How Safe Is It To Jump From OSX 10.5.2 To 10.5.8 In One Go?

I am still using 10.5.2 because until yesterday my broadband connection was so slow and incredibly unreliable that I dare not try to download the huge OS updates.
I have changed ISPs and am now on a very fast connection so downloading is no problem.
The simplest procedure would seem to be to use the latest combo update to do it in one go. Are there any possible pitfalls I should be aware of? (I use apps such as FCS2 and Photoshop CS3).
A better solution might be to upgrade to Snow Leopard but as I have over 130 apps in my Application folder it could be a very long job and there is a possibility that some of them would not work under SL.

1. The only requirement Apple has made on http://www.apple.com/macosx/ for the $29 version of Leopard is that it is Leopard that you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard. 10.5.2 is a version of Leopard, therefore there should be no reason to upgrade to 10.5.8 first, unless you have some software that is currently only 10.5.8 compatible.
2. Combo update of 10.5.8 is essentially the only version that will take 10.5.2 to 10.5.8 without any intermediate updates applied in between. At least two backups* before installing 10.5.8 is a must too.
3. Wikipedia has a listing of known compatible applications with Snow Leopard. However, as Snow Leopard isn't going to be out till Friday, any last second changes may change this listing fairly soon. Since no one under non-disclosure can tell us whether or not there are changes such as these, we'll have to just wait and see. That's why I strongly recommend making at least two backups*, and not having any third party peripherals connected when the actual update is performed. Dismount any peripherals before restarting with the Snow Leopard installer. Or disconnect them after shutting down the machine and before running the Snow Leopard installer.

  • How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?

How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?  We have a super awesome contacts server that works great for our Mac users.  About 30% of our company are on PCs, and I would like to use the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client for them.  I see that in Thunderbird I can set up LDAP searching, and would like to have this feature point to our contacts server.  I've tried several different settings, and looked all over the web, but could not find the proper way to configure this.  Does anyone know if this can be done, or if not, would have a better suggestion?  Thank you for your time!!

try double clicking keychain acces should launch and ask if you want to install login, system, System roots
A dialog box will launch asking where to install the cert since your configuring a vpn I would put the certificate it in system.

  • How / When Does a Device Jump from the 2.4 GHz Network to the 5.0 GHz Network

I understand -- through another thread that I started -- that the Guest Network will be both 2.4 GHz as well as 5.0 GHz....I would like to understand how / when does a device jump from the 2.4 GHz network to the 5.0 GHz network as I understand that: the 2.4 GHz network is slower but has greater range relative to the 5.0 GHz network.
    Thx...

So, if you have a 5 GHz capable device that is in close proximity to the router, it will connect at 5 GHz.  If that device moves a few rooms away from the router, it will switch over to the 2.4 GHz band since that signal will be stronger....and likely faster at that location.
Think of 5 GHz as a "same room" connection or "line-of-sight" deal. It might be OK through one wall....if it is thin.
You do have an option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz band in AirPort Utility. Once you have done that, simply "point" the device at the network with the 5 GHz name. Some users swear by this and some swear at this.
The downside to doing this......the device will likely try to hang on to the 5 GHz connection if it moves a few rooms away from the router.....at a location where the 2.4 GHz signal is stronger and likely faster.
Again, thanks for the very helpful response.
It occurs to me from reading the above that it makes sense to let the device (using your words) connect to either the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz band based on its capabilities and distance in relation to the router as I can see / understand the downside and issue of manually pointing to or selecting  a specific network.
The reason that I purchased an Apple router is the hope that it will work better than some of the other routers I have tried as far as the 5 GHz / 2.4 GHz dual banding is concerned because in most of these cases I have had to disable the 5 GHz band to maintain a reliable internet connection...hopefully the Aiport Extreme will not require me to do so [i.e. it will work]!
With respect to *BOTH* the Primary Network and the Guest Network being dual band I can only conclude that this work because there are essentially two separates networks [i.e. 10.o.x.x and 172.16.x.x] that are using the send / receive configuration capabilities.
    Thx...

