How should I format an external hard drive to work with a Mac and a PC?

I need to transfer some video files from a PC to a Mac, and would like to know to best format the drive such that I can move files from the PC to the Mac.
Thanks,
Hal

MS-DOS/FAT32 if the drive doesn't need to contain files which are 4GB or larger. If it does, there's no solution which doesn't require third-party software; in this case, you may want to set up a network instead.

  • Formatting a lacie hard drive to work on a Mac and Pc

I'm trying to get a lacie hard drive to run with both a Mac and PC. I'm formatting the drive using FAT32 on the PC but it's limiting me to 32Gb partitions. I do have another Maxtor drive with a 111Gb Fat32 partition and the Mac allows me to read and write to it, so I know it's possible. Any ideas how to format the drive with just one large partition. Thanks

    Hi MC,
Connect the hard drive to your Mac and format it as MS-DOS. It will work with both Mac and Windows.

  • How to format an external hard drive - to be accessed by mac and pc

I have four large video files on my mac pro that I to transfer to a friend's external hard drive. It's a new hard drive so is unformatted at present. My friend has a Vista laptop and XP PC which I know won't recognise a Mac formatted drive.

  • I can't get my new samsung hard drive to work with my mac and tv

I bought my first ever hard drive today. It is a Smasung M3 Portable 1.5 TB.
At first I plugged it in and it wouldn't let me drag anything from finder over to the hard drive. I did some research (googling) and followed the steps to change the format to 'Mac OS extended (Journaled)' which allowed me start dragging files across.
I then put a movie on the hard drive, waited for it to copy then plugged it into my TV (hoping to sit back and watch said movie). However the TV would not let me even open the hard drive.
I did some more "research" and read that if I changed the format to 'MS-DOS FAT' it would let me use the hard drive on Mac and PC. I tried that but still had the same trouble of the hard drive not working on the TV.
Basically, I want to use the hard drive as storage/ back up for my files BUT ALSO to put all of my movies on it and plug it into my TV.
    Can someone please help me.
PS- I am not very tech savvy. I won't be able to do anything too technical.
    Thanks you in advance (:

maybe this link will help http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/play-media-files-mac-formatted-external-hard-dr ive-hdtv/ unfortunately its for file up to 4 GB size, otherwise try to connect your mac directly to your Tv or I suggest contacting SAMSUNG about this issue, maybe the have assigned softwares for this formatting issues like in western digital for example.

  • How can a format an external hard drive to Fat 32 format

how can i format an external hard drive to a Fat 32

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT)  Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Which format for external hard drive to use with time machine backup and connect to windows laptop?

Hi!  I have an external hard drive on which I have transferred my iTunes library (just mine - not others).  I have also a folder containing just films (some but not all of which are in iTunes too)  Everything has been working just fine until yesterday I noticed that Time Machine was not including the external hard drive in back up as it wasn't formatted.  So I have moved everything back to the Mac hard drive and and ready to format the external hard drive - but understand that if I do the contents cannot be opened from a windows laptop ...  is that right?  Is there are format I could choose that would allow Time Machine to back up and allow Windows to open as well (the idea being that I take the external hard drive with me on holidays etc!!)  Many thanks for any advice.

ok - I understand.  I have managed so far to format the drive (on windows) to exFAT file system - which apparently works with both Windows and Mac - but you're  correct - it will not be included in time machine backup as I have checked the back up files and Samsung is not showing.  Reckon I'm onto having to buy yet another portable hard drive just for windows - or of course buy myself a new mac book!!  Can I ask you please - does the drive have to be clear of everything before I change the format - or can I change it with the files still in there?  Also, got any quick ways duplicating the files onto another External Hard drive (for use on the windows laptop)  At the moment the files are taking 2/3 hours + to copy over!  Thank you!

  • Thunderbolt 2 external hard drive not working with Macbook Pro (early 2011)

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I hope you guys can help me with this:
I've recently bought an external hard drive that works on Thunderbolt 2 (LaCie d2 3TB). When I connect the new drive to my Macbook Pro through the thunderbolt port, the drive isn't recognized. However, the drive works fine through a USB connection.
I thought that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are compatible, however this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it's because the OS X / driver / firmware version that I'm working on that is not updated? I work on an early 2011 Macbook Pro: OS X Version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
Thank you very much for your help!
    Daniel

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • How should I reformat my external hard drive?

