How's enlightenment 17 on Arch?

Ok, I've reinstalled Arch about 5 times in the past month for numerous reasons, and i'm getting pretty sick of it. I now have a clean Arch install with X set up, but no DE/WM yet. I've tried KDEmod, but didn't really like the Windowsy-feel of it, Xfce, but I always get bored for some reason, LXDE and Openbox, but those are a little too hardcore for me as far as setup and configuration goes (probably the same with other WMs). I'm not sure if I even want to try GNOME anymore because back when I was an ubuntu user, I HATED GNOME so much. I don't even know why anymore, but I think it was just the overall usability was totally inefficient and counterintuitive.
It's not that full DEs are too much for my system; I have a laptop with 2GB RAM, 2GHZ intel core 2 duo, 335 MB of video RAM, and about 30GB HDD space partitioned to Linux.
I heard that enlightenment was what the developers like to call a "desktop shell", or whatever is in between a WM and DE. It sounded good to me seeing as I really appreciate the instantaneous response of WMs and the features and eye candy of DEs. Does E17 provide this perfect balance I'm looking for?
So I ask you, the Arch Linux community, how's E17?

Enjoy.
Also, [protip:] load the "Bling" module for compositing in E. Just like everything else in E, it's fast and visually impressive(albeit buggy at times).

  • How do I tell Arch/pacman that I have Java installed?

    Since Sun JDK is removed and I have had to install it manually, how can I tell Arch/pacman that I have Java runtime installed and stop pacman from dragging in OpenJDK when installing a java app?

    Then just create an empty package which is called jdk.
    pkgname=jdk
    pkgver=7
    pkgrel=3
    pkgdesc="The Java Development Kit"
    url=http://jdk7.java.net/
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    license=(custom)
    provides=('java-environment=7')
    conflicts=('java-environment')
    package(){
    /bin/true
    or http://codepad.org/I50Qx8fT
    But remember, doing something like that, you are responsible if things break. Because e.g. if you forget about all this and ask people here for help, this might get very ... a big waste of time

  • Enlightenment in Arch

    I was planning on installing another WM along with Openbox on my Arch install. I wanted to use Enlightenment 17. Do I simply install the e17 package from the repos or do I have to do something additional?

    Thanks. I really like how everything is in the wiki. I'll check those first before posting about anything again.

  • How to print lever arch spine labels on HP Officejet Pro 8600

    how do you print level arch spine labels on HP Officejet Pro 8600?

    SOTAP, sounds like you are having a dilemma printing these labels. First question, did these labels come with a program or CD that you use for printing? Most labels like those from Avery have a specialized program for formatting the labels for printing.
    Let me know!

  • How can we help Arch?

    Hello everybody.
    Often, people do want to help. Just they often dont know where to start off, making packages, helping on the tool development with patches, writing documentation, translating or similar things.
    How about a little guideline, how a user can help the Arch distribution, according to the skills the person has.
    Where is help needed? Where are you lacking on resources? What should be done?
    I've been around for a while now (about two years), and often wondered how to help. I've done packages, which got adobted some day be TUs or i abdoned them (before aur), looked into the bugs database, read mailing lists, was around helping other users on irc.
    Definitely things which won't bring arch much forward.
    // STi

    I'm not good at writing out these things, but I'll give a rough overview that someone can make a little better:
    How you can help: · I know alot about linux: help out here or on IRC.  New users always struggle on something.  Help is always appreciated.
    · I am a good programmer: help out with some of the arch specific utilities.  Some current ones that could use a hand: pacbuild (python), pacman (c), mkinitcpio (bash) to name a few
    · I'm good at fixing things: Great.  Check out the bug tracker.  See if you can reproduce some errors.  If possible, try to find the root cause and provide information.  Even better if you can fix the actual problem, but every bit of information helps.
    · I like to build things: Cool.  Try packaging.  It's not all that difficult.  Make some packages you think people will like, and stick them up on the AUR.  You might even want to try to become a TU

  • How can I get arch-chroot to source /root/.profile [solved]

    I really like the arch-chroot script. When I come into the chroot using the script, I see that the shell is /bin/sh instead of bash. That is ok. How can I get the root user inside the chroot to source /root/.profile automatically? I have a line in there that will
    exec /usr/bin/bash
    . Thank you.

  • How to get the arch of flash player plugin running in my web browser,32-bit or 64bit ?

    i need to get the arch with code.
    it is not easy to judge the arch by the plugin version code.
    HOW? ANY INTERFACE?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply!
    Even though it  is available in beta on Adobe Labs,We can download 64-bit Flash Player from Adobe web site.
    On 64-bit Win 7 ,I use the web browser plug-in of eclipse SWT  to visit our web site ,
    and i find the flash could not be displayed ,instead with a small red cross in the top left corner of  web browser.
    Then uninstall 32-bit flash player and install 64-bit version,the flash could be displayed normally.
    So now, i am trying to find a method to detect the arch of the flash player.

