How to 4:3 in FCE 3.5

So I am just learning FCE and am using a DVD Tutorial to learn things around. I decide to play with an old video originally imported using either imovie HD or 8. It opens fine. Now when I look at a clip in the viewer it is setting it in 16:9 instead of 4:3 as it was in iMovie. I have searched around for a setting that controls this but can't find it. I tried in the Canvas if there was a way to make it fit into the box but I can't. I do know it was not recorded in HD. When I look at the clip's properties, it does show Frame size of 720x480 and Pixel Aspect as HD (1440x1080). Any idea how to make a 4:3 using FCE? Please take it easy on a rookie. LOL Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Thanks Tom but not following you on this one. When I imported it into iMovie it was 4:3 and not wide screen. In fact when I watch it in iMovie and watch the final exported movie on DVD it is all in 4:3. So even though it is 4:3 in iMovie, when importing into FCE, it can become wide screen? Being new to FCE, not sure what ingest means...
Now if I do a complete new import from the camera into FCE, what setting should i set to make it 4:3? Thanks again

Thanks, just so I know we are talking about the same items please let me know - When you say "run Prokit" do you mean downloaded? Which I did. I dont have Prokit 4.0.1 if you are referring to that, do I need this first? Please explain what application name I am looking for if other than Prokit which is sitting in my "download folder" do I need to manually put it into the apps folder? Sorry if the questions are layman but this area is not a very strong point for me. Thanks for your help so far.

how to import mp4v to FCE?

Download and innstall MPEG Streamclip (freeware) on your system.  Use that app to convert the MP4 files to QuickTime DV (not DV Stream) for standard definition footage, or AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) for high definition footage.
You can import the converted file(s) into an FCE project.

  • How do I import to FCE 4 from iMovie 9?

I can't figure out how to import my iMovie 9 files to FCE 4.  I've gone to the import FCP XML from iMovie and selected my clips and when I try to import them I get a critical error message.  I also tried exporting the iMovie project as an XML and then importing that file into FCE and I got an error message there too.
    Thank you for your advice.

Directly importing an iMovie project into FCE has always been an iffy proposition because of the differences in the two apps, the way they handle video, and limitations on what can actually be migrated.
It is best if you just start over in FCE.   You can easily import your clips from your iMovie events folders.  Or if you absolutely must preserve any editing, transitions, etc that you did in iMovie, export your iMovie project as a QuickTime file, then import that into FCE.  (Understanding of course that by doing it that way you cannot re-edit those transitions & effects in FCE because at that point they are embedded in the QuickTime file.)
Also be aware that FCE is designed to natively edit QuickTime video that uses either Apple DV or Apple Intermediate Codec encoding.  If your iMovie clips are not QuickTime and/or not based on one of those two codecs you will need to convert them appropriately to use them in FCE.  MPEG Streamclip can handle most conversions you may need to do.

I couldn't remember from my earlier experience what the software was that worked, but I found FCS Remover on my Mac in Applications, so that's what I plan to try.
That will do the job removing all the FCE related files.

And I was surprised to learn the new iMacs don't have a DVD burner which I use all the time on this iMac and my newer Macbook Pro.  I suppose that's why the prices start at $1299?  I will look, but does the Apple store sell DVD burners?  And assuming so, do any of you have recs?
As Keith mentions Apple sells one as an optional extra.
There are others on the market as well.
My experience is to do some serious homework before buying any unit to make sure it is compatible with your specific Mac. Some users have been very disappointed.
I use an OWC (Other World Computing) bluray burner with several types of connections and it works fine.

Lastly, it has taken me about 4 years to master FCE.  I am willing to go to FCP X if those here can advise me about 1)how tough is the learning curve if you're good at FCE and 2) is it a better program?
    Question 1.
Totally different to FCE and you need to forget most of what you learnt there to adapt to FCP X.
Most dramas occur learning FCP X because users try to think and use FCP X the the old way.
It took me some adjusting to get into the new methods and thinking and terms used.
Advice: Read the manual and unlearn FCE. Search the FCP X forum or ask a specific question, the info there is mounting.
    Question 2.
    Better is a subjective term.
I have sold all my old legacy FCP stuff and moved on to FCP X.
As a broad statement it makes it easier for someone who knows little about editing and the quirks of codecs to Import and Edit a Project.
That being said the underlying complexity of the app is very powerful.
Like all apps it's not perfect, the current version is 10.0.8 and I made the shift at 10.0.7 when it had matured to the extent I was personnaly happy to make the jump.

  • How do I de-register FCE from old computer?

I am attempting to put Final Cut Express on my new computer and the error states that the serial number is not valid.   So I thought I would try to de-register FCE from my old computer however I haven't discovered how to do that.   Any ideas?

There is no de-registration.  Only deinstallation.  The FCE license permits you to install FCE on 1 desktop Mac and 1 laptop Mac provided you own both Macs and only run FCE on one of them at a time.
    Two questions -
Is your existing (older) Mac running on the same network as your new Mac where you are trying to install FCE?  If so, shut it down while you install FCE on the new Mac.
Are you trying to install FCE on a new Mac that has Lion?  FCE is not supported on Lion.

  • Help with knowing how to save and archive FCE edits properly

    Hi there
When I capture footage from my camcorder, the original video files seem to get saved into my 'Capture Scratch' folder within the 'Final Cut Express Documents' folder. I have now edited the movie and want to save the finished edit, along with the timeline on my external harddrive.
My question is, what Final Cut Express files do I need to transfer over to my external hard drive so that I have all the necessary files for my edit to work perfectly, should I wish to continue editing it in the future? Do I have to keep transferring the whole 'Final Cut Express Documents' folder for each and every new video I make?
When I say that I want to save the finished edit, i mean that I want to be able to have the exact FCE page come up just as it did when I was editing it (ie. with original video files in the bin, timeline, transitions etc).
In Imovie 6HD it was easy as all the workings, the actual edit and the original footage were saved within one folder, but there seems to be various different parts to my Final Cut Express edit dotted around the folders.
    Can anyone help me?
    Many thanks
    Daniel

    Hi there Tom
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly.
Ok, so I transfer/copy the video contents of the 'Capture Scratch' project, but where is all the timeline info, transition info etc (ie. the processes that I went through to edit the actual video footage) to accompany these original video files? Do I need to transfer this file along with the 'Capture Scratch' files to have all that I need for future re-editing?
One last question. If I have a finished edit in HD and dont want to have to store all the footage that I didnt need, can I save the finished edit as a 'Self-Contained Movie'? If I do this will the HD footage be compressed in some way or will its quality stay as original? Can it be imported back into FCE at a later date for re-editing?
Im so sorry for all these questions
    Daniel

  • How to start working with FCE

I just bought Final cut express, I have no idea what Im doing, any body can help me if there are any online tuterial for using FCE4.
    thanks

As Ian indicated, Tom's books are the way to go.
If you're buying now, get a copy of Final Cut Express HD v3.5 Editing Workshop. It includes a DVD with practice clips, a video on the differences between iMovie and FCE, and sample filters & effects. If you like (or prefer) video tutorials, get a copy of his Final Cut Express HD Made Easy DVD.
The main things that FCE4 has that would not be covered in a v3.5 book are 1) capturing AVCHD, 2) the open format timeline, 3) dealing with iMovie08 imports. Nearly everything else is identical, certainly all the basic editing capabilities are identical.

  • How can I update the FCE 4.0 to 4.0.1 in Mavericks?

  • How many video lines does FCE V3.5 has?

I heard that there is only one video line as reflected by the review for FCE software.
    Is that true?

    Hi Ian,
Not an Americanism that I know of. I read the post too and couldn't tell if he was talking about interlaced video lines or FCE video tracks. You asked the right question in your first reply.

  • Cloning Effects in FCE: How to do a zig zag crop & blur the boundary ?

    Hi there,
I am trying to learn to do clones of boy in FCE. I managed to do it in Sony Vegas Pro & looking forward to learn to do it in FCE.
I am trying to to make 8 clones of my boy to fit in the video. I use 8 tracks of video (one for each clones), just like I did in Sony Vegas Pro.
The problem I am facing is the cropping tools in FCE is just a straight horizontal or straight vertical line to reveal the video underneath the track.
But because of the 8 clones & it is cramped, in some places, I need to crop a diagonal or curve lines. In Sony Vegas I did the curve line by clicking many straight but shorter lines. But how to do that in FCE ?
Another problem I am facing is the at the boundary of the overlapping videos, I can see an obvious straight line. In Sony Vegas, there is a function to blur the lines at the boundary. How do I do that in FCE ?
    Thanks

  • How to set a Playback Region in FCE?

Is there a way to set a 'playback region' in FCE? I want to work on some audio fade-ins and fade-outs and need to be able to get 'real close' to the sound so I know where to drop and raise it.
I know this can be done in Soundtrack and Garageband, but I'm not seeing how to do this in FCE.
    Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Tom. Been through your book a couple of times ... so far. Learn something new each time.
