How quick do your apps open?

I am wondering what a typical app launch time from clicking it in the dock to being able to use it. I find that Safari, Firefox, iTunes and iPhoto take anywhere from 10-15 seconds to launch. Is that normal? Is there anything I might have done that slows that down? The MBPs at the Apple Store always seem to be much more snappy. I have a 2.4ghz MBP with 20% HD space and 4GB of RAM.

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

If you search this forum you will find from the large number of similar questions that reviews seem to average about a week though some have seen quicker and some have seen much longer.
Everyone wants their app updated immediately. This is, of course, understandable. At the same time some people complain about the junk apps that get approved. It can't work both ways. Apple is getting slammed with new apps and updated apps. It takes time to do even a cursory glance at each and every one to ensure it at least meets some minimum standards.
You can update your app description with some nice comment at the top about your pending new release and what fixes/changes are coming. These updates seem to show up in iTunes in less than a day. That may help a bit.
Of course the best solution is to test your app better to avoid putting out buggy versions. I know this is hard if you are like me - one person trying to get an app out. I don't do QA for a living for a reason

How to keep your apps when you upgrade your iphone

Hi there everyone. Like many of you peeps out there I have my sights set on the iPhone 5. I presently have a 3GS. A friend at work had the same but this week upgraded to the iPhone 4. One thing we spoke about and didn't have a clue about was, when you plug in your new iPhone to iTunes that has all your lovely purchases backed-up on it, what happens?
I have lots of paid for Apps and music on my 3GS and iTunes. What do you do to your old iPhone and iTunes so that, hopefully soon, my new iPhone 5, or in my friends case iPhone 4, can be the recipient of all the stuff backed-up on iTunes?
I'm sure Apple would have made this simple and not the case that you have to start again from scratch with a new iPhone.

Your apps, music, iBooks and so on are not tied to the device, they are tied to your Itunes/AppStore account. As long as you are using the same account, you can put those things on as many separate iDevices as you like. Just plug in the new device into the same computer and iTunes account as the old one, activate it with the same account and id, and then sync the things you want on it over.

Not sure what you mean by formatted for a PC.
You don't need to sign into iCloud to redownload your previouysly purchased apps. Just visit the store, tap updates > puchased > not on this iPod and download any app you choose.

At what rate or how quickly should your battery die

My battery is not lasting very long after charging it. How long should it take for your battery to die when only using safari, a word processor, and possibly a powerpoint program. i am currently operating on 10.8.3 if that helps. please help so I know if I have to take a little trip to the apple store. This is only one of the problems I have been having lately.
It also completly reset itself the other day (programs I deleted months ago were popping up), freezes, can not stay connected to internet, I have to restart my computer every 1/2hr to and hr sometimes.

How to change what app opens a certain file type downloaded in GoogleChrome

How do you change what program is the default to open a certain type of file? My specific issue is torrent files downloaded in Chrome automatically open in Limewire but I want it to open in Vuze. Is this a Chrome setting or an OSX setting that I need to change? In finder the torrents show as Limewire files and when I click "open with" I can select Vuze, tell it to always use Vuze but it only applies to each individual file and not new ones that I download.

I found the answer myself - go to get info on a file and change the program and select apply to all. This seems to have worked for all new files

Select a file in question. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Open With section select the desired default application from the drop down menu. Then click on the Change All button.

I have no clue what you are talking about that you have seen on YouTube, but you cannot run two apps side by side on the iPad. You can double tap the home button to get the the recents tray and tap on another to launch it, or you can swipe with 4 fingers across the screen to move from app to app if you have multitasking gestures enabled in Settings>General>Multitasking Gestures>On.

Apps Opening

When I hit the home key and put in my password apps like CNN and 9news opens up and I can not do anything until it finishes updating the latest story. How do I stop apps opening up when I login to my phone?

Try Repairing Permissions;
Go to Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility. In the left pane highlight your OS X Startup volume (your hard drive) and in the lower right section press Repair Disk Permissions.
BTW, apps like Photoshop and Freehand run in emulation through Rosetta and we were warned when these Macs were introduced that they would not run at native speeds until the 3rd party companies issued their apps in Universal binary code.

I think you're asking how to update your apps on iTunes on your computer.
The screen from which you update looks like this:
To get there, go to "Apps" as shown in the upper left, then click "Updates" in the top center. All available updates will be displayed. If there are none displayed, click "Check for Updates" in the lower right. If some are in fact available, that button will change and say "Update all".
