How safe is Magsafe?

We all know that Magsafe is a great idea, in concept that is. Some of us choose to believe that it is an all around great idea. The thought that if someone or school happens to trip over your power cord, rest assured, Magsafe will save your Macbook Pro, from taking the dreaded plunge to the floor. I on the other hand am so easily convinced. The other day, after calling apple, and complaining about a malfunctioning power supply. I was using my computer, and the charger was plugged into my Macbook Pro. I was working along, all fine and well, then I noticed something funny smelling, kinda like burning plastic. As I took notice, I looked around my room, and at my computer, everything seemed to be okay. I went back to listening to music in iTunes, and surfing the web. A few seconds later, a few sparks emitting from my Magsafe, and just narrowly catches my eye. Then before I can react, there is a copious amount of sparks, and the plastic sheath and cable surrounding it, is melting away quite quickly. I proceed to remove the Magsafe from my Macbook Pro (Being my first concern), then I remove the power supply from the wall (for fear of having my property ruined from fire).

You tell me.
What is more important, the fact that you run your cord in a way, that nobody will trip over it? Or have your power supply randomly malfunction, causing damage to the plug, notebook and personal property?
Thanks,

I never said that adapters other then Magsafe are guaranteed not to malfunction. All I have a problem with is this is one of a few cases Ive heard thus far, and this is a BRAND new product, not something that has a long standing reputation. Honestly, something as simple and as dangerous as a power adapter, from a QC standpoint 3/25,000 over a month (if the 25,000 is true, I dont know, I wouldnt put it past you) isnt a terribly great record given that it is a new product. If it was 3/25,000 MBP's that didnt function, I could understand, there are by far more many points of failure. There seems to be a few electrical related issues with the new MBP's (electric discharge through the chasis, a planned battery recall, powersupply issues). While this may be either unrelated, or midly related, the amounting problems seem to be quite outstanding. Then agian, this is a 1st gen product.

  • How safe to go for 9iAS in Windows.

    Hi Guys
    Good Day Guys? We are planning for Migration from 6i to 9i with 9iAS. How safe is it to go for 9iAS? What are the major problem faced during migration?
    Thanks for your help
    Diogo

    I would like to add couple of things - based on my recent experince.
    We have a client/server 6i forms/reports application running on Linux and Solaris, which I have recently ported to iAS 10g (9.0.4). My biggest issue was the fonts and icons, but the entire application (more forms , less reports than you have) took only a week. Still have problem with the graphics - still depends on the 6i graphics :( -- most of the charts are now in reports. There are some "form properties" that are obsolete now, and on linux non of the vbx, etc is supported. I am not sure that applies to the windows version of iAS.
    You should also consider licensing. If you are licensed for full stack of iAS EE (includes forms/reports services), then you better utilize single sign on (for added security) and portal, etc. I really liked the portal capabilities. If you only licensed for the Forms/Reports services, then you have no other option (and no headache for sso, infra metadata repository, etc) by default.
    For training, I took some courses from Oracle. One of them was the iAS administrator I course. In that particular course, they do not teach deploying forms at all. And if you only deploy Forms/Reports services, I don't thing the iAS administrator II (second part of the course) will not worth the money - they have a CD based offering for that and I think for ~400$ that is a better deal. I was able to deploy our forms/reports on iAS with not too much of a problem (after reading the manuals and white papers from OTN/Metalink). If you are licensed for full stack, then Portal class is really nice - I highly recommended (I can even suggest a particular instructor if you are interested). Oracle also has a class teaching how to develop java by using JDeveloper. That might be very useful for your java programmer/s - given that JDeveloper is now free and includes Oracle Application Development Framework. Even if you are not going to use the full stack of iAS, knowing JDeveloper is nice to complement Forms applications.
    Another thing is that certain version of Windows OS (2003 server) might be required to run Forms/Reports Services. There is a FAQ pdf file on OTN, also it a certification matrix is available on Metalink (if you have a valid CSI# you can open an account on Metalink).
    hope this proves useful.

  • How safe is iCloud and what exactly does it do?

    I was thinking about adding storage onto my iPhone by using iCloud as my iPhone is only 8GB.
    However, what exactly is iCloud and how safe is it to use? Does Apple save all your info and details for there personal use?
    What does it do? Just a safe storage thing or what, I have no idea!?

    Ignore what it does do and concentrate on the fact that it does not do "add storage onto your iphone".

  • How safe is it to open my Macbook Pro myself to check my fans

    Okay the fans are making loud nose and I wanna check if I can solve it myself by cleaning the dust and something else before taking it to get it repaired by Apple. How safe is it? Is it hard? Is there any chance I will wreck it?  I'll be just opening it to clean the cooling fans.

