How to access Time Capsule hard drive with out internet connection?

Basically I live in a four bedroom house. One of my roomates moved out who had the internet in there name. Now i dont have an internet access but I have the Time Capsule with a 2 TB hard drive that stores my whole itunes library. I have enough space on my Macbook Air to store my whole library. I'd like to move my whole iTunes library back to my computer and wipe the Time Capsule Clean.

If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
Open Macintosh HD
Look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder named Data (unless you have renamed it) will appear to the right
Double click Data to mount the drive on the Mac's desktop
Open the drive on the desktop and you can drag/drop files over to the destination that you choose on the Mac.
Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive.

If the TC is not the main router just bridge it.
Have you tried it with the TC bridged??
You need to describe the full network because we have no idea how all this is setup.

  • I cant access time capsule hard drive.

I cant access time capsule hard drive. Everything was working before but all of a sudden i get an error msg when double clicking on my network drive which states ' The local device name is already in use'. The time capsule wireless network works fine though. I am using Vista 64.

Reboot the entire network.. everything must go off.. all stuff off.
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. TC (maybe also working as router).. other network stuff.. clients.
Can vista now open the disk?
If not try doing it manually.. in windows explorer type the TC address \\10.0.1.1 for instance.. whatever IP it has. I just used default as example.
If no good, open the airport utility which I hope you have installed.
Make sure the TC name is short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Make sure workgroup is correct and guest access is on with read and write permissions.
If still no good.. press and hold the reset.. redo the setup.
Later TC firmware is useless for windows users.. the best was 7.5.2 which you should go back to.
Do you have other clients using the TC? Are they all ok?
vista.. shudder.. has one virtue.. it made me give up windows and move to Mac OS.

  • Can'n access to my time capsule hard drive with my windows vista pc

    Hi there,
    I just bought a 2T time capsule.
Set up it is ok as my home network and works perfectly.
However i can't access it (reading or writing) with my windows vista pc, it asks me for a username and password.
how can I escape it and have direct access ?
    thx

Give it admin as username and public as the password unless you changed the default.
I recommend you load the airport utility for windows onto the vista pc. Bonjour helps windows to discover Apple network devices and access them.
You might also need to turn off firewall in the vista machine. At least make sure it is set to home, not work or public.
In the TC itself using SMB compatible names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
And on the file sharing page set guest account to read and write access.

  • Accessing my Time Capsule hard drive over the internet via iCloud doesn't work.

    Hi Everyone,
I have an iCloud account and read recently, that it is possible to acces the hard drive of an Time Capsule over the internet, if "Back to my Mac" is activated on my MacBook an the Time Capsule.
I updated the Time Capsule to Firmware Version 7.6.1 and the Airport Utility to version 6. Actually the Time Capsule HDD is displayes in Finder's Sidebar, when I'm using a forreign internet connection. But when I click on it an error message tells me that a connection to the server (I assume server=Time Capsule) cannot be established. Funnily enough I can access the HDD of my iMac at home.
The Time Capsule network setting is "Bridge Mode" Since I can't deactivate the DNS functionality of my router/mode, an easybox 803 A, unfortunately which I cannot replace, because it is also used for hosting the telephone.
Does anybody have an idea, where the problem could be? Wrong settings in the Time Capsule config or maybe the blocking by the router?
    Thank you all in advance,
    Markus
Please consider, that I have absolutely no idea of networking.

I don't know exactly how, but I got it working. I will try to explain, what I did.
    1. I used the easybox as DHCP-Server an set the TC to Bridge Mode.
    2. Then I gave the TC a fixed IP in the easbybox menu by using it's MAC-address (It seems that the address range has to be either 192.168.X.Y or 10.0.X.Y to make the TC accessable later).
    3. I made the TC a DHCP-Server (DHCP only, not also NAT). The IP addess range of the TC starts after it's own IP adress (10.0.0.111) and ends at (10.0.0.250). The IP range of the easybox starts with 10.0.0.1 (it's own) and end with the TC's (10.0.0.111).
    4. Then the Airport Utility told me that if I want to share an DHCP range the TC has to be set to a fixed IP setting, which I set up, leaving the IP-address 10.0.0.111 and the Router IP 10.0.0.1 (the easyboxs').
    5. Then it worked in my case. Since I don't even know what I did, I'm not shure if it workes under other circumstances.
There are of course many variables. Such as the type of the router and the TC or the kind of the internet connection.

