How to access file vault outside my account ?

I have enabled file vault on my account and now, obviously I lost access to my files outside it. The problem is I always used the root user to backup my computer data (this way i can remove all cache files). So, how do i get access to my files when logged in as root ?

This question would probably be best posted in the Mac OS X forums as it has nothing to do with your MacBook. The folks more familiar with Mac OS X's features might be found there. But, I don't think you can get access to those files through the root user (or any user) as that's the whole point of using File Vault: Protect your data by encrypting it. If there was a work-around for this, File Vault would be compromised.

  • Please help restore DMG missing partition and access file vault.

I am quite emotional at the moment, if anyone can help me access my files, pictures of my baby daughter and important documents.. I would be extremely grateful and willing do make a donation via paypal.
I have a 160 GB hard drive, which was partitioned as 30GB Spare and 130GB with my operating system and user files, including my filevault user directory.
My computer was downloading movies which filled up the 130GB partition, most of the 130GB is contained in my personal filevault user directory, my computer became very slow and unresponsive and i tried to free up space by deleting files which i no longer needed.
The machine became slow and un-responsive and required a number of forceful shut downs and restarts until the machine would no longer boot up, I inserted the OSX CD and attempted to boot from CD and use disc utility which now only displays my 30GB storage space, I was forced to install OSX on the remaining 30GB partition.
Now running OSX on the 30GB partition i used DISK DRILL to scan my hard disk for the missing 130GB partition which it did and i was able to save this as a DMG file to a external hard disk, now i am able to get this DMG to mount in the OSX i am running on the spare 30GB space, however i am not able to access the majority of the data inside the file vaulted user account.
I would like to know, would it be possible to restore the missing partition, as it remains on the HD but seems to be hidden.
Or is there somehow i can login to the user account on the mounted DMG ?
I am not very familiar with using terminal and would be extremely grateful for any advice or support leading to the recovery of my files.

Is there anyway to recover the larger partition ? In disk utility i made the mistake of pressing the - button which has left me with the following:
[NO NAME] - is currently where i have installed OSX temporarily.
And the grey space which contains my previous operating system and all my information which i desperately need to retrieve.
Is there anyway to restore and boot the missing partition ?
Probably not.     You've now deleted the partition.  It was probably useless anyway, though.
When i run disk drill or other disk recovery tools i am able to see the partition including including the files and my personal sparsebundle.
But you can't open the sparse bundle, much less see any of the files inside it, right?
Since you've already recovered the (probably-damaged) sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder, you'll have to work with it.
I'd strongly recommend making another copy of that on another external HD and putting that "on the shelf" before doing anything else to it.   I suspect you have little chance of recovery, but don't take the risk of further damage.
You haven't answered my earlier questions:
Have you tried to run Repair Disk on either the original or copied partition?
If that doesn't help, this might:  http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/fixfilevault.html
Do you have Time Machine backups?
Obviously, now that the partition has been deleted, you can't run repair disk on it, but try it on the recovered disk image.
You need more expertise than either Christopher or I have.  Since Apple no longer uses "legacy" File Vault, it will be more difficult for them to help, too.
Is your Mac covered by AppleCare?  If so, give them a call.
If not, your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar might be able to help:  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
Or check for an Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US
If not, one of them may know of an outside service than can help.  That will be quite expensive.

  • How to access file from AIX server to windows

    HI all,
My question is how to represent file folder name of that server
my file folder in AIX server and i want to access that file in window s machine.
    * is this the right way to represent the data folder in physical schema declaration
    file:///<aix server IP>/usr/oracledi/oracldi/data

No, it is not. Filename magic alone will not do the job.
AIX supports NFS (network file system) or you can use samba (implementation of the Microsoft SMB protocol to share resources in Un*x) .

  • Is there a training program for iCloud and how to use it effectively.  I have downloaded the booklet but not sure how I access files, photos saved on iCloud.

I am trying to understand cloud but have very little information for a non technical person.  Is there any product that I can access that will provide me with step by step details on how to access things stored in Icloud.  I have recenly lost all my data on my external hard drive and thought that I could restore through icloud.

It doesn't matter whick account you use to download the app.
You have to sign into the app (or iCloud.com from a web browser on your computer) with his Apple ID & password.
Find My iPhone will only work if it was enabled in the iCloud settings on the device and it was powered on with a connection to the internet

  • How to access files in a jar file?

Can anyone tell me how to access a file contained in my jar file?
I have about 15 classes jarred and deployed as an applet. I want to include in the jar file some .gif files to be used as icons in a tree view. Rather than trying to access them locally with all the security headaches this brings, can I not simply jar them as resources and point to them in my code?
    Any help much appreciated,
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    Hello Chris,
Please read this note taken directly from Sun, from their Java Tutorial/Creating a GUI with Swing/Using Other Swing Features/How to use Icons/Specifying the Image Source (whew!)
Note:  Applets are supposed to be able to load images from JAR files.
Currently, however, some browsers can't read images from a JAR file,
although they do successfully get classes from a JAR file.
With our applets, we currently hedge our bets by both putting
the image files in the applet's archive file (the JAR file containing
the applet's class files) and by putting the image files in the file
    system on the server.
*/So......Do you want to take a chance?

