How to access from Ubuntu PC to an external HD connected to Airport Extreme
Hi,
I have an external Hard drive connected via USB to my Airport Extreme.
I have a MacBook (of course) and also a PC under UBUNTU.
I can perfectly connect to this external HD from the Mac but I don't know how to do with the Ubuntu PC.
From Unbuntu:
1) I tried to "ping" the Airport: it's OK
2) I tried to "connect to a server": the Airport, nor the HD, is not seen
Can you help me ?
I am not sure what path I should be using in the script now that it needs to find the volume through the Airport.
If the volume is already mounted then the path will be in the format /Volumes/<name>/... where <name> is the name of the sharepoint as it appears on your Desktop.
If you're still unsure of the path, drag the relevant folder from your desktop into your script (or a blank AppleScript document). AppleScript Editor will ask if you want to copy the folder contents or an alias to the folder itself. Choose the 'Alias' option and you'll see the actual path to this folder appear in your script window.

You can't technically. iPads cannot directly read HDDs like a computer can.
You will need an app liie FileBrowser to do this. Of course all file operations will be done through the App itself.

Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire. -

You'll need a static Ip and a hostname, although it is easy to set up if you have a dynamic Ip too...
Creat a free hostname on "www.dyndns.com" (for example), open your AFP and FTP ports on your router, and then use sotware such as "Rumpus" for the FTP service and tell it what drive you want to share (it can be a network drive). For AFP, all you have to do is connect to the server from the finder, hitting "Go...Connect to Server.."
I've got my extreme drive shared globally and it works fine...just need some time and patience to set up the ports and hostnames...

Access to external drives connected to Airport Extreme via USB Hub
I have 2 computers connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station. I have a Belkin powered USB hub connected to the USB port on the Extreme. There is a Lacie hard drive, a USB printer and a Kingston flash drive connected to the USB hub.
The printer was connected using Bonjour and is working fine. The other devices connected to the USB hub aren't getting picked up. They did work at one point, but are no longer viewable from the computers (MAC Book and Windows XP). How can I re-configure the Extreme or my computers so that they'll work again?DLNA = Digital Living Network Alliance. DLNA works in a Server-Client fashion with the Server providing the means to stream audio/video files to the client. DLNA servers are also called media servers. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), with an attached USB HDD at best, can perform as a media storage device ... not as a server. You would still need a media server (either hardware or software) to perform this role.
For example, I use a software DLNA-compliant media server, called TwonkyServer. I run this server on one of my Mac minis. It gets its media files that are stored on a USB HDD attached to my 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). TwonkyServer then streams these video files to my Xbox 360 which performs as a media client/player. -
Access USB external HDD connected to Airport Extreme
Hi.
Today I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
Question:
There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.
I know the question is a little bit confusing, but if you need any additional info please let me know.

Slow streaming from external drive connected to Airport Extreme
In the last week or so, when I try to play videos stored on my Airport Extreme on my Apple TV, they are extremely slow to load. It takes about 10 minutes before they even play, and at various points throughout it will have to essentially buffer for the same amount of time. The problem seems limited to the Apple TV, though, as I have no problem playing the same videos directly in iTunes.
Has anyone else experienced this lately?Katie, I have had the same problem with both AIrport Extreme and a new TC.
Have you update the firmware to 7.4.1, if so downgrading back to 7.3.x fixes the problem for now.
I think there is something going on as a result of the 7.4.1 firmware upgrade. -

Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices. -

For your Windows laptop, you would access the drive like any other network share. The basic format is: \\<servername>\<sharename>, where, in this case, the servername is the base station name and the sharename is the name of the external drive. -

I've already imported video to my hard drive. I had it previously connected via firewire. It's there in an imovie 08. However, when I open up imovie in the "Event Library" panel, my hard drive has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point on it. Does anyone know how I can access this?
Do I have to choose "import" first and then copy the movie back into imovie? I think this would defeat the purpose of storing the footage on the external drive, right? I'm trying to make my first movie, so please be gentle if this is an easy question to answer. It's throwing me for a loop right now.
Thanks again!sorry, the hard drive is connected via USB to my airport extreme. Here's how i can look at the files:
Macintosh HD, under "shared" i select my hard drive, open it and then click on imovie events, then i can access the 19 different folders which contain multiple clips in each folder, along with an imovie thumbs file etc.
However, in imovie when create a new project, then click on import, it will ask me where i want to save the files, and on the drop down arrow, the only choice is my macintosh HD and I can't choose anything else. I really don't want to save them to my computer's hard drive if i don't have to. It seems there should be an easier way to do this, but i'm overlooking something. I just want to be able to make a movie with the clips that are already saved on my hard drive which is connected via airport extreme. Thanks again! -

Ending address: 172.16.22.254
Wireless Create a wireless network
Wireless network name Test1
wpa2 security
This is needed due to set ip address of device on this private network did not address NAT
Conneted Express ethernet port to Extreme wan port
All wired devices have internet access and i get a double nat status which ignore

