How powerful/fast is the MacBook Air 13inch pls?

Hello everyone, I have had a 17inch MacBook Pro for about 6 years, its a great machine but it's too big and bulky to be very portable. I go away a lot for long weekend or train journyes to see friends and wanted a lightweight portable 'sketch book' to start idea in logic/ableton/photoshop etc while I was travelling and would then bring them back to finish/carry on on an iMac which I will get next year after saving for a bit.
So I bought a 13 inch MacbookPro, which is a great little machine but after only a week I am wondering if it's still a bit too heavy/thick for my needs. I am away now and it took up quite a lot in my ruckack and then I had to walk a couple a miles to the hostel and it go pretty heavy with all my other stuff. So I am wondering if I might return it and get an Air, but worry that it may not be the greatest at running these programs. Does anyone use it for such things or had any experience please? As I say I wont be tracking a whole orhcestra or choir just bacically for getting up ideas running/watching films/net etc
Thanks very much for all help.
PS My old MacBook Pro was 2.6 core 2 duo 4GB ram and seemed to run everything fine. Is the new i5 much better?

Hi Ian.id,
A couple of tips to maximize your shopping research.
1.) Apple Support Communities is an awesome resource for getting quick tech tips and help from a community of individuals who either work in the business, are enthusiasts or generally like to share their knowledge and experiences with others. While we all like to provide correct and accurate information that doesn't always happen (we're all human, after all) but the good news is that often times there's enough relevant data in these forums to where you can get pointed in the right direction or find your answer in another topic discussion.
2.) I'd rank these hardware communities as "ok" (at best) to get a thorough response to specific use cases. For example, with a Logic question you'd be better to ask this in the forums designed for Logic discussions. That forum is here -
https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications
While I realize your question(s) are about the MacBook Air, ultimately the majority of topics in the machine-specific forums are about hardware/software troubleshooting. That's not to say you can't ask here and there (a lot of people will triple or even quad post) to increase visibility. It's no secret that each sub-community has their regulars.
3.) As Ableton is not an Apple product you're not going to get the visibility you're probably after here. What are the odds that someone who uses Ableton on a MacBook Air will see your thread and then actually response in a helpful manner? I'd say it's low. I'd recommend going through Ableton's support community channel which appears to be here -
https://www.ableton.com/answers
4.) Lastly, do you have any music software forums or community sites you frequent? I find those profession-specific forums are usually MUCH better for hardware discussion versus profession-specific discussions in a hardware forum.
Good Luck!

After some advice, I am new to Apple and looking to purchase either the MacBook Air 13inch with 256GB and 8GB mem or the MacBook Pro 13inch with retina 256Gb and 8GB mem. I am an assistant principal in a primary school and also studying my masters at university. I don't play computer games and I don't watch movies. I do store photos and videos of my kids and music on iTunes. I also like browsing the net with numerous windows open, check email etc. I am really wanting long battery life as I do a lot of my work on the couch - not close to a PowerPoint. Would the air do the trick or will it soon be outdated as Apple move towards retina display? Both air and pro seem very thin  - almost the same? And not much difference in weight either so both very portable which is also a necessary requirement. Just can't help dreaming about that 12 hour claimed battery life. Any helpful advice/opinions, very much appreciated. Thanks

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

  • My MacBook Pro shows the "Macintosh HD" icon on the desktop but my MacBook Air does NOT have the icon on it's desktop.  Is this normal?  If not, how do I remount the MacBook Air disk icon on the desktop?

Is it showing in the Finder?
If so, then this is normal.

  • Can someone recommend a custom form fitting sleeve or case specifically for the Macbook Air 13inch?

    Hi all,
Anyone have any reccomendations / suggestions please for a tight form fitting case/sleeve or messenger bag specifically for the MBA 13? If such a thing exists...
I have searched through this discussion community with regard to similar queries but what I have discovered is that many sleeves / cases are more universally geared towards facilitating a number of small profile 13 inch laptops and for a MBA13 inch, this leaves pockets/gaps of air or fabric unfilled and the MBA is "loose" as opposed to being held steady which I dislike.
Even the majority of the Apple branded cases/sleeves advertised for the MBAir appear to be useable for either the Macbook Air / Pro. I'm not looking for the hard shell Speck type cases as I prefer the protection of a sleeve/case, just that I previously had the old white 13 inch unibody Macbook and bought an incase bag which fitted the laptop in a glove like fashion. I'm looking for something that fits the bill now for my new MBA?
Have purchased the below but dissappointed as the laptop feels lost in it...

    Thanks
    Leni

Ive seen and played with most all the zippered strapped cases, and most all of them are awful.
it still ended up back at the Incase strapped case, very thin, but very well padded, well made and the perfect all around choice.
id recommend getting a like new used one for $25 on ebay rather than $60 new.  But as you wish.
    like this :

$20 , Incase used like new , perfect choice.
    same case new is $60

  • 2012 Macbook pro 13 inch or the Macbook air 13inch?

I need to pick between the 2012 macbook air 13 inch and the 2012 macbook pro 13 inch. I am a college student. Any ideas?

