How to access hard drive on mac pro desktop from laptop?

I sold my Mac monitor and wireless keyboard. Now I want to sell my Mac Pro Desktop, but I need to wipe the hard drive first. How can I turn it on and access the drive from my Mac laptop?

It will show up as a drive, you can just access the drives on the desktop provided you turned on disk sharing. You can't access the "desktop".. If you had previously turned on screen sharing then you could use that via network connection.
If you can find the file that has preferences and then edit it then you can change to startup in Target disk mode. I do not know the file or how to edit it.

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.

Hi, I have 2, 600GB hard drives (Approximately) in my Mac Pro. 1 is for Windows Vista, the other is for Leopard. I'm running low on storage space on the Mac Side. I customized my Mac Pro when I bought it off the Apple Site.

Hard Drive for Mac Pro

I am looking for suggestions for another internal Hard Drive. I currently have 250GB and it is reaching its capacity.
I would like to have another 320-500GB drive. No raid configuration, just another hard drive mounted on my desktop to store my VHS and 8mm tape to DVD files.

If you are definitely going to have a non-RAID setup then I would look at (in no particular preferrential order)…
- Western Digital Caviar SE16 (low power usage, cool and quiet)
- Maxtor MaXLine III/Pro (fast, quiet and useable in RAID environments as well)
- Samsung SpinPoint (the king of quiet although can be a little slower than other drives)

Creating A New Boot Drive For Mac Pro Desktop

You don't need a large drive for the system. All you need to do is MOVE all the data and media files and every thing else, just leave the small 4GB /Users/myuseraccount/Library on the boot drive with the OS and apps. Everything else gets off loaded.
Leave your drive you ahve now as is for backup. Move data and clone the system.

What are all the hard drive icons on my desktop from app installations?

Most of the apps I have installed leave a new hard drive icon on my desktop, like these. Obviously the Macintosh HD is an good one to keep, but the others just keep accumulating and I find that to be a problem.
What are these?
What purpose do they serve?
Can I delete them?

How to Install New Internal Hard Drive on Mac Pro Laptop

My wifes 15 in Mid 2010 lap top running 10.8.4 has run out of drive space so we bought a new 1tb drive to install. We aren't sure where to go from here. The current contents are back up on Time Machine, but we also bought a small hard drive enclosure to take out the current hard drive and put it in the small enclosure.
So...do we install the new 1tb drive into the laptop and then try and start from the original hard drive that is now in an enclousure...then "Copy" or "Migrate" the material from the original hard drive to the new on? If so...how is that done?
Or do we try and "Copy" or "Migrate" the hard drive materials backed up on Time Machine? If so...how do we do that?

After formatting the new hdd, while still outside the mac, make a clone of your internal disk with CarbonCopyCloner on the new (still external) disk: CCC will ask you to install the Recovery Partition also, do that, and then the clone.
Then you eject the new drive, shutdown, and then you open the mac take the original disk out, and put the new one in.
On the OWC and other sites you will find instructions how to do the switch. Be very careful with the connectors inside .

Installing SATA (parallel?) hard drive in mac pro

is there a way to install my old ATA (is this called parallel) hard drive into my mac pro? i know i can't put it in one of the SATA slots, but how about the second drive bay or something?

While the screws fit into hard drive screw threads they're largely useless as the mounting holes for a 5.25" optical drive do not match that of a 3.5" hard drive. If you want to do any screwing in on the drive you will at a minimum require a 3.5" to 5.25" conversion bracket. Even then the mounting can be tricky do to the short cable and likely misalignment and the connector to that of the optical drive above it.
While the installation of a drive is not difficult the mounting of it, especially if you want it nicely done, can very well be.

I don't have permission to view content on hard drive in mac pro???

I no longer wanted to use my macbook anymore, it's a 2008 model if I remember correctly the white plastic version. However, I wanted to put the hard drive I have in it into my mac pro since I have two more available slots for storage. But after I put it in I went to go try viewing it's contents and it says
My mac pro os x version is 10.6.8 I'm not entirely sure what my macbook is running, but it's not yosemite, most likely a version of snow leopard.
Any ideas of what's going on? How can I get permission to view the contents?

