This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.

There isn't really a way to "save" photos to iCloud currently with non-beta software.
iCloud is involved with photos in 2 ways -- backup and Photo Stream.
Backup of an iOS device includes Camera Roll photos but they cannot be viewed at iCloud.com -- the backup can only be used when doing a restore of an iOS device.
Photo Stream photos also cannot be viewed at iCloud.com; Photo Stream is designed as a method of transferring photos from one device to another and is not designed to store the photos. More info http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
There is a new feature -- "iCloud Photo Library" -- coming sometime after the iOS 8 release next week: http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/12/apple-demotes-icloud-photo-library-beta/

To view Photo Stream, install iCloud Control Panel > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455
Then, open Control Panel > Network and Internet > iCloud, log in with your Apple ID, and mark Photo Stream. Then, press Options button to see which the Photo Stream folders are, so you just have to access to those folders depending on if you want to see Photo Stream photos or upload them

On a Mac you access your Photo Stream in either iPhoto or Aperture. Quotes below are from iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ
How do I turn on My Photo Stream?
After you update your devices and set up your iCloud account, you can easily turn on My Photo Stream on any of your devices:
iOS devices: Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos (or Photo Stream in iOS 6), then turn on My Photo Stream.
    Mac:
Go to Apple () > System Preferences > iCloud.
Select the checkbox for Photos (or Photo Stream).
Click the Options button and make sure that My Photo Stream is selected.
Open the app that you want to use with Photo Stream (iPhoto or Aperture) and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on in that app. You can also adjust your My Photo Stream settings in iPhoto or Aperture Preferences.
How do I view My Photo Stream?
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Your photos will appear in the My Photo Stream album in the Photos app. If you're using iOS, you can find your photos by tapping the Photo Stream tab, then tapping the My Photo Stream album. In iOS 5, your photos are in the Photo Stream album.
Mac: Your photos appear in the Shared albums section under iCloud in iPhoto 9.5 or Aperture 3.5. In earlier versions of iPhoto and Aperture, your photos appear in the Photo Stream section. In iPhoto 9.4 or later or in Aperture 3.4 or later, open the My Photo Stream album.
PC using Windows 8.1: From the Start screen, click the down arrow in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud Photos app.
PC using Windows 8: From the Start screen, select iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.0 to 2.12).
PC using Windows 7: Click the Windows Start button, then click Pictures. Click iCloud Photos or Photo Stream under the Favorites menu in the panel on the left. Double-click My Photo Stream to view your photos.
Apple TV: After signing in with your iCloud account, you can view your photos by choosing iCloud Photos or Photo Stream from the main menu (or selecting Internet > Photo Stream in Apple TV Software Update 5.0).

  • I need specifics on how iCloud shares my photo stream

So my iTunes account is where I bought most of the music my entire family listens to, and they are authorized to play that music on their own devices, even when they're signed into their own iTunes accounts. Now that doesn't make sense for them to access my photo stream pics, but I'm still curious (and a little paranoid) if they get them shared to their computers and AppleTV. How does the photo stream exactly work?  I want them to be shared with my MacBook Air (which is signed into the same Apple account as my phone). They won't be shared to my parents' appleTV photo stream if I've previously signed on before will they? I seem to remember that happening once; I am not signed in there now, plus I'm on a different internet connection. I just need some detail on how my iCloud account decides which devices get shared files.
How can I view all connected devices to my iCloud account?

As long as the other devices/computers/Apple TV's are not signed into your iCloud account, they will not have access to your my photo stream photos.  If you are signed into your iCloud account on your parent's Apple TV, you just need to make sure you go back into settings on it and sign out to ensure your photo stream is not visible on it.
Shared photo streams, of course, will only be shared with the people you invite to subscribe to them.  And you can add or remove subscribers from shared streams that you own at any time.
Your iTunes account is entirely separate (even if it is using the same ID as your iCloud account).  Even if their devices are authorized to play content purchased with your iTuens ID, or their devices or Apple TV are signed into your iTunes ID, this does not give them access to your photo stream.  Only being signed into your iCloud account does this.

cannot work out how to access my photos on icloud or on my pc?

You cannot view Photos stored on your iCloud by visiting iCloud.com but to view iCloud Photos on your Computer you will need iCloud Control Panel for Windows to be downloaded and installed on your computer and Enable Photostream on your  iOS Device. For more details on how to Enable PhotoStream and use iCloud Control Panel go through the link below.

By default, photos are automatically downloaded to the My Photo Stream folder inside the Photo Stream album in your Pictures library, and uploaded from the Uploads folder inside the Photo Stream album in your Pictures library.

  • When I forgot my password for home screen and it disabled my iPod, i had to reset my iPod. My iCloud had saved all of my data such as photos in storage or something. But I do not know how to access these photos. Any ideas?

How do i access my photos that were saved in icloud storage from before i had to reset everything. I know the photos can still somehow be accessed because icloud showed that space was being taken up for photos straight after i had reset the device and there were no photos there on the device at the time. So any ideas on how to access these photos from icloud? Any help very much appreciated, thanks.