I too had that decision to make when I bought my MBP 13 a month ago.
I liked the MB Air because of the portablity and the fact that it had a better screen resolution.
My deciding factor however, was the fact that the MB Air is not user upgradeable and I like the idea of having an optical drive just in case i need it.
If not having an optical drive is an issue to you, then the MB Air is perfect.
Keep in mind however, that if you decide to go with the MB Air, get the maximum RAM you can since you can not upgrade it in the future.  Remember, as programs get upgraded, they become more memory hogs.
    Just my .02 cents.

  • How do i remove the macbook air startup sound?

Yes i am talking about the dong sound whenever the macbook powers on.
I am using bootcamp windows and switching back and forth all the time, i only had the computer a couple days and it already goes on my nerves.
Muting before turning off osX doesn`t work, startupninja doesn`t work, psst doesn`t work, and holding down mute while starting doesn`t work either.

Instead of hitting the mute button, volume down to zero.
    That worked for me.
If you have external speakers connected, you have to remove them first, then volume down.
I hope that solves your problem!

  • How do I stop the MacBook Air trackpad from sticking?

I recently spiiled some syrup on the keyboard and trackpad of my MacBook Air. The keys seem to be sticking a little (they take make a different sound than before, and they take longer to pop back up when pressed), but the trackpad is completely stuck. I can still use it, but it doesn't make the same clicking sound, or pop back up when pressed. I can click something if I apply enough pressure, but I'd like to have it back to normal. Please help!

it's pretty much only a matter of time before your gear shorts out since that much spilled
it will be out of warranty work, but take it to apple or a repair shop you trust and have it repaired
or, if you're handy, find an ifixit teardown guide and try to clean/repair yourself

  • Quick question.... How many megapixels is the MacBook Air's camera?

I have one and I was just wondering It is the most recent 2012 version. Also, how many megapixels is the iPhone 4S?

pHoly cow! On PhotoBooth and FaceTime, it looks like better quality than my 4G iPod! It isn't laggy like most webcams, and it will focus really well if you keep it still. Thanks!

  • Need help with my Macbook air 13inch battery

hey i just got my Macbook air 13inch baseline and i was watching a youtube video with full charge and it say i only have 3.30hours-4hours of battery left is that normal? and if i play some music on itunes with only 1 webpage open(with no video) it says i only have about 4hours left. The apple webpage claims that the macbook air 13inch can last upto 7hours of normal web use but when i was just browing the web with no video no song it still give me about 5hours-6hours max.

    MeAljw wrote:
but is it normal that i get that much less battery by watching video or listening to music?
There is a fixed amount of energy in a charged battery.
The faster you take it out the faster the battery will be drained.
Watching videos puts a heavy load on the battery.

  • How does the MacBook air 1.7ghz processor compare to the MacBook Pro 2.5ghz processor?

    Hello Hello!
I'm a soon to be Information Science major (similar to computer science) and am in the market for a laptop that will last me at least 3-4 years. I'm trying to be as cost effective as possible while still having a configuration that will get me through my college years. I've been looking at either the 11" MacBook Air upgraded to 8gb of ram and the 1.7ghz i7 processor OR the baseline MacBook Pro with the 2.5ghz i5 processor upgraded to 8gb of ram.
I'm leaning towards the MacBook Air because of the ssd and battery life, as well as the form factor. My only worry is that the processor won't be powerful enough to meet my needs as an information science major. I know I'll be learning programming and web development, among other things. I guess to sum up my question, will the 1.7ghz MacBook Air be powerful enough to use as a main machine as a student in this field?
Screen size isn't a problem as I own a decent 20" monitor that I can use whenever I'm at my desk.
    Any feedback is much appreciated!

Noticeably greater? Probably not. I have a MBP that I upgraded to 16 GB and a SSD and my MacBook Air seems at least as fast even though its CPU is slower and it has much less memory. They are both i7 models.
It depends on exactly what you're planning to do with it, for example image manipulation will be faster on the MBP with its dedicated GPU (15" model only though), but for software development and debugging you are not likely going to notice much difference. These Macs are so fast that comparing minute differences isn't worth the effort. Comparing them on the basis of weight and portability is a better idea. The MBA is lighter, but the MBP is expandable... so the choice is likely to be more subjective than quantitative.
We don't know what any future MBP changes will be implemented. Apple's product evolution is pointing in a direction away from expandability, and it's pretty clear disk drives (both optical and HD) are on the way out. If those considerations matter to you waiting for a future upgrade may not work in your favor.

  • How can I unfreeze my Macbook Air?  I have tried restarting but it simply opens on the frozen email page.  Any suggestions?

How can I unfreeze my Macbook Air? I have tried restarting but it simply opens on the frozen email page.
I have tried a few multople key combinations.  I would be very grateful if someone could post one that might ensure that any applications quit before re-starting.

    Try Force Quit.
Press   command + option + esc  keyboard keys together at the same time.
    Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select Mail if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
    Wait.
    Mail will quit.

  • TS4055 How do I use my MacBook Air to access the Amazon Web Service?

How do I use my MacBook Air to access AWS (Amazon web Service)?  The information provided to me by Apple Care seems to be about allowing outside access to my MacBook.

Sorry, but does this relate to Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macs, in some way? If so, how are you using ARD in relation to Amazon's services?

Please somebody help inform apple maybe they can do something about this, its really disappointing.
