How secure is airport? If I use airport and log on to my on-line bank account, can someone intercept the transmission, passwords, etc.?
Very secure, however, two things to consider here:
o Your local wireless network, and
o Your Internet connection between the AirPort and the Bank's website
To protect the first, use WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption on your AirPort-provided wireless network. For the latter, make sure you connect to a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)-protected website. These websites typically have a web address that starts with "https."

  • How really secure is Airport Extreme?

Basically, I want to know just how secure one can make the Airport Extreme?  People have been warning me that NO wifi connection can be made safe and that the password really does little or no good against capable hackers. MAC addresses can be extracted apparently.  Can some expert comment, and also tell me if some software addition can help?
    Thanks,
    John Learned

The strongest form of security that you can choose for home use is WPA2 Personal.
There are several conflicting opinions about whether this type of network can be cracked using very sophisticated tools in weeks or months.
I doubt that even the most dedicated hacker would be willing to park his van out on the street near your home for this time duration....but suppose that anything is possible.
Hackers like easy targets in crowded apartment and condo type areas, so unless you are convinced that the bad guys have already singled you out as a target, you have little to worry about.
You may have heard about using a "Closed Network" or MAC Access Control to help protect the network. There are free tools available on the Internet that will reveal a closed network in a few seconds, and pick off the MAC addresses of devices in a few minutes, so neither of these things will provide much protection for your network.
While most users want their wireless routers to provide as much signal power as possible, you might ask yourself if you really do need to "see" your wireless signal out in the street, or up and down the street.  Cutting back on the broadcast power on the router might be something to consider.

  • How to Connect Airport Express to Existing Wireless Network (Client Mode)

I am posting this for everyone tearing their hair out trying to connect the Airport Express to your own existing home wireless network. After spending 2 hours last night installing this on my father-in-law's home network, I hope to be able to save someone else the agony we went through.
    So here's the situation:
Say you already have your own home network set up, and all you want is to be able to use AirTunes to play music off iTunes into your speaker system. And, you don't need the printer sharing capability nor creation of another wireless network (2 of the features of Airport Express). Then this solution is for you - read on.
Unfortunately, Apple's user manual is very unclear how to connect Airport Express to your own network. When you look at the picture diagram they provide, they show Airport Express picking up its signal from another Apple-oriented base. This can make you think you need to buy another piece of hardware to make it work. DON'T If you read through the manual, the Support section here, etc., you will hear lots of talk about "Client Mode" - and that this is the only way to get it to work. Nice - but no one really tells you how to set up the Airport in client mode.
Do yourself a favor, toss that user manual aside and run these steps.
(Note: These directions assume your DSL/Cable Modem is hooked up to a wireless router or acts as its own wireless router)
    1. Get a cat5 Ethernet cable (anything but an orange cable - that's a crossover cable) like you would use to connect your PC to your router to pick up the Internet.
    2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the router on one end, and to the Airport Express unit on the other end.
    3. Plug in your Airport Express unit to the wall (this will not necessarily become its permanent location - you will be able to move it later). The light will glow solid Amber for about 30-45 seconds while it starts up, then blink Amber. At this point, the unit is ready to operate.
    4. Install the CD to the PC where your iTunes music is stored. This should be painless. Once you open the program, it should detect the Airport unit.
    5. At this point, the on-screen wizard will present you with your options, and walk you through the setup. This is much like the user manual describes - and you should be good to go form here forward.
    Some pointers:
    - When asked if you want to create a new network, join an existing network, or connect via Ethernet, choose the middle option for joining an existing network. You will need to know the name of your network, the password to connect to the network (if present), and the type of encryption used on the network (e.g. WEP, WPA, etc.). Side note, WPA is recommended, as it is a higher level of security than WEP. You will be able to configure the Airport Express unit to automatically login to your network.
    - I would recommend, when creating a password for the Airport Express unit, use the same password as your network, to avoid confusion.
    6. The very last step will ask you to save the settings to the Airport Express. Here's the kicker - when you save the settings, you are TRICKING the Airport Express into no longer acting as a network broadcaster, but instead being a "slave" to your own network. What do I mean? You will lose the connection from your PC to the Airport Express - an error message will pop up telling you the unit can no longer be found. While you might think you did something wrong, you actually were successful!
    7. Unplug your Airport Express, and disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router and the Airport unit. This will no longer be needed.
    8. Go to your desired location where you want to plug in your Airport Express unit. Before plugging it in, connect your Audio cable from the Airport Express to your audio receiver. Once that is connected, then plug in the Airport Express unit. The light will glow solid Amber for 30-45 seconds while it loads, and then will blink Amber for a brief period of time before turning solid GREEN. When this happens, you have successfully connected the Airport Express to your home network!
    9. Go back to your PC with iTunes. Open the Airport software - you should now have a listing for your Airport Express unit in the upper left. Click on this, and the wizard will guide you through connecting - you will need the password you created for the unit. You only need to go through this wizard once, and when finished, the software will tell you that can now use iTunes with your Airport unit.
    10. Open iTunes. On the lower right, you will see a dropdown for Speakers, and it should be defaulted to My Computer. Click on that drop-down, and you will see the name of your Airport unit. Click on that name, and now your music will broadcast to the Airport unit!
    11. Play a song in iTunes. Go to your audio receiver, and connect it to the channel for your external connection to the Airport Express unit. You should hear your music from iTunes. CONGRATULATIONS! =)
I hope these instructions were helpful - I am happy to answer any questions, so feel free to contact me, *******************@*****.**.

