How should i back-up my PC to transfer my files to iMac and continue on iMac for back-up?

I'm upgrading to an iMac very soon. What/how should i back-up my PC, then migrate to my iMac, and then continue to use hard drive to continually back-up my iMac? I'm concerned about compatibility issues and formatting and so on...

How should I back up? - Ethernet HD vs Time Machine

The rundown:
-I think it would be pointless to back up my whole computer since I just want certain files / folders to remain secured.
-I want to have access to these files remotely (do not want .mac account)
-Want the functionality of NAS drive to share media / files w/ others on my small home network.
With that said, I have so many options, but I have read nothing that leads me to get an NAS drive since Time Machine is hit or miss with it. Or I could use Carbon Copy Cloner (anyone used this?) w/ an NAS drive to back up the folders I want.
Any suggestions? I have reached an impasse in my research as to the best option. How should I back up my important files and folders?

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

How should I move all of my Final Cut Pro files to an external drive?

My MacBook Pro doesn't have enough space to hold all of my Final Cut Pro X files (my internal hard drive is only 120GB), and I bought an external hard drive that has 120GB capacity too but want to move all of my FCP files to that drive. What exactly should I be moving? Do I move the application itself? And how do I tell FCP where to find all of my media? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question, I'm relatively new to Macs.

The application remains in the Applications folder.
The best way is to copy the projects by duplicating them to the new drive. Do that from inside the application. Duplicate the projects with all referenced events. When all the projects and media have been copied and are working correctly then you can delete them from your internal drive.
Caution: make sure the media is actually in the events you're duplicating. If not, use the organize events function, or you will lose the media.

How should i export already h.264 compressed video/audio files after i edit them?

I am recording gameplay footage off computer with a program that compresses the video and audio. After I edit the footage how should i export it? I don't want to lose quality by double compressing it.

You need to explore Compound Clips. This workflow may or may not be of help.
Select an Event with clips in it and press Option+G to make a (blank) compound clip.
Select the Event Browser, create a new Event and call it 'Effects'.
Drag the Compound Clip into this Event.
Right-click the clip and select 'Open in Timeline'.
Select the timeline and press Option+W. This will add a Gap Clip to the timeline.
Select the gap clip and press Ctrl+D then type in the duration you want the clip to be.
Now open a project and select and copy one of the clips with effects etc.
Open the Compound Clip in the Timeline again, select the gap clip and press Option+Cmd+V to paste the effects into your Compound Clip.
This clip is now saved in your Browser and will remain there for you to copy and then paste the effects into any clip in any project.
It's a bit clunky, but it works - and once you learn about Compound Clips, you can work wonders with them. As an example, if you want to add more effects without overwriting the effects in the Compound Clip, simply make the Compound Clip into a Compound Clip (again) and add the effects. They will be added to the original effects.

How do I create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user

This is why I think I need to.
My computer got hit by lightening, and I may have created a new user account through netinfo rather than system preferences /accounts/+user. Mail used to open twice, but no longer. Now, Safari askes me for my keychain password twice, Spotlight can't find a folder on the computer when the search is restricted to folder and computer, though the folder is there and easyfind finds it, and when System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy has the hard drive icon added, then deleted, Spotlight still does not find anything. (Yes, everything is backed up, on CD, DVD, and online.) Microsoft Tec Support says

When you contacted us on August 8, you had requested assistance with Microsoft Office 2004, as your installation of the updates was unable to find the correct version of the software to update. After creating a New MAC User, we identified the issue to be with a corrupt MAC User account, and not a Microsoft issue. "
I believe Microsoft. So, creating a new user was easy.
But copying files uses up too much hard drive (movies, music), and may miss keychains, preferences, mail, address book, and documents. Since Spotlight no longer works, who knows what is happening. (Yes, I've repaired persmissions, and disk repair. No change). I'm using up my hard drive trying to move files to the new user. If I share files, or put them into a public folder, then delete the old user, will I still have the old user's files in the new user's account? It is not clear to me what I should be trying to do in order to create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user. Thanks.
My responses will be slow, because I have to drive to town to use the internet. I've ordered a new airport which may take care of that problem. SO be patient.

