How seriously do we take this point system?
Seriously, do points matter? Do you want them? Why if so, why, if not? Are points any good? Do points make you feel more secure? Are points pointed and sharp or are they blunt and blunted? Do points encourage you to answer questions or do they discourage you?
Points are not a line... but connecting two pints makes a line... So do points awarded in an answer draw aline and stop all further discussion?
I've been following threads in DW General and AI General. I notice that threads, by and large, stop far sooner than they would have. I put that down to the lack of participants for various reasons and the 'Correct' answer flag. So much knowledge and information is not being shared.
True, a lot of the posts came from the NNTP side... but a lot also came from the web side... these forums are killing all spontaniety.
However, the killers are:
1/ Lack of NNTP
2/ Points
3/ Correct answers

Hi I'm Kath's friend Patty and now I'm feeling bad. I came to the forums to ask questions of the experienced people and I received incredible help that I was so grateful for. Now I see my thread referenced from Jacob like I did something wrong. I didn't mark correct answer because Jacob led me to believe that capitalization is an area that is ambiguous so there is more than one correct answer. So obviously I didn't do something right. I marked every response as helpful because it was (except for Ramon's response that wasn't directed at me).
Geeze, if a person asking for help needs to understand the point system, somebody better make it clear to us. I didn't even know I was the one that was supposed to check the helpful or correct answer box until Kath told me that. On another thread when I marked correct, thinking that I could choose helpful or correct as many times as it was responded to, the thread showed as "Answered" and I didn't think that was good. Because if my question shows "Answered" why would anyone waste their time giving their input.
Jacob you helped me tremendously and I feel bad that I don't understand the point system enough to give you the proper praise and gratitude that I feel. And I learned early on back in the "good old days" of the Adobe forums that there isn't really one "correct answer" there are many ways to accomplish a task.

Sorry folks, but word has come down from above that abuse of the point system is counter-productive. There are management types that actually believe some users see points as an incentive to provide a quality answer, and that they wouldn't do so without the points, but that's not a widely held opinion among hosts. Nevertheless, I have to lock the thread, and warn you that at some point there will be official sanctions for those who post threads with the sole purpose of gaming the point system.
If they don't want the point system abused then we need to do away with it. This forum is becoming less and less a place I want to help at. I think I will start looking for another Photoshop forum.They've never read the Gandhi quote:

How long does it take for points from a canceled order to be returned?
I used a My Best Buy certificate on an order, but decided to cancel it. How long will it take for the points to show back up?

I am wondering how this point system works? I had 915 points this morning and now end up with 905. Instead of going up, it fluctuates from time to time. Initially, it use to show up next to my name with 915 but then that went down to 514???
Is it only me or someone else has seen this behaviour?
I am not points buff but it seems pretty strange that one day infact in the same day the numbers fluctuates like they do in stock exchange.

Nope, in this case, Kartik already has "the hard way" behind him.
During an investigation into a nest of points gamers in October last year, Kartik was investigated as well for having for having participated in one of the threads. There were many being investigated. Other symptoms matched (we have some strict rules for this) - so the mistake was perhaps understandable - but on the other hand I should perhaps have looked a bit further to see that Kartik's post patterns were different to those of the others (who were not located very far away from Kartik..).
Anyway... as they faded away into the annual ponits total of those who are being transported into the world where the A.G. calendar is used ( Anno Guestus ) ... Kartik's ID faded away with them.
Kartik contacted me about it and I took his word for the expanation that he was not involved. I am very glad that I did that, as he has been a big help in the ABAP forums.
I don't have the exact figures, but last I heard we have deleted more than 50 thousand user ID's for ponits gaming. I am always very carefull when investigating this and there are other people who check it as well before any action is taken.
To date, to my knowledge, Kartik has been the only mistake we have made. Others have begged for mercy, but that is different. Hence my comment that he should wear the difference like a "battle scar" caused by the "journal entry", until Micheal can possibly fix it.

Silly idea...but why not remove the points system?

I just re-activated my interest in the SAP SDN community and have noticed a lot of discussions around points, Jacobs deals, negative points, quality of content, moderators, etc. Basically a whole lot of discussion, energy and effort towards something that should be a byproduct of an active community, not the core of it.
How about just removing the whole points system?
I can understand why it was initially in place to quickly build up a community, but I assume that you have reached the critical mass and I think you might actually be losing some of the good part of the mass because of this points system (because it might impact the overall quality).
I have been a member of Sun's Java community since 97 and though they have always had "duke dollars" it has never been a motivating factor to participate there and I don't think a lot of emphasis is put on them either. The community became very fast self controlling with people put in place for not being clear with their questions, etc. and I have always thought that it has been quite a good, simple community which has benefited everyone quite a bit. This is not to say that I don't appreciate SAP SDN, but it is just a sample of a community which works without requiring direct "rewards".
Having a link to your business card for answering questions as well as getting a profile with articles, whitepapers, etc. is in my opinion plenty of recognition and for those who you (as the forum owners & moderators) see as being truly exceptional you have the Mentor / Expert (sorry, can't remember what you called them but a sort of fellowship) model and the less people you have in that group the more they will be valued and the more people are interested in truly good quality content instead of quantity.
The only post I found related to this topic with a quick search was Reg Award Points but there might be more around as well. My apologies if this is a topic which has been discussed enough already (please link this to such discussions if relevant, though won't reward any points ).
So how about it. Any chance of dropping the points and trust that the community will survive without them? I think it would do just fine.