  • How to access files on internal hard drive

My Macbook Pro didn't boot so, after I spoke to one of the Apple advisors, I reinstalled the Mavericks on an external HD I had.
i Was advised that I will be able to access the files on my internal Hd and be able to copy all and saved them before reinstalling the whole computer/internal hd.
I did what I was told, and after booting my computer through Mavericks which is on external hd I didn't manage to access the files.
I went to recovery HD to check in disc utility whether my internal HD is still there and it is. And I can see the information about the HD, number of files and etc...
does anyone have any idea how to access these files and copy them and save the HD somehow?
make an image of Hd or something?
I Made a Genius appointment on 19th and I really need the computer...

IM hoping I wont have a problem moving the applications..?... my whole Adobe is it and I need it..
SHall I use the Migration assistant later after reinstalling the internal drive...?

I had an external drive connected to a mac with file vault enabled. I want to move this drive to my NAS storage

    I can access the drive.
    Thanks!

Right-click the drive icon and select Decrypt from the popup menu.

  • How to access Portal URL outside of the LAN

    Hi Experts,
Our J2EE engine is hosted on one machine and R/3 is installed on other machine (IP address is different). We have configured Web Dynpro ABAP iVIEW's and Transaction iViews in my portal. To be able to access these two iViews I have to maintain the IP addresses of both EP server and R/3 server IP's in every client host file.
Hence my client system is in LAN it is working with no issues, but we want to access the URL form out of LAN which is not possible at the moment.
Could anyone please advise me how to access the URL without maintaining the IP address in host file
    and
able to access the URL out side of the LAN.
    Thanks
    Murthy

    Hi Murthy,
Directly its not possible at all, For this you need to publish the Portal Server on Internet.
Once its published on internet  then you can access the URL without maintaining the
    IP address in host file.
In this your Basis Team and Network team will help you.

  • How to cancel file vault

i just got my late 2011 Macbook Pro logic board repaired and accidently clicked on "turn On filevault" and i never meant to do that...
Now i want to cancel file vault throu system preferences and is taling me NO, wait till my mac finishes emcrypting and thats exactly what I dont want to happen!!!!
ugh I m so frustrated right now you guys, please help!

    Hi Chucky Cruz,
That is exactly what you have to do. It has to finish before you can again revert it back. Unfortunately  there is is no other way. Or rather, fortunately there is no other way, otherwise at least part of it might be totally corrupt. And it might just be the most important part.
Have fun when you have your Mac 'back'!

  • How to access icloud from outside computer

I want to access my icloud mail from devices NOT my own such as work computer, travel in hotel, other persons computer.  I keep getting this message that tells me to LEARN more and gives all sorts of DOWNLOADING instructions to that computer. ENDLESS loop.   I am not downloading or configuring a public or work computer nor is it my device.   I JUST WANT TO ACCESS MY EMAIL REMOTELY LIKE I DID FOR YEARS ON MAC.MAIL AND CAN DO FROM ANYWHERE ANYTIME WITH OTHER WEB MAILS.  THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING.

Thanks Roger,   Today I signed up to the apple support communities specifically so I could thank you.   And to publically complain about what Apple did and did not do when then terminated "mobile me" in June 2012.   My short story.... prior to June 2012 I had access to my personal MAC G4 computer, a family member's old IPAD and my work PC.  I tired to migrate to I-Cloud but that was not possible without buying a new home computer.  So next best option would be to use a browser on either my G4, or the IPAD or the PC at work to access this new  "icloud" server, or whatever it is.  I've been a mac user since the very first macs came to the market so I'm not a novice.  I spent many hours googling and searching Mac support to find out how to access my email after they turned off mobile me.  I did not find a way, so I recently bought a mac mini to hopefully get all my new and historical email back and working again.   Yes, I did get back on email again using the  mac mini I had to buy, so apple did OK there.
But I find it negelent, perhaps deceptive, that Apple did not provide simple instructions like you did to the mobile me users that Apple effectively kicked off their email service, which I paid  for, for many years.  That's very much like stealing in my opinion....Apple couldn't send me an email to the Icloud link like you provided, with instruction on how to get to my email?  Rather they kept insisting that I migrate to icloud, and insisting that I had to meet computer operating system requirements that my old G4 could not meet.  In my opinion they were not honest.  They effectively created the preception that anyone using an older mac had to buy a new one and I think they knew what they were doing.  I heard someone say that ethics cannot be taught, I agree.  Thanks again Roger, I can now access my Mac Mail from alternative locations.

  • How Secure is File Vault?

I have to take my iMac in for servicing and am concerned about securing my data from prying eyes. I'm considering using file vault to encrypt my home folder but don't know if it will also encrypt my Keychain (I have 90+ passwords stored in the Keychain). Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.
    Mark

The last time I had a Mac in for servicing, I made a bootable clone (of my internal drive) onto an external hard drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner. Then I restarted from the external and did a +zero out data+ erase on the internal drive, followed by a fresh install of Tiger.
When I got it back I restarted from the external and cloned it back to the internal drive. I thought it was far simpler than worrying about security.
