How to access printing & hard drive from my PC via AEBS

Got my MacBook Pro connected to my new AirPort Extreme Base Station and every thing is up and running along with wireless printing and Back-Up hard drive. My son’s PC running XP is connected to the AirPort broadband signal just fine, except I haven’t figured out how to have the PC to access the AirPort connected printer and networked hard drive. So, anyone have any words of wisdom in this arena?
Regards,

The AEBSn shares a USB-attached hard drive using both Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) aka AppleShare, the same format used by Personal File Sharing or the OS X Server to share files, AND Samba, a network file-sharing service compatible with OS X, Windows and Linux. Shared drives must be formatted in either Mac HFS+, FAT16 or FAT32. NTFS-formatted drives won't work.
To access the shared drive from Windows, just bring up the network browser by double-clicking Network on the Desktop. The base station name should appear in the Network browser window.

  • How to access my hard drive over the internet?

    Hi,
I would like to be able to access my hard drive while I am away from my desk. I am not running OS X Server. How can I do this?
Also, I am behind an Airport Base Station. Which ports would I need to open up?
Besides my Firewall and my Administrator password, how else can I secure the access?
    thank you....

VPN does not allow you to control your computer remotely, you are probably thinking of VNC. A VPN essentially extends your local network so that you can access it remotely. You can control your host computer to more than you can control any other computer by accessing it over your LAN.
I still think a VPN is the best option, but it's not easy to install (MacOS X server has a VPN with a GUI built in). OpenVPN is a great option, and there are several GUI interfaces for it (look for these on www.versiontracker.com). This is best because it is secure and will allow you to access your entire hard drive.
Like I said in the last post, WebDAV is also an option. This is what a .Mac iDisk is. This will only allow you access a specific folder (or set of folders) that reside in the Apache (var/www) directory. Although you can always make an alias to the apache directory and keep it in your Documents folder.
A third option that I didn't state before because it's probably the least best is to use NFS to access your home computer. This will allow you to access your entire hard drive. The downside to this is that there is no encryption, nor a password. For security, it uses IP or domain addresses. So this is not an option unless you will to accessing your hard drive from a computer (or a few computers) with (a) static IP address(es).

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • How to read external hard-drive from all users

    Hello everybody !
I have a Lacie Porshe Design external hard-drive for my Mac.
I have 2 user accounts which both are "admin".
Since yesterday, when I plug my external hard-drive, I cannot read the files on it unless I'm on the first "admin" account. I want to read the files from all the users account. There's a little red stop sign on the files and it tells me I have not the permission to view the files when I'm on the second user account.
Why does it work only with the first "admin" account and not the second one ? How to I disable this ?
It worked perfectly yesterday and I have no idea why.
Thank you very much guys !

I am sorry for the confusion.
The technician fresh-installed all the programs needed on a session they created called admin. On it there is all the programs but nothing else.
In case of trouble with the programs and licenses, the techicians asked for us to leave this ADMIN session untouched and to do our project and personnals things on our own new session.
    So I got
ADMIN - only the programs installed by the technicians, admin status enable first
PERSONNAL - all my personnal files and the programs installed by the techicians, admin status enable later
When I read my Lacie Hard-Drive from the PERSONNAL account, I do not have the permission to read my old Time Machine backup files from my previous mac even thought the PERSONNAL account got the admin status enable. But when I read the Hard-Drive from the ADMIN account, I can read those files.
    Hopefully this is clearer.
Thank you for your time !

  • Linksys E4200: How to access USB hard drive remotely from Android phone or computer

    Hello.
I just purchased a Linksys e4200 router today along with a WD 2TB MyBook hard drive. My intent is to set these two up together so that i can share files on the hard drive with:
Computers on my home network ( 1 Windows 7 desktop wired, 1 windows 7 laptop wifi, 1 XP netbook wifi)
    Computers remotely over the internet
Smartphones (Android and Apple) on my home network
Smartphones (Android and Apple) remotely over the internet
    My questions are:
Can all of this be done with the E4200?
Has anyone in the communiyt forums set-up remote access for fileshare with smartphones?
What is the easiest way to set-up and configure this?
Does anyone have experience using the WD MyBook Essential (WDBACW002OHBK)? Does it work well with the E4200?
Thank you in advance for all responses and help.