Try opening Disk Utility and repairing permissions on the disk.
Next try select that disk in Finder and right click and select Get Info. Then go to Sharing and Permissions section and update/change it

Sorry if this has been asked. I purchased a used MAC Pro from a friend that needed money. The hard drive is too small to accommodate all the software on my other MAC so Migration Assistant will not work. I know how to put secondary drives in and format them. How do I replace the primary drive with a larger one? I don't know how to install a clean hard drive on a MAC and start from scratch. I am also planning on adding more RAM but I do know how to do that. Thanks

Pretty simple on the Mac Pro. Just pull the tray with the primary drive out (there are no cables to worry about) and then also pull out one of the secondary trays. Put a new drive in one of the secondary trays, then slide it into the primary slot, and put the former primary drive into the vacant secondary slot.
Then you just install a fresh copy of OS X from the install DVD. Just put it in the drive and hold down "C" at boot. Then follow the instructions on screen, and Migration Assistant will pick up the second drive and do it's thing.
Finally, Mac is not an acronym so doesn't need to be in all caps. It's short for Macintosh... Like the apple you can buy in a grocery store.

How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
You will need to first prep the new drive before the above. Follow this procedure:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Option button and be sure the selected partition scheme is set to GUID. Click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

Does the cache matter when choosing hard drive for mac pro?

I have been looking at all the specs to see about adding another hard drive to my mac pro. It is the 1st generation 2006 duel. I am getting a bit confused about the specs required! I don't understand cache? I think that mine is 8 cache, but a lot of the drives I am looking at are 16 or more. Is this important, have I got to stick to 8? Also does it matter about which Sata? i.e. 1, 11 or 111? and what does 'low profile' mean? Fitting it seems really easy, but buying the wrong drive seems easy as well!

Desktop drives are nominal 3.5" form factors, about one inch tall. They use a 12 Volt motor to spin the heavy platters around fairly fast.
Notebook rotating drives are mostly 2.5" form factor, now mostly around 9.5mm tall, possibly less. They have only 5 Volts available to spin the motor.
SATA 1, 2, 3 -- 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 is all specsmanship -- rotating drives cannot source data off the spinning platters faster than a burst of about 150 Mbytes/sec (1.2 Mbits/sec). So that part does not matter except that the 1.5 drives will be older models. Do note pay extra for better SATA speeds.
Rotation speed is very important, because that determines how fast the bits can fly past the read head. 5400 RPM is slower than 7200 RPM. A few 10,000 RPM drives are available, but they are too pricey for most users. I use 10,000 RPM drives in my Server. For Desktop computers, DO pay extra for 7200 over 5400. For notebook computers, a few 7200 RPM drives are available, but they sometimes run HOT.
Green drives, on the other hand, take great liberties with spin rates and sleeping, and are not suitable for production (great for Backups, but then they are not candidates for spares for your main drives). For these reasons, I do not own any Green Drives.
Large-enough cache size means the drive can read an entire track in one revolution, so that if you next ask for blocks near the original block you will not wait the average 4.166 milliseconds for the platter to spin halfway around to pick up new data (it is waiting, pre-fetched in the cache). So do not pay extra above about 8Mbytes, but use larger cache size as a tie breaker between equivalent models.

Swap Hard Drives Between Mac Pro's

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (Unibody - Late 2008) that has been upgraded from the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive, to a Seagate 750 GB SATA 16 MB cache 7200 rpm hard drive.
I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15" (SD - Mid 2009) that has the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive.
Both are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I will be selling my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro but would like to keep my larger hard drive.
Question
Can I simply swap the hard drive out of my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro and install it into the newer (2.66GHz) Mac Pro, without having to reinstall the Mac OS X software?
I no longer have any of my OS X install disks.
Will the 750 GB hard drive still perform the same in the newer Mac Pro, given that they are running the same OS?

From what I understand the USB/PCIe interfaces are (somewhat) device specific. But it depends on the particular vendor in question.
According to barefeats.com, regarding USB devices:
"...Our only concern was that it {the CalDigit adapter} only worked with CalDigit USB 3.0 enclosures like the AV Drive. They since updated the driver to "unlock it." In fact, all the USB 3.0 results posted above for non-Cadigit enclosures were done with the CalDigit PCIe USB 3.0 host adapter...."
So, for example, the Lacie PCIe adapters are "specific". Only works with their stuff. Originally the CalDigit PCIe adapter was the same: limited to use with their devices only. But they've altered that so that it is more generic. In fact, it was used to test the other USB 3.0 devices in the barefeats tests.
So the CalDigit card, at least, is a more flexible choice.
