How to add a partition for Windows XP

Hi, I recently received my T410 with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like it to be a dual-boot system for Windows 7 and XP.
I had hoped to be able to create a new primary partition after shrinking the Win7 partition. However, it looks like my system already came with three primary partitions. They are
Volume, Layout, Type, File System, Status
Lenovo_Recovery (Q, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (Primary Partition)
SYSTEM_DRV, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Windows7_OS (C, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
1. Does SYSTEM_DRV need to be a primary partition?
2. Since it looks like SYSTEM_DRV is just the system drivers, is it possible for me to either (a) change that partition to a logical drive partition or (b) move those files to a folder in the Windows7_OS partition? Then I am assuming that will free up a primary partition for XP and I can carry on with installing XP on that partition.
3. If yes to question 2, what steps do I need to take to do either (a) or (b)?
The steps I am currently following for making it a dual-boot system are here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html, and http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/67236-problems-dual-boot-win-7-win-xp.html. They don't address they case where the computer already has three primary partitions, unfortunately; and I figure this is more of a Lenovo question rather than a question for that forum.
Thanks for your help.

not to put you off on what you're about to do, but depending on what version of 7 you have, pro and ultimate have an option to install a full copy of xp pro sp3 in a virtual machine within windows 7.  it will integrate windows 7 files into it so you can access them.  and it it actually is a full version of xp.  you allocate system memory for it to run and you can either have it set to shut down which will free up the resources or hibernate which won't.  although it loads much faster from hibernate.
before you do anything, i would burn restore discs in case something gets screwed.  make sure you have restore points set.

    iMac model identifier  iMac 14,1
i installed boot camp windows 7  and it works perfectly, after i tried to create two partition using disk utility  for windows 7 (ms-dos) format because i really want to separate my files on other partition instead of everything on Boot Camp drive.  after i restart choosing windows OS i cannot go back to windows 7.
i hold option on the keyboard but does not show window 7 so i went back to Apple ox s , found my boot camp hd on the desktop with files in it.  checked boot camp assistance showing
" The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows. "
i read alot of article about but i don't seem to understand much about
i understand alot of people created these kind of topics
please if someone can help me solve this problem again

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have an Early 2008 Mac Pro. You have the specs that your Mac Pro needs for more memory > https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433#4 As you can read, that computer should have come with 2 GB of memory.
You can buy memory at OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#800-memory Those sell compatible memory with all Macs. You can use another memory, but you can be sure that the memory that these brands sell are compatible

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
you can use WinClone for this http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ and in here http://www.twocanoes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=515 you find a how-to.
(Topic: My current Windows partition is the wrong size, and I want to make it larger. How do I do this?)
Other people have used CampTune http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ successfully.
Prior to doing this you should make/have a backup of your OSX and Windows files for safety.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one which has already been described is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:

Someone please tell me what does this all mean and tell me how to make the error go away

    Hello akl88066
To repair the Macintosh volume, you will need to boot and make the repairs from the install disk as described in the link below!

  • Partition for Windows XP. Please help.

I am going to install Windows XP using BootCamp on my MacBook. How large should the partition for XP be? Is it enough with 5GB? I will not install any extra programs for XP.

Try searching or asking in the Boot Camp Public Beta forum. You should find useful advice there.

  • HOW TO: Add /manipulate columns for a GridControl

HOW TO: Add /manipulate columns for a GridControl when the columns (attributes) are from different entity objects.
This HOWTO describes the basic steps of using attributes from different entity objects for a GridControl.
One way you can create a GridControl which contain attributes from different entity objects is to create a view object and base it on the entity objects which contain
    the desired attributes.
    Here are the basic steps:
1.Create a new view object (or use an existing view object) by selecting File>New from the menu, clicking the Business Components tab and double-clicking
    on the View Object icon.
2.In the View Object wizard change the name to something meaningful.
3.Select the entity objects you will base your view object on.
4.Nivigate to the attribute screen and select the attributes you would like to include in your view object from each entity object. At this point you can also create
a new attribute by clicking the "New" button. The new attribute can be a concatenation of other attributes, derived from a calculation etc.
5.In the query panel of the View Object wizard, click "Expert mode" and enter a query statement. You write complex queries such as decoding a set of attribute
    values.
6.Add your newly to your newly created view object to the application module by double-clicking on the application module in the navigation pane and selecting
your view object from the list.
    7.Create a new row set.
8.Bind row set to a query by editing their queryinfo property and selecting your view object and its attributes from the queryInfo pane.
9.Create a GridControl and bind it to the row set by editing the dataItemName property of the GridControl. Since the GridControl is bound at the row set level
all of the related attributes are automatically added.

