There are instruction in the manual that came with the computer. Set the drive jumper to CS (Cable Select). You will need to remove the tray's lip.

Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)

Want to add an external DVD drive my IdeaCenter D400 HomeServer.

Anyone have an idea how to get the Server to see it. I am going to use it to back up my DVD's using MyMovies. I have connected it (Asus Slim Combo DVD/Blu-Ray Drive) via the rear USB connections and it is not visible. The Asus DVD drive works fine with my other PCs. I am guessing it has something to do with the driver not being in Homeserver software. Not sure how to try to add it.

You should be able to use Windows Remote Desktop Connection to log in to the D400. Once logged in you can check the status of the drive in Device Manager, install any missing drivers and software. I'm not familiar with MyMovies, but once the DVD drive is set up it should take it from there...

Driver filters that Itunes adds to CD/DVD drive

When I install or reinstall Itunes it adds upper and lower filters to my CD/DVD drive which then disable my CD/DVD drive. I know this is a problem with Vista since Microsoft has posted a step by step method for removing these filters (doc # KB929461). This restores the CD/DVD drive operation. The article claims that the installed drivers interfere with the current filters. The article does recommend attempting to reinstall the software (Itunes) because the CD/DVD storage stack did not migrate succesfully to Windows. However, everytime I reintall, the CD/DVD drive stops working. Other than buying a Mac (next time I will) how can I get Itunes and my laptop fully functional? Is there a patch somewhere that will correct this issue?

It would be best first to check for a device filter conflict. In particular, I’ve seen HP Memories Disc Creator Software (which comes bundled with some HP digital camera software) interact in this way with iTunes:

... however, if you're still getting no CD/DVD drive with *just the iTunes filters in place*, you may be one of the unlucky ones who are getting the issue discussed here:

Although it wouldn't necessarily be a short-term thing, keep an eye on that document for updated information about the issue.
In the short term, one workaround might be to use a different application to rip the CDs, and then use the "Add to library" function to get the ripped files into your iTunes. The following document might be of some help with that:

I have Satellite P100 (PSPAD), and my cd/dvd drive (I dont know how or when) suddenly disappeard, it does not appear in my computer or device manager,
I tried this but coul not find the lowerfilters so i delite the upperfilter and restart the computer but that did not work.
So can I reinstall it somehow and how do i do it?

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2.
You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values.
To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Just one question;
Are you able to boot from the bootable disk like Toshiba recovery disk, Windows XP CD, Vista DVD or Linux live CD???
If yes, then you should try to reinstall the OS.
If not then this would mean that the CD/DVD drive malfunctions.

You said the CD/DVD drive has been recognized by BIOS.
Do you see the whole CD/DVD drive title/name or you can see just the CD/DVD drive option.
You should also test if you can boot from one of the mentioned disk and to ensure that this is not a hardware issue!

I have a T42 with a DVD/CD R/W. My current hard drive is only 40GB and it is running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I would like to install a second hard drive for extra storage capacity. What do you recommend for an extra hard drive and can it be installed in place of the removable DVD/CD drive? Since the currently installed DVD drive is using the UltraBay, I would think that just removing it and installing the additional hard drive in the UltraBay should be possible. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

I would not use a SSD for a second drive, there is really no benefit to this, an SSD would be much better for the primary hard drive where the OS runs from.
Any standard laptop Sata hard drive will work
You would need a hard drive hardware kit, includes bracket, shield, screws, and data cable.
I would contact HP parts to be sure you get the correct part(s) for your specific model

Firstly, find if you want SATA or IDE. Then make sure you have a free hole on the mobo for the drive, and spare in the case for it. Then make sure your PSU can power it. Then decide how much space you want and how much you want to pay. Then buy, screw it in, and connect the ribbon cable and power cable. Then boot, and it should come up in /dev. Then partition, and make a filesystem, then mount. Easy

Have you tried going to System Preferences CD&DVD and setting all the actions to Ignore?
There are reported ways to disable the DVD drive by removing the kext file(s) that deal with the DVD. I cannot vouch for any of these as I have not tried them myself
