How the heck do I install windows on my eMac?

Okay, by the topic heading you all know I'm a serious newb when it comes to anything Mac-related, but I've been messing around in the PC environment for a long time. A friend donated this eMac so I can familiarize myself with how Macs operate, and although I have a few operational PCs, I'd like to install XP Pro on this machine to mess with windoze games using Mac graphic setup.
Everyone says 'bootcamp', but not being an Intel processor, bootcamp won't install, let alone do anything useful. It's a PowerPC G4, 1.25 GHz, with a gig of RAM, 80 gig HDD...USB 2.0 configuration.
Is there anything out there that will make it possible for me to pull this off, or can I grab an Intel processor for this unit? As noted before, I'm pretty much Mac illiterate thus far, so this seemed to be the place to expose myself to the ridicule that will no doubt follow my posting. That said, if anyone has any legitimate solutions, I thank you in advance.

Sorry CeeJay. Yer out of luck every whichway. An Intel chipset is a must have. We used to be able to run Windows v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y in emulation on a PPC equipped Mac like yours using a package called VirtualPC for Mac. As far as I know, Microsoft bought the technology and killed it.
If you really want to research this, there may still be signs of it at microsoft.com. Dig deep. I wish you luck. You are more likely to find VirtualPC for Windows. Why anyone would want to run a Windows emulator in Windows beats me hollow.
The technology is absolutely useless for the PC's 3D games but may be worthwhile for software which does not push performance.
As for installing an Intel CPU, you would need the entire Intel chipset. Absolutely not practical. It's a million times easier if you have access to an Intel Mac.

  • Hello i have a problem with my MacBook Air they wiped out the operating system then installed windows 7 how do i re install the apple firmware

Hello i have a problem with my MacBook Air they wiped out the operating system then installed windows 7 how do i re install the apple firmware please help

That is incorrect. You can install Windows on a Mac, any Mac, without having OS X installed on it.
To the OP you will need the original system reinstall USB thumb drive that came with your Mac Air if it is older than a Mid 2011 model or if it is newer than a Mid 2011 model you use the Online Internet recovery system.
If you don't have that original reinstall USB thumb drive you can order one from Apple for a small charge. Call Apple and ask to speak to someone Specifically to order a Replacement USB system reinstall thumb drive for your model year. You will need the serial number of that Air. It is etched into the bottom of the case.

  • I want to triple boot Have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives and I want Windows 7 on another drive, can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on another internal drive?

I want to triple boot my Mac Pro I have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives (osx on drive 1, xp on drive 2) and I want Windows 7 on another drive (drive 4, drive 3 is used by osx for storage), can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on drive 4?
I realise bootcamp only allows 2 operating systems and refit could change the size of my current xp drive to accomodate W7, that is not an option here for various reasons one being the drive is pretty much at capacity with only about 30gig free (I work with video so that free space fluctautes quite a bit). I have a brand new drive 4 with 1TB set aside ready for W7 but I'm unsure how to go ahead?
any help or advice would be really appreciated, thanks

Boot Camp is used to support Windows on the same drive.
You can have a different OS on every drive.
You could have Windows 7, Vista, and XP all on one drive if you so choose.
I recommend not putting Windows and OS X on the same dirve when talking about Mac Pro - unless you just need something small and lite.
Remove all your other drives while you install Windows 7.
You could even relocate XP - if you need it even - or recover the hard drive space.
You should always keep 30% free for Mac OS; same for data/media drives.
Considering 1.5TB WD Black $110.... and you want OS X to be on a fast high performance drive as well.

  • Windows 8 - Windows could not cmplete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation

Having SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 I attempted to do a pretty simple task.
Create a capture media for Windows 8 64 Bit and capture the OS.
The system in question is a Dell Latitude 6430u and OEM Windows 8.
The system ran as expected, the capture went as expected, but when I deploy the image (Back to the same laptop mind you)
    The following occurs:
Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.
    Things that I've tried:
Set the SATA to various modes as it was on RAID on as speculated in some posts
Saw a posting that suggests pressing SHIFT F-10 to get in to some prompt and run oobe; doesn't work here, I think.
Added Dell Driver Packs for the system
As for log files, I'll check C:\Windows\Panther and see what's there.
Any ideas on how to correct this? Is there a way to go in to the image itself to do so?

    Sorry, I'm not using CM2007, but CM 2012 SP1, CU3.
I went through the smsts log and found several instances where drivers were missing so I'm guessing that's why it pitched a wobbly about not being a suitable system for the Windows setup.