  • How to access Time Capsule USB Drive data remotely via iPad

How can I (with my iPad) remotely access some .xls files stored on a USB Pen Drive attached to my Time Capsule?

This is very difficult.. I have heard there is AFP file app for the ipad but haven't seen if it can work.. the normal file app for ipad is actually SMB based.. TC does not offer SMB to WAN.
If the files are small, cloud is your best choice.
If you really need access to the TC, then use vpn.. I believe there is a vpn function in the ipad.. get a vpn router and bridge the TC.. you should then be able to safely and securely connect and get files.

  • How to wipe Time Capsule hard drive, while leaving all settings intact?

I have a 1TB TC which has a 500GB volume on it containing photos, music etc which users on my home network all use. The remaining 500GB is now full, with 3 sparsebundles; one backup for each of the macs in our house.
Recently, Time Machine on my MBP returns the error saying that "backup volume not available" or words to that effect. The other macs still backup fine using TM.
I would like to completely clear the TC drive, and start again with my backups. I'm going to attach a USB drive to the TC for shared files etc. I have up to date bootable clones of all the macs, so am happy to wipe the TC, save for all the settings on it.
What's the best way of going about this please? Is it simply to delete the sparsebundles from the Finder, or is there a better way of doing it?
    Thanks

AirPort Utility has an "erase" function in the Disks panel, Disks tab. If your Time Capsule disk really is partitioned into two volumes, you'll apparently have to select the partition you want to erase.
If you want to revert to one partition on your Time Capsule drive, I'll guess that you'll have to use the same technique you used to partition it in the first place.

  • How to reset Time Capsule Hard Drive?

    Upgraded to Mountain Lion.
    Have Airport Utility 6.x
Have a 2 TB Time Capsule, partioned to 1 TB disk and 1TB Time Machine Backup when I originally set it up.
Removed all files from te 1TB disk and cannot re-partion the disk to use the entier 2TB.  Cannot even see the 1TB back up with Disk Utility.
    Thoughts on how to reset?

So, the disk utility only shows the 1TB partition....bizarre.

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • WiFi bandwidth required to access Time Capsule hard disk

    Hey all,
Recently I moved, switched, houses. In this new house I have put my Time Capsule in the living room, and my computer is in the bedroom.
Ever since I did that, I had troubles accessing Time Capsule hard drive. It would often get disconnected, Time Machine could not "find backup disk", streaming video was not working, and more.
At first I thought that in the move I managed to bump TC a bit too hard and that maybe hard drive itself was damaged. Then I moved my MBP to kitchen, to do some work there (kitchen overlooks living room, there is a direct visual link to TC from there, no walls in between).
Taaa-daaaa! Connection to Time Capsule and the hard drive inside was perfect again.
However, all of the WiFi signal indicators, on both my Mac and other iOS devices are full when I am in my bedroom. The signal is therefore strong enough to make these devices think there is a 5/5 signal quality. But obviously that is wrong signaling. Not even Air Port utiliy gave any clues that even tho WiFi signal was 5/5 the actual bandwidth was not even close sufficient for optimal access to Time Capsule's hard disk. Which is just silly.
Dear Apple, would it be possible to implement some sort of speed check into Air Port Utility which actually checks _REAL_ state of bandwidth and then advises what to do; "Please move closer to the Time Capsule Basestation, bandwidth is too low to access".
I will say it again; the WiFi indicators are all 5/5, and everything regarding regular internet access and similar works awesome. But connection to hard disk obviously requires epic signal strength and no software indicates that.

If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
    Open Macintosh HD

Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.
When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network.
How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?
Could I possibly connect via USB?
    No.

  • HT1178 How do I encrypt my Time Capsule hard drive?

I would like to secure my Time Capsule hard drive.  How do i go about encrypting it?

