How should I manage lots of MIDI loops?

Hello,
I just purchased GrooveMonkee MIDI drum loops, which gave me hundreds of MIDI drum loops.
I use the Mac's Finder to preview these MIDI loops. When I find the one I want, I drag it into the Arrange window of Logic Express.
However, Logic assigns the name "Sequence" to every loop, rather than the original file name. So then I get left with lots and lots of regions called "Sequence", and it's hard to know which was which.
Is there any way to change the name of a MIDI region after it is imported into Logic?
Would there be a better way for me to manage hundreds of MIDI loops like this? (apart from buying new software drum machines).
thanx

Yes, it is part of Arch philosophy. Unfortunately
I'm probably trying to say 2 things: this is the only thing I personally don't like about Arch, and the packages could do with a little bit more testing. I mean, do you really need the newest packages the very next day ??

  • How do you turn third-party midi loops into Apple Loops?

Does anyone know how to turn third-party midi loops into Apple Loops? I've got hundreds of short midi files that I purchased, and I would like to be able to use them in the loop browser of Logic Studio. I tried some of the obvious ways of doing this, like using Apple Loop Utility, but it doesn't seem to recognize .mid files. Seems like .mid files would be right up its alley, so maybe I'm doing something wrong...

Yes, have the same problem but with wav loops. i have 75000 wav loops from third part and do not find how to "logicized" it. For the moment i can use them into a project but they are not adapting when i change the bpm of the projetc for exemple.
If you know the solution i would be rescued

  • How do I manage my storage?

I have been mulling this over, especially since I lost some projects when I sold my iMac and upgraded to a new MBP. Here is as consise an overview as I can summize -
I have a MBP with 256 SSD running Logic Pro 9, Reason 6.5 and several plugins such as Camel Audio Alchemy - this SSD is almost full. I Time Machine back up to the 7200rpm 500GB which was replaced by the SSD - this external drive is almost full. I have an additional 1TB 7200rpm drive partitioned into 3; a 135GB (56GB free) back up of my very old G4 (much of which is probably not worth keeping); a 775GB (516GBfree) archive which includes my iMac Time Machine back up (the last back up failed before I safe erased the hard drive prior to selling, probably because I stopped it before it had finished); and a 90GB (60GB free) partition I created thinking I would use this partition for 3rd party loops and samples.
I am sure the performance of my SSD is already affected by the amount of data on this drive even though I have only been creating new projects on this and sometimes copying old projects onto the SSD to continue reworking etc... and so my issue/query is thus, how do I manage this data/storage?
Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
I feel like I need an IT department but I'm just a one man band!
Any advice or support would be very welcome and gratefully received.
    cheers
    Andy

I have had many of the same issues / dilemmas. Here is my opiniion for what it's worth:
ANDY - Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
    Yes.
ANDY - I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Yes, I would try and keep them all on one drive
ANDY - Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
What type of presets? I would keep these all together on the system drive as they should be quite small?
ANDY - Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Yes, kind of. I would have a separate drive for all 3rd party samples and sound libraries.
ANDY - Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
Maybe. Remember that however big a drive you have, you need to have another one at least as big to back everything up on to. Using time machine in any other way is a real pain.
So, if it's any help, how I use manage my storage currently is this:
1 x Macbook Pro with 500GB SSD - This contains all the applications and system data as well as any files I need to take with me if I go anywhere and don't take the external drives (certain MP3s for DJing). All the Logic 'Additional Content' is also on here, but I may need to move that soon (or delete it if I never use it)
1 x USB3.0 bus powered 2TB WD portable hard drive - This contains all the sound libraries / samples that I need to be loaded quickly. Currently 928GB in total.
1 x USB2.0 2TB WD external hard drive. This contains all data that doesn't need to be accessed regularly or very quickly (Unused applications, photos, videos, video tutorials, archive of MP3s not used anymore for DJing, and various backups of the internal SSD driver
Then I would have a 4TB time machine backup external drive - if a WD elements one was available - at the moment they only go to 3TB, so I currently split the backup over 2 other drives manually.
I also keep my current logic projects (for the current year) on the internal SSD for very quick loading. At the end of the year I move all the old ones I've finished with to the USB2 external drive.

Yes, archiving is an option to manage huge data. However there are some best practices available to manage huge content. Proper planning and structure will provide the best results. Term Store, Taxonomy and Metadata tagging will help to have structure

    Jonas,
I think what you want is a 3D plot of a cylinder. I have attached an example using a parametric 3D plot.
You will probably want to duplicate the points for the first theta value to close the cylinder. I'm not sure what properties of the graph can be manipulated to make it easier to see.

should I set up a different apple account for each child?  if so, how do I manage itunes money between two kids?