    Michael,
Are you intending this as a commercial solution or a work around?
To take an existing equivalent, one would build a view in the database tailored for each grid in an Oracle Forms application. Or a separate query layered over tables for each form/grid in a Delphi or Access application? Even if it is ninety nine percent the same over half a dozen forms/grids?
And now you've added a whole slew of "slightly different" rowSetInfos to maintain.
So if you wanted to add a column that needs to appear everywhere... you've just increased the workload multi-fold?
That would be a management nightmare, wouldn't it? Not to mention yet more performance cost and a slower system?
Hmmmm..... I'm not sure I like where this is headed... someone needs to do some convincing...

  • How to have two partitions in windows 7 using bootcamp?

    Hello everybody,
I've just recently bought a new MacBook Pro, I'm not very familirar with Macintosh. I installed windows 7 using bootcamp but the problem is that I just can see one partition in which I've installed windows.
actually, I want to partition my 500GB disk to three different partitions as following:
    1) 70GB for Mac
    2) 80GB for Windows
    3) 350GB for Data
so that I can have third partition both in Mac and Win.
I searched internet and I found a few documents about it and I followed the instructions but I had no luck of success. one of the instructions I tried is: http://davidseah.com/index-ee.php/wikilab/Creating-2-Windows-Partitions-with-Boo t-Camp/
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

1: Those instructions at the link are severely outdated. Don't use them.
2: Apple expects users to have one Bootcamp partition, one OS X Lion partition and that's it and that's all they are going to hold your hand on.
(note: there is also a hidden EFI and a Lion Recovery Partition also on the drive.)
Anything beyond that is getting into major geek terror-tory.
Of course it's possible, I had my 15" with 7 partitions and booting 4 other operating systems from Lion, Snow, Windows, Linux (with a Linux Swap and a exFAT data). But I had to wipe the entire drive, set up the partitions install a alternate EFI boot program (a program that resides in firrmware) and then install each OS in each partition.
Since your new to Mac, you should really hold onto Apple's hand and use either a external drive formatted either FAT32(MSDOS) for under 4 GB files sizes (preferred) or exFAT for over 4GB files (not preferred but necessary) in Apple's Disk Utility.
Windows is as you know, formatted NTFS and OS X is formatted HFS+ Journaled as their partition data formats.
There is software for Windows called MacDrive which will read and write HFS format, and there is software from Tuxera that will allow OS X to read NTFS format.
There is a security issue allowing Windows to read HFS, but that should do transferring the small amount of files your going to be using in both operating systems.
OS X, like Windows, is going to expect files to be in each respective User folders of Music, Pictures and so forth when you open save dialog boxes, open finder windows, open certain programs and so forth. So ideally it's not best to share a partition or really have the user data on another partition at all.
I know it's a practice on Windows machines to partition data away from boot/programs to reduce defragmentation, on OS X it's not as necessary (except in special cases) as all 2GB sized files and below are written to one space on the drive (if there is room of course)
Windows 7 still needs to be defragged, however it can be schedualed and you can watch the progress. If you install WIndows, perform all the updates, then install programs, then finally any files you do keep there, it should stay optimized for a quite awhile. Ditton on the OS X side.
If your going to sharing a grreat quantity of files between the two OS's, use a external drive.
Apple installs a hybrid MBR in the Bootcamp partition for Windows to use to interact with the GUID partition table (GPT) it uses.

    Hi
If that field which you wants to add is available in one of the structures like EKKO,EKPO then you can add that field just beside the other fields
If that field is not there in the any of the structures then you can define a variable using define command
    /: DEFINE  &VAR&
    / &VAR&  = <some value>
or you can write subroutines to fetch the data from outside tables and can use those fields data in the script

  • Mac Mini won't boot to Mac after partitioning for Windows 7

    system:
    Mac Mini, late 2009
    Intel
    4 gig ram
500 gig hard drive, brand new
    OSX
Mtn Lion with Mavericks just installed, runs ok
    problem:
Adding 90 gig partition for Windows 7, now won't boot to either Mac or Windows
After a little bit sticky install of Mavericks, I had the thing running fine. I downloaded support sw onto the USB drive as per Bootcamp instructions, and started going through the wizard to install Windows 7.
First try:  "error" while creating the partition. I ran the Disk Utitliy, Verify Disk, found an error, ran Repair, it fixed the error
Second try: it started making the partition again, and then apparently just zipped through the partition making real fast (it finished so fast I could hardly catch it), then shut down in an apparent restart (as it's supposed to?), and from then on it won't reboot all the way. I get about 15 seconds of gray screen, the Win 7 disk jerks a little, then screen goes blank and silence. No hd activity. Tried restarting with all the usual key combinations (Command-R, "X" key, Option key, etc, etc). Nothing will bring the Mac login screen up again.
What gives? It is such b.s. for this stuff to be so flaky. This is all totally current software on the Mac side, running fine for days, and an apparently ok partition created. Fix me, Apple.

Got it. Thanks for the help.  Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything?  I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time.   It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.