Which doesn't make sense since the image that I am trying to put on the system is the one I took it from. Before putting the image out I went to Dell's web site and got the Windows 8 drivers for the system and distributed them as I usually do.
I got the drivers from here -
    http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/4372.latitude-6430u-windows-8-driver-cab.aspx
What I don't get is that I can take the Windows 8 install.wim and do an OSD task with it and there is no issue with drivers.

  • Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows...

I have a G62-340US that had a hard drive crash. I installed a new hard drive and used the HP Restore Disks. The laptop will go through the boot process and Windows will give a message" Setting up system for first time use" or something to that affect.  A diolog box then comes up and says "Windows could not complete the installation.  To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." If I hit enter, I am caught in a loop. I can control-alt-del and kill audit.exe and bring up the system. However, everytime I reboot, I get the above error.
The system is running Win7 64 bit.
Any ideas on how to complete this installation and move forward?
Also, the HDD is 320 gb but the system is only recognizing 68 gb.
    Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi:
That happened to me too and I tried twice to get the disks to work and the failure occurred at the same place.
If you bought a new hard drive of at least the same size in GB as the old one, the disks should have worked.
There is no telling why they don't and many folks have issues with the recovery disks for one reason or another.
Fortunately there is a method you can use to get W7 back on your PC if you can read the full 25 character windows product key on the bottom of your PC.
    Here's what you can do...
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • HT1657 i rented the twilight movie, how the heck do i watch it. it doesnt show up anywhere!! but says i rented it . i did it yesterday. help !!i am so frustrated!!

i rented the twilight  movie, how the heck do i watch it. it doesnt show up in my library but says i have it rented.

Go to your music library on itunes, click on the box in the top-left corner of your window that says Music, once you do this there will be an option to click on movies, click on it, and then there will be a little bubble near the top of your window that says rented, click on the bubble, and that will take you to your rented library.
Note: For itunes 11.0.1 and up.

  • How I was able to install Windows 10 on HP Stream 13 (32GB SSD)

I wanted to install windows 10 on my Stream 13 (only 32 GB SSD). With the recovery partition and windows 8.1 plus all updates i was left with not nearly enough space to install Windows 10.  After a few failures I was able to make this work and this is how. My solution to the problem. This is not to say that a easier one may turn up but this is the only thing that worked for me. *Compleate a fresh recovery to create as clean of a install as posible*Install all updates*use the Media creation tool to create a USB for the instal.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10*On another USB I created a copy of the system recovery (because my goal was to delete the recovery partition after installing windows 10 and save some much needed space)*Click on the setup on the USB made from the media creation tool (dont boot in to it this time and run a full clean install or windows will not recognise your 8.1 key). follow the directions to upgrade your pc. *Somewhere here i was told that i didnt have enough space on my  computer but was given an option to select an additional drive or USB to compleate the upgrade. I used my micro SD but had the option to use a USB thumb drive as well.  Just plug one in with enough space, refresh and select the one you want.*once done I was running a upgraded version of windows 10. and all was well.  Now at this point my hardware was recognized for Windows 10 and I can reinstall all I want.*Personally at this point i didnt want the 7GB windows 8 recovery paertition just sitting there. *I now ran the USB made by the media creation tool to run a full clean install of windows 10. During that process I was able to format the C: drive and additionaly the recovery partition (but not remove it yet)  There are plenty of youtube videos on how to run this clean install with step by step help.*once windows 10 was back up I used DISKPART to remove the recovery partition and then went back in to Disk Management to expand the main partition to fill the remaining empty space on the SSD.  Again there are many great videos and posts on how to run DISKPART and Disk Management. Sounds rough but was very simple and done very fast. *Lastly ran all updates and followed a little guide from HP on how to make sure you have all the right GP drivers up and going on a Clean install. near the bottom you will see Steps to take after upgrading to windows 10. *Now DO NOT LOOSE that USB recovery tool you made because that can always get you back to factory settings.  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=5071171&docId=emr_na-c04734799&docLocale=en_US  Sorry if any of this is unclear but when I was trying to get this to work I could nto find anything with the steps to take and I ended up having to use the system recovery USB i made time and time again to start again.       EDIT:  I have am HP Stream 13 that came with 8.1   The hard drive ont hese things is not large enough to compleate the upgrade to windows 10. So i preformed a clean install from a USB.  Now i have 10 and it is not activated.  NOW I read that you MUSST preform the upgrade first in order for windows to detect your hardware and register it as valis for the free windows 10.   BUT since upgrade was not posible I have a windows 8.1 key that is useless since there is no service to change the key to a windows 10 key..   This is insane. these laptops are being advertisd with the free upgrade to windows 10 yet are not able to be upgraded.  Not sure what to do now.    I am running a new HP stream 13 touchscreen with windows 8.1 I want to upgrade to windows 10 before I am back to school (before i have to install all kinds of software and files) Obciously the Stream does not have enough SSD left to preform the upgrade.  I have created a clean install USB thumb drive but am worried about using it.  From what i have read the recovery partition that is not deleteable houses files that the system accesses. When i do a Clean install wiping the C drive (but not the partition) will everything work? will i loose the use of that partition space forever?   and lastly I used a program to access my windows key since it is located in the bios not on a sticker but I want to know if anyone else has done this and did it auto detect? or did they run in to any problems.  Sorry if this is all posted somewhere else but i am not finding any information at all.  EDIT!   I do have a USB recovery that i can use if i must to windows 8.1    I installed 10 from a USB and it is workign fine other than it is now saying my KEY isnt valid for this clean install. How do i convert my 8.1 key to a key that will work for 10? I cant see myself buying a new key from microsoft when the laptop was sold with an advert saying free upgrade to 10.   It isnt posible to do a upgrade because of the space required for the upgrade to do its work. this is a real pain.

