How secure is my Hard Disk?

My Mac Mini was stolen, along with my gorgeous 20" Cinema Display. Disappointing to say the least.
Anyway, the insurance company is being really good (so far) and will be replacing my Mac in a week or so.
What I want to know is how useful my stolen Mac will be to whomever eventually buys it from the low life theif who took it?
Can the HDD be reformatted without the root admin password?
Also, as the serial no. is registerd to me through the Apple Care protection plan I had, can Apple disallow that Mac from ever being updated with System patches?
Whilst I admit I was a bit lax on the whole system security front (never envisioning that someone would make off with the whole box), the lessons I've learned that I hope may be of use to some of you out there.
1) Switch on disk encryption. Losing the data is bad, but having bank a/c and website credentials hacked will be much worse
2) Require authentication on boot up
3) Use your .mac membership to keep updates of everything in a remote site. This might seem costly, but the loss of ALL my digital photos is the one thing that truly bites. I had a huge firewire external disk I backed up to religiously, but that was nicked too.
I'm sure many of you can add to this list.

Can the HDD be reformatted without the root admin password?
Yes, unless the computer has an Open Firmware password set on it. Anyone having a Mac OS X installation disk compatible with that computer can change the administrator account password, and from there can change the root password.
Also, as the serial no. is registerd to me through the Apple Care protection plan I had, can Apple disallow that Mac from ever being updated with System patches?
No.
Having an Open Firmware password set will block attempts to reboot from a CD or start up from a disk other than the one specified in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences. Turning off automatic login from either the Accounts or Security panes of System Preferences will reduce the number of possible methods of breaking in to a system protected by an Open Firmware password.

  • How to upgrade the hard disk of the nomad jukebox

I read the FAQ of nomad on nomadness.net, I wanna know how to upgrade the hard disk of old nomad jukebox with a bigger one?
I also read a artical on tom's hardware about this,
    http://www7.tomshardware.com/mobile/20000/mp3-3.html
    but he gave a link
    http://www.kuren.org/jukebox
that is not available. He mentioned that it need to clone the fist 65536 sectors from the old disk to the new one, but I have not the old hard disk( I bought a second hand nomad jukebox without the original hard disk). How should I do?
Does someone have the image file of the fist 65536 sectors from the old disk?
    Thank you!

That was the old method before Creative published their Bootcode Flasher software.
    Follow the instructions here:
    http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php...ticle&artid=24
All files mentioned are available somewhere on Nomadness. Also check out the sticky thread in their JB section of the forum as it lists what hard dri'ves will work in a JB and which ones won't. I hope you haven't already bought your upgrade hard dri've.
I used the above method without any problems and now have a 20GB JB.

  • HT1338 how to format my hard disk

how to format my hard disk ....my mac book came with no cds

You do this either with a Mountain Lion install disc or drive, which you have to make yourself, or from the Recovery System. For the Recovery System, you reboot while holding down command-R. This boots from a (hidden) recovery partition that is on your hard drive; then you access Disk Utility and do your formatting that way. The Recovery system can do a new install of Mountain Lion from the internet from apple once you have reformatted your drive. Or you can make a ML installer disk from the installer files that you download for future reference.
Here's a page about Recovery mode: OS X: About OS X Recovery
and here's how to make your own ML installer disk: How to Burn OS X Mountain Lion to a DVD or USB Flash Drive..
BTW, you could have figured out all this yourself with a google search.

  • How to increase RAM & Hard Disk a form at run time can use?

Question: How to increase RAM & Hard Disk a form at run time can use?
    Explanation:
I have a problem with a form at run-time. I guess this is due to shortage of RAM/Hard Disk. I want to increase these things so that the form can use more RAM/Hard Disk and it does not crash/cancel. The reason is that when I change/toggle TOOL --> Preferences --> Runtime, Buffer Records and Array Processing parameters, the problem is rectifies intermittantly. That is there is no fix combination of above-mentioned parameters to rectify the problem. After lot of attempts, it gets resolved but only temporarily. Next time I have to modify the form, I get the same problem.
    Please help.

I am still waiting for an answer to the above question.
May be Oracle Corp. or anyabody, please guide.

  • How to make the hard disk visible in a new admin account?

I created a new admin account, in order (hopefully) to solve some problems that I've been having with SPSS21 for Mac.  But when I log on as a new admin account, my hard disk no longer appears on the desktop.  It (and all the folders and files in it) are still accessible by clicking on the hard disk in the path bar in a folder, but it's annoying not to have the icon on the hard disk.  I don't know why the icon for the hard disk does not appear on the desktop.  Does anyone know why, and how to make it appear?  Thanks.

Oh, my god!  I'm so embarrassed that I couldn't figure this out myself, after being a devoted Mac user for three decades!  It's so obvious!  Thank you so much!

  • How can I erase hard disk if SuperDrive is broken (OS 10.6.8)?