I need to do the EXACT same thing, but have no idea how. Has anyone out there done this?
My situation is a tad different..this is a new Mac (and I'm a brand new Mac user). Tons of querks occur under my original account (videos won't run, Safari won't support certain plug-ins). I spent 6 hours on the phone w/ 4 different Apple Reps and nobody could fix it. A rep finally looked at my MacBook Pro in person today. He created a new account just to see if that would work and under that new account, everything works perfectly fine (no querks, can view video). He tried switching a million settings in my original account to no avail.
He said to create a new account (as he did) and move my files over to the new account and then go back to the original and delete it. How do you do this?! I can't figure it out! I've got a new account created, but of course it just has the default folders in it w/ the little red icons next to them! Thanks in advance!

How should i delete partition without getting rid of specific files?

sorry if the question isnt clear. ill try to explain. i have a 500gb toshiba external hard drive i connect usb to my macbook pro and i basically was going ti use it as a second back up start up for my mac. i have never gotten any help from a apple person. so bare with me. in disk utility theres three things that pop up when i connect it. macintosh hd to far left, i can only verify and repair disk.
below it to the right is first partition lalo stuff roomy . it's format is logical partition abd has capacity of 279.13 gb and available gb is 31.21 used gb is 247.92. 4619 files. i can only verify or repair disk.
below that partitionis lalos stuff 2 . now this partition is a mac os extended case sensitive journaled format. 219.65 gb capacity, available is 42.86 gb. used is 176.79 gb. number of files 3847. can verify or repair disk.
now i basically thinki have similair files almost exact double in each partition. id really like to just safely without screwing up open it up so i can use the space thats not being used. but i am not sure when i go to combine the partitions if im going to rid the files.
when i go to partition layout the second 2 partition is almost fill with blue .. it said you may only merge this partition with the one before it. i can press the minus... it warns me. it sais the first partition will be erased... so i dont know what to do... i can try copying what i can one by one into my time capsule jsut to make sure i dont lose much if in fact once i go ahead and combine them it truly is the first partition that is cleared and it leaves the second stuff 2 alone... any ideas what to do? thanks.
is there any easy way in disk utility to like just combine them both and have it not double up the items that are the same???

You cannot combine partitions. I don't think even expensive 3rd-party apps can do that.
You'll have to copy the files you need from the "lower" partition elsewhere, delete it, expand the upper one down into the vacated space, then copy the files back into it.

Hello loghmani,
If your output is saturating try to reduce your relay amplitude and/or reduce the gain Kc of the PID controller before starting the autotuning procedure. You can find more information about each of the parameters that you've inquired about at this KnowledgeBase article.
I would recommend taking a look at the General Auto PID Simulator.vi example. You can find this example by doing a search in the example finder or by clicking linked example at the bottom of the detailed help page of the Autotuning PID.vi.
If you haven't looked at the PID user manual that also contains useful information on setting up PID algorithims and Autotuning.

MS-DOS/FAT32 if the drive doesn't need to contain files which are 4GB or larger. If it does, there's no solution which doesn't require third-party software; in this case, you may want to set up a network instead.

How can I convert a feature length HD 25fps .mov file to NTSC and preserve the exact duration?

I seem to stumble over a small but significant timeline distortion: I'm trying to convert a full-length feature film file (1:52:07:01) from the source file, which is full HD at 25 fps to .m2v in NTSC for use on DVD. The picture quality is excellent, especially with highest quality settings, but even using Frame Controls, allowing Compressor to choose the ideal frame rate and setting the duration of the target file at 100.000% of the source file, the result has now repeatedly been 7 seconds shorter than the original. (Which, by my estimation, would in fact be about 0.1% out, so more than the tolerance thresold indicated.)
Ordinarily, this might not be a big problem, if it weren't for the fact that the film is subtitled in three languages and this means that from about a third into the film now these subtitles in DVD Studio Pro appear progressively out of synch. (And anyone working with DSP will know how cumbersome shifting subtitle clips is...)
Any help greatly appreciated.

thanks again russ for your help with this - i've been able to solve the problem. i did try your approach, though for reasons which probably have nothing to do with anything, the export didn't complete and i ended up with a file that suddenly stopped, twenty minutes short of the ending.
in the mean time, though, i rendered both picture and sound out at 100.1% of the source file duration (which is the relative length compressor calculated when i used frame controls to set the output file to precisely the absolute lenght of the source file) and this seems to have worked. i now have an NTSC formatted .m2v and an .ac3 file, which are in synch with each other and with the original time line and therefore with the subtitles.
hope if anyone comes across a similar issue, this may be useful to know.
