How should I give itunes autonomy to my children now that they are in high school and have used my Mac and my itunes account to buy music for years, including all gift cards given to them. They now both have their own computers.

When my children were younger, and needed more help and oversight, I had them purchase songs with my permission, often with gift cards that they had been given on various occaisions. Now, however, they both have laptops, they would like to split out "their" music and books, sync their Itouches to their own system, and I would love to have 9000 less Taylor Swift songs stored on my hard drive. Also, it seems that I can't set up independent Itunes accounts for them without a credit card, however they both get gift cards several times a year. A suggestion for this? It must happen to a lot of families. Thanks.

Unfortunately you cannot split (nor merge) items purchased with an AppleID. I am not clear on what you will have to do to allow them continued access to their music on your account. Apple no longer has DRM protection in its music but then I also hear people have all kinds of authorization issues when trying to synch so it sounds like they still keep restrictions on what you can do with the music when trying to move it about. I'll let somebody more experienced with syncing answer this part. You may have to authorize their computers and devices to your AppleID to allow them all functionality with the music.
Ideally you would have set them up with their own AppleIDs years ago but...

I have 4 x 300+ page PDFs (made from iPhone photo jpgs of old typed documents) that I made into PDFs and then tried OCR but it failed saying the pages exceed the 45 x 45 inch limit.
Is there anyway I can reduce the 45 inch problem - for each batch/multiple page file - and not have to resize each jpg image individually ?

Overcome the 45 inch limitation? You don't.
What to do? Ensure the process you use to create PDF outputs a page size that does not bump/exceed 45 inches.

First, please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. The only people who will reply to your posts are we your fellow users. iTunes Support will never respond to posts made here.
As to your issue, confirm with your bank that they do not block access from on-line services or otherwise have restrictions on with whom a card can be used. For some company cards, such blocks can be set up. If you confirm that no such restrictions are in place, post back and we'll go from there.

Hello, thank you for your prompt answer. I did have an idea that Home sharing might be the answer but could not quite figure out how to do it. I have enabled home sharing in my iTunes account, put in username and password, clicked on creat etc. But the homs sharing icon doew not appear in the left side of iTunes. So I got stuck. There's info here on setting up separate libraries and user accounts. You won't have to reload (or re-import) all the music, just copy it.
The reason I suggest separate accounts on the Mac is because if you have the two libraries under the same user account, iTunes will also open the last library that was open in that account, and you'll always have to be mindful of which library that is. If you open iTunes and find it's not your library, you'll have quit, relaunch holding the option key and select the other library.
No, you won't have to log in and out of the Mac. (If I'm understanding your question here.) Multiple accounts can be logged in at the same time. And with fast user switching, you can toggle between user accounts.
I'll admit that maintaining the two libraries gets a little tricky, because if you share all the same music, you'll have to add it to one and update the other. (That won't happen automatically.) But I think Home Sharing makes this much easier to do.

Use Migration Assistant on your new Mac:
Click Continue:
On the next screen, choose your Time Machine backup disk.
Don't bother to migrate Applications unless you know they will work on your new Mac. For example, PowerPC applications won't work. Just migrate your user account which will copy all your photos, music, movies, and other documents.
Note: you will not be able to migrate the information to same account in which you are already logged in. Migration Assistant will tell you that and recommend what to do. It can migrate the information to a new account, but you will have to give it a name you might want to change later. One way around this is to create a temporary account, log in to it, and run Migration Assistant which will replace your normal account. Then, log out of the temporary account, log in to your usual one, verify everyting works as you expect, and delete the temporary one.
All this can be avoided when you set up a brand new Mac by running Setup Assistant which essentially does the same thing to create your new account, but most people are too excited to do that and elect to migrate later.

You can view the balance of your iTunes account : on my iPad it shows at the bottom of, for example, the Featured tab in the App Store app under my account id (or you can view your account via Settings > iTunes & App Store and it should show on the screen that you are taken to). If your balance is zero then it might not show.

You cannot redownload audiobooks at all. The audiobook industry does not allow this.
As always have been the case, you should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

then card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.
Have you tried entering card details to see if it is charged for the purchase (you may see a temporary store holding charge go on the card which your card issuer should remove within a few days or so) ? You should be able to remove card details after entering them.