    Peruse the photographs at iFixit.com and judge for yourself. Aside from the tiny tools to remove tinier screws, it's not difficult.
    Of course there is a chance you'll wreck it, so minimize the risk. MBP disassembly / reassembly is not difficult for the mechanically inclined. I use an egg carton to keep all the tiny screws (remove the eggs first).

  • How safe is an air blaster/high pressure air to clean under the keyboard?

    how safe is an air blaster/high pressure air to clean the stuff under the keyboard? ive heard those things can be dangerous. any ideas?
    if you recommend it, how do you use it safely? which brand do you suggest?
    please advise. thanks.
    Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    This was standard procedure at the computer lab at my college. Just make sure to use compressed air cans designed for photographic and/or electronic use.
    Put the extension tube on the can. Holding the keyboard/laptop at an angle, insert the nozzle between each of the rows of keys and give it a few short blasts. Debris will be blown out of the opposite end of the keyboard.
    Make sure not to hold the can on its side or upside down when you do this, because the propellant in the cans can come out as a liquid and may leave a residue.
    I still do this routinely with my systems, and have never had a problem. My oldest laptop is now seven years old and has not suffered any ill effects. We did this weekly at the computer lab.
    My main problem at home is cat hair, which is easily removed by this method; friends of mine with beards say it also works for the occasional errant whisker. Cleaning keyboards at the lab in this manner dislodged all kinds of nasty bits, quite often including Doritos...
    Ned, this actually does work pretty well. Worst case, it just blows the larger/heavier debris to one end of the keyboard, where it can be more easily tapped out.

  • Disk image: How Safe?

    I'm wondering just how safe my encrypted disk image is on my computer.
    Can an expert open a disk image on my computer if he/she has physical possession?
    If so: 1. just how good would the person have to be?
    2. how would the person do it?
    3. does this apply to all Apple computers?
    I haven't been able to get specific answers.
    Thank you so much for your help,
    Joe

    Can an expert open a disk image on my computer if he/she has physical possession?
    Basically, not if the image is encrypted and the password isn't in the keychain. Ensure the password can't be guessed. Click here for more information.

    You are using an unencrypted wireless service so anyone else connected to the same hotspot could intercept your traffic.
    BT offer a Cisco VPN for this very reason - http://www.btwifi.co.uk/help/security/vpn-software.jsp
    You must be connected to a BT hotspot to download it but I have not been able to get it working on iPhone/iPad.
    I have started using OpenVPN which is significantly more difficult to implement but works well and is extremely secure.
    The other option is to use a router with a VPN endpoint built-in such as a Draytek or certain others using the DD-WRT or Tomato open-source firmwares and connect to that when out and about.

  • How safe IS Safari exactly?

    Okay, well I was doing the common application this weekend. It asks you for your Social Security number, and I entered it without thinking twice... However I remembered a post on Macrumours about how Phishing was common among Mac users because we used Safari, so I just got hit by an attack of paranoia. Though I still don't really understand exactly why the social Security number is so important, I do understand that it is.
    Is there any chance that my number could have been stolen? D=
    I don't really think that entering the number on the college application is the same as entering credit card information, but I AM really afraid of identity theft... What do you guys think? =(
    Is there anything I should do? Any way I can find out if I have some sort of spyware that could have done this?

    How safe IS Safari exactly?
    No browser in existence can prevent a user from voluntarily entering private information online. I believe people have an unreasonable expectation of what a browser can and cannot do in terms of protecting their privacy. Where phishing scams are concerned all a browser can do is warn the user that a particular site is questionable based on some database (Safari apparently uses Google's anti-phishing database).
    And you heard wrong, very wrong. Phishing is NOT anymore common using Safari than any other browser. The people posting this tripe have personal agendas. Contrary to belief if you read something on the internet it is not necessarily or even commonly true.

    MacBook Pro 2.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2gig of Ram/160GB HD

    It's not very safe against someone who knows what they're doing. The SSID can be discovered rather easily and even if you enable MAC addres filtering, the MAC address can be easily spoofed.

  • How safe is my iTunes account and how can I prevent it getting hacked?

    I just finished reading an article and was wondering how to prevent my account from being hacked ect.
    http://www.3news.co.nz/iTunes-accounts-hacked-money-stolen---reports/tabid/412/a rticleID/214432/Default.aspx#top

    Your account is very safe and it is very unlikly that it will get hacked because every time you change your password it requires you to re enter your security code on your credit card. Also, every time you close out itunes and then buy something, it asks for a password. I have been on itunes for about 7 years with 7 different accounts within my family and not one of them has ever been hacked. If you are still worried then I would agree with the comment above.

