How to add a Shared printer to solaris

Hi,
In a server, i am using solaris 10 x86.
I want to add a shared printer which is attached in a windows xp PC.
Can any one guide me , how to add a printer which is shared in a Windowx PC to My Solaris 10 X86 Machine.
Thanks.
Viraj

Is it directly attached to the Windows PC (e.g. via USB?) Is it a laser printer?
In Windows, you may need to add the additional components for Unix printing and TCP (or IPP) printing. You should then be able to share your printer as a as an LPD/LPR printer or an IPP printer. Then you could probably use lpadmin to add the printer was my_xp_box:printQname
I have NOT used CUPS on a Solaris server myself - most of my printers are HP laser network printers that support LPR/LPD and port 9100 printing. but a quick google search will show that it is available for Solaris from the Solaris freeware companion CD. CUPS may make it easier to configure the solaris client. If you are dealing with an inkjet printer you probably will have to use cups to get the driver support.

Folks, network printers should NOT BE configured like this:
    lpadmin -p somequeue -s someprinter
that creates a remote style queue and puts all the I/O and processing capability on the basic LPD listener present on network printer interfaces. This will cause problems down the road, not to mention that you cannot control access, get any logging, filter content, or control banner pages.
Network printers should use any software (or PPD file) supplied by the vendor over the basic lpadmin/netstandard config.
You can install CUPS, but Oracle won't support it until it's part of the OS (S11, apparently).
The "System Administration Guide: Solaris Printing" is highly recommended for those administering printers on Solaris.

How to add a wireless printer to airprint?

Only the printer manufacturers can add AirPrint support to their printers via firmware updates. If your printer isn't listed on this page as supporting AirPrint, then does the manufacturer have their own app in the app store that supports it ? If not then there are third-party printer apps such a PrintCentral Pro and Print n Share which might work with it.

  • How can I add a shared printer USB plugged to the Time Capsule (on a windows vista PC)

Setting up an airport network was very easy, and is very intuitive and friendly working on a mac.  However, I tried to install the shared printer remotely on a windows vista PC and... well, that's a diffrent story.  Can anybody help?  Thanks!

If you have not already done so, you will need to download,  install and run Bonjour for Windows on the PC.
If you have already done this, what error messages are you receiving?

  • How do I get shared printer to print when job queue thinks job is completed

I have a HP d135 connected via USB to my mac mini. This printer is configured to be shared as is the mini file system. My XP machine on the network can see the mini and the printer. The XP machine has the d135 driver installed for itself and the mini. When I print on my XP machine, I can select the mini and the d135 and it appears to be queing the job; but, it never prints. The print job does, however, appear in the mini d135 print queue as completed.
So, it looks like the print job is making it's way to the mini, it just seems to get lost between the mini and the d135.
    Any suggested solutions?
    Thanks!

HOWTO Add a raw printer queue in OS X 10.4
(by greg sahli, May 15, 2006)
What is a raw Queue for? You want to share a non-postscript printer from an OS X Mac, but you want the regular driver to work on Windows (instead of using a postscript driver on Windows).
    1. Edit the files /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.types so that the line in each that starts with:
    #application/octet-stream
has the beginning "#" removed (which means you have uncommented it).
I would use the freeware Text Wrangler and its menu item File>Open Hidden to edit these files.
    2. Make sure the printer is on and connected by USB.
Go to Printer Setup Utility. Click Add, then note how the printer is identified next to the comm protocol, USB. In my case it is "Stylus Photo R200." Cancel and close Printer Setup.
Under the Apple menu, open About this Mac and click More Info to open System Profiler. Click on Hardware>USB. Under USB BUS, click on USB Printer. We will need two pieces of info from this, so keep it open in the background.
    3. Open a web browser (Safari, Firefox, etc). Enter this URL, which is the local admin web server for CUPS on your computer:
    http://localhost:631/
Click Do Administration Tasks. When it asks for authentication enter either your regular admin user/password, or, root and root's password. (Different computers are set up differently for this) Read more:
    http://www.cups.org/articles.php?L191
    4. Click Add Printer. Enter a helpful name, like R200_RAW (for my Epson R200). If you like, enter an "abbreviated" location and description. Click Continue. Select USB Printer, not the specific model. Continue. Now we need the info from System Profiler. Make the URI like this:
    usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20R200?serial=MO7P104xxxxxxxx40
    components of the above:
usb:// -- using the CUPS built-in USB backend driver
EPSON -- exactly as spelled (all-caps in my case) in System Profiler
Stylus%20Photo%20R200 -- as the name shows up in Printer Setup, but spaces are replaced with %20 (ascii substitute for space)
?serial=MO7P104xxxxxxxxx40 -- get the serial number from System Profiler.
    5. Click Continue. Select Raw. Continue. Select Raw Queue (en). Continue. Done. Now try printing from the Windows computer.

  • How to add a new printer and laptop to my home network

Greetings, Need tech help. I have 2 issues going on.
First I am trying to add a 2nd Printer to my home network. I was given an HP 4050N printer. I want to add it to my home network. My main printer is an HP Photosmart 8450. It is attached to my desktop thro a Belkin USB 4 port switch and then to my Desktop PC via a USB port.  THe HP 4050N has both parrallel and serial connectors...no USB ports.  WHat is the recommended method to hook up. I also have an actiontec wireless router.  Initially I had 2 separate desktop units talking to my main printer, but noe the second desktop has it's own printer.
Second, I recently acquired an HP Elite Book 2540P laptop. I got it to power make my SOlidworks and Autocad software portable.  I would like to add this to my home network but dont know if wireless of serial hookup is the best way to go.
I hope this makes sense.  I am open to reconfiguring everything if it makes sense.  My internet and TV are driven through the Action-tec router.
    I would appreciate some guidance.