  • How to make a ARCH package from local folder?

    hello ARCH lovers
    I can't seem to figure out how to make a installable
    package from a folder on my desktop?
    Coming from Slackware; the procedure would be simple enough just issuing
    "makepkg /root/pkgname.txz"
    Now; how would I do the same in ARCH?
    I know about PKGBUILD, etc but there is no source or any url's
    I just need to make it into a .pkg.tar.xz
    The package is my "kernel-live-kit" for both x86 and x86_64 versions of arch
    enabling one to remaster there existing install into a livecd/usb, etc
    The kernel itself is kernel26-zen from AUR
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=30330
    however; mine is quite different and also includes all components to make the livecd using modified linux-live-6.3.0
    scripts and special stuff
    The pkg includes a premade kernel with modules and full kernel source
    The resulting live media is similar to my nFluxOS builds
    http://multidistro.com/
    As I will be releasing the new four horsemen of nFluxOS today; I also made 4 Kernel pkg's for the arch and slack versions
    Those will be for x86/x86_64 versions for both arch and slackware
    I did this in lieu of creating a quartet of x86_64 versions of nFluxOS; as that would up the number of versions to 8
    and I would then have to maintain 8 distro's instead of 4.
    I made a testing version of ARCH x86_64 live
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ost4017796
    so, I really need to make the ARCH x86 and x86_64 kernel kits into installable pkg's because there are many symlinks that would get corrupted if I just tarred it and then the end user untars it and copies it somewhere it would mess up the symlinks.
    as I said, in slackware I do makepkg and it creates a script named "doinst.sh" that makes all the symlinks, etc
    so, any help appreciated!
    thanks

    You can read a simple introduction to using the ABS here.
    By the way, it's not hard. Out of all the distributions I've used, Arch Linux is the only one I've figured out how to make packages for.

  • How to make an Arch Linux Distribution Installer?

    I have made a customized distribution of Arch Linux in vmware.
    I now need to make its installer for deployment.
    How can I do it?
    I have tried Archiso, but it makes new work dir and downloads archlinux again.
    I want to use the current installed and modified linux for the installer.
    Please help

    Hello,
    Basically, I am doing the same right now in VirtualBox.
    There is aif, an installation framework for Arch, which can be customized to install and configure Arch just like you manually did. Use [wiki]Archiso[/wiki] to create a bootable medium and make sure to install aif on it. Now, you need to modify aif in /usr/lib/aif to make exactly the same changes you did to your running system. Then, you can run /sbin/aif from the bootable medium to install your customized Arch.
    Unfortunately, I myself do not know how to change aif to do things to the target system, e.g. install custom packages or manipulate files on the installed system. If someone has already done this or knows how to do, I'd be very grateful if he can share with us.

  • How many Physical CPUs Arch Linux Supports?

    How many Physical CPUs does Arch Linux Support, the traditional 2?
    Can it support 4 or more Physical CPUs, How?
    By Physical CPUs I take RedHat deffinition :
    Red Hat defines physical CPUs equivalently to sockets, so a multi-core and/or hyperthreading CPU is counted as a single CPU or socket when determining whichedition of Enterprise Linux to deploy.
    Thanks

    Let's put it this way.
    Linux can likely support more cpu's than you can afford.
    That is, unless you are super rich..
    If that is the case..then by all means.....
    ....donate!
    EDIT: After some peeking around.. I found this.
    SGI Altix 4700 incorporates the shared-memory NUMAflex™ architecture, which simplifies software development, workload management and system administration. It supports up to 512 processors under one instance of Linux and as much as 128TB of globally shared memory. Supporting these powerful capabilities is the NUMAlink™ interconnect, which leads the industry in bandwidth and latency for superior performance on cluster applications. The SGI Altix 4700 represents a versatile solution for shared or distributed memory applications of any scale.
    Likely SGI has a few tweaks that haven't percolated into the mainline kernel yet (pending or rejected)..But sgi usually pushes the high end mutiprocessor systems..
    So.. around 512?

  • How (un)stable is Arch-current?

    I want to give Arch Linux a try, because it really seems a great concept to me: i686 optimized, cutting edge features, simplicity. However, I really like to have the latest software, so I was planning to try the current packages. I just want to know how stable it is compared to Debian Unstable(very stable here), in which I'm typing this post right now. If it's as stable as Debian unstable it's byebye Debian, welcome Arch Linux.
    Thanks in advance
    btw. sorry for my bad Englsih

    Its stability is about the same. Every once in a while, a package will be broken (or deps messed up), but that isn't common.
    So go for it. Arch is almost always more up to date then even Debian Unstable. Hell, Deb Unstable still uses Xfree86 4.2.1, and some other old stuff.

    Leave out the autodetect hook from mkinitcpio.conf, which tailors your initramfs to the specific hardware.
    And maybe also use plain old vesa, instead of a specific video driver.

  • How do i install arch on a old laptop

    Hi i may need some help with this,
    I obtained the latest installation cd and tried booting it, it gives me the following output:
    This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
    How do i boot a boot the i686 kernel or should i use a old ISO?

    The latest ISO should bring up a menu which lets you choose between i686 and x86_64. I just downloaded the ISO and tried it, the menu's there. Are you sure you have the latest ISO?