OMG, what a pain in the neck.  I bought a brand new Stream 13, got it on saturday.  Fired it up, and it immediately wants to upgrade to Win10, which is great.  But, I run it through windows update and it fails, 5 times in a row.  Doesn't really give you an explanation, except update failed.  Thanks a lot So, I download Win10 from MSFT, and put it on a USB, but that fails too, first, the machine refuses to boot off of a USB drive.  If I run the update directly (setup.exe off of the USB, it fails too, but this time telling me I don't have enough drive space. So, i called HP support, remember this PC is 5 hours old at this point.  I got the runaround like i've never seen before.   I talked to 7 different people over a 95 minute perioud, none of whom could help me.  The last person wanted me to pay for a support subscription plan.  Yeah, I am gonna do that for a $200 laptop.
At one point it gives you the option to specify another drive to store the backup of the old OS on.  I tried that, but then later in the upgrade process it says to insert removable media, with an OK and Cancel button. I assume it is looking for that other drive...But it is in there, but apparently it can't find it. So, then i downloaded the ISO from MSFT and made my own USB.  Still won't boot off of it.  Tried running setup.exe but that fails too. Then I copied all the setup files to the micro-SD, and run setup from there.  One thing that the setup does is it asks to download additional updates.  I chose NO, and what do you know, I got one of the insider builds of windows 10 (10162) installed!  But, it is very broken, and can't even get to the store. So, I go to windows update to see if it will move to 10120 (the retail build), but no luck, it tells me my account isn't signed up for windows insider (this is my daughter's PC).  So, i sign her up, but now it won't find any new updates.  SO, I log to the laptop wil MY account, and now it finds 101240!!!! But, when I try to run it, it tell me I need more free space.  now mind you, i haven't installed a single thing, haven't copied a single file, but I am several hundred megabytes short.  I did try the option with storing the old OS files on a different drive, but got the "insert removable media - Ok/Cancel" again.  Arrgggghhhh.  I have removed my daughter's login from the machine, and have now reclaimed just barely enough space to make the upgrade happy. So, this is where I am at for the moment.  Next I will try DiskPart to add the 7GB of recovery space to the C drive, i bet it works then. I give this today only, and if I can't figure out, it goes back to HP, and I'll spend a little more money and get something with more than 21GB of HDD.  Really, shouldn't HP just put the recovery partition on a USB thumb drive and include that with the PC ???? Frustrated in Denver.

Make sure your own music files are saved in the proper folder (Digital sounds) whether in your memory card or the phone memory, the location should still be:
    Sound Clips > Digital Sounds.
If your songs/mp3s are saved anywhere else, it will not show up as a selectable ringing tone.
You can move your songs through File Manager on your phone if they are in the wrong location (Options > Move to folder).
Hope that clarifies it for you.

You can't. Safari is an Internet browser and therefore requires a connection to the internet. The only way to connect an iPod touch to the internet, for any purpose, is via WiFi.
By the way, your capslock and ? keys appear to be stuck - you might want to get them looked at.

  • How the heck did this guy draw with his pencil 3d extruded?

