"How to" access Macbook by ARD via Internet

I want to connect to a MacBook via Internet by ARD. The handbook is not very specific about this.
What I need is a "how to" handle the IP and NIC adresses to connect the remote MacBook with my administrator MacPro. Both Macs have routers.
Thanks
Helmut

Hi
If I've understood you correctly then you need to know/do certain things. At the MacBook site log into the router interface and open ports 5900 and 3283. Depending on the Router make, you may have to define an additional Firewall Rule. Forward external requests for these ports to the internal/private IP address of the MacBook. Ideally this should be fixed. Enable Remote Management on the MacBook and define what control options you want. You will need to know the external/public IP address - again this would be better if it was fixed. If it's not fixed you will need some way of finding out what it gets changed to. Generally a person at the MacBook end could tell you this via a simple phone call. How do they find this out? Either by logging into the router and and looking at the WAN Status or by launching a browser and using this url:
http://myipaddress.com
Once you know the IP address launch ARD > Scanner > Network Address from the pull down menu. Key in the IP address. Enter the admin name and password of the remote MacBook. There's no need to fiddle with the router or do anything else at the MacPro end AFAIK.
Alternatively and if you're using 10.5 or 10.6 you can select Connect to Server from the Go Menu and key in:
vnc://theexternal/publicipaddress
Supply the admin name and password. You could also do this via VPN if Router/Firewalls support it. In addition there are also ways of doing this that don't involve ARD. iChat's Share Screen feature for example. Searching the Forum should have brought up something more than half cooked solutions? This is one I quickly found:

  • Access files on mac via internet from winXP

    I set up a mac in the office as a file server. I have the public folder defined to be accessible via afp and smb.
    When I access it from home with my mac via "connect to server" and put in the servername.com which I defined with no-ip.com it works just fine. Also my filemaker databases and everything.
    However if I try to connect with a windowsxp machine I cannot get it to work. I tried
    afp://servername.com and smb://servername.com and smb\\servername.com to no avail.
    Any suggestions how this should work?

    than you. I wasn't sure what forum to post in. Since I am looking for a remote solution, and possibly apple remote desktop that offers hard drive access only, I thought this could be the appropiate forum. I wasn't sure if remote desktop (apple) offers access to the hard drive to hard drive solution without being forced or required to use the screen sharing/control feature. At any rate, thank you. i am not sure I am going to be able to fins asolution. I was thinking someone might tell me something about SSH, and maybe a third party app to use for dynamic DNS and an option to avoid port forwarding etc. Thank you for your time.

  • How to access macbook without password or disk

    I need to get into my old Macbook, and I cannot remember my password, and I don't have the startup disk.  How can I change the password in single user mode?  My old MacBook is a simple, white MacBook--nothing fancy, from August 2011.  I now have the MBPr, and when I got it, I never bothered to transfer anything because I was so excited about the new one.  Oops...  Thanks.

    I haven't tried this but it should work http://lifehacker.com/5681710/how-to-break-into-a-mac-and-prevent-it-from-happen ing-to-you

  • How to access the client PCs via RDP FROM Windows Server 2003

    Hopefully this is not an ignorant question, but every thread I've read focuses on client PCs not being able to access the terminal server. I have the opposite problem. I am working remotely and have full access to the servers (some of which are virtuals).
    I need to be able to connect to the various workstations, but I cannot.  Is this just a setting I have misconfigured?  Is there any software I can deploy to these PCs that will allow me to log in and update their workstations?
    Any help is sincerely appreciated.
    - Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
    Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
    You can able to take RDP for client system from server. But keep in mind that; client system can only allow 1 RDP session at a time for administrator purpose. For that you need to have permission for taking rdp session.
    Also you need to verify that “Remote Desktop Service” service is running and also need to verify the below thread as per snap.
    In addition, if you want to manage all the server and client system, then you can use Remote Desktop Connection Manager to manage all the client and server remotely.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • How to access files on server via VPN

    hey,
    i have set up all the VPN side of the server and is all working.
    Opened all ports for vpn services on my router etc.
    At work we have a situation that automatically logs into the server and opens files. This also puts the server under "shared" in the finder window.
    The question is how do i replicate seeing the files or the server under the shared area in finder as if we were at work?
    I have read other peoples posts and the only things i can see is about wide area bonjour. Is this what i need to setup?
    all help appreciated.

  • Why does "problem loading page" appear when i try to run firefox? I can access the relevent page via internet explorer but firefox cannot connect to the web/

    A few days ago Firefox stopped working when using shortcut or exe. file. The message http://en-gb.start3.mozilla.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official appears, although when i paste this address into internet explorer it works. What is preventing firefox from connecting?

    Actually, dchristie, your solution didn't help at all. If I wanted to use IE, I wouldn't have installed Firefox. IE is a good browser, but doesn't have features Firefox has. Also, when Firefox crashes windows can kill it and you can restart it no problem. When IE crashes, since it is so tightly integrated into windows, windows itself becomes unstable and you have to reboot.

  • How to access a sharepoint site via the REST API in Python?

    I have the following site:
    http://win-5a8pp4v402g/sharepoint_test/site_1/
    When I access this from the browser, it prompts me for the username and password and then works fine. However I am trying to do the same using the REST API in Python. I am using the requests library, and this is what I have done:
    import requests
    from requests.auth import HTTPBasicAuth
    USERNAME = "Administrator"
    PASSWORD = "password"
    response = requests.get("http://win-5a8pp4v402g/", auth=HTTPBasicAuth(USERNAME, PASSWORD))
    print response.status_code
    However I get a 401. I dont understand. What am I missing?

