How remove files from hard drive, retain on iPod?

Does all music have to be permanently stored on my computer, to have it on my iPod?
I have purchased CDs in the past, I still have the CDs and they work fine. I have imported them into iTunes, synched them to my iPod. That all works.
Question: I want to save space on my computer, it's a laptop. I want to delete some of the music files from my laptop hard drive and keep the songs on my iPod. Can someone tell me how to do this?
I have a 45 Gig hard drive in my Powerbook and a 30 G iPod. I don't want music files to permanently take up half the space or more on my Powerbook hard drive.
What can I do?
thank you,
Bill

If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos" (this setting isn't available for an iPod shuffle, you can't delete from iTunes and keep the songs on the shuffle). The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different, you can get details here:
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
iPod - Syncing Music
One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD or an external drive:

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Satellite L40: How do I recover files from Hard Drive

    Hi
Can anyone help me please. About one week ago I started experiencing a clicking sound coming from my Satellite L40 laptop. My laptop froze and when I restarted it, I was directed to the system setup with a message at the bottom saying
"Pri Master Hard Drive Disk SMART status bad, Backup and replace.
    Press F2 to presume."
    I have pressed F2 but I haven't a clue what to do?
Can anyone tell me how to backup my files before my hard drive has completly gone or if it has gone can I use another device to get them off.
I have tried to use the recovery disk but the disk is not responding??
    Please help
    Pete

    Hi
This messages looks like an warning notification from the S.M.A.R.T.
It does mean that your HDD will eventually fail.
It could happen next days or it may not happen for a few months but the SMART capability has detected that the drive is going bad so it should be replaced as soon as possible.
It looks like your notebook is not very old so the warranty should cover all replacements.
I see only one way to access and backup the data. Possibly you could buy an external USB SATA HDD enclosure and could connect the HDD to another computer.
Im not sure if you will be able to access the HDD due to the malfunction but if you want you could try this.
    Good luck

  • HOW TO GET OLD FILES FROM HARD DRIVE? HELP!!!!

hello. so i changed my 320gb HD to a 1.5tb! its running good. the reason why i changed it was because it went white with a folder that had a question mark blinking! so i inserted the disk that came with it and it wouldnt come up on "select a destination" and when i would go to disk utility, it would only show "Media" (which i believe was suppose to be my hard drive), Pioneer CD-RW, and the Installation Disk. so i decided to buy a new and bigger HD and did a partition (dont what that means but it worked) and installed Leopard. now its working good. i just need help on how to get my old files from this old HD i have in hand (the 320gb). like what do i use? can i put it in a PC? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

If the old drive is not accessible then, no, you will not be able to access all your files on it. In this case you may need to look at the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • How do you delete transparent file from hard drive?

Hi. I lent my hard drive to my friend and came back with this weird file named "\". I want to delete this file, but when ever I put this in the trash and empty it, my computer starts lagging. (So I have to relaunch my Finder) This file doesn't allow me to rename it. If anyone knows the way to delete this, please tell me. Thanks

    Hi rebellium.rebel,
    Thank you for your reply.
Another option to consider would be formatting (erasing) the hard drive, after moving your files off of it.
You can find a step-by-step guide for this in the below article, which are good general steps although the article references Aperture:
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture - Apple Support
If the files reappear in the future, some of the steps in this guide may be helpful, such as checking with the manufacturer regarding this situation and whether the drive requires additional software:

  • Deleting photo file from hard drive

    Hello,
I would like to be able to delete items (photos) from both the iPhoto library and my hard drive, but I don't seem to be able to. After I delete items from the iPhoto library, the files are still on the hard drive... (I did empty the trash and I did delete the items from the Library folder)
Note: I just started using iPhoto. I already had a large (?) (9000+ items) library of photos that I keep on an external firewire hard drive. I did not use the "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library" function, because a) I didn't want to wait for the system to copy all 9000 images, b) my internal hard drive isn't really big enough to store all these images and c) I'd like to keep using other software (Photoshop, stich software, etc.) to view, open and edit my images.
I like using iPhoto, it seems faster than what I've been using and I like the clean interface, but if I can't use iPhoto to both view and delete images it might not be the software I'm looking for...
My apologies if this question has been answered prior - I just searched and couldn't find an answer.
    Thanks for all help!

