How do I access Disk Utilities when starting up.  Is it Shift, Apple, R?

If your objective is to get into the recovery partition, try COMMAND + R keys.

If you are still on Leopard OSX, it will not work.

  • No install disk-how to boot disk utilities

I bought this new (2013) iMac which obviously has Mt. Lion on it. I want to know about how to deal with emergencies, etc.
How do I boot from an install disk to run disk utilities, fix or repair, when there is no install disk? Likewise, in the past Apple has had several items that could be installed optionally, like developer tools, quicktime 7, etc. But with no actual disc how do I do that?
Also, I bought Lion for my Mac Pro (2006) and MacBook Pro (2011). I installed that on both. Now I realize the MBP can take Mt Lion. Do I have to make a separate purchase for Mt. Lion for the MBP? (The Mac Pro, sadly, even though it was top of the line at the time, the 2006-2007 models cannot be upgraded to Mt. Lion, but I falsy assumed the MBOP had the same limitation. Now that I know it does not...
Apple tech support has been great for me of late. Some of my difficulties lie in that I am a very long time Mac user but halted at Snow Leopard. I just recently bought new iMac; new iPad Mini; and Lion for MBP; all of which hustle me fully into iCloud. It's hard to separate out which of these new things might be cause for clarification. So even when Apple customer support is very gratious and helpful, I continue to have multiple problems and it's just too much time on the phone given that I get shuttled from one department to another for each different issue.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • How to avoid JMS validation when starting weblogic server

    Hi All,
When starting up WebLogic server, it will validate JMS destinations one by one for deployed applications.
If I don't connect the VPN, then these JMS destinations are not reachable, and WebLogic Server will spend a lot of time to try connecting to these JMS destinations.
Thus it will take a lot of time to startup the WebLogic Server.
How can I disable JMS validation when starting weblogic server?
    Thanks and Regards!

  • Access denied error when starting DIAdem from LabVIEW

We are using the DIAdem Connectivity Toolkit in our application.  Our application starts a DIAdem session to handle querying and datasheet creation.  On a recent installation at a customer, our application was not able to communicate with DIAdem, i.e. we get an Access Denied error when our application tries to start up DIAdem.
The location of the error is in the DIAdem Open Connection.vi.  I believe it is when the Automation Open is run.
Is there some system setting that could be blocking communication between the two, i.e. ActiveX setting, etc?  If so, where could we control these settings from?

    Hello Derrick,
While cBauer is away from the office, I will be working with this case on his behalf.  I will try to answer your questions as best I can to determine what might be causing this failure.
    1. The error which we encounter is an "Access Denied" error (as stated above).  I am currently investigating the error code, and will update this post accordingly when I have it.
    2. Our application is a built (.exe) application using LabVIEW 8.5 and DIAdem 10.2
    3. We do not install the toolkit directly on the customers machine as this is a built application.  We install the FULL LabVIEW 8.5 Runtime engine, as well as a licensed copy of the DIAdem 10.2 Basic edition.
    4. The error occurs in run-time environment at a customer site.  We have been unable to duplicate the error in development.
    5. We're using the "DIAdem Open Connection.vi" from the DIAdem.dll library to initialize the connection (this is the VI which appears to be producing the error via the "Automation Open" node), and we're using the "DIAdem Close Reference.vi" from the same library to close the reference.
    6. I will instrument a simple application which performs these tasks and post the results when we have tried this operation.
    7. I am unsure whether the repair operation has been attempted.  I will verify this behavior and again post the results to this forum.
Thank you for your help.  Please let me know if you require additional information.  Hopefully we can discover a solution to our problem.

  • Mac won't run disk utilities from start-up disk

I have an older Macbook Pro running OS 10.4.11. I need to run the disk utility from the cd to repair the disk drive, but when I restart holding down the C key, the machine still starts up in normal mode, not in disk utility mode. The disk I'm using is the iMac G5 startup disk, version 1 that came with one of my computers, not sure it came with the Macbook pro. If this is NOT the right disk to use, how can I get a new startup disk? Any helpful suggestions are welcome - this is a good working computer, and I'd like to keep it this way!

