How should I have my RAM installed?

Hi,
Just bought some RAM for my Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz and the image below shows how i have them installed. Should i install the sticks in some different order in order to get the most out of the RAM.

  • How should I do a clean install?

I've been having problems since I got my Mini a few weeks ago, and I'm thinking that my use of Migration Assistant may have ported over some duff software.
If I do a clean install I hope to solve some of these issues.
Is there a recommended way to do this?
I plan to copy stuff onto an external disk first, but how should I 'wipe' the HD before starting the new install? Drag everything to the trash and empty it? Use Disk utility to write zero over everything?
Excuse the dumb questions but despite using Macs for years I've never had to do this before.
(Incidentally, the most annoying problems are very long logout times from user accounts and regularly experiencing frozen mouse when starting up from sleep.)

First off, there is no such thing as a "clean install". Mac OS X offers these installation options:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
You can't just trash the files. You can use the installer's options button to erase and install, or you can use the installer's Disk Utility to erase the hard drive. The latter though requires an extra reboot.
An erase and install will eliminate all but potential hardware issues.
The the problems with logging out may simply be a permissions issue and require no erase and install. Secondly, Migration Assistant typically will only cause problems if you have insufficient disk space, or your Mac you are migrating from is different in the CPU manufacturer. I.e. you can't do an Intel/PowerPC migration, but you can do an Intel/Intel or PowerPC/PowerPC. If you tried an Intel/PowerPC migration, an erase and install will certainly clear issues that were caused by that, but I'd also make sure before erase and installing to have at least two backups in place*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And try the migration this time using this article:

  • How should i upgrade my ram

i just got a macbook and it only has 1 gig of ram. im not worried about price, so where should i take it to get it upgraded? also, is 2gb my limit?

Those apps are pretty RAM intensive and I think that you will see a jump in performance if you go to 2GB.
One way to see your RAM needs is to open up the activity monitor and look under the "system memory" tab for the number of pageouts. That is the number of times that your RAM has "filled up" and had to write its contents to the HD. Obviously HD access is much slower than accessing the RAM, so that would lead to a slowdown.
The number of pageouts is cumulative since your last reboot, so do not be alarmed if the number is high, but rather if it is large compared to the number of pageins. My Mac has been on for almost 8 days now and I have 104721 pageins and only 1624 pageouts. I have not worked on anything at all for the last week, just browsed the web so those numbers are low, but the clearly show that I have enough RAM for the current usage.

  • Location of iPhone sync data files or How to not have to re-install all my iPhone apps?

    Hi Folks,
I recently did a clean install of Lion on my MacBook Pro and I've chosen to not use Migration Assistant because I don't want to move over a bunch of cruft under my 4+ year old home directory (Tiger > Leopard > SL).  I've been very selective about the things I've moved over and all has gone well until I want to sync my iPhone.  I've transferred purchases from the iPhone but if I check Sync Apps, iTunes wants to wipe and re-install everything!  This wouldn't be a problem, except the time it would take to re-organize all my apps on the iPhone again.   (Side note: Please Apple, give us an "auto-organize" button for apps!)
Any idea how to move over my old sync data files to avoid having to nuke/reinstall my iPhone's apps?  Or is there another option to preserve how my apps are organizated?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Rob

Right Click the iPhone and click Transfer Purchases and then do the backup and restore from backup... That will transfer all your applications over to your computer and then organize them properly in their folders...
OK, that does make sense so I won't bother setting it up as a new phone.
Quick follow up question though, do I need to click the Sync Apps check box before I do a restore?  The reason I ask is that I've done a transfer purchases/backup/restore cycle but all the tabs (Apps, Music, Movies, etc.) do not have the sync check box checked following the restore as I would expect.  And when I go check the Sync Apps check box that's when it warns me "Are you sure you want to sync apps?  All existing apps and their data on the iPhone will be replaced with apps from this iTunes library."  That's when the apps then become unorganized.
Thanks so much for your continued help!

  • Should I have to explicitly install CA certs that are already preinstalled in iOS?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to understand how iOS deals with certificates and I'm wondering if anyone can explain a few things to me. I'm working on a system that would provide users with a personal identification certificate for authentication to various services (email, Wi-Fi, websites, etc.) via a configuration profile. Profile creation isn't a problem, but in testing website authentication, it seems that iOS (or Mobile Safari) requires me to provide the CA certificates that should already be on the device.
Here is the certificate chain that my colleague provides me with when I get the user's cert:
    AddTrust External CA Root
    ↳ UTN-USERFirst-Client Authentication and Email
↳ InCommon Standard Assurance Client CA
           ↳ User's personal certificate
At first, I added the certificate as a single payload of type com.apple.security.pkcs12 with all the CA certificates in the chain included in the p12 data blob. This didn't seem to work since I'd get a warning from MobileSafari in the console log:
no itentities, but we have a challenge <NSURLAuthenticationChallenge: 0x1ddccd90>
Along with the following dialog in the browser:
    This website requires a certificate
The required certificate is not installed.
    Dismiss
    The server's ssl_error_log reported:
Re-negotiation handshake failed: Not accepted by client!?
So I tried breaking out the certs into individual payloads. According to this article, iOS 5 and 6 has "AddTrust External CA Root" and "UTN-USERFirst-Client Authentication and Email" preinstalled and I shouldn't have to install them again. So I just included "InCommon Standard Assurance Client CA" and the user's cert as two separate payloads (of types com.apple.security.pkcs1 and com.apple.security.pkcs12 respectively), but that didn't work. I was only able to get it to work if I installed the entire cert chain (using com.apple.security.root as the payload type for the root cert).
Why is that? Shouldn't it already know about the two CAs? I can understand adding the "InCommon" CA since it's not preinstalled, but It seems strange that I have to explicitly provide the other CA certs.
FWIW, I've found out that there are at least three versions of "UTN-USERFirst-Client Authentication and Email":
Intermediate CA (expires Saturday, May 30, 2020 6:48:38 AM EDT)
Intermediate CA (expires Sunday, December 31, 2028 6:59:59 PM EDT)
Root CA (expires Tuesday, July 9, 2019 1:36:58 PM EDT)
The root version is the one preinstalled in iOS. When I evaluate the user's cert with the Certificate Assistant in OS X, the cert status is good no matter what chain it uses, but could this multiple CA certs thing be an/the issue?