I have an old MacBook running OS 10.6.8 which I want to recycle, but its internal SuperDrive doesn't work, so I can't use the install disk to do it.  I tried plugging in Apple's external USB SuperDrive which I bought when I upgraded to a MacBook Pro which has no internal SuperDrive, but the external SuperDrive doesn't accept the disc; it's as if the old MacBook doesn't recognize the external drive.  I'm thus at a loss as to how to proceed to wipe the hard disk.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

The newer version Apple USB Superdrive does not support use with older Mac products
that have a built-in optical drive; so that avenue is not a direct method. Other brands of
relatively inexpensive DVD+CD R/W USB drives can be used with system DVDs to boot
most later Intel-based Macs using the Apple DVD system media discs.
There also has been topic discussions in various locations online about methods to
use a firmware change to newer Apple USB Superdrive, that may work with older Macs
that have built-in optical drives, those which may have failed to function.
The change to the USB external Apple superdrive may void its warranty. I noticed a repair
page at iFixit.com showing how to swap the actual drive out of the Superdrive, and in the
added comments, someone had posted a suggested (but not recommended) method of
modifying the Apple USB Superdrive's ability to work with older unsupported Macs.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_USB_SuperDrive (4 comment/questions, not definitive)
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/23023/Can+I+use+the+AirSuperDrive+as+an+Exte rnal+Drive+the+Mac+laptops
So perhaps the idea may work, or it may not. Other less costly third-party somewhat
more disposable DVD RW USB player/recorders that can work & boot Macs have
been discussed in the ASC discussions. Several brands, a few links to online sites
that had them listed. Usually for under $50.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How can I create hard disk space without emptying the Trash?

I moved everything in my Pictures folder into Trash, not realising the folder also had the iPhoto library.
So now all my photos have gone from iPhoto, though they are still in the Trash folder, which has not been emptied.
I have attempted to restore in two ways:
    1)  Through Time Machine (which has most but not all of the iPhoto library backed up, and
    2)  By dragging the iPhoto library from Trash into Pictures.
In both cases the restore action fails because during the process I get the message that the start up disk is running out of space.
One way to create space would be to empty the Trash, but I can't do that because I would lose the photos not backed up on Time Machine.
I was not aware of any space problems previously, so I wonder if something I have done in this process has filled up my hard disk?  But in any case, the immediate problem remains - how to create space (which will hopefully allow me to restore the photo library), without clearing out the Trash folder.
Thanks for reading this, and any advice will be much appreciated.

The following comments are really off topic because unfortunately they come too late to help you in your particular case.  They may even amount to venting.
The way iPhoto hides your photos in packages that are not readily accessible in the Finder—because you have to Control-Click and open the package to show its contents first—is the main reason I immediately delete iPhoto from my hard drive whenever it gets installed by an OS installation or upgrade.  I hate the "Libraries" paradigm in Apple's Apperture and in Adobe's Lightroom.
I much prefer the Adobe Bridge paradigm which is totally transparent and instantly reflected in the Finder, just as any changes you make in the Finder is instantly reflected in Bridge.
After years of trying, I've given up trying to find somene's ear at Apple to let them know how unacceptable iPhoto is (on so many levels).
Similarly, I have disabled Time Machine on my Leopard boot drive, preferring to rely on SuperDuper, although my main working boot drive is a Tiger volume.  Because of their intrusiveness, I've also permanently disabled Spotblight and the Dashboard on all my OS installs.

  • How to remove a hard disk file on storage

    Hello,
In my process, I would like to remove an additional disk.
To achieve that task, I have found "Remove VM device". It is a VMware box that I can use to remove any device (including Hard disks) and I have not found another box to do that.
But file on storage is not deleted, only the logical disk on the VM is removed.
So I was wondering if there could be another way to remove also the file on the storage?
Is a “dedicated” remove Hard disk vmware box exists in Tidal versions greater to 2.3.1?
    thank you.
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

There is no specific "Remove Hard Disk" activity in 2.3.1 or the upcoming 2.3.4.
Have you tried the PowerCLI command "Remove-HardDisk"? If that works for you, in 2.3.1 you can use a Windows PowerShell activity to run PowerCLI and execute a simple script that runs this command against the VM. Unfortunately, this requires connecting to vCenter directly (not through the adapter) and you will need to supply credentials.
Or, better, use the "Execute PowerCLI Script" activity in the upcoming 2.3.4 VMware Adapter.. where you can run PowerCLI activities that use your existing VMware vCenter Server target's connection and don't need supply credentials separately.

I Have connected an external usb hard disk to airport time capsule. pleasea help me to configure it from my ipad and use it from my ipad.

You need the disk formatted HFS+ on a Mac.. you cannot format disks from the airport utility and there is no hard disk utility of course on ipad.
Once you set it to share.. then you need to load a file app to the ipad as it has no ability to natively handle files.. check out filebrowser as a standard one.. but there are several available.

  • HT1349 How to format my hard disk and restart

THis aftrnoon my system wouldn't start. a black screen with OS X utility. Now I want to format my hard disk and install  OS. X

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
