How Smart Groups in Contacts transfer to the iCloud

I have Smart Groups in Contacts on my Mac. When I try to send emails from my iPad, it will recognize that certain people belong to a group, but it won't recognize the group name as a valid email address. How do I fix this?

Basically, use Smart Groups on your Mac to create dynamic subsets of your contacts. Copy all of the contacts in that group (command-A) to a [regular / static / dumb] group. You can rename that group to whatever you want (including the same name as the smart group). A bit of a pain, but if the contacts in your smart group don't change that much, you shouldn't have to update your [regular / statis/ dumb] group very often... such as for my "family" group.
Also, you can then "prune" the [regular / static / dumb] group of contacts that your smart group rules included, but shouldn't be in the group, when you update it. I do this monthly for my "travel" group.

  • Since updating to Mavericks I can't use the smart groups in Contacts to send emails.  How do I fix this?

Since updating to OSX Mavericks I can't use the smart groups in Contacts to address emails. This was not a problem previously.  How do I get the functionality of smart groups restored?

I discovered this problem this morning after upgarding to Mavericks.
I've found an easy answer: Apple have changed the way it confirms the addition of Groups it seems.
Type the name of the group in the Cc: or Bcc: field, hit the Space bar, then hit Enter. Vavoom!!
    Hope this helps.

  • Synching smart groups in contacts

I've just created a lot of smart groups in contacts - very happy with the results with one exception: when I go to my other macs/ IOS devices that use the same iCloud ac/ sign in ... the smart groups aren't there.  I'm using Yosemite 10.10.1 and IOS 8.1.2.
Smart folders in Mail work flawlessly.  When I create the rules in mail on one mac, they appear in Mail on all my other macs (I have 4 macs in the house).  So how do I get my smart groups in contacts to replicate across devices?   Do I have to setup and replicate all the rules on each mac manually?  ... there must be a simpler way.
Any help or pointers appreciated.  Thanks

  • How do I manage multiple devices on the iCloud

How do I manage multiple devices on the icloud.  We have 2 ipods, 2 iphones, ipad and a mac and right now the icloud thinks my son has my phone.

Try going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>My Info (in the Contacts section), then select your contact from the list.

  • Not all data on contact syncs to the iCloud

I have many notes within my contacts in my address book. Since upgrading to icloud, only some of the data within the notes field is syncing. The worst part is, since it syncs half the information to the cloud and then syncs the incomplete contact card back to my mac it permanently erases the data!
Has anyone noticed this problem? Does it seem possible that I have identified the issue correctly?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I assume you mean sync, not backup.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

Could you tell us a little more about what you want to do. Bear in mind that iTunes has nothing to do with your iCloud account.

You can't, if the photos are in photostream you need a compatible device, if they are in a backup, you can only use the backup to restore to a new device.

    Hi jordanpaulbrown,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact configuration you are currently using/describing. If you are talking about My Photo Stream, you should be aware that it only stores stores photos for 30 days in order to allow for other device to connect and download the photos. If you would like to keep them long term off of your iPhone, you may want to set up your computer (Mac or Windows) to automatically download them. You may find the following article helpful:

Hi! how can I delete a book from the iCloud? I bought the wrong book ... is for adults and I have kids...so

The most comprehensive delete method I know about is to delete the book from iTunes on the computer you sync your iPad with.  You'll be asked if you're sure, and it will be deleted from your iPad and any other i-Device you sync to.
I think that's the best you can do.

  • How can I delete tv shows from the iCloud on my Apple TV?

I recently purchased Apple TV (3rd gen) and need to delete a tv show that appears there.  There's no trash can icon on the screen as some posts state--just an iCloud icon.  How do I delete an item from the iCloud so it will no longer appear on the Apple TV?

You can't hide it AFAIK on AppleTV - do it via iTunes.
In iTunes elect the store home page, and choose Purchases in teh QuickLinks on the right.
Choose TV Shows and hover over the one to hide and there should be a small x to hide it.
If you need it back go into your actual account settings in iTunes and choose to unhide there.

  • How do I recover Apps Data from the iCloud on iPhone 4S with IOS 6.1?

How do I recover Apps Data from the iCloud on iPhone 4S with IOS 6.1?

You would have to restore to your entire iCloud backup, if you have one.  (The backup includes app data.)  Restoring to an iCloud backup has to be done in the initial setup process.  If you have any data on your phone now that is not in the backup that you want to save you'll need to do that first.  Then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  You will then go through the setup screens as you did when the phone was new. When given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.  Be sure you are connected to wifi and your charger as this will take some time to finish.