Unfortunately the "Show File" or "Show Original File" command doesn't seem to work when more than one file is selected... (the program just points to one of the selected files). Is there a workaround?
No, I think you'll need to do it one at a time.
How would I specify more than one external application (e.g. Photoshop and a panorama stitching app)
No, you won't be able to set up more than one app at a time. The obvious one being to set up Photoshop. What I would do is export the pics for stitching and then import the resulting image as a new image - but that's just me.
Saving an additional file is as simple either duplicating in iPhoto or using Save As in Photoshop and the importing the new file.
You can download with Image Capture (in your Applications folder) and rename files with a batch renamer such as File List. iPhoto has no facility to rename files except on export as filenames are quite irrelevant within iPhoto. You can, of course, apply titles in iPhoto.
As you say, perhaps the app is not for you - it's not right for everybody in every situation.

  • 11.1.3 crashes when importing an mp3 file from hard drive

When I try to 'add file' from my hard drive to iTunes 11.1.3 the program crashes. The file is not added.  Until updating to 11.1.3  I could add one or more files with no problem. Windows 7.
Is this a glitch in the update or specific to my machine and how could I tell?

  • Remove data from hard drive without startup CD?

I have an old mac computer Tiger 10.4.1 which I am taking to be recycled. How do I erase or zero the hard drive? I do not have the original disk- the computer is 12 years old! This is just a personal computer but does have some sensitive data (one file only, actually). Cant I just drag the hard drive to the trash and empty it?

As WALTER-MILANO-ITALY indicated above, it is possible to gain access to the hard disk on another computer using FireWire target disk mode (if both machines have FireWire ports). A FireWire cable would be needed for this. See the manual for your computer(s) and the article below for details.
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
In order to remove a hard drive, you would have to disassemble the computer. This can be more or less difficult (a quick look at ifixit.com should give you an idea about this) depending upon which model it is.
Once the hard drive has been removed, you can either keep it, erase/use it with another computer, or mechanically destroy it. If you wish to connect it to another computer, something like this example could be useful:
    http://www.newertech.com/products/usb3_universaldriveadap.php
You are not supposed to drag a hard disk with an active system to the Trash. Dragging individual files to the Trash (and emptying the Trash) is not going to be sufficient, unless the space is overwritten. It is not wise to recycle a computer without having properly erased or removed the hard disk drive.

  • Can't attach files from Hard drive to my web based email clients!!

    Hey there People!!
I seriously need help with this. For the past month or so I have been having problems uploading files from my hard drive to Yahoo, Gmail and even Blogger. Each time I try uploading a file, Safari either shuts down on me completely or I get some error message that says it can't find the page or that there is a disagreement of some sort.
I have since downloaded Mozilla and I dun seem to have a problem with Mozilla like I do with Safari. I really like and prefer Safari to Mozilla and would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me how to fix this problem or perhaps what is possibly causing it???
    Seriously much appreciated everyone!
    Daryl E

    Hi there!
So sorry for not doing this earlier. Realise it would be hard to analise the situation without a proper report about it. Anyways, here's what was given to me by Safari when I can't upload anything:
Safari can’t open the page “http://photos.blogger.com/upload-image.do”. The error was: “POSIX error: Invalid argument” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:22) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
Hope this helps. I will try and post the crash report as well. Thanking you in advance!!

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then partition and format the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332118549&sr=8-1

You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A 10.5 Leopard disk will run you around $200
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.

  • Playing a .CDR file from Hard Drive

Hi, I have copied a DVD to my hard drive using Disk Utility. I did this as a back up should the DVD become damaged or lost. I can make a DVD out of it so all is well. I however wish to be able to watch the DVD directly from the Hard Drive ie from the .CDR file.
Is this possible? Advice welcomed. Alternative approaches welcomed if the above is not feasible.
    Thanks in advance.
    Phil

Use to be able to mount .ISO images. If you copied it to a DVD image in Disk Utility, not just a file, mount it and see. It needs to be read-only image.
I think you need to use a program. I would see what "play DVD images" turns up on Google.

  • Was advised to delete system configuration file from hard drive and now computer will not start - any help would be appreciated.

Downloaded Yosemite and since then cannot connect to internet or bluetooth mouse - was advised to delete system configuration file from the hard drive and since then cannot start up computer. Any help would be appreciated - cheers.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION+COMMAND+R keys down.  The result should be a display showing a revolving globe.  By following the instructions, you will be able to reinstall the original OSX.  Then you may reinstall Yosemite.
A solid Internet connection will be required.
    Ciao.

  • How to restore from hard drive that won't boot?

My Macbook Pro recently started hanging at the grey boot screen, and the hard drive was replaced under Applecare. I've got the old hard drive in a USB enclosure now, and everything on it seems to be readable despite it refusing to boot from this hard drive. Disk utility reports no problems. Is there a way to restore the files and applications from the old hard drive onto the new hard drive? I presume I can't just make a new time machine backup from the old hard drive and restore that?