    Hello staatsfamily,
Having a separate Apple ID for each child will allow each child to keep their purchases and iCloud information separate.  It will also allow you to provide an iTunes Store Allowance for each child:
With iTunes Allowance, you can send a monthly iTunes Store credit to anyone with an iTunes Store account. It's a great way for parents to manage their children's spending on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store.
Once you have created an Apple ID for each child, you can provide an iTunes Store allowance to each Apple ID. The following article will guide you in how to set this up:
    iTunes Store Allowance

  • How should I go about doing this exercise (networking/database related)

    Hey everyone
As a learning exercise for myself, I've decided to write a basic web based chat room application. I'm going to:
-allow users to create an account (store this info in a database)
-force users to log in before entering a lobby (there will be multiple lobbies)
-have users join a lobby, and then select one chatroom to join in that lobby
-allow multiple users in each lobby and chatroom
It is also going to be web based, so I want a user to be able to open a web page and then use the application without having to download/install it.
My question is: How should I begin this project? As I can see it, I have a bunch of options, including using an applet or using java web start. What are my other options (if any)? What are the advantages/disadvantages of these options, and which would you use if you were creating a chatroom for a website that had hired you?
    Thanks for your help

You've made a decent start by identifying some of the major functions that your chat room will support. You'll probably need to expand on it, and also determine the exact information requirements for those modules (For example: what will an account look like? What data will it hold? How will it interact with the other modules/classes in the chat room? What does your Lobby need to do?).
I'm not an expert in web-based programming, but there are a few "unversals" to good design that might help (and provide you with some things to Google). It's probably going to sound like CD-101, but here goes:
    1. Pick a good development platform - You could do this with Notepad; but I don't advise it. You're going to have to manage a lot of complexity, and IDEs are the way to go. I don't want to start a war here, but both NetBeans and Eclipse have the tools for this sort of project - and they're free.
    2. Think what+, not how+ - ...at least to begin with :-). This is probably the hardest thing for newbies to learn, because they're just dying to get started on the code. Decide what you want to do before you dive into the how. You may find you change your mind about the how before you come to code. You may also find that somebody's already written a piece of code or library to do just what you want. As a very simple example: sendMessage() is a 'what' method; openSocket() is the 'how'.
    3. Loose coupling - as far as possible, keep your methods and classes self-contained and well-focused. This general principle also applies to system components - try to make sure that each one is well-defined and "talks" to other components in a well specified manner. There are several design patterns for the type of thing you want to do, but you might want to start with MVC (Model/View/Control). It'll also help you when you want to test (see below).
    4. Good naming - '*i*' may be a perfectly good name in a 'for' loop, but it's pretty useless outside it. Make your variable and method names mean something. There are also several conventions that other Java programmers expect, so you might want to [start here.|http://java.sun.com/docs/codeconv/]
    4. Think big, but start small - For example, a good 'test of concept' might be to get your chat room running on your local machine using a local database first. Providing you're using all the middleware you'll be using for your 'finished' version (eg, Tomcat), porting to the Internet shouldn't be too onorous (but it's unlikely to be completely glitch-free).
    5. Test, test, test - Test everything you do. It sounds boring, but good testing can actually highlight design problems. Find out a bit about it (eg, smoke tests, boundary checks) and try and find a tool that fits your needs. [This page|http://java-source.net/open-source/web-testing-tools] has a few suggestions.
    6. Document - Another snorer, but vital. javadoc is your friend, but you'll probably want other forms of documentation as well. UML wouldn't be a bad place to start.
    7. And finally, read - there's a lot to know about this stuff, and it's changing all the time. Here's a few pointers to get you going:
    - Database comms/Persistence/Model - JPA, Hibernate, JDBC.
    - Databases - MySQL, Derby, Oracle, DB2, SQLServer; also some [others here.|http://java-source.net/open-source/database-engines]
    - View - JSP, Struts, Ajax, Swing (non-web)
    - Control - Servlets, EJB, Tomcat, Jetty
    - Testing - JUnit
    - Communication/Messaging - JMS, SOAP
    - Other: ant, jar, war, ear, xml
If you have any mates in the biz, you might want to talk to them too. An ounce of experience is worth a pound of heartache.