    How secure is ipad2 for Internet surfing, do I need Norton or similar?

  • How safe is my code?

    If I have the following very simple code:
    public MyApp extends JFrame
      public MyApp()
        this.setSize(100,100);
        this.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter()
        {public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we)
          {this.dispose(); System.exit(0);} });
        this.show();
        new Thread(new MyRunner(this)).start();
        for(int loop = 0; loop < 20; loop++)
          dump("In MyApp");
      public void dump(String text)
        System.out.println(text);
      public static void main(String[] args)
        MyApp app = new MyApp();
      class MyRunner implements Runnable
        MyApp App = null;
        public MyRunner(MyApp app)
          App = app;
          if(App != null)
            App.dump("In MyRunner");
      } // end class MyApp.MyRunner
    } // end class MyAppHow thread-safe is it? I have heard that Swing is not thread-safe. In my case, I am asynchronously calling the dump() method from two different threads (main thread and the thread started with MyRunner). Is this wrong or unsafe?
    a) should dump() be synchronized?
    b) should I be using SwingUtilities.invokeLater(Runnable) method? ie should I replace the dump() method with this:
      public void dump(String text)
        SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable()
        {public void run() {System.out.println(text);}});
      }According to the SwingUtilities.invokeLater() API documentation: "This method should be used when an application thread needs to update the GUI. ". In the API example they use System.out.println(). Does this count as "GUI"?
    I know that different threads should not be modifying the GUI (for instance, if dump() appended to a JTextArea or did something to an object descended from a Component), but does "System.out" matter?
    Thanks for the help,
    Jeff Schiller

    1. It doesent matter what yalls think :)
    If it does not say its thread safe, then treat it as thread unsafe. I don't think one would get very far using that definition. Doing a text search there is several methods in swing which claim that. And all of jdbc. Nothing else does, in particular nothing in the real core, like java.lang, java.util and java.io.
    Note that that includes the Thread constructors.
    Yet I would have no problem assuming Vector and Thread are entirely thread safe and I am reasonably confident that the implementations of the Collections.synchronized... interfaces also are safe.
    3. How do you know you can call system.out from any thread and it wont crash? Because I looked at the source code.
        ----From java.lang.System
        private static void initializeSystemClass() {
         props = new Properties();
         initProperties(props);
         sun.misc.Version.init();
         FileInputStream fdIn = new FileInputStream(FileDescriptor.in);
         FileOutputStream fdOut = new FileOutputStream(FileDescriptor.out);
         FileOutputStream fdErr = new FileOutputStream(FileDescriptor.err);
         setIn0(new BufferedInputStream(fdIn));
         setOut0(new PrintStream(new BufferedOutputStream(fdOut, 128), true));
         setErr0(new PrintStream(new BufferedOutputStream(fdErr, 128), true));
       ---setErr0() sets 'out'
       ----From java.io.BufferedOutputStream
        public synchronized void write(int b) throws IOException {
         if (count >= buf.length) {
             flushBuffer();
         buf[count++] = (byte)b;
    .Not that the above guarantees thread safety, but I would certainly be willing to go forward with the assumption given that the BufferedOutputStream write method is sychronized.
    How many platforms did you test on? Is your computer a
    multiprocessor? did your calls actually occur simultaneously?
    Thread unsaftiness (theres that word again) does not guarantee a crash,
    it guarantees indeterminate behavior. All excellent recommendations to test my code, and that of the overall system. But I am not going to write a single threaded app simply because the Java core code might not be thread safe. It might not be single thread safe either. There have been and probably still are bugs that will cause the JVM to crash. Those bugs have nothing to do with threads.
    And how do I know the OS is thread safe? I certainly know that there have been bugs associated with the Windows threads implementations. And the linux implementation is also very odd and can probably be assumed to have had/have some problems and that is certainly true respect to linux/java.
    And some point one has to assume that some things are just outside the domain of the system one is writing. At least that is true for the vast majority of systems that get written (one hopes that certain medical systems and traffic control systems spend more time in this area.)

  • How safe is suspend?

    I have a desktop PC, when I quit working I usually put the PC in suspend (to ram) mode instead of turning it off. Once a week (usually Fri or Sat) I finally give it a rest and turn it off for the night. I am wondering how much safe is suspend/resume process under (arch)linux. I noticed that after a resume from suspend certain tasks do not behave as expected (eg: the PC do not restart but hangs at "now rebooting").

    B wrote:Give pm-utils a shot, it's the successor to suspend, and I have good experiences with it.
    yes, I am using pm-utils (I should have been more informative, sorry). It seems to work fine, except for few minor issues, but I was wondering if it is considered safe to suspend to ram instead of turning the pc off.
