS Load Balance for testing.

  • Outlook tries to connect to a dumb CAS Server

    Hi team,
I set up a lab environment with a Single Ex server(lets say EX1.domain.com) with both CAS/MBX collocated. No internet, just internal testing. Created mail.domain.com and autodiscover.domain.com and pointed out to EX1 server. All connections are smoothly
    going.
Then I decided to add another two CAS servers (EX2, EX3) to the organization and did nothing more than installing, didn't configure array even.
Now, I'm seeing that whenever I disconnect my NIC on EX2 and EX3, some of the clients(Outlook) disconnects and some keeps working. What I'm confused is even after NOT doing anything other than installing, why is my client connecting to the new CAS Server(s)?
    Thank you.
    Cheers!

    You have probably seen this:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124251(v=exchg.150).aspx
Using the user credentials, the Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, or Outlook 2013 client authenticates to Active Directory and searches for the Autodiscover SCP objects. After the client obtains and enumerates the instances of the Autodiscover service, the client
connects to the first Client Access server in the enumerated list and obtains the profile information in the form of XML data that's needed to connect to the user's mailbox and available Exchange features.
    Now, for your specific question:
And how does the client select which CAS to connect to in case of a multiple CAS Server entries in
the Autodiscover info, is it a random selection or round-robin etc?
in the instance of multiple CAS that arent in a load balanced array, the domain-joined client enumerates that list and attempts to connect to the oldest CAS ( I.e. the one installed first) and then tries each one in the list after that - usually.  :)

  • Outlook won't connect to CAS server in another site

Hey guys, so heres my scenario, we were testing a primary site
dag outage, and not for all the tea in China would outlook connect to the DR sites CAS server. When I look at outlook its still trying to connect to the
cas server in my primary site, when I run the
autodiscover test from the clients outlook, within the output, I see it fails on the primary and goes to DR CAS as it should, I even did a repair and that didn't work.
i had to edit the host files on the client and point it directly
to the DR server and then it connected, and by that
i mean, it kept trying to connect to EX01 instead of DR01, so
i edited the host file to make the client go to DR01 as EX01, which
worked, so I'm not sure what's going on. All of this is internally btw.
    Current design:
    Exchange 2010 SP2 - 1DAG  (3 members)
    "Primary site": 2 DC's, 2 DAG members, 2 Hub/CAS
"DRSite"; 1DC (Alternatewitness), 1 DAG member running all roles
Testing server blackout scenario at the primary site, was able to get mailboxes mounted on DR site, OWA works, able to receive mail, outlook only works if DNS is reworked.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hey guys, finally got around to testing this, it
    didn't work :(.
i built a lab with same versions and it worked automatically, the clients just connected
    on their own.
    anythingelse
    I can check?
SIDENOTE: Not sure if related... i remember once
we had a problem where users could could not login to their mailbox using SITEA CAS servers when the databases were hosted in SITEB and in ADSIEDIT was made to allow this to happen, the change had us edit the CAS server's site so that instead of being in DRSITE
it was to SITEA. (Hopefully that makes sense can't remember exactly where that change was made in ADSI).

  • How to Join Primary site to CAS server

     Hello All
Can any one please let me know to how to join Stand-alone primary server SCCM 2012 R2 to CAS server 2012 R2

Different domains don't have to be a reason for extra primaries, see for more information:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712701.aspx#Plan_Com_X_Forest
In case this is really the way you want to go, you can only expand one primary to a CAS. Every other primary that already exists has to be rebuild, or migrated to a newly build primary.

  • User in Outlook gets prompted with login details during high CPU usage in HT-CAS server ?

    Hi All,
I got the VMware virtual machine running Exchange Server 2010 SP2 (I know I'll upgrade that soon) as follows:
    PRODHT-CAS01 (HT-CAS Server NLB node 1)
    PRODHT-CAS02 (HT-CAS Server NLB node 2)
PRODMBX01 (Stand alone Mailbox Server 1) no DAG
PRODMBX02 (Stand alone Mailbox Server 2) no DAG
I'm having a problem with the Outlook 2010 in my company where
all in a sudden it is prompting for a password when the user open up their outlook first thing in the morning.
Some of the users are able to resolve the issue by retype the AD login & password but some are not able to ?
WHen testing using Outlook Web Access everything working fine with no issue,
but for some users who cannot get past Outlook prompt, even after resetting the password, the problem still exist.
I also noticed that the PRODHT-CAS01 cpu is running at 100% during the problem ?

    Hi,
According to your posting, I noticed that the Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access service process consumes excessive CPU on Client Access servers.
It is a known issue in Exchange 2010 SP2. Please update your Exchange server with the latest patches and service packs to have a try. Additionally, the following KB descripted the similar issue with yours. For your reference:

  • How to Verify That I Need Another CAS Server

We have one CAS server and I am thinking we need a second and to set up some load balancing. However, mgmt wants to know what the threshold is for one CAS server before introducing a second is needed. What do I need to be measuring or can someone point
me towards some documentation of what the limits are for a single CAS server before you need a second one?

    Hi,
As far as I know, we can use performance monitor to check the client access server counters.
If most counters are over the expected value, we can add a new CAS server.
For more information about the proper value of the counters, you can refer to the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff367877(v=exchg.141).aspx
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks,

Can not receive Mac mail -error Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.  Account name: "MacMail"
What are the correct mail account settings and more importantly the correct DNS settings
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide
    Cheers

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
