How to activate ios 7.0 from a 7.1 iCloud image

I bought a new Iphone 5S, and I want to activate it by restoring contents from my existing Iphone 5.
The problem is:
The new iPhone 5S is shipped with IOS 7.0.? and the restore image in ithe Cloud is 7.1, which apparently is not backwards compatible.
I'm stuck:
I cannot upgrade the IOS on the new iPhone before it is activated.
I cannot activate the new iPhone through a restore from the old iPhone.
I've given it a try for a week now, but Apple seems reluctant to help. It's a pity, because it's a new phone bought with good money.

Actually, what you need to do is this:
Activate & then update the new phone to iOS 7.1. Once done: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You'll now be able to restore it using your old backup.
Peck's post won't help you, as you need to update the phone first, then erase it.

That means you phone is not an iPhone 3G - probably a 3GS, which can run iOS 6
Identifying iPhone models
Most likely your phone was previously hacked to carrier unlock. When you updated/restored your phone in iTunes, the hack was removed and the phone re-locked to its original carrier. It will now activate and operate only with that carrier, using their SIM card.

has seemed to have hosed things. Calendars and
Address Book seem to work fine. Notes are not

Tried openning and closing Notes on my Macs multiple
times with no results. Waited for nearly 20 minutes with
no update to Notes on my Mac.
As a quick check, stuck a bogus appointment in Calendar
on my iPhone and a bogus addition to my Address Book
and they were pushed almost immediately to my Mac.
Update:
Logged into icloud.com account and found that Notes
has not pushed data to iCloud. So, seems like iOS 6
problem or an iCloud problem.

You can't store photos in icloud, except as part of an ios backup. You must sync photos to a computer for archiving, then you can delete the photos from the device.

You put them in your Dropbox folder and then open them from your Dropbox app on iOS into your iOS iWork apps. That's puts them into iCloud, including the icloud.com webpage.
That certainly is not the official solution but the official Apple is silent on how to achieve this.

iCloud will only backup photos in your camera roll as part of your iPhone backup (where they can only be later restored to your phone, not viewed separately). It will also add them to photo stream in iCloud, but onkly for 30 days. You can't use iCloud to permanently back up your photos. Meanwhile on my mac book pro, the "icloud" contact is still spinning like its trying to update the rest of the missing contacts. I have let the computer run for 2 days straight and still no progress. Is there a limit to how many contacts I store on "iCloud" I have upgraded to the extra 25 gigs per year. If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it, because its also slowing down my mac book pro significantly causing it hard to do any other task on my computer....Any advice or help would be again greatly appreciated.

On the surface, it doesn't sound like you're reaching a limit in the number of contacts you can have.
I would first create a contacts archive (file >> export) for a backup. Then, go to system preferences >> icloud and uncheck contacts. Reboot. Return to those preferences and recheck contacts.
Also, review http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4489 just in case you have some contact cards that are reaching a different limitation.

IOS 8 was automatically downloaded to my iPhone 5S. I didn't realize that was going to happen (I discovered since that I had automatic downloads set to "yes"). I have not installed the download of IOS 8; and I don't want to, at least not yet. But that install module is taking up several GBs of my memory and I would like to delete it. However, I can't figure out how to do that.

Hello, flowerpet1. Thank you for your reply. Interestingly, your instructions worked on my iPad Mini, where I had the same problem. The update module was listed under "Usage" and I was able to delete it. Although I still have the red circle with "1" in it over my Settings icon on the home page, the status under Software Update is now "Download and Install" instead of just "Install". Also, the available storage on the Usage screen has increased by about 4.2 GB.
On my iPhone 5S, however, I'm not quite sure what the situation is now. The IOS 8 update module does not show under "Usage". However, the status under Software Update has also changed to "Download and Install" instead of just "Install"--but without my doing anything to the phone. Maybe the update file was removed from the phone when I removed it from the iPad. I don't remember what the available storage was before, so I don't know if I recouped any space.

How to get calendars and notes from my iPhone into iCloud?

yesterday I got a new MacBook Pro Retina at work. This upgrade me to OSX 10.8 from 10.6, so I planned to use iCloud to sync my iPhone 5 and my Mac this way. So far I synced the devices manually via iTunes.
However, so far I only got Contacts to sync with iCloud correctly. Calendars and notes just don't do it, although their sync is turned on on the iPhone as well as on the Mac.
All my attempts to get it to work obviously destroyed the possibility to sync calendars via iTunes - after a sync there is just nothing showing up in Calendar. This is really bad as now I can only access my calendars via the iPhone.
Since my iPhone now contains the most recent calendar and note data the question is even more simple: how can I get these data from my iPhone into iClous so they will also sync with my Mac (and from then on on all devices)?
It doesn't work by just turning calendar sync on on the iPhone. When I do this, I now see two calendar groups "From my Mac" and "From iCloud". Great, but what I want is to replace "From iCloud" with "From my Mac".
I have already reset iCloud, but this didn't help either.
I'm close to desperation, so any hints are very much appreciated!

Installing Maverick on my Mac lost almost all of the calendar entries. They are still on my iPhone and new entries move freely to both devices via iCloud. How do I get the entries from my iPhone to iCloud without losing them from iPhone?

Like many others after I installed Maverick I found that all the calendar history has been lost and most of the forward info has also been lost. Also in order to get calendar, contacts and notes to sync with the iPhone I have had to move to iCloud. Contacts and notes sync fine. new calendar entries sync ok. My iPhone has all the calendar entries that were on the Mac before I installed Maverick. So far iCloud has not overwritten them nor have they synced onto iCloud.
How can I get all the entries from my iPhone onto iCloud, without losing the only copy of my calendar from my iPhone?
Thanks Apple for deciding to take over my privacy. I do not want this data stored on a US based server. Fortunately Mail still syncs via my own email provider. I guess Apple will find a way to stop that soon too!

It seems you are experiencing an issue with contact syncing and management. It seems you've removed an email account which contained a number of contacts that are not associated with your iCloud account. You may want to consider importing the contacts from the email account you removed. You can do it easily by following the steps in this article:
iCloud: Import a vCard
You can import an electronic business card, also called a vCard, into iCloud Contacts. If the vCard contains contact information for more than one person, each contact becomes a separate entry.
In iCloud Contacts, choose Import vCard from the Action pop-up menu , which appears at the bottom of the All Contacts list or a list of group contacts
Select a vCard to import.
The contacts from the vCard are added to the All Contacts group in Contacts. You can add the contacts to any other group by dragging them to the desired group.

Welcome to the Apple community.
If you deleted your contacts from your contacts app, they will also be deleted in iCloud.
However if you deleted your account or simply turned contacts syncing off, you should be able to log back into your account or re-enable contacts syncing and they would repopulate your contacts app.
Could you perhaps tell us which of these you have done.