In the following video Mr. Smith first extrudes some text. Then about 40 seconds in he takes his pencil and draws a line and it's automatically extruded. How the heck did he do that? It looks like it's extruded just as soon as he releases his click. Am I just missing that he's doing "shift-control-e" to apply the same 3d effect immediately to his line? Sure seems like he didn't have to do that.. I can see in the Appearance panel that there is "no selection", but that 3d extrude effect is shown there.

Understand also: Effects (including 3D Effect) can be applied at the Group or Layer level; not only at the object level. So you can "draw into" a Group in Isolation Mode or "draw onto" a Layer that has 3D Effect applied. In that way, When you do, the various objects you draw not only have the same 3D Effect, but share the same 3D Effect; so they share the same perspective.

  • How the heck do I back up my hard drive?!

Sorry if this question gets asked every week, but I searched the "Tiger" forums and still can't figure this out.
I've owned an iMac since last August but haven't used it much, so I have no after-market software and very little data on it. Unfortunately, the little bit of data I have is every family photo we've taken since last August (on iPhoto) and given the fact that it's a PITA to sync those files with my wife's Dell, I really need to start backing up on a regular basis. In addition, the guys at the "Genius Bar" at my local Apple store tell me there's a defect in the hardware, and advise me to back up my computer before I give it to them to fix.
Before buying this Apple, I owned several Windows-based PCs. Windows had a utility that would back up the whole computer, and ordinary data backups were fast and easy. The "geniuses" tell me there's no such utility in my version of OS-X, and that I need to buy an external drive and install the third-party software that comes with the drive.
Okay, I'm sitting down, give it to me straight:
    (1) What's the easiest way for me to back up all the data on my computer, and can I back it up onto one or more CDs? I find it hard to believe that Apple's OS doesn't have a utility that Windows has had for a decade or so, and that I need to buy more hardware and software after purchasing this iMac that costs about twice as much as a Dell with more speed and memory.
    (2) Given that I'll never add software to this machine (other than NeoOffice), do I need to back up anything but data, ever? I have the CDs that came with my iMac, so do I need a bootable copy of my whole hard drive?

    John

It is a simple process, you just chose the wrong HD, the ones with the One-Button touch features, and/or require installing any Software to use are just not good, we just need a Simple Firewire drive to make it simple!
Yes, it's funny, I just had a couple of hours to think about the last questions I posted, and I realized that "KISS" is all I can handle. All I want (all I can handle, really) is a very simple process for backing up data, nothing more.
So it looks like I have two things I need to clarify: hardware and software.
As far as hardware goes, all I'm looking for is something that plugs into the computer like a "thumb drive," but that holds much more data and can transfer it much more quickly. Is that what you mean by a "Simple Firewire drive"? I've looked at the devices on the web page that you linked to, but I can't figure out what the heck they are. Do you remember the first time you looked under the hood of a car, maybe when you were seven or eight years old, and you had no idea what all those hoses and wires and metal things were? Well, that's what it's like for me when I look at that web page.
Now the software part. I used to own a Windows computer at home and still use one at work. I can move and copy files easily on those machines. And I've copied some files from this iMac to my wife's Windows computer via a thumb drive. No problem. But then I read the article at the link that Japamac posted, and I feel like I have no idea what to do.
If you actually read the from beginning to end, it doesn't tell you how to do what it recommends, which is to back up the entire <user> folder:
    http://computing.fandm.edu/training/mac/backup.php
First it talks about backing up the entire <user> folder, but before the article describes how to do that, it skips ahead to a discussion of the limitations on the storage size of CD media and never gets back to telling the reader how to back up the entire <user> folder. Near the end of the article, in the middle of a discussion of how to back up onto an iPod, the article says to "locate and simply drag the data you want to backup from its parent location to the disc volume window." Two problems here: (1) what about backing up ALL the data in the <user> folder; and (2) how do I know that dragging will "copy" rather than "cut"? The last thing I want to do is cut the <user> folder off my hard drive and dump it somewhere else!
At this point, I can't believe people keep saying that Apple computers are more user-friendly than Windows computers. On Windows, this would be a piece of cake to do with the pull-down menus on the mouse: (1) select the <user> folder with one left-click of the mouse; (2) right-click to "copy;" (3) move the cursor to the storage drive; (4) left-click to select it; and (5) right-click to "paste." Done.
Please help. All I want to do is find a simple way to back up my data onto an external drive.
    Regards,
    John