You cannot access the TC directly.. USB cannot be plugged into a computer.. It is for now and forevermore a network drive.
    Read Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
He covers how to create a DMG file which is a file that works as a virtual disk.
This has limitations although from your point of view it is probably good. Only one computer can access the dmg at a time. That includes multiple users on the same computer. So it is only mounted in one place and for one user.
You can also do the same thing with a sparsebundle although I am not sure if there is any advantage over dmg files.
    http://alex.seeholzer.de/2012/09/setting-up-smbafpcifs-network-drive-for-time-ma chine-on-osx-10-8-mountain-lion/
There is no need to make it usable by Time Machine. You simply use Sparsebundle as DMG.. it is just that it might co-exist with the TM backup better.
You can set fixed size to the sparsebundle.. or DMG files.
You can then mount the file on your computer.
Please note that storing files in encrypted format on the TC makes backing them up a pain.. figure out how you intend to do this.. Time Machine cannot backup network drives. And most backup software will have issues with encypted files.. unless you have them mounted in a way you can read.

  • How stream music from Time-Capsules hard drive via iPhone and AirPlay without any computer turned on?

Is there a possibility to stream music stored on my time-capsules hard drive directly to my iPhone and then ask the iPhone the send the music (in real-time) via AirPlay to my AirPlay compatible speakers, without having ANY computer turned on? I know that the Sonos system managed this simple task, but Apple? Any news in iOS 4.3 or 5 maybe.

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.

  • Playing media files from Time Capsule hard drive

    Hello folks,
I am using my 3TB Time Capsule to host all of my video files, most of which are MKV files. I also have an external hard drive connected to the USB port on Time Capsule and there are few video files on it as well.
I am using Time Capsule as a router sitting between the cable modem (WAN) and my locan network (LAN). I have an Argosy HV355T digital media player hooked up to my home theater and TV via HDMI. It is connected to Time Capsule via Ethernet.
On Argosy media player, I am able to connect to Time Capsule (login is successful) but I can neither see the hard drives nor their contents.
When I connect the external hard drive to the USB port on Argosy, the hard drive is recognized and files from it can be read and played. Thus I have ruled out the possibility of Argosy being unable to read Mac formats.
I try to use uPnP on Argosy to connect as uPnP client to Time Capsule, but nothing happens. I thought uPnP is turned ON by default on Time Capsule.
Why am I not able to see the Time Capsule hard drive from my media player?
What am I missing in my setup?
Do I need to install a media server device to read files from hard drives and storage, and stream to media player (Argosy)?
How are you folks using Time Capsule to play video from its hard drive on to TV?
    Thanks.

The TC has no upnp.. no Apple device does.. Apple refused to join and went off in a huff, sat in the corner and created their own.. NAT-PMP.. which as you can imagine.. doesn't work with anything else but Apple stuff.
So first issue.. no upnp but that isn't a biggie.
SMB file protocol which the rest of the world uses.. has rules which Apple also breaks.
Make sure your TC is setup with all short names. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
On the file sharing page of the airport utility.. (you may need to use 5.6 from Mac or Windows), ensure that you set a workgroup.. generally now WORKGROUP. And make sure you turn on the guest account to full read and write permissions.
It would be good to ensure a normal windows computer can access the TC..
In windows explorer type in the address bar
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you replace with actual name or IP).
I do not know the Argosy player but I will look it up.
My hacked ATV1 can see and play files from the TC. That is running XMBC of course.

  • Time capsule Hard drive mounting

With multable users logged on to a single laptop. Only one user can see time capsule Hard drive content .  you have to log other users off., or de-mount the time capsule of the other users. this seems not right. Why

Hey....I got my TC up in going 1-2-3. Getting my wireless router and time machine going was a snap. I could not figure out how to use it as a hard drive. I was able to see the TC as a shared device (open up your hard drive, it is displayed on the left column) but I was denied access.
After I updated my system software, the problem went away. Up to date, meaning run software update and make sure it is up to date. Also, I am running Leopard, I would think TC is geared towards that. Also....I suggest restarting all your equipment. Your TC, computer and router.
I hope that made sense. Time capsule is now doing what I expected it to do. I am currently looking into web options with it.