  • Midi loops in browser sound different in arrange window controller messages

I have a problem with controller messages as well with fx
I audition a midi loop it has FX and then drag it to arrange window
sounds different, I know of ther is another topic about the FX,
But as well controller messages not being read right
say a Timpani loop, foot controller is not reading
so the timpani roll is gone

This is not a problem, it's intentional design.
The preview audio contains reverb for these instruments, because the sound is in context - it let's you hear it how you are typically going to use it, and use can use it as an audio loop without problems.
When you load it as MIDI, it does not add another reverb to the channel because it assume you are going to use a global reverb, rather than add individual reverbs per channel - this is the generally better way of doing it, and avoids new users having a hundred reverbs on individual channels when they only need one.
As for articulations switched by MIDI, the preview audio can contain only one sample, but if there are different articulations, they need to be played/switched accordingly.
It's not a bug, it's the way it works for flexibility in the main. You have to remember, that when stepping up from a entry-level program to a professional one, a lot of hand-holding that the entry level programs do is no longer there, and so you can feel like the pro version is "less good" than the entry one. This is not the case - professional users do not need hand-holding, and that generally gets in the way.

  • MIDI Loops sound different in preview

I'm a new user to Logic, and I'm confused about the green (MIDI) loops. When I preview one it sounds one way, but will sound different when I drag it to my arrangement, even when having it create a new track. On many of them it sounds like it's just missing some reverb, but the change is more drastic in others, eg. "Desire A Cellos", where it sounds like the wrong samples have been loaded.
Also I noticed that it loads instruments like "strings" and "piano" where I would expect it to be using the more sophisticated EXS sampler.
    Is this normal?
If I listen to a loops like "Concert Hall Piano 4" it sounds way more realistic in the preview than it does when I let it play the MIDI in my track. My first thought is that this must be because the "Piano" instrument doesn't know how to handle the extra midi data such as expression.
Is anyone else having this problem, and what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks,
    -Emil

To answer this question, loops are created to be used with Garageband, so all of the instruments selected will use Garageband instruments.
The other more important question....I DON'T KNOW! Great question, I'm having the same issue with mine. I hope someone can shed some light on this. If you double click the 'strings' instrument in the channelstrip where you have your 'Desire A Cellos' and select the 'Cellos Pizzicato' preset instead of the 'Cellos' preset that is selected, you get much closer. It seems like it has defaulted to the wrong setting. Your right though, there's definitely some verb there too. And also, if you then change your song key, the loop in the arrange window should change with it, but mine is not.
HOWEVER....If you drag a GREEN loop into an audio channel instead of a MIDI channel, it will create an audio file loop (like the blue loops). As far as I can tell, they sound exactly as they should, and they do change keys. Still though, very strange. Perhaps tis a bug??

  • Does anyone use MIDI loops in Logic Pro to compose music?

Seriously, if anyone out there uses the MIDI loops to compose music in Logic, how the heck do you do it? Especially if you are also using audio loops, it seems almost impossible to me. The chord transpositions that you get from the chord track are not even to the right pitch, and the transposition behavior is different according to whether you drag the loops into the arrange area before or after putting the changes in the Chord track. The signature track is no better, as it doesn't seem to affect audio loops. So how do you get the bass loops etc. to play in the keys you want them to without going through extraordinary contortions? I looked at one of the Logic Pro books, and it said to transpose by using the transpose function in the inspector, but that only lets you transpose by octaves! Do you really go in and edit the loops by hand to transpose each note?
Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated.

Put the mouse pointer on top of the transpose number, which is zero, hold down the left mouse button and drag up or down to transpose by steps. At the beginning of either the getting started or Logic manual there's an explanation of the different types of mouse/key behavior, if you're not used to using Logic it's a good idea to go over these.
Also, Logic does not always use simplified Mac conventions (thank the stars for that), as a result you have a lot more variety of data input, it varies according to the task at hand.

I want to keep it SIMPLE. I don't want to hassle with programming drum sequences.
This is what I want to do, take GENERAL MIDI loops from actual live drum performances into Logic Express 8, use them to trigger hi resolution acoustic drum samples in Ultrabeat to create natural, REAL sounding drum tracks at 24 bit/96 resolution. Here is an example of the type of 3rd party midi loops I would like to use:

Is this possible and easy to do in Logic Express 8/ultrabeat and how do I do this?