You can call Apple (phone # at the bottom of this page) and, with your serial number handy, order a new set of discs that are specific to your machine. G5's were before Intel machines, so I wouldn't expect it to boot an Intel machine!
    Good luck,

  • How to make disk space when I can't see my desktop?

I just got a low start up disk space message yesterday...turned on my MacBook pro today and all I get is a blue screen and error message that says "the iTunes application could not be opened.  An un known error occurred (13014)." the only thing I can get to is the apple so I can get to iPhoto but it wasn't letting me dump trash, pics, anything.  Please help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and I cant figure out how to access it. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sink my ipod with my account. How do I access my library?

I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and only contains "purchased" music. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sinc my ipod with my account. How do I access my entire library? Thanks

Unless you subscribe to Match, you will have to transfer your non-iTunes stuff from your old computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you want to copy non-iTunes music off of your iPod (eg, if your old computer doesn't exist), you'll need to use a third party program.  I don't know of any free ones anymore, but if you google, you can find several in the $19 range.

  • How To Access Disk Usage Graphic

A little while ago I stumbled upon a multi-colored, horizontal, single line graphic  divided into sections, which showed disk usage, each section and color representing a different type of data. This was not the Activity Monitor, which has a pie chart for usage, but does not identify the type of data using the disk space. Neither does this appear in neither Disk Utility nor System Profiler. A day or so ago, in a thread in the Lion community, I saw a screen shot of this graph. This lead me to look for this graphic again, but I have been unable to find a way to access it.
Can anyone lad me to it, please? Thanks.

Not exactly sure which utility you are refrring to by that description (a picture would have helped).  So below is a sampling of possible utilities. • How to access IS Utilities Module

    Hi,
I noticed in the standard ECC 6.0 i cannot find the menu path to IS-Utilities. Can someone suggest how can i access it?

    Hi,
If you can't see them in SAP tree, then most probably IS-U is not activated in your system.
Call transaction SFW5. Choose the "Utilities" business function set. Select the business function you want and check if it's activated.
    Hope it helps!

  • How can I stop alerts when starting iPhoto?

It's so annoying - I realize that at some point I moved or renamed some photos in my library because I find iPhoto very controlling in terms of making it difficult for me to find things easily or separate photos into the folders I create.
however is there not a setting to prevent iPhoto from trying to sort of calibrate files - I get about 200 alerts everytime I start up the program.
Any suggestions or references much appreciated.

1 - iPhoto is a database program as as such the organization and integrity of its data base is critical to its proper operation
I moved or renamed some photos in my library
2 - It is strongly recommended that you do not move, change, delete or otherwise modify any files within the iPhoto library - doing so may corrupt your library and lose data
There is never any need to do anything inside the iPhoto library - click here for a discussion on several of the many ways to correctly and safely access your photos.
is there not a setting to prevent iPhoto from trying to sort of calibrate files
iPhoto does not do any "calibration" of files - at start up or ever
I get about 200 alerts everytime I start up the program.
Exactly what are the alerts you are getting? THere probably is a solution but we would have to know what they are to help
Any suggestions or references much appreciated.
-- Provide the details of your problem including the wording of the alerts
-- Stay out of your iPhoto library
    -- and backup often
-- read and follow the iPhoto help topics
    Managing your iPhoto library
The best and safest way to manage your photos in iPhoto is by working with your photo library from within the iPhoto application.
WARNING: iPhoto stores your photo library within the iPhoto Library package in your Pictures folder. To avoid permanently deleting or corrupting your iPhoto library, do not attempt to alter the contents of this file.
It is a good idea, however, to routinely back up your iPhoto library to a DVD or external hard disk so you have a copy in case your photos become lost or corrupted for any reason.

  • How to display different screens when starting the Webdynpro app?

    Hi All,
When user starting up the Webdynpro app, it will first check some value in the persistent layer. If the check result is ok, it will show the normal app screen to the user; if the check failed, it will show the error screen.
Now I write the check function in the view controller, But I think it is not a good approach, because there are some initialize code in the component controller, so before my check function reached, the server will waste some resource to execute the initialize code in the component controller.
Would anyone give me some hints on how to move the check function to component controller and then display the different screen to the end-user?