    Try adding the auhenticatig domain to the username.  That may help.

  • How to access rows in table via script

    I have a floating numerical field in a table that's populated by a database. When previewing it uses a sample XML file. The path to the field is:
    topmostSubform.Page.Content.Repeater.Table1.Row1.F11a
    That was obtained by copying the path from the script window. I have a numerical field which I hope to get the total into someday, but for debug purposes, in the calculate event I used the following:
    var row = topmostSubform.Page.Content.Repeater.Table1.Row1;
    row.all.length;
    This displays 28 which is the correct number of rows on the page. To try and sum all F11a fields I tried the following:
    var row = topmostSubform.Page.Content.Repeater.Table1.Row1;
    var sum = 0;
    for (var j=0;j<row.all.length;j++) sum += row[j].F11a.rawValue;
    sum;
    I don't get anything with that. Probably there's a script error. Could someone tell me what to do. Thanks

    Weird, I replied to this this afternoon from work but my reply doesn't seem to exist!
    Search in the help under "Calculating sums of fields", there are Javascript examples of calculating sums from within repeating subforms which is what table rows are.
    If you use Formcalc it's quite easy to do with wildcards. In the help search for "to perform calculations in a table" and there's a picture that shows how to use wildcards for calculating in tables. Basically it's along the lines of "sum (Table.Row[*].Field[*])
    So in your case the following might work:
    sum (topmostSubform.Page.Content.Repeater.Table1.Row1[*].F11a[*])

  • Remote access via internet to another macbook

    I would like to access my moms computer when she needs help sometimes via the internet. We both have Macbooks and high speed internet. Before I move away I can install whatever is necessary on her computer. Then if she has computer problems (as she often does) I can go onto her computer to sort it out. (Obviously, I will have to phone her to tell her to open up the computer). Is this a really involved thing that I am asking? I don't really know where to start. I have heard of remote desktop but after reviewing it, it sounds like it is much more than what I am looking for. Any info to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

    So why is system prefs saying, "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh [email protected]" at a shell command prompt."
    Is it just because it doesn't know its behind the router?
    I have tried telling finder to connect to server; vnc://65.95.40.34 and it just times out.
    I have also tried setting Chicken of the VNC to;
    HOST: 65.95.40.34
    Display: 0
    Password: (password that I set for login on her computer)
    This just times out eventually.
    I have also tried terminal both ways:
    "ssh [email protected]" and
    "ssh [email protected]"
    and it tells me "ssh: connect to host 65.95.40.34 port 22: Operation timed out"
    It take a minute or two using any of these methods before it tells me that its timed out.
    I have made sure that she has her computer opened up and turned on of course and the settings so it will wake if admin accesses remotely.
    Any ideas as to why this wouldn't work?
    Thanks for all the info.

  • How do I access a network camera from internet via 501

    Please understand that I am nowhere near being a network guru and I'm even farther away from being a PIX guru.
    I have a 501 PIX between my home network and the outside internet. The PIX is connected to a cable modem and pretty much keeps the same DHCP IP address as assigned by the ISP. I have an AXIS 207 IP camera connected to my home network on IP 192.168.1.11. For the sake of illustration say the address assigned by my cable ISP is 123.123.123.1.
    What I need to do is to access the camera from the internet. To do that I suppose I need to add some instructions to the PIX configuration but I don't know where to start...I have never even thought about communicating with devices on my home network through the internet. Can someone please provide some pointers or better yet the commands I need to add. The next question is how do I access the camera assuming the PIX is all set up. I don't think I use the camera's address and I don't know how the ISP address would get to a specific device such as the camera - maybe appending a port number or whatever to the IP address I type when trying to access the camera from the internet?
    The way the camera works on the internal network is you type in it's IP address in a browser window and the camera opens up a web page just like any url and the video is streamed to a window in the web page.
    I hope I've provided enough info to understand what I'm trying to do and I would be most appreciative for any help.
    thanks

    I tried installing the commands as provided but am running into issues. Here are the error messages:
    pixfirewall(config)# nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0
    ERROR: Duplicate NAT entry
    ERROR: fail to insert nat entry
    pixfirewall(config)# global (outside) 1 xxx.xxx.114.55
    ERROR: xxx.xxx.114.55-xxx.xxx.114.55 overlaps with outside interface address
    pixfirewall(config)#
    And here is a copy of my current configuration (including the code prior to entering the changes and the successful changes). Any Idea what needs to be done to fix things?
    thanks

  • How to get "Easy" access to my Time Capsule files via Internet?

    Hello,
    I like to have a easy solution to acces my TC 2TB via Internet.
    I saw there is an easy way, if you have an MobileMe Account - but this service is since Lion, icloud and iOS5 not longer avalible.
    Does anyone know how to get easy acces without DynDNS, FTP or other difficult solutions or does anyone knows a solution which will be avalible in the future?
    Thanks
    Flo

    Thanks for your fast answer.
    But as mentioned in THE NOTE my TC is a downstream router behind another router. The reason is that I am connected to the internet via Telekom entertain 16000 with an DSL/Modem/Router which one I need to connect my media Receiver.
    So is there a following solution which replaces the MobileMe Solution.