  • Converting existing MIDI loops

    Hi,
I have a bunch of previously acquired and used MIDI loops, which I should like to import and use in GarageBand. When double-clicked, the MIDI loops open in QuickTime, with which I can export to an AIF file - but these are full-lenth, 3-4 minute long AIF sound files repeating the 5-10 second loop over and over.
How can I reliably extract a single cycle to save as an AIF file and import to GarageBand? Preferably, as I have a boatload of these, I am looking for a utility/script that can do this in batch mode...
    Thanks, Tristan
    G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
...well, that didn't work either: dragging those files over onto the track portion of the window (either an existing instrument or the empty area) did not turn the cursor into "+"; upon releasing, the files would jump back to the Finder window.
That got me thinking, that perhaps these were somehow not proper MIDI files (they came from a cross-platform program). Upon opening one of them with QuickTime, I exported it as "Music to Standard MIDI", and that file indeed can be dropped into the track, and creates its "Software instrument" and the full repetitive track. The created file has the type "Midi", creator "????" and UTI "dyn.ah62d4rv4ge8044pe"; and, just changing the type of the original file from "MooV" to "Midi" doesn't make it work.
From this, I can now indeed cut down to a desired cycle, and save that in GB's library. So, I now do have a method for importing these files:
    (1) Open in QuickTime & export as standard MIDI file.
    (2) Drag to GB's track, cut and save the result.
    (3) Tweak the velocity information, since the setting obtained is disproportionate: the sounds of lesser volume are barely audible.
    (4) Repeat. ...great...
Well, that answers my original question; thanks for insisting that GB should be able to use the (standard) MIDI files.
    Thanks, Tristan

how to read that internal table in loop.

    Hi Deepthi,
You can do as per below:
    1) Select the required entries from the tables you need (VBAK, VBAP, KNA1, etc)
    SELECT VBELN ERDAT KUNNR
        into table it_vbak
        from VBAK
where VBELN = S_VBELN. "Selection criteria
    If sy-subrc = 0.
    SELECT VBELN POSNR MATNR
        into table it_vbap
        from VBAP
    for all entries in it_vbak
    where VBELN = it_vbak-vbeln
    SELECT KUNNR NAME1
        into table it_vbak
        from VBAK
    where VBELN = it_vbak-vbeln.
    endif.
    2) Loop at the entries, and read internal table it-kna1 for customer info.
    Loop at it_vbak into wa_vbak.
read table it_kna1 into wa_kna1 with key kunnr = wa_vbak-kunnr.
    if sy-subrc = 0.
    endif.
    loop at it_vbap into wa_vbap where vbeln = wa_vbak-vbeln.
    endloop.
    endloop.
This is the basic idea and short example of how to extract entries and read internal table.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to go on creating activities in loop?

    Hi!
Lead record type has activities associated with it.
if a new lead is created, automatically an initial activity should be created with certain details and assigned to a particular sales rep. this i can do with workflow. this is fine.
Now i want that, when ever the sales rep completes the activity and marks status of activity as _"Completed"_, automatically a new activity record should be created and details of newly created activity should be filled by the sales rep who marked the old activity status as "Completed". This cycle should go on.
Also there has to be a stopper to this loop to which only a manager can have access.
i tried with workflow. For that i created a custom picklist on activity record type with values as "Continue" and "Stop". I set the default value as "Continue". Only manger has access to this picklist. My logic was unless the manager sets the value of the picklist as "Stop", the activity should be created in loop. I did in this way:
    Workflow Name: Activity Loop
    record Type: Activity
Trigger Event: When modified record saved
Workflow rule condition: LookupValue("OCC_INDEX_CUST_LOV_EVT_ACT_0", "Continue") AND LookupValue("EVENT_STATUS", "Completed")
But when i saw the available Workflow actions, there was no mention of creating a new activity in it. so now how should i create new activity when old activity is completed? i am struck up here. How can continue from this point?
I don't mind going for any other way if it satisfies my requirement.
    thankx and regards

    Hi !
I'm afraid this won't be possible with workflows... Oracle made it not possible to create an activity via a workflow on the activity entity.
Imagine that someone create something like "when a new activity is created, then create an activity", you'll agree that this will shut down the server !! I think that's why they don't allow this action on this kind of workflow.
I'll suggest to have a checkbox on your lead record which will be something like "Next activity" and when the sales rep checks it, it will create the next activity and uncheck the box.
Otherwise, try to fin out if this kind of functionnality will be possible in the next release (R16)...
Hope this will help, feel free to ask more !