Thanks for the detailed directions. You are absolutely correct in stating that people should toss the user manual; it's pretty worthless. I have had a problem setting up my new Airport Express as I have described in an earlier post - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1839873&tstart=45
One quick question - does using your setup process set the AE up as part of a distributed network where the AE is acting as a wireless router where it is extending the range of your network? Or, is it simply a wireless connection to your stereo for iTunes? I am interested in having both, since my AE will be at the other end of the house from the main wireless router.
    Thanks

  • IPhone Security: How secure is the iPhone?

We just purchased iPhones for our family. However, I have a question regarding cyber security on these devices.
Specifically, we have the phones set up to access our MobileMe accounts, and thus the MobileMe password is part of our iPhones. This leads to two questions:
    1) If someone acquires our phones, can they easily reverse engineer the phone to determine our MobileMe passwords?
    2) When we use various free wireless services (for example, while travelling at airports), how secure is the password data as it is passed from our iPhones to MobileMe over the RF spectrum? Could someone easily “listen in” to the communication and sniff out the passwords?
It’s not that crucial now since it is just our MobileMe account, but I would like to use my iPhone for work e-mail and am not sure if this is safe or not.
In addition to these questions, any advice, comments, or other sources on iPhone security would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for sharing your expertise!!!

It depends on what the website does, and the rules are the same as using a wifi laptop:
    A) If a site uses regular HTTP with no encryption, any text data can be intercepted.
    B) Using HTTPS encryption like banks do, data can be sniffed but cannot be read unless a sophisticated hacker can unencrypt the sniffed data.
    C) Using a secure VPN for your iPhone (like HotSpot Shield), you can encrypt traffic between the iPhone and the VPN service so that all your communications are secured regardless of what the website does.
I don't have a MobileMe account, so I don't know whether they layer any encryption over the login, but if they're like many sites, they probably do. As for what happens after login, this article is not very encouraging if the info is still current. That is why I use a VPN.

  • How secure is iPad when travelling?

I plan to take my WiFi only iPad 2 with me for about three weeks of travel.  How secure will I be using free hotel, or Starbucks, or airport WiFi networks?

There's no need to worry yourself over things like this, unless the information is highly confidential...
Few incidents occur where someone will actually bother to log onto a public network and then hack into others' computers/devices in order to gain access to information such as credit card numbers etc... computer viruses and trojans are much better designed for this kind of job.
If security really is a concern, consider using a VPN to access the internet after you have connected to a network.

  • How secure is USB disk file data over the Internet?

I have an Airport Extreme with an external USB drive attached. I can successfully connect to the drive both from the internal network (LAN) and from the Internet. I have secured my drive using user accounts granting either read-only or read-write access. When connecting from the Internet, how secure is the data when it is being transferred over the Internet between the USB drive and my remote device (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.)?