  • Hey guys, Just want to know if i can jump from osx 10.5.8 straight to 10.6.4? Is there an update in between ? All i see available to purchase from apple is osx 10.6 (there is no third number)

Hey guys, Just want to know if i can jump from osx 10.5.8 straight to 10.6.4? Is there an update in between ? All i see available to purchase from apple is osx 10.6 (there is no third number) but yet i saw a guy online selling snow leopard 10.6.3 so it left me wondering if i would need to purchase two upgrades as oppose to one!
    Cheers

Updates from 10.x.0 to 10.x.last are traditionally free, and are available via Software Update.
The version upgrades from 10.x to 10.y will traditionally cost you some money.
Make sure your Mac meets the requirements for 10.6 — if you're on PPC, you cannot upgrade to 10.6.  (For reference, here are the Lion 10.7 system requirements.  The 10.7 upgrade requires 10.6.6 or later, and can be purchased by calling Apple directly and acquiring a download code, if it doesn't show up in the Mac App Store for you automatically.  I don't think your hardware would be supported with 10.8, if you're presently running 10.5.)
In any case, you can purchase an official Apple Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD disk for US$20.
Back up your system before installing the new software.
Once you install 10.6, you'll run software update and the 10.6.8 combo update will be downloaded and installed for you.  That's free.  10.6.8 allows you to use your trackpad, as well as access the Mac App Store and some other tools; it's the most recent version of 10.6.

My hard drive crashed and i lost all my rippped cd songs from the hard drive. Luckily they are all in icloud but how do i get ripped music from icloud to redownload back to the PC all in one go???

    Hi,
The simplest solution would to restore from your back up - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
If you do not have a back, you can select first track on list in song view, from menu > edit > select all. Next ctrl+click and select download from pop up. You may wish to do this in small batches as it will take some time to download.

How do you delete unwanted pictures from the photo library on the iPhone 4s? The ones in the Daisy icon...

Pictures in Photo Library are synced from your computer and must be deleted from there, followed by re-sync.  Photos in Camera Roll can be deleted from your iPhone directly (tap arrow in top right, tap the pictures you want to delete, press the Delete button).

  • How do I snyc the pictures from my old apple ID/icloud on to my new one????

My apple account was hacked into so I had to change my email on my account. I had tons of pictures saved on that account with icloud, but now that I have a new email address on that account the pictures did not automaticly transfer over. How do I get my pictures from my old account on to the new one please help!!!

You would have to delete the new account from your phone, sign back into the old account, turn on photo stream, save the photo stream photos to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll), then delete to old account and sign back into the new one again.  (When you delete the account it only deletes it from your phone, not from iCloud.  Your data will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.  Also, you will only get back photo stream photos added in the last 30 days.  After 30 days photos are deleted from your camera roll even though they remain on any device that already has them.)

  • How do i scan a document from the printer to send in an email to some one else i have a HP-B209

how do i scan a document from the printer to send in an email to someone else

    Hi!
    To scan:
You may press the start scan button on the printers control panel or use the HP solution center that must be installed in your computer to scan a document or photo.
    Scan to email:
Some printers don't have the option in the control panel for scan to email. Mostly it is with the HP solution center software that should be installed in your printer.
    Note:
For Windows the software is called HP solution center
For Mac it is called HP utility

how do I send multiple photos from ipad2

If you view the photos in thumbnail view, as opposed to full screen, then via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it at the top right of the app you should be able to select up to 5 photos and attach them to an email via the Email button towards the top left of the app (on iOS 5 it's via Share not Email).

  • How do I COMPLETELY uninstall LogMeIn from OSX 10.9.3 MacBook

Someone suggests running uninstaller.sh in the terminal. Will that work? How do I do that?
I installed the program in Snow Leopard, if that makes a difference.
In Maverick, LogMeIn's "uninstaller.sh"  shows as a "locked" file that can be copied as "unlocked."
    Regards

You shouldn't need to run a shell script to uninstall logmein - the first step would be to do so according to the developer's instructions
Note: you may need to reinstall Logmein to run the uninstaller.

  • How do I upgrade my G5 from OSX 10.3.9 to 10.5?

I can't figure out exactly what I need to enable me to upgrade my iMac G5 from 10.3.9 to 10.5. I'm finding complete software packages for $189 and up, but that seems awfully steep for software that's already outdated. What exactly do I need to buy, and where can I find it?

Leopard installer should be available for $129 through Apple's phone sales: 1-800-MY-APPLE.
    These are the System requirements
To upgrade to Leopard or install Leopard for the first time, you must have a Macintosh computer with:
    • An Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    • An internal, external, or shared (if you’re using Remote Install Mac OS X) DVD drive
    • At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended) •! A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video
    card supported by your computer
    • At least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

  • How do I unlock my iPod from my old computer to put it on my new one?

    Hi Guys,
Is it possible for me to move my iPod from my old computer to my new one?
If so how do I do it?

Since your iPod can only be synced with one computer/iTunes library at a time, you'll want to copy everything that is currently on the iPod to the new library first.  Once you have done that you can go ahead and choose the Erase and Sync option or restore the device to allow it to begin syncing with the new library.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
