Try to force your phone into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Turn it off if you can by holding the sleep/wake switch until you see the red slide to off. If you can't turn it off, please continue. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. Thanks, King_Penguin. Yes, I tryied putting the iPad into recovery mode. It freezes in the black screen with the iTunes and USB cable. When I followed the instructions and then started iTunes, I received the following message: "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-424040)".
I have unistalled iTunes three times already and donloaded and installed three new versions. No luck.

Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes? If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created.

Your iPhone is in recovery mode-- you need to connect it to your computer and, most likely, iTunes will ask you to restore it. If you recently backed up this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

If it's not being recognized while it's in recovery mode in your itunes, try this
plug the phone into the usb attached to the computer
hold down the home and sleep/wake button on top simultaneously until the phone's screen goes black
When the screen goes black, release your finger from the sleep/week button on top but continue holding the home button until you see a dialog on the itunes screen on your computer that says 'itunes has detected a device in recovery mode'
then say 'ok,' select 'restore,' and say 'restore and update'

Whilst downloading the latest "itunes" update, I left the room and came back half an hour later to discover the above on my iphone screen.
On switching the phone off to remove the symbol message, the same message on a black background was all I could access each time I restarted the phone.
Any ideas of what happened and how I can use my phone normally again.

You must have the latest version of iTunes on your PC, and you must connect the phone to your PC with a USB cable. It should then be recognized in iTunes and should restore. If it does not see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
