How stable is Firefox 3 on the intel iMac ?

OK, the new iMac has arrived to replace the G4 that died !
My wife likes Firefox as a browser rather than Safari but how stable is Firefox 3 on the intel iMac, as my older macbook did not like it and I reverted back to Firefox 2 ?
Cheers

There are no issues whatsoever with Firefox on the new Intel iMac. I have had mine about a year without one issue... in fact... I have had Safari freeze up twice and never any issue with Firefox. That was one of the first apps I loaded when I got mine.
Enjoy!!!
Cheers,
Ronnie

  • How Do The Intel iMacs Handle HandBrake?

I've currently got a G4 1.33ghz Powerbook, and while I love it, it doesn't seem to have the power I need for harder stuff, like running HandBrake. I've been thinking of getting an iMac because a newer desktop ought to be a lot faster than what I have now. And I know that a new Universal version of HandBrake has just come out, so no more Rosetta.
My question is: how much of a performance increase would I see moving up from my Powerbook to a new Intel iMac when using HandBrake? Would it be a substantial one?
And anyone who has an Intel iMac and has/had an older G4 Powerbook, I'd love to hear your comments on the difference of perfomance.
    1.33 GHz 12" PowerBook G4 1.25GB ram "ANTIGEN" | iPod Photo 60 GB "ENZYME"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have no expeience with PPC macs as the intel iMac is my first Apple.
I must say the whole process of ripping DVDs with Handbrake is much easier. No more multi-step processes and much faster. My "old" PC was a 3G P4 with 1G RAM and it was not as fast as the iMac.
I have already ripped all my daughters movies onto the machine and can call them up at will with front row. Given she changes her mind every half an hour this is a God send

  • Do these programs run on the Intel Imacs

I wanna get the intel imacs, but i just wanna know if these programs will work on them.
-Photoshop cs2 or the entire creative suite
    -Dreamweaver
    -Micorsoft office suite
    -Flash 8
    -Firefox

There's a special Flash plug-in supplied with the Intel-Macs because the distribution version of Flash is not Intel-Mac compatible. The other programs will all run via Rosetta. There is a universal-binary version of Firefox (it's not the standard Firefox distribution, rather a Deer Park variant.)
Read my user tip on migrating:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers. These versions are not universal binaries and will not work on Intel-Macs. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the only current choice is USB Overdrive. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (does not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Should I Updrade to the Intel iMac?

My dad is thinking about upgrading to an Intel iMac. All he'll use it for is word processing and e-mail. From those that have one, how good are they? Any problems? Also, my dad did all his writing in Appleworks 6. Is That installed on the Intel iMac?

Actually, AppleWorks isn't a universal binary, and although it runs okay for me, it's awaful slow. Instead of purchasing it for $79, you could just get iWork '06 for $20 more. Pages, although the interface is different from AppleWorks's, is a good word processor, and doesn't take too long to get used to.
Or, as an alternative, you could use TextEdit. Not really.....

  • What usb keyboards are compatible with the Intel iMac

Please can someone tell me what USB Apple Keybouards are compatable with the intel Imac
    howard

Some PC keyboards may not work with the Mac. Especially, specialty gaming keyboards will not work with Macs and OS X.  Some PC keyboards are designed to specifically work with newer versions of Windows at that's it!
They may not even work as a basic keyboard, but not entirely sure.
I know for a fact specialty gaming keyboards do not work at all on a Mac because there have been posts here from gamers who tried to use special gaming keyboards and mice and they would not function on a Mac.
If you know anyone with a Mac, ask them if they have a spare Mac keyboard you can try before buying.
    Good Luck!

  • How to update firefox to the old version

How to update firefox to the old version? currently I am using 24 version and i want to update it to old version 17. please suggest me.

    Hi,
Is there a reason why you want to downgrade from a lower version to an even lower version? You can do the downgrade yourself but I won't tell you where to get the link to it as I'd be telling you to go back to a old and unsupported version of Firefox and also because the link is easily searchable.
Feel free to use the old unsupported and insecure versions of Firefox. Please however remember that puts your System and personal data at an increased risk. You may then wish to mitigate that by having well rehearsed bare metal restore strategies or using a virtual machine.

  • Does the Intel iMac accept the smaller DVD/CD's that often come as software

I cannot find anywhere any info if the Intel iMac's slot loading drive will accept the smaller type of CD/DVD's. I received one of these as a software install CD to transfer data from an LG cell phone vis USB cable.
    Thanks

Those discs would probably only contain Windows software anyways. The manufacturer would not put Mac OS X software on a disc that most current Mac could not read.
Instead, download the latest version of the software from the manufacturer's web site. I always do that myself, even if the included disc is regular size, because software on those discs is often an older version.

  • What spec PC's are the intel imacs equal to?

Ive looked all over online for some sort of comparison table but cant find anything...
Just wondering what sort of PC spec the intel imacs are equivelent to?

There is no chart to look at anymore as they use the same CPUs now. A Core Duo T2300 is a Core Duo T2300 processor, no matter what OS it is running.
Match the CPU in the two systems you are comparing and you will have a basic idea of, well nothing since they would be essentially the same computer.
Tiger is the difference now, and it is a huge difference.

  • A few Questions about the intel iMac

    Hello,
I have just ordered the 1.83ghz 17" intel imac.
I have bought the imac to replace my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 as its getting tired and falling apart now (nearly 3 years old) no apple care on it
I Have upgraded it with 2gb Ram.
My question is, i use the desktop mac i have for music using Logic Pro 7 and GarageBand, i have found GarageBand to be slow on my PowerMac G5 would the intel IMac be man/women (not trying to be sexest) for the job?
ie would it be the same power / more powerful than my G5?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Stuart
Ps Sorry if this has been asked about 1000 times, i did do a search and couldn't find the answers i was looking for, but if there is a thread about it please could you be kind enough to reply with the link.