How to set up both static and DHCP assigned addresses on an AirPort Extreme
I recently bought an AirPort Extreme to replace my failed Cisco/Linksys router.
I am having trouble figuring out how I can configure the Extreme to support the already static IP addresses on my network as well as assign IP addresses via DHCP to a few devices where static IPs are not supported, i.e., work laptop.
Additionally, when DHCP is turned on, are my only options the 10.0, 172.16, and 192.168? What if I am running something like 10.10 or 172.30?
I am far from green when setting up computer networks, but this AirPort Extreme is making me pull my hair out.
BTW, I have access to a number of computers running a number of OSes including Windows XP, 7, and 8, as well as Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.
The Mountain Lion or Windows 7 machine would be the preferred ones to configure the Extreme. I already have the AirPort Utility software running on them.
Any help would be appreciated.I have found the 'DHCP Reservations' option on the AirPort Extreme to be buggy. I seem to remember it causing IP conflicts for some reason. I think what I remember is that if the computer with the reservation was off, and the DHCP server then handed out that IP to another DHCP client, then there would be a conflict when the reserved IP computer was turned back on. Maybe it was an issue in ealier versions of the AE or OS X as the case may be, and maybe it's been corrected, but I've never bothered using it agian since the method I describe below has always worked without fail. Also, I'm guessing DHCP Reservations would work fine if one manually enters IPs outside of the DHCP range but in the AE 'DHCP Reservation Setup Assistant' the IP options provided are within the DHCP range which to me makes no sense and increases the potential for IP conflicts.
Here's what I do to setup a mixed environment of static and dynamic IPs on my network. It works like a charm and does not require the DHCP server (beyond the distribution of dynamic IPs to hosts using DHCP).
For machines on my network that are accepting services from the public network, I set them up with static IPs using the 'Manually' option (System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Configure IPv4). The settings for 'Router' IP address and 'DNS Server' IP address should both be set with your gateway/router LAN IP). Use an IP address below or above the DHCP range of adresses (in AE/Internet/DHCP/DHCP Beginning & Ending Address).
i.e. if my subnet is 10.0.1.1 and my DHCP range is 10.0.1.100 to 10.0.1.150, you could set the static IPs on your local hosts as 10.0.1.x where x = any number from 2 - 99 or from 151 - 200 as an example.
All other machines and devices that do not require static routing are setup as DHCP clients and get a dynamic IP from the AE. To me it's a simpler setup though it might take a little extra time to setup initially.

You may want to try reinstalling Mavericks. Airport Utility installed by Mavericks may no longer connect to your older AEBS (though I've not heard that.) Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from
the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is

Unfortunately, Apple has designed their routers to only extend or repeat the wireless signal from other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that the AirPort Extreme would be able to extend or repeat a wireless signal from another manufacturer's router.
I suppose that it could not hurt to try, but if the Extreme is still unopened, it might be a better idea to return the Extreme, get the information about the router at the neighbor's and then use a product from the same manufacurer that would be compatible to repeat or extend the wireless. -
How Do I Connect An Airport Extreme With Password to another Wireless Devic
We have a setup for two different wireless devices so that there are multiple locations that can get online, but the entire setup has no passwords assigned. We would like to assign passwords to both wireless devices so that only the appropriate people are getting online. How does one do this?
The first wireless device that connects directly to the modem from the phone company is a brand new Apple Airport Extreme. The computer that set up the device so that people can get a signal was from a PC that is directly connected to the Airport Extreme via an ethernet cable. Also connected to the Airport Extreme is an ethernet cable that goes (50-100ft) to another wireless device - by Netgear - which then sends out another signal to pick up wireless internet, which is the signal/network that I work from.
If we assign a password to the Airport Extreme, I'm guessing it will complete screw up the connection to the Netgear. How would that be dealt with? And, how could we then, if we wanted, set up a password for the Netgear as well. I've read some initial information on the user guide CD and online, but I don't know the terminology of whether these are networks or just wireless devices 'bridged' together, etc.
My biggest concern, is it works right now, but the owner of the devices wants to put passwords on it and I want to make sure we can keep it working even with passwords. Does anyone know how to easily set up passwords and can I do it from my computer even though they were initially set up by a PC? Or do I have to do it from the PC and if so, how, because I am completely a Mac person and am very unfamiliar with Windows. Open AirPort Utility.
Select your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a password scheme from the Wireless Security pop-up menu.
Enter the password all users will need in order to join this wireless network.

Also, are there different types of passwords and if so, what is the most reliable one so that we don't lose connections, time out or have any other quirks?
There are different types of wireless encryption. WPA2 and WPA are the most secure especially when used with a non-dictionary password. 128 bit WEP is passable in most situations but not very strong. 40/64 bit WEP is extremely weak.
There is really no general "reliability" issue with any of them. Some devices aren't compatible with some of them.
If when we assign a password to the Apple Airport Extreme and for some reason the Netgear stops working, how do we unassign/take away the password on the Airport to get it back to the current setup that we know does work?
Follow the procedure above but disable wireless encryption instead of enabling it.
