How to Access time capsule backup data on Airport Extreme

Hi All,
Thank you in advance.
The Problem : One of our Mac Book Air was stolen and we have the MBA backed up on Airport Extreme.
Currently we don't have another MBA that can do a full restore. I just want to access the Airport Extreme Time Capsule Data and get few files that is in the backups.
I have been searching for a solution and still can't find a way to do this. It is just 1 set of files inside the backup.
Thank you again for all the help.
G

Hi LaPastenague
I went over the pondini.org website, however still I can't access other users data T
I can go and review my own data.
The Data is backed up ( shared ) on Time Capsule ( which means all the users in the same house uses this one single time capsule to backup )
http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
## We currently don't know what was the username or password the user was using.
I am also looking at the pondini.org and
"With Accounts:  this allows setting up separate accounts, each with its own password and folder.  You can set up accounts and passwords that correspond to the ones on your Mac (but passwords must be changed separately), and/or you can create different ones.  Each account may have permission to Read, or Read and Write, or Not allowed.  This is not recommended for use with Time Machine backups, as no single user can see everything on the disk(s).  That's especially important if there's a space problem -- you'd have to connect with each account in turn to see the whole picture.  The backups for each Mac are protected by the usual permissions anyway, so in most cases this option is overkill.  There are also a few minor differences in the content of some of the windows when selecting the backup destinations"
We are usuing this "With Accounts" settings

Reply back when you get the new device, but in short, you'll have to put your extreme in bridge mode and just connect the same wires as your current TC.

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • Time capsule not recognized by airport extreme - first time setup challenge

Air port utility not recognizing time capsule. We have airport extreme and time capsule (recent purchase to back up 2 wireless mac laptops and the G5 which is connected to the modem). Modem is conected to airport extreme and I connected the Time capsule via ethernet as I thought the speed would be 1GB and faster than wireless "n." Somehow now the airport extreme does not recognize the time capsule. In the network utility, airport is not listed, only ethernet and firewire. What steps should I take to enable time capsule to back up the laptops wirelessly as well as the G5 (non-wireless.) Thanks!

I would hold the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 5-10 seconds and I would wait to connect it to the AirPort Extreme to see if you can set it up. If you can access the Time Capsule with AirPort Utility then I would plug it into the AirPort Extreme and continue your setup.

  • Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses

Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

  • How to access Time Capsule USB Drive data remotely via iPad

How can I (with my iPad) remotely access some .xls files stored on a USB Pen Drive attached to my Time Capsule?

This is very difficult.. I have heard there is AFP file app for the ipad but haven't seen if it can work.. the normal file app for ipad is actually SMB based.. TC does not offer SMB to WAN.
If the files are small, cloud is your best choice.
If you really need access to the TC, then use vpn.. I believe there is a vpn function in the ipad.. get a vpn router and bridge the TC.. you should then be able to safely and securely connect and get files.

  • How to access time capsule with an old mac

I recently upgraded from an old 12" PowerBook G4 to one of the new MacBook Pros. I also purchased a Time Capsule, am using it as my wireless router, and have been making regular backups with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to send away my new MacBook because of an equipment failure even though I just got it three weeks ago (that's another story). So I'm back on my old PowerBook for the time being. I'd like to manually grab some files from the Time Capsule so I can pick up my work where I left off but I don't know how to access the Time Capsule with this PowerBook. It doesn't appear in my finder like it does on the MacBook. Can someone help me out? Thanks a lot!
    Brendan

pretty sure you need at least 10.4 to use your TC as a HD
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html
if you have 10.4, you would install this to gain access to yout TC:

  • Accessing Time Capsule backup from another Mac

My son's laptop failed, and I need to pull some files off of the time machine backup on our Time Capsule for him to use. Time Machine only lets me access MY backup. Is there any way, short of restoring his entire account onto my computer, to access individuals files for another user that are on the Time Capsule?
As an aside, this seems like a flaw in the way Time Machine works - there should be an easy option to access the directory for any data stored on the Time Capsule when used my multiple users.
    Thanks

  • Time Capsule backup data not available

My Time Capsule had been attempting a backup for over 12 hours without any progress. I killed it, deleted the partial file, and started the backup cycle again. It has now been successful for 6 times since, but I cannot access any data prior to 3 Janurary 2009, 1:25 AM.
The 'tick' marks for each of the previous backup dates show along the right edge, but they begin to dim from the most recent to the earliest dates and then the data will not show for anything prior to yesterday.
Anybody have a clue what is going on???
I have used the Finder to view the files on the hard drive and there seems to be data in them for the various dates, but when using the Time Capsule interface, they will not show.