    Ariana...
so I assume there should be some track of them
    Yes.

  • Should I have erased and installed?

I recently bought my first Mac and brought it home and ran it for a few days before I realized that Tiger was preloaded and not Leopard. From what I have read, I must not have done an erase/install because I still have iWeb, iPhoto, etc. Would not doing the erase slow down my computer? It seems a little more sluggish.
2nd question: I am using parallels to run Windows XP for work. However, this morning I started up XP and my keyboard would not work. The computer froze all together on me at one point and I ended up turning it off and back on. The keyboard works fine in the Mac OS. Also, I have an external hard drive for backups - if I have this plugged in when I go to XP, it doesn't seem to want to work.
Thanks for any advice you can offer. Lee

If you did a "simple upgrade", all of the apps you originally had will still be there. If you are uncertain about your system performance and want to do an "Erase and Install" of 10.5, you will then have to extract any apps on the 10.4 disk using a program like "Pacifist". Or you can buy and install the latest release of iLife and/or iWork.
As to your issue with Parallels and windoze expee, you might want to post to the Parallels support forum. But there have been a lot of issues with windoze not seeing USB devices and, AFAIK, you need to use the latest release of Parallels (v3.xxx I believe) to run expee in 10.5.

As long as you have the serial number you should not have an issue installing and activating Lightroom when you finish the system reinstall.

I have a Macbook Model No A1181 2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo with 4 Gb Ram. Should I be able to instal Final Cut Pro 3.0.2 cos I'm having problems? As I read it My machine should be able to run the software.
    Thanks in advance

You are trying to use software that is over 10 years old. As I read it, FCP 3.0.2 required 10.1 or higher at the time, but as FCP is reliant on quicktime, which has been updated many, many times, I doubt that you will ever get it to work properly.

It all depends. You don't NEED anything, Firefox runs just fine with it's default setup, and you don't need to install anything to fully experience the best of the web. But lets say you don't like ads. Install Adblock plus. Lets say you want to change themes, there are dozens of them. It's all personal preference.

I have bought a new iPad mini. its not showing me Facetime Installed. How should I start a Facetime ?

Where did you buy it? facetime is barred from devices sold in some countries, due to the countries insisting upon it. UAE and other middle eastern countries are examples.
If you bought your iPad in a country that banns its use then you'll never have facetime on that device. It's locked out at the most basic level.

Have the program installed on only one computer.

Download the Adobe Licensing Repair Tool.
    Run the License Service Update.
Mac OS X 10.7 and above:
    a. Double-click the LicenseRecovery111.dmg   It will extract the folder. Open the folder.
    b. Double-click your Hard Drive.
    c. Double-click Applications.
    d. Double-click Utilities.
    e. Double-click Terminal.
    f. Type sudo python
Note: There is a space following “python”. Do not press Return.
    g. Drag LicenseRecover.py from the LicenseRecovery111 folder onto the Terminal Window and press Return.
    It should look like this:
    h. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted and click OK.
(Note: the cursor will not move and you will not see stars or dots, just enter your password anyway.
    i. Let the script run, it will tell you when it is finished. Quit terminal and restart Photoshop

  • So I have a (PC) laptop with 8gb of RAM and I'm running CC on it. I haven't set it up on this before so I'm wondering how much should I set the RAM usage to in performance so I can use it but not ruin this laptop?

I just don't know where specifically to put the RAM at in the preferences option.
I mainly use it for digital painting and sketching on this. (not so much painting on this but digital art)

8 GB is about the realistic minimum for Photoshop nowadays.
Set it to about 70% and go for there.  Note that it represents a maximum percentage of your momentarily available RAM after the OS and other running application have grabbed what they need., not a percentage of total installed RAM.  It changes continually.
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • How should i allocate the right RAM and disk space to windows through boot camp or parallels ?

i am trying to understand how you need to set things up when trying to run windows from a mac ( using bootcamp / parallels ). i want to understand the implications around RAM.
i have a mac with 1terra SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and if i want to install windows i need to partition and allocate memory and disk space for windows.
now i would be running on windows :
    cad 2015
    revit / rhino
photoshop and some other graphic softwares
    so my questions are:
how do i decide how much space should be allocated to windows and once i decide that, can i change it later ?
how do i decide what RAM should be allocated to windows. and can i also change that in the future ?
now lets say i allocated 8 GB of RAM for winddows using bootcamp, does that mean that every time i log into my mac through OS, it will only be using 8GB of the total RAM ?
here's my last question : i have my parallels software yet to be installed, just as the windows 8 software. now should i use bootcamp to install windows ? could i install windows using parallels ? if yes which is better to use ?

    1. Windows needs 60GB for good performance, add the needs of the apps you intend to use and I would say no less than 100GB. (it can be changed later but it is not an easy task unless you pay for Camp Tune)
    2. You do not allocate Ram to Windows in Boot Camp. Windows will use all of it (64bit Windows) or 4GB (32bit Windows)
    3. See 2
    4. Use Boot Camp, Parallels will not allow Windows to run at full speed.
    General Notes:
    1. Make a complete backup of your Mac before you start! (do not skip this)
    2. Read the Boot Camp directions, then read them again.