In most change management activities, it takes time to affect behavioral change.
But as for the World Food Program initiative, you raise a very important point about continuing to spread the word concerning the food for points idea. I would recommend taking a look at this website called [SAP Feeding Knowledge|http://www.sapfeedingknowledge.com/] and would be bold enough (or perhaps impassioned enough) to recommend that if this idea speaks to you, if you think it important enough to repeat to others, you take the initiative and further spread the word. That can be done by reminding folks in the forums (perhaps even where such contentious point discussions or debates around quality occur) or it could be that you choose to blog about it either here on SDN/BPX or in a personal blog space. I'm your willing assistant in that activity!
Viral knowledge-spreading about this, increases the likelihood of the program's success. And forgive me if I sound like I am evangelizing the cause, but that is exactly what I am dedicated and determined to do. Having recently visited in countries where this program is designed to help people, I can vouch for its importance as an eye witness to its success and would think it worth everyone's time to at least read about how a simple act of participation here can help alleviate suffering and make a difference in the world. Not only do the nubes asking the questions not really know if an answer is correct or not. But many people don't bother to list the question as answered or if they do they just mark the question as answered without handing out points. This point system is not well thought out.

That's the whole point isn't it? The points system has no bearing on reality. Points i gained in Dreamweaver have no validity in say After Effects... yet the poor poster in AE will think i'm an AE expert too. And then, as you point out, the whole awarding of points is all belly up. It's really a joke!
Which is why i don't understand why guys freak when we joke about it... the moment you see 'points' in the topic, don't, as Ansury said, read the thread! There's nothing serious that can be said about this and the 'correct answer' crap except remove them both. Except, of course, for those who love to see the points under their name, the little red blobs increasing and the smug feel of seeing that mdeallion thingy next to their name. -
How long does it take to download a @#$@#% movie! It has been at it for over an hour. Seriously? Who has hours to wait around BEFORE watching a movie? It now says 2 hours 4 minutes. Unbelievable! This is the worst way to rent movies!

i have my dns settings set to the local isp. get 8mbps through speed test.. more often than not i can download an HD movie immediately, and SD movie has no issues at all..
But tonight.. even though as i write this i have disabled all other devices on my network and am still getting my 8mbps downlod from speed test.. Ive just paid for Pacfic Rim.. it played immediately, but got to 46 minutes, and simply stopped.. i backed out resumed play and it bounced to 9 hours before i can watch.. i reset my modem/router, restarted the apple tv and its now currently sitting on 106 hours..
my guess is it's the akamai network doing something stuipid.. this is a regular occurence and if you look deep enough, many people complain of the same issue...
the worst thing about apple is i cant get a refund.. the second worst thing about apple even though im a huge fan, there is absolotely no point me writing this because apples first point of call is to blame the end user and other enviromental factors, meanwhile covering their own ***.. I've spent the last 18 years of my work life building and supporting IT/IS infrastructure.. so im not a dumb ***.. this is an apple issue, plain and simple.. maybe time to switch to amazon or azure. -

I think this is wrong for the following simple reasons:
It takes too much effort to gather the necessary points to eventually create any level of visibility. People who are just after points will loose interest when they realize how difficult it is to get points. It simply does not pay off.

How long would it take the Apple Store to fix this common problem?
I have the 2010-2011 macbook black screen of death, some days it crashes at least 4 times a day! screen just blacks out and i have to restart. other than that everything works fine

Has anyone experienced problems with Mackeeper? I did not complete downloading this software. Yet, occasionally when on the internet, I will have the MacKeeper multi-colored circle replace my pointer. How do you deal with this?