  • How to access Time Capsule hard drive with out internet connection?

Basically I live in a four bedroom house. One of my roomates moved out who had the internet in there name. Now i dont have an internet access but I have the Time Capsule with a 2 TB hard drive that stores my whole itunes library. I have enough space on my Macbook Air to store my whole library. I'd like to move my whole iTunes library back to my computer and wipe the Time Capsule Clean.

If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
    Open Macintosh HD
Look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder named Data (unless you have renamed it) will appear to the right
Double click Data to mount the drive on the Mac's desktop
Open the drive on the desktop and you can drag/drop files over to the destination that you choose on the Mac.
Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive.

  • How to access Time Capsule 2013 disk from Windows 7

I have seen several (older) threads that suggest that you can access the Time Capsule disk from Windows 7 using Windows Explorer and navigating to \\Time-Capsule-Name.  However, I have tried this repeatedly and just cannot get it to work.
Could this be a bug or unsupported in the latest 2013 Time Capsule?
In Airport Utility, under Disks > File Sharing, I have Enable File Sharing checked.  The workgroup is WORKGROUP.
The IP address is 192.168.1.4.  I am able to ping it successfully; I just cannot access it through Windows Explorer.
Am I missing something?  Please help!

Are you running homegroup on the PC..??
That should definitely be turned off!!
    Homegroup can mess things up.
I would try with ipv6 off but that might make no difference at all.. leave it set to local-link if it doesn't do anything.
There was issues when the Gen4 came out with security. Windows uses too high an encryption level..
    See info here.
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/changing-file-encryption-settings-on-a-win dows-7-h.pageCd-storyboard,pageNum-5.html
Change to 40 or 56 bit encyrption.
Unfortunately some of the controls you think you are setting on the TC are not really being set at all.. eg I doubt you are actually changing the workgroup.. if possible though you should have disk access set to lowest level .. device password and you should also turn on guest account to read and write.. that usually solved access for me in earlier TC .. I haven't bought an AC for the moment.. because.. well I believe I have done my time on the war front. I bled out already on the bleeding edge.. time for you to do it and I can reap the benefits on the second hardware revision and about the 10th firmware update.
Other things I would try if the above don't work.
Factory reset and start over.. you moved the IP of the TC and that is unwise.
Do not worry about the various settings.. do the factory reset.. in full isolation from the internet. ie TC plugged into the windows computer. Nothing else in either..
Now try at the default IP of the TC..
    \\10.0.1.1
Beyond that you need another computer to try or some device. iOS would be fine... in normal situation you would test other protocols, eg ftp but TC offers only SMB and AFP.. there are no AFP clients for windows that I have heard of.. you might have success if you boot the PC from a linux live cd.. it should be able to read AFP even if it cannot write to it. But the SMB is more important. If linux can access with SMB protocol and windows cannot.. the issue is windws OS.
Or iOS devices have some AFP file browsers available but again just test with SMB.. most file browsers for iOS use SMB.. if other devices can manage SMB protocol to open files on the TC then the finger points very clearly to the PC as the trouble.. on the other hand if nothing can access SMB then the TC is faulty and should be replaced.

  • How to delete Time Capsule backups for old discs?

Does anyone know how I can delete a no longer needed backup for my old Powerbook and reclaim the disc space it's taking up? 1TB Time Capsule getting low on space, but I don't want to erase the whole drive, just the Powerbook backup.
I can't see it from the Time Machine interface, just the one for the MacBook I now use, but I can see it as a sparseimage in the FInder. The problem is that deleting the sparseimage from the Finder just doesn't work. Dialogue box states "Deleting…" and "0 items to be deleted" but stays open forever and the file never gets deleted.
Any help would be much appreciated as I'm driving myself nuts with this...

    ee601 wrote:
Ok, it's 4 hours now since deleting the sparsebundle with the TC connected directly, and the Trash dialogue window says "The operation can’t be completed because the item “bands” is in use." Does that give any clues?
    unfortunately not.
how comfy would you be to erase your TC's HD ? I mean, would you be willing to completely start over ? via airport utility, you have the option to erase your TC's HD, which of course would mean also to erase all other sparsebundles on it.
generally, TM backups to a TC should be only *one part* of an overall backup strategy. besides using TM to backup my machines to my TC, i make bootable clones of both regularly.
anyways, post back if you decide to +start over+ - the necessary steps can be provided ...