    Hi,
Major concern in your case now, seems like is all about accessing the data from that Shared Hard Drive remotely over the internet....
For that very reason, we can use either of the two ways to access the shared Hard Drive or Network Hard Drive remotely....However, for both the ways, we need to have a public IP address coming in from the modem...(192.168.X.X....172.16.X.X....10.X.X.X...are examples for Private IP, rest all are public IP's)
One of the ways to get this done is through the WAN IP that you are getting from Modem on your connected Cisco Router's status page....Open the set up page with http://192.168.1.1 , go to Status tab - look out for WAN IP - should be a public IP address not a private one....,then so as to access it, you have type in http://wanip:sharename....
Other way round to do the same is via getting the WAN IP converted to the domain name, this is done via dynamic domain naming system (refer to http://TZO.org) in which we converts our WAN IP into a domain name, which will continue to update the ever changing public IP address (WAN IP) on the daily basis....then so as to access it, you have type in http://domainname:sharename.....

  • How to access internal hard drive with screen not working

    Veteran Mac user from Spain,
I am a graphic designer and i have a MacBook Pro 17 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz (Santa Rosa) which i purchased in October of 2007 along with a 23 inch Apple Cinema HD Display Monitor which i have hooked up to my MacBook when i am working at home. About 2 months ago the right hand ventilator started making a very loud noise but because i had a lot work on i did not have time to send it away to be fixed. Then about a month ago the fan stopped working and i was very concerned that my MacBook was going to overheat but to my surprise the temperature never rose above 60 degrees, so i continued to work and every thing seemed to be okay. But a couple of weeks ago i was online and the computer suddenly froze up and when i restarted it all i got was a black screen on both the MacBook and the Cinema Display Monitor. The hard disk seems to boot correctly and the keyboard on the MacBook also is responsive (volume, brightness controls, caps/number lock, etc… are all responsive and the retroilumination on the keyboard also works). So on reading up on the forums i discovered that the graphics card NVIDIA 8600M GT is in fact faulty. I called apple and explained the problem and they told me that i will also have to replace the logic board.
On discovering the problem i realised that it would take a while to be fixed and i would need another Mac to continue working. So last week last week i purchased a Mac Mini and hooked it up to my Cinema Display and everything is working fine, BUT i desperately need to access my work folder on my MacBook's internal drive.
Can anybody tell me how to transfer the files from my MacBook (late 2007) to my Mac Mini without the screen working on my MacBook?
If it helps, my MacBook is running Leopard 10.5.8 and the Mac Mini is running Lion 10.7.2. The Mac Mini has an Intel i5 processor 2.3 GHz.
I would really appreciate the help, it is very urgent and i need to find a very quick solution, clients depend on it.

Thank you very much for your swift response.
I am going to try the second option that you propose because as i mentioned in my first post, i had my MacBook Pro hooked up to my Apple Cinema HD Display monitor and both screens were black.
    Just one question…
Will the hard drive need an extrenal power source?
I am guessing that it will use the Mac Mini's power supply but i just want to make sure.
Thanks again! You have been most helpful.

  • How to access the hard drive in my Time Capsule via ethernet, not wireless

I have a new Netgear 802.11ac router with ethernet ports. I also have an older (4 years old) Time Capsule that I replaced with the new Netgear router. My iPhoto library was recently corrupted (long story there). I don't have a backup except on my Time Capsule. How do I access the Time Capsule's hard drive over ethernet so that I can copy the iPhoto Library off of it and onto my Thunderbolt external hard drive? It's the only chance I have to save years of photos (my iPhoto library is 258 Gb large). I don't want to do this wirelessly. I've tried using ethernet cable from the TC to my Macbook Pro and to one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear router, but to no avail. I'm sure it's got to be simple but I've almost given up trying different configurations.

Plug the TC directly into the netgear by ethernet.
Then do a factory reset. This will not harm your existing backups in any way.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Connect to the TC by wireless.. this is just to do the setup..
Put the TC in bridge mode.
The TC will now appear as a client in the Netgear and should be accessible.. if not there is something else going on.. the Netgear may not be working properly with the TC. It happens.
I am not sure what equipment you have.. but if you have a thunderbolt connected hard drive.. how are you then connecting by ethernet to the Netgear.. as I understand it, unless your hard disk has a thunderbolt passthough port.. and you have tested and found the ethernet does still work with the hard disk in the chain.
There is no reason you cannot do it direct to the TC if you have enough ports. But the TC should be reset as above so it is in router mode. That is the only way you can connect to it as otherwise it is bridged.