Thank you, Kappy. I sincerely appreciate your input.
It appears that the Airport Express "Share On WAN Port" is not really a secure connection. File data is not secure as it is transferred over the Internet, which is what I suspected. So, in order to secure the data one would need to establish a VPN (or equivalent) connection to the local network and then access the Airport Extreme disk data via the VPN connection. I should note that in this scenario the "Share On WAN Port" would not be needed and should probably be disabled. For me, a VPN connection is necessary unless I only want to store and share files and data that I don't mind others obtaining while in transmission.
This is what I expected, but was hoping for something along the lines of what Apple's Messages does, which encrypts data from end-to-end between two (or more) users in a conversation to ensure the data/content is secure.
    Thanks again.

  • How secure is Keychain?

How secure is Keychain? It has all of my Airport passwords stored. The Keychain PW is the same as the machine PW, so the Keychain security is only as good as the machine PW. What level of encryption is offered by Apple?

Keychain uses Triple Digital Encryption Standard (3DES): http://images.apple.com/macosx/security/docs/MacOSXSecurityTB.pdf
It is reasonably secure. If someone knows your machine password, then they can also unlock your keychain. However, if someone gains access to your machine and just resets the password so they can login, or just copies the data, your keychain is still secure.

  • How secure is internet sharing?

I apologize if this is a stupid question...I am new to sharing and not very tech savvy...just know enough to do what I need to. I recently discovered I can share my internet connection thru airport so I can connect my iPod Touch and use it online and I read the steps needed to do so.
My question is: how secure is this If set it up with the 128-Bit and 13 letter password? I'd like to set it up on my iMac at work, but am afraid of others being able to get on or access it, or my iPod Touch.
I appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks so much!

so long as you don't use the WEP (40 bit) setup, should be ok...
now anything that's wireless, someone could crack if they have enough time & data packets to scan for the keys. but they would be set back to 0 once the password is changed. also, I wouldn't be doing anything at work that you wouldn't want anyone else to see anyway.

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.
Read some details of how TM works so you understand what it will do.

Same as any other iPad or iPhone.
There has been no malware that I have heard of on the iPad.

  • How far does airport extremes range go

how far does airport extremes range go

Apple says up to 300 feet or so, but since tests like this are performed in a very large room with no walls, the specification won't mean much to most of us in the real world.
Bottom line is that it is not possible to make a good guess about distance capabilities in a home without knowing the number of walls and or ceilings the signal must pass through.
(A typicall wall of sheetrock and 2 by 4s will absorb on average about 15-20% of the signal and a ceiling absorbs more because it is thicker).
As a very rough guide...if the signal from the wireless router must pass through 4-5 walls, or a ceiling and 2-3 walls, then there won't be much of it left by the time it reaches a computer or other wireless device.

  • How secure is the default web services?

Just curious how secure the default web services configuration is.
Would mod_security need to be installed?
The server would only host 2 sites but I am concerned about basic security.

Your question is too vague to be answerable.
Any web server security depends largely on what you're doing.
If you're just serving static pages then its pretty secure - there isn't much anyone can do to compromise your server.
If you're running any kind of dynamic content then your security depends on a) the server-side engine you use (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby, etc.) and b) the competency of whoever's writing your code.
If you're using any kind of database-driven content then your security also depends on your database engine, and your ability to secure your database.
The upshot is that the software as delivered is only as good as how you configure and run it. mod_security (if you take the time to configure it) offers some protection, but it doesn't beat taking the time to code your application correctly.

  • How secure is the phones Pin?

    Hey guys,
Had my N96 stolen last night (it is covered just lost 40 very precious mins of video, devastating) and I was wondering, just how secure is my 4 digit pin code on the phone. Can it be bypassed easily? I'm not phishing here so I don't want detailson how anythings done just want the security of knowing that the **bleep** who has my phone can't access whats on there i.e. photo's, numbers etc.
    Thanks

did you set remote lock you can lock it with a text if you did
the phone lock on the phone the Nokia default 12345 is NOT secure at all I think a software update resets it to default 12345
If however it is a SIM pin lock even only 4 digits then that is secure but a different sim will access the phone memory and your vids
I always have the SIM lock on to just to protect my account but the Nokia pin I dont rate at all
Contact the provider for your service THEY CAN LOCK IT OUT of the network on the imie thats not undo able in UK and is secure
but it only stops it making calls not access to the phone internal mem
but some countries do not use the imie lock so it could be sold on abroad
Nokia user / modder since Nokia Orange and Mobira user too before that
