How Sorry Will I Be: iMac + FCP?

I have a late '08 iMac 2.8 G Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs RAM. I have just swallowed hard and got FCP to process my underwater video.
How sorry will I be that I plan to use FC Studio 3 on my 3-year old iMac?
I am not a video professional. This is a hobby for me. Having done a few fairly complicated projects in iMovie HD, I guess I'd say I'm an intermediate beginner.
I can probably live with a little frustration in waiting for stuff to render. I know there are newer, much faster machines out there. It might even be time to consider one. The iMac has no expandability to speak of and a comparatively slow ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics processor.
Am I nuts for both trying to beat down the FCP learning curve on this old, comparatively slow machine?
BTW, I just got an external 2TB HD to be connected via FW800 for my projects. I'm hoping that will help some.
Any advice to this newbie would be appreciated.

This discussion is all relative and the biggest factor is not your hardware but your willingness to work within the confines of FCP and not force it do what you think it should be doing.

I don't believe it's that old or slow at all that's not what you should be concerned about.
What type of video are you going to be working with and how are you going to output?
Will you be working with H.264 and can't be bothered with transcoding and you need to author a Bluray disc with customizable menus? Then FCP ain't for you.
Every single day some "filmmaker" barges into the Apple forums rampaging about, complaining how they need to render everything and their brand spanking new 63 core machine is slow slow slow and they can't be bothered to learn how Final Cut Pro works with video, sequences, storage and video codecs. I actually hope these people keep coming as it makes for humorous reading.
So, you're not nuts at all for using your iMac with FCP because it will work well provided you work within the confines of the application. You've also noted the video card and the iMac's lack of expansion so just be aware that Motion is GPU dependent and complicated projects will take some time to render.
BTW, I just got an external 2TB HD to be connected via FW800 for my projects. I'm hoping that will help some.
A multiple drive FW800 raid would be better, depending upon your source video.

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

It's always a good idea to check the requirements before purchasing.
The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

    Hi
My Powerbook was the same. Only fix is to reinstall OSX from the install CD but be sure not to pick the Format and install clean. Once you boot with the install CD pick the preserve user data and settings.
On My machine the reinstall looked perfect. My network, email, files and all the programmes were all there. Most apps worked fine but Adobe CS2, Virtual PC and NetBarrier all needed reinastallation as they reported a few files or registration was missing. I went for the 10.4.3 upgrade again and it worked fine.
    Good luck

  • I just got one of the new iMac.  following the on screen instructions to do migration assist.  I guess it connected via wifi to my old iMac.  now it seems to have stopped.  what can I do to not mess it all up?  how long will it take on wifi?

I just got a new iMac.  was following the onscreen instructions to do migration assistance and I guess it connected to my old iMac via wi fi. It never instructed me to connect via firewire.  Now it seems to have stopped.  what can I do that won't completely mess it up?  how Long will it take to do over wi fi?

Your new iMac does not have a Firewire port so you ned this adapter:

to connect the two machines together and migrate simply follow the instructions in:

  • HT4500 How long will it take to transfer 400gb from time capsule to my iMac using mountain lion

I did a clean install on my iMac. Now I cannot access my backups. I can see the time capsule, but when I open time machine, I only have today  which is the newly installed system. I am now trying to use migration assistant to grab my files. I got to where I choose my time machine and entered my password. Now I don't see any action. How long will the transfer take?  My 500 gb time capsule is full. Should I be seeing something on my screen.

This depends on what the connection type is for the computer to the Time Capsule - wireless or Ethernet, how much data are involved, what generation of Time Capsule, and whether the transfers are to an HDD or SSD.

  • How long will the new 2011 imacs last?

Based on older imacs and types of precoessors how long would a new imac be expected to last

Also depends on what you mean. Do you mean physically last or remain functionally viable? Old Macs from the '80s are still ticking along, look on eBay.
While all manufactured products are subject to being lemons, I think it's far more likely that your machine will become "functionally obsolete" before it dies. My late-2004 iMac G5 (2GB RAM) is just now starting to show its age since some developers are starting to drop PowerPC support, but other than that it works like the day it was new.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

    SoCal thanks for the attention,
sorry for having wrote the question directly in the subject, but first i wrote it by text edit then copied it, but in the wrong place too.....
coming to my question, timeline settings are:
as it is a commercial promo that must be projected in a multiplex cinema, the 2K format is needed.
I've heard about transcoding services, and they are very expensive.
so i'm looking if there is a way to do everything by fcp.
the project will be delivered as SD DVD for archive pourposes and as a single file for the projection or eventually transconding.
p.s.: sorry for my english, i'm from italy: had my last english lesson 35 years ago!

  • How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

You need to find out what video out you have on your iMac, and what kind of video inputs there are on your TV.
It will help to know exactly what model iMac and exactly what make/model TV you have.
Depending on the exact model iMac you have, it may have miniVGA, miniDVI, miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output.  Your TV may have composite, S-video, component, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs.  Once you confirm what kind of ports your iMac and TV have, then we can probably suggest the correct cable or adapter so you can connect them to each other.

Open Applications and the the Utility folder and then Keychain Access app. In there you will find all the usernames and password that have been saved. For some reason it is not saving those passwords and or not using the ones that have been saved.
This is fairly common with Mac OS X as it happens for no apparent reason just all of a sudden.

Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.
    MacBook Pro:

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

Sorry, but that's Windows only malware, so unless you are having Windows issues, it's not going to solve your problem, whatever it is.
I got this from an email and I changed my email password, but it surfaced again
    before I did this scan.
Be careful how you deal with infected e-mails as you can easily corrupt the mailbox index and cause a few other issues, including leaving that e-mail on the server.  Always delete e-mails from within your e-mail client.

  • How do I access my iMac remotely when working away from the office?

I work away from the office for much of the time.  How can I access my iMac remotely?

Unless this is critcal for some reason I would not do this.  Unless you understand all the techinolticcal pit falls you can leave your computer dangerusly exposed doing this.  If you are not technical your best bet is going to be to get a wireless router with built in VPN support ($200 - $500) to give you a secure connection home.  And then you will need the Apple Remote Desktop app ($90 I think) and even then it will only work if your work compute is also a Mac.  There are probably other comerial apps that will let you remote into your Mac desktop on windows but will probably be in the $200 price range.

  • HT1338 how can i upgrade my iMAC OS X 10.4.8 version to 10.7 ? Not so computer literate

How can i updgrade my iMAC OS X 10.4.8 version to 10.7 ?? I'm not so computer literate but my computer is considered old and it is in desperate need of the latest upgrade. Also, how much is the cost for upgrade?  Many thanks to you Apple folks...

    You don't require Leopard.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