  • How do install windows hard drive (from dead pc) into boot camp partition

My Windows 7 desktop died recently, so I took the opportunity to buy a Mac Mini (latest version as of Feb 2012) as a replacement.  I want to transfer  the Windows 7 installation (from the dead PC) including all applications, accounts, settings, user files, etc to the Boot Camp Partition.   Can someone please provide the steps on how to perform the Win 7 migration to the Mac Mini.

    Just to clarify:
I want to install the Windows 7 installation from dead the PC into the Mac Mini's Boot Camp partition.
I installed the PC's hard drive into an enclosure and connected it to the Mac Mini via the USB port.
What I want to do is the following:
    1) Do a Windows 7 "fresh" install in the Mac Mini Boot Camp partition.
    2) Migrate all the applications installed on the  Windows 7 PC and their associated data.
    3) Migrate all user accounts and data.
Is there a tool that can transfer all applications and user accounts from the Windows 7 Hard Drive to the Boot Camp partition on the Mini?
Based on the documentation the Window Migration tool is Lion OS utility and does not perform a complete migration of all applications installed on the Windows machine.
    thank you.

  • How to create External Hard Drive from Internal Hard Drive?

For my Mac, I want to get a 250GB external Firewire Hard Drive. I know I can purchase one as is. However, it seems that money can be saved by purchasing an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure. Is this correct?
If so, would the internal hard drive be an IDE?
Is there an enclosure that will make this IDE drive a Firewire/USB external drive?
Should the enclosure have a fan, on/off button?
    Anything else to consider.
    Thanks,
    Herschel

    Hi Hershel.
    1) If you want to use the drive with both your PC and your Mac then you have two options. Either you format the drive in FAT32 (standard windows format) or you get hold of one of the utilities which allows you to read Mac HFS+ formatted disks on a PC (IMHO the better way to go). One disadvantage of using Fat 32 formatting for the drive is that you then won't actually be able to use it as an emergency "startup disk" for the Mac . The other problem is that Fat 32 can be problematic with large disks and files sometimes.
    2) Your iMac has both USB2 ports and firewire 400 ports. There is no advantage really in getting an enclosure with Firewire 800 , because your iMac is limited to Firewire 400 anyway. The drive you buy to insert in the enclosure won't have any effect on this.
    3) The reasons for getting a firewire capable enclosure for use with your Mac are that it is actually faster than USB2 (despite the higher rated speed of USB2) and because you can start up your Mac from an external FW drive, but not from an external USB2 drive. If you are formatting in Fat32 this won't be an issue because you won't be able to boot from it anyway.
    4) The business about "parallel" and "serial" drives relates to the type of bridge in the enclosure that you buy, not to whether you want to connect it to a PC or a mac. Some enclosures are designed to work with "SATA" drives - ie Serial. Some are designed to work with "regular" IDE / ATA drives (ie parallel).
Just to make this clearer , think about this as involving two links in a chain. THe first link is from the drive to the enclosure. The enclosure needs to have the right sort of INTERNAL connection for the drive you buy - either SATA or regular ATA - regular ATA enclosures are more common than SATA one but large drives are now easier to find with SATA interfaces than IDE ATA. A few enclosures can accept either type of drive, but they tend to cost more.
The second link is the EXTERNAL one from the enclosure to your computer. In your situation it sounds as if you ideally need one which has both Firewire 400 and USB2 connections. (THere are also some cases which provide am external SATA connection for connection to the computer, but you wouldn't be able to use this with your iMac as it has no external SATA port).
Try a Google for the IceCube Pleiades and you should be able to come up with prices in a place somewhere near you. At present I'm not sure which country you are in.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Pls how do I print a document from my tab via my hp photosmart D110b printer.

How do I print from my tab. I dont know how to connect the printer to my tab

    Hello @omalicha ,
    Welcome to the HP forum.
I understand that you are unsure of how to connect your tablet to your iPad.
This should be fairly simple as long as the printer is on the network.
All you need to do is go into the Google Play Store. Then search for HP ePrint.
The app is free. Once installed it should see your printer.
You just need to remember that you have to go into the ePrint app, then open the document, to print.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.