I think I need to reinstall max, but at this point, how?
First some background...
I'm installing a new digitizer into a PXI-based setup. I installed NI Scope v3.8.7, as it came with the digitizer and the instructions directed that I should install it, first. Upon restart (what the instructions said to do after the install) Windows found new hardware (and, per the instructions, I'd NOT installed any new hardware yet.) Based on the evidence, Windows seemed to need to update many drivers after that new NI Scope installation; after clicking to auto- find them all, one by one, I finally got to the point where the new hardware could finally be installed. Then, per the instructions again, I powered down and unplugged the PXI chassis etc. I next installed the new hardware (digitizer.) Windows responded with the new hardware wizard upon powering it all back up again, and auto found the necessary software. Following this Windows responded that the new hardware had been installed and was ready to use. At Windows seemed satisfied.
Now my issue...
I happily clicked Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX), a tool that'd been used for some time in the past, and that's when my turmoil began. MAX threw an exception, but based on my searches here, NI has never heard of it despite it being known (MAXKnownException....sounds like something known, to me that is.) Searching some more based on the exception description I found instructions saying I should create a report for NI as well as pass on the log and dump files for the exception. I was told I could do this (create the HTML report) from the command line, but the most I found I could do from the command line was run MAX. But this is a problem, because in the target system (I was going through the sequence on a different machine, first,) the PXI system, MAX doesn't run. Rather, it goes through the motions; it starts, intializes, loads plug ins and then throws the exception that NI doesn't recognize (or so it seems to me.) Continuing after the exception (on the target machine,) an option given to the user, does no good, for "Devices and Interfaces" doesn't expand; rather, just freezes with an hourglass (I think it was.)
So I'm thinking my next step with this target system should be to reinstall MAX (I just downloaded it, I think -- syscfg120full.exe -- notice how the filename says nothing about MAX???,) but as yet I haven't determined if anything should be uninstalled, first, before reinstalling MAX, particularly MAX itself. Should the old MAX be uninstalled, first? Or is it acceptable to reinstall MAX over itself, despite any past learned knowledge with other software? Does the installer check for old versions and adjust itself, etc? Is anything I'm saying sounding familiar? If I shouldn't reinstall MAX to at least have a functioning MAX to work with to get moving with the new hardware, then what should I do instead? My goal at this stage of the game is to install and test the new hardware, before I start in on the coding, the unknown territory. Right now what's expected to be functioning doesn't function, so I can't move forward.Probably along these lines...

How much space left for the new System Restore Point(s) creation ??

MY LAPTOP : single OS, windows 7 sp1 , ultimate 64 , 2gb ram , 4ghz processor,
kaspersky antivirus full,
total hard disk 150gb, C: 38.9gb, 11.2 gb free space on C: ,
allocation for SR Points for C: 2.73gb (7%)
PROBLEM:(SR Point: System Restore Point)
sir, i am facing a problem of false reporting of the space occupied by a SR Point and so, it is unable to know how much space is left for new SR Points such that the old ones dont get eliminated. Here it is always increasing as the time progresses
1. I created a SR Point at 9:21PM space occupied being shown 114.97mb
2. The same SR point showing the space occupied at 9:23pm 115.06mb
3. After 20 hours it is being shown as 272.36mb !
4. After sometime ,it would show the space (occupied) even more than the actual allocation for eg.
the full allocation is 2.73gb and it will show 3.1gb occupied by the same single SR Point
[for solution of the problem i am managing the single SR Point that is by not doing anything that will trigger the creation of new SR Point(s) ]
SNAP 1 : plz see only one SR Point is there on c:(the other one is system image back up on another drive)
SNAP 2 : Plz see that the space occupied by the same single SR Point is 276.50 mb which was 114.97 mb initially.SORRY , ONLY TWO IMAGES ALLOWED!
HISTORY : since last 6 months the laptop is with me and when I received it, system protection was off. When I made it active , it used to create SR points very frequently for e.g. 10 points in 2 days. So I stopped its automatic creation
2 months back. I disabled both the triggers and the task.
SNAP 3 : both the triggers and task disabled.
NOW
(.) it makes restore points either manually (by me) or by system in the case of install or updates only,
And I am comfortable with it !
(.) SR Point restore is full success !
(.) but the PROBLEM is there !
So,
Is something wrong going to happen to the hard disk ?
Is it a malicious activity ?
Does a full defragmentation for a drive deletes all the restore points on the drive ? (it happens here!)

Yesterday we were forced to perform a non-authoritative sync of the SYSVOL folder as replication had stopped because one of the DCs had been disconnected from it's replication partner for more than 60 days (caused by a unexpected shutdown and we did not
pick up on the fact replication had stopped until now).
I performed the non-authoritative sync of the SYSVOL folder and now the folder is in state 2
ReplicatedFolderName ReplicationGroupName State
SYSVOL Share Domain System Volume 2
and has been for more than 12 hours. The DFS replication health report, reports "This member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder SYSVOL Share".
How long should it take and is there anyway to force it so that replication can resume?I'm fairly sure it's not tombstoned. Here is the DCDIAG output:
