How to access Apple Hardware Test?

I just installed a fresh copy of Lion over Snow Leopard hoping that I woul be able to use the AHT but it just starts up like normal when I hold the D key... I've tried it a billion times. Anyway I can put the AHT on my iMac? It's an A1224.

When you upgrade OS X or you erase the hard drive, Apple Hardware Test stops being saved on the hard drive. If you want to run Apple Hardware Test, you have to insert the Mac OS X disc which came with your computer and start the computer holding the D key. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Cannot access Apple Hardware Test

I recently learned about the Apple Hardware Test, and decided to run it, just to see if it reported anything wrong.
I have a MBP from early 2008, 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 15.4".
The built-in optical drive no longer reads DVD-type media. It will read CDs, but not DVDs of any kind. This has been verified by an Apple Genius; it needs to be replaced.
I have a Snow Leopard disc in an external drive, connected via USB. When the Mac is running, I see the Snow Leopard disc; I can access normally.
However, when I restart (or turn off, then on) the computer, and press and hold 'D' right away, nothing different happens; it boots into OS X just as it normally does. I have tried this a few times, both restarting and turning off then on, holding down the 'D' key right away.
Is the problem that the OS X disc is in an external drive? If this is the problem, then how is the AHT accessed on a MacBook Air?
Is the problem the Snow Leopard disc itself; does it not have the AHT on it to begin with? I can no longer locate the original 10.5 discs that came with my computer, but I believe I may be able to get ahold of a relative's later-version 10.5 discs.
Or is there some other problem or something else I'm doing wrong?

Yes, 100% certain. AHT comes only with the original discs that were supplied with your model MBP.
eww has suggested a link for you where they can be purchased for $33. However, with an internal optical drive that cannot read CDs/DVDs, your only options are:
1. Repair/replace the internal optical drive.
2. Purchase an external optical drive.
3. Create a partition in your external drive and then using either Carbon Copy Cloner or the Restore feature within Disk Utility, create a bootable image of the original OS DVD. When you start up from this bootable image it behaves in exactly the same way as if you started up from the OS DVD.

The above made me conclude that the "external drive" was an external hard disk drive. Reading it again, I can see that you mean it's an external optical drive.

eww is very knowledgeable and well respected in these forums so I'm hesitant to disagree with him. I believe that one can carry out a AHT from an external optical drive but will test later today or tomorrow to make sure.

No, it's not only true if it's the original hard drive.
It is, however, true if the OS on the replacement hard drive was installed using the original disks that came with that model Mac. The OS can the be upgraded to a later version but the fact that the original OS DVDs were used then, assuming the Mac model is of the vintage that allows it, a hidden small partition is created thus allowing the user to boot into AHT without needing the original discs to start from.

How to launch Apple Hardware Test from a USB optical drive?

Hi all!
First off, and before you guys starting proposing solutions I can't implement, I don't, repeat DON'T have a Firewire optical drive, nor am I going to buy one: I recently had to buy a USB LG optical drive to compensate for my SuperDrive going AWOL on me. I used said drive to reinstall OSX about a month ago, so this LG drive works just fine, thank you.
The thing is, I'd like to conduct an Apple Hardware Test, and I know you have to boot from OSX CD n°1 (in my case) to do that. Alas, since I can't boot from the CD in my SuperDrive by keeping the D key down, all I have is this LG thingy, and I wonder how I can conduct my hardware test with a USB optical drive.
I'll sum it up for you:
1) My SuperDrive isn't working, stopped working about the same time I installed this EFIng (guffaw, guffaw) Security Update 2009-001;
2) I don't have a Firewire optical drive;
3) All I have is a USB optical drive and MacOS X CDs.
4) Booting with the OSX CD in my USB optical drive and keeping D, C or alt keys didn't help.
I read in another forum that you could somehow copy the content of the OSX CD on a flash drive, then boot from the flash drive and conduct an AHT, but I'm not sure how it can be done.

Anyway, I did just what you said, drag'n'drop and all. The problem is, when I boot from the USB hard drive, it's exactly as if I were booting from the CD: first I'm asked to choose a language, then the install screen appears, and I can either reinstall on my startup disk from the USB hard drive (that's kinda cool, but I don't think I leave in on my USB hard drive, which can only content 40Gb, because I've almost 25Gb worth of data to retransfer soon...
So, in a nutshell, I couldn't find Apple Hardware Test anywhere. I even explored the CD content, but there are so many files...
What's my best option now? Could AppleJack help me here? Can I install AHT on my startup disk and boot on it using a special set of keys?

MacMini 2010 4,1 how to run Apple Hardware Test from /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics folder

I have a 2010 Mac Mini4,1 with SnowLeapard and plan to upgrade to Mavericks, but can't run Apple Hardware Test from my applications disk 2 that came with the machine. For some reason the Mac can read it and kicks it our after about a minute. Seems to be able to reado other disks, so this one may be corrupted. I found info on this community that says that the AHT is on the hard disk and I found it here /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics using terminal. When open that folder using terminal it open a window with that folders contents. My problem is I can execute the only unix executable in that folder. It responds with "No application knows how to open /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/diags.efi"
Can someone help me out here or if there is downloadable somewhere on line that I can get?

Additionally if your using a wireless keyboard and it is not invoking the Hardware Test using the D key immediately after the chine, then you may need to use a USB keyboard. Adding that any Apple, PC or generic Logitech USB keyboard should work for invoking the startup commands.

How to run Apple Hardware Test on Mac Pro with ML preinstalled?

I have Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) which came with Mountain Lion preinstalled. It didn't have install DVDs. How do I run AHD? Restarting with D, or command+D, or option+D didn't work. It would just restart the OS. And Mac Pro didn't support Internet AHD eather.

I read this article. None of those applied to my case:
my Mac Pro came before 2013 and it doesn't have Apple Diagnostics built into it,
it doesn't have Apple Hardware Test built into it,
and my Mac Pro came with Mountain Lion preinstalled and it did not have system software disc or USB flash drive.
Restarting while holding down the D key simply doesn't work it just reboot back to the desktop.

How to start Apple Hardware Test under OS X Lion

Since I made the upgrade to OS X Lion I cannot start Apple Hardware Test with the old method that works under Snow Leopard.
Under OS X 10.6.8 I used to keep D key pressed until a picture appeared in the middle of the screen. With Lion it doesn't work, even under Wi-Fi internet connection.
Any suggestions?

How to burn Apple Hardware Test with 10.7 bought on the App store

Hi Community,
My friend has a MacPro with 10.7 on it. He upgraded his OS by buying it on the App store.
Now he has a weird screen at start up
We would like to run Apple Hardware Test on the install DVD but as mentioned he bought it from the App store.
The only file we get is an installer (4.2 GB) but it is not a start up disk.
Has anyone an idea of what could be done ?

Apple Hardware Test can be invoked on Lion installations by holding D while starting from the internal HD. If that does not work try Option D as that will attempt to load an Internet version of AHT.
I do not know of a way to burn AHT alone to DVD, but the disc that originally shipped with his Mac Pro will have AHT on it. Booting from that disc while holding the D key will load the disc's version.

I no longer have the software disk (OS10.5) that came with my MBP in July 2009. I only have the $10 Snow Leopard disk from Apple, which does NOT seem to contain any Apple Hardware Test (AHT). I have tried starting while holding d or option keys to no avail. Does neither my laptop nor OS 10.6 install disk have AHT? If not, can the appropriate AHT be obtained? My wife has an older MacBook & her original 10.5 install disk, but it will not launch AHT in my MBP. Any suggestions?

I like the advice to contact Apple and simplky pay for a new AHT. I did that, giving them the serial number of my MBP and indicating it was a June 2009 model, 2.66 gHz Core 2. However .....
I received yet another Apple FedEx shipmet with yet another different Mac OS X Leopard install DVD; this makes three in all!! Just as with the 1st DVD, these two will NOT mount on my desktop, are NOT seen by Disk Utility (or by Drive Genius) and cannot boot my MBP laptop in either of 4 different modes: (1) start-up with "d" (2) start-up with "option d" (3) start-up with "option" (4) start-up with "c". Apparently none of the disks I received have Apple Hardware Test on them, although that is what I paid for in early December. It may be that the last two disks really do have Mac OS X Leopard on them, but because I am now running OS 10.7.5 (purchased from App store with no AHT), the disks cannot be seen by my laptop.
          The two most recent incorrect DVDs I received have the following part numbers:
                    SRF2Z691-6037-A [indicated on packing slip 10.5 Retail-International]
                    SRF2Z679-6341-A (indicated on packing slip 10.5.6 Retail (PCrly 09) In]
          I happen to have MacTracker app 7.2.1. It indicates that my laptop is a MacBookPro 5,3 model A1286 EMC2325 and requires Apple Hardware Test 3A171. Apple never sent me the correct AHT.
          I suspect that Apple's cost to ship 3 incorrect DVDs by 1- or 2-day FedEx vastly exceeds the $17.44 price I paid for a working version of AHT for my computer, but have yet to receive.

IMac intel late 2006, lost DVDs, how to run apple hardware test

I have an iMac intel core 2 duo late 2006. I have upgraded it to snow leopard. From two months ago, it began to show distorted pictues, random lines/pixels/, and regular freezing. But if I boot it into the safe mode, it works well, although there is no sound or webcam. I did a research online and it seems that I should run apple hardware test (AHT) first. But the DVDs came withi this machines have been lost. where can I download this software? I would greatly appreciate your help if any of you who also have this model of machine and would like to lend me your DVDs.

There is no way to run the AHT without the discs.
If it works OK in safe mode then you might think about:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

How to run apple hardware test with no cdrom?

My MacBook Air won't recognise old or new hard drive and I believe I may have a logic board issue. My external CDROM has also just stopped working due to the wire being split some. I have two questions, can I get a replacement wire for the CDROM and can I run Mac hardware test on my 2008 MacBook Air without a CDROM? I still have the original CD1. I am currently booting the mac from a Lion installation on an external HDD attached to the USB port.
If the answer to those is no, where can I sell this stuff for scrap?

What model PowerMac do you have? The AHT is on the Install/Restore disc that came with your Mac.

I have a MacBook Pro with Lion Preinstalled, so AHT was present on the hard disc and worked when the product was new. One of the first things I did from new was run AHT and it worked fine. But now it doesn't start - instead the machine (eventually) boots into normal OS X.
Holding down "D" no longer starts Apple Hardware Test! Any idea what's happened and how I fix it? Or do I need to go to the Genius Bar?

Option-D works for an Internet-based AHT. However that only works with an internet connection. It doesn't seem to download it and install it - it needs internet every time.
Any idea how my local copy of AHT disappeared? I haven't repartitioned the drive or knowingly deleted anything. And how do I reinstate it (because if you need AHT your hardware problems may preclude internet access!)?

I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
     (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
     (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
     (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
     (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
     (E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
     (E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'-- routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
     (E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
     (E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ??? As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated! TIA.

I haven't optical drive. So how can I start the Apple hardware test without optical drive? I have a 15 inch mid 2010 macbook pro.

How do I run Extended Apple Hardware Test imac 21.5 mid-2010 mavericks? I have tried to start my computer holding down the "D" key but my iMac simply just restarts as normal.
I have checked the list of iMacs that can be upgraded to do an internet Extended Apple Hardware Test and I do not have one of those computers.
I cannot find any solution as yet.
I do not have the start up disks or the usb disks.

You can't run the hardware test without the installation discs.