I have just purchased a new 21.5" iMac and I will be moving from PC to iMac. I currently have a 2.5TB external hard drive which I have connected to my PC laptop that I use to store and watch movies. My question is how should I format/partition my external hard drive so that I can use it with my new iMac? The external hard drive will solely be used with my new iMac (it won't be connected/used with my laptop again) and I am ok with losing the data on the external hard drive as I have backed up the data currently on it onto another hard drive. I have tried to research what format to use but I am a little confused as to which one is the best and I am looking for some advice.

    Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • How do i format a external hard drive?

i got a external hard drive to use as a back out. but i have no idea how to format the external HD. what should i do? how?
    thank u

connect the hard drive to the mac
run disk utility (found in the applications/utilities directory)
the drive should be displayed in the lefthand pane of the disk utility window, click on it to select it
click the 'partition' tab, it should show the current format and allow you to alter it if necessary, for mac use the "mac os extended (journalled)" format
once you've formatted and/or partitoned the drive it is a good idea to go to the 'erase' tab and use it to write zeros to the disk

  • How do I format an external hard drive to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

I am in Disc Utilities, but I can't figure out how to format my external drive. It is at 0, ready to go... Just need the steps...
    Thanks,
    Ham

    Hi(Bonjour)!
The following process will erase everything on your external HD and reformat it to Mac OS journaled partition.
    1) open disk utilities application.
    2) click your external hard drive's name in the left column.
    3) select the "erase" tab in right.
    4) select "Mac OS X extended journalized" in local menu.
    5) click "erase button".
Formatting a 250 Gig hd can take much than one hour...

  • How can I format an external hard drive to Fat 32?

My brother wants to connect an external hard drive to his Sony PS3 for backup purposes. He bought a Western Digital 3TB "MyBook for Mac".
The PS3 requires the drive to be Fat 32 format. So I hooked the drive up to my new-ish iMac and went into the Disk Utility, selected "Partition", then said I wanted one partition.
I named the drive "FAT32", selected "MS-DOS (FAT)" for the Format.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM: when I go into the "options" menu in order to select "Master Boot Record", it is grayed out. One guy told me that it was because my computer was corrupted, but the same thing happens on my parents (older) iMac.
Another person said it had to do with the fact that the drive was 3TB. Whu...?
If anybody could help with this issue, I would be VERY grateful.

Thank you AnaMusic... this is a nice resource for information.
However I am still not sure I understand why I can't actually DO the partition/formatting. Any idea why the "Master Boot Record" is grayed out? That's the part that has me stymied. As far as I can tell I'm doing all of the required steps correctly.
Again, thank you for your help.

  • How do i use an external hard drive in conjunction with my itunes account?

I'm having so much trouble locating music from my itunes account that i previously transferred onto an external hard drive.  I regularly get messages with each sync i try to do telling me that songs could not be located.  Also when i try to play certain songs they have a circled in front of them which prevents me from playing them even on my computer.  I've tried everything in my knowledge to rectify this problem but i just cannot find a solution. Please help.

    Hello ryanbenson,
With this issue its best to start from scrach.
-Create a folder on your external, call it itunes music.
-Find all of your music on your computer and cut and paste it all into that folder.
-In itunes click music under library on the left and delete all of your music.
From here you want to add everything back into itunes from the itunes music folder on your external.
-At the top of itunes click edit, prefrences, then advanced.
-Make sure keep itunes folder organized is checked.
-Make sure copy files when adding to library is un checked.
-At the top it shows iTunes media folder location, to the right of that you can change the location to the external hard drive, to the itunes music folder.  You will have to keep the external connected to play songs in itunes and sync but this is how my itunes is set up.
-Click ok on the bottom right of the prefrences window
    After all that,
-Click file at the top, then add FOLDER to library
-Navigate to your external and click the folder that has all the music.
-Click ok or add folder or choose folder
From here all music will start importing back into the library. iTunes will stay organized. You will be able to sync and play your music again.
    Hope this helps.