Out of my personal experience, In School I use the Dual 2.0 GHZ G5 with 1GB of ram and I am using at home the 17inch 1.83 Intel iMac with 1GB or ram as well and seeing a big render difference with the iMac compared to the Dual G5. The only thing that ***** but will be solved soon is using non-universal software yet. Rosetta works and you get the job done but you dont see a speed difference using the power PC apps. Anything Universal is really really fast and I am satisfied with the increase of performance.

  • How to uninstall an app on intel imac

i would like to uninstall google chrome on my intel imac.
    how do i do that?
    thanks

Drag the application to the Trash, then Empty the Trash.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

  • About the extended desktop on the Intel iMac?

Hi I was looking into getting the 17" Intel iMac, but after looking at the 20" G5 iMac, I think I want the 20" Intel iMac. I wanted to know what size external display can you use with the 17" & 20" Intel iMac as a extended desktop? I was told the reason that I only can use up to 20" external display with my 12" PowerBook was the graphics card in it. I think you can get 128 MB and 256 MB with a Intel iMac? what size display can I use with this type of card?
I want to put a 23" or a 26" LCD TV on the 20" Intel iMac if you can? Hoping to use a 26", but 23" is OK too.
Thank you for all your help!
    12" PowerBook G4 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Thank you for yor help.
I have one more question to ask? If I use the LCD TV like Sony or Samsung with the New i-Mac will I loose deskspace on the LCD TV due to the low resolution on the LCD TV? I thought the LCD TV was a good idea since it has all the input for all my DVD player, TV box?, Nintendo, and the VHS?, but I was told that LCD TV might not be too compatible for use with a computer.
How do I put all my stuff on a Apple 23" LCD display I only can find adapters that can only take one peripheral at a time, and I don't want to re plug a TV box each time I want to watch TV. It looks like I need a box for use with Apple display with 3~4 input and S video, and HDMI input for the HD stuff?
Again thank you for all your help.

  • Scratch prone surface of the intel imac - Cheap quality?

My intel imac went dead after just 2 months of use. I guess the hard drive is gone. I took it to Compusa to have their Apple tech look at it. The lady there kept it on the desk on it's face to find the serial number and there they go....all scratches on the screen. I was SO mad and frustrated. Is there a way to remove these scratches? If not, can I claim for a replacement? I had the same problem on ipod video and before I could say anything to her, she had already done the damage. The imac surface is extremely scratch prone. Why did Apple make products SO delicate? Please be VERY gentle and careful with your imacs.

    Hello,
You made my day!! I told Compusa guy about this and
he is looking into getting the plastic thing
That's wonderful. Let me know how it works out. I'm sure they should be able to get the part for you.
replaced. If I didn't know that it could replaced, I
wouldn't be able to fight for it. Thanks SO much!!
    You're quite welcome
    Do I get a star
In all seriousness though, I'm glad to help, and happy to have been able to help you put some pressure on them.
With products like these (especially their high prices), there is no reason that we should settle for getting our equipment back with damage.
When you take a computer to the shop, it should come back looking just like it went in (or better).
I used to own a computer production and repair shop. I used to build and sell very high-end PC's and repair other systems.
When a computer came in for servicing, I'd fix it's problem and repair all the repairable cosmetic issues that it had when it arrived.
I repaired the cosmetic issues for free, and without being asked or asking to do it. I just wanted to make sure my customers knew that their machine had been given the royal treatment.
It's one thing to get your machine fixed. But, to get it back looking brand-new is even better.
A filthy and grungy computer never left my shop. Lots came in that way, but none ever left that way. You'd be surprised how many of those old yellowed and blackened beige boxes can be restored to a glistening white without paint. The right cleaners, and the right touch, and you can restore almost anything to a new shine.
I never found a blemish that I couldn't remove. And, they always looked nice and new when they left. Clean and shiny inside and out.
It would be nice if all repair shops worked that way.
Simple little things like that can keep your customers coming back for more. After-all, if you repair broken parts and clean it up without charge then they'll love it.
They'll happily pay the repair costs of the defect if they get a little bonus. And, it definitely let's them know that you were careful and precise with their computer while you had it.
And, it really doesn't add much time to offer that service if you work quickly and know what you are doing.

  • Is there a Window's Media Player download compatible with the INTEL iMacs?

I tried downloading MWP for Mac OSX and the file name was Windows Media.sitx and I couldnt do anything with that. I also tried downloading Windows Media Components for quicktime but it said it wasnt compatible with intel Macs.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    iMac G5 Intel Core Duo, 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although Microsoft no longer supports it, WMV9 for OSX works on the intel machine, running under Rosetta. That .sitx file you download can be uncompressed with the free Stuffit Expander for intel:
    http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/universalbeta.html
Or re-download the WM Player as a .bin file from MS directly:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/ misc/winmp_osx.xml&secid=80&ssid=8&flgnosysreq=True
Alternatively, you can download the Popwire components for intel Mac, which allow WMV files to play in native Quicktime (7.0.4 and below only) or Flip4Mac, which will do the same, although only by running your Quicktime Player in Rosetta, as F4M has not released a universal version as of yet.

  • Sims 2 and other games on the intel imac?

Hi there just bought the Imac and am new at all this stuff. My girlfriend wanted to get Sims 2 , and i wanted to first check if it will run ok on the Imac with the intel processor?
    thanks!
    a

It not only runs (many legacy programs ran under Rosetta).
But with this upgrade, it runs under Intel on the Mac natively.
