How to add Hard Drive icon back into sidebar

Hi--
Someone deleted my HD from the sidebar, and I can't seem to get it back in just by dragging it. Is there a way to get it back?
Thanks

  • How to show hard drive icon on my desktop on iOS x

I'm using macbook pro and have iOS x. I want to have my hard drive icon appear on my desktop. Currently, it is not showing up. I would appreciate for an how to instruction.

Usually if you have Finder preferences set to Show (these items) Hard Drives,
on the Desktop, the icon of the computer's internal hard disk drive will appear
on the desktop in Finder as one of the options shown.
Click on Finder in main menu bar to see dropdown list; choose Preferences.
(in your OS X version, this may look different)
If you can't locate Finder menu that way, with other windows open, you can
click on the Finder (face icon) in the Dock, then the main menu will be Finder.
The current Mac OS X Mavericks is version 10.9.2.
The iOS does not run on these; only on iDevices.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to add hard drive manually (from CLI, not using VM Manager)

How do you add hard drive manually from command-line, not from VM Manager?
    TIA.

Please elaborate. A physical hard drive? Virtual? To the host? To a VM?

  • How can I get my hard drive icon back on the desktop

I just erased my hard drive on my Intel MacBook getting ready to give it to my daughter. I had the Snow Leopard install disc in the drive and used Disc Utility to erase the drive. I then installed Snow Leopard and everything went smoothly without a hitch.
Other than -- the icon for the hard drive is not on the desktop! I can open a Finder window and see everything that should be on the drive after an erase and reinstall, but the drive is not there.
How can I get it back?
    TIA
I am so sorry! This question has been answered more than once. I searched but didn't find it. When I posted this, however, the list of similar questions that pops up next to the message sent me to a simple fix and now all is well.
Again, sorry for having cluttered up the board with this question.
    Thanks.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and check the box for it.

    lamfishy,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Find the com.apple.dock.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, log out/in or restart and let us know what happens.

  • Where is hard drive icon

I just got a Macbook pro and noticed that on the desktop, there is no hard drive icon. So, I went in and found it under the devices and tried to drag it to the desktop. I got a "poof" and away it went.
Can someone tell me how to get the hard drive icon back. I have restarted and nothing. My computer is fine, but I really want the icon back (used to it) Can someone advice? Thanks! Kelly

Check the boxes for it in the General and Sidebar tabs of the Finder's preferences.

on my macbook pro the hard drive icon is not on my desktop and I don't know how to find the hard drive or get the icon back on my desktop

Click on the Desktop. From the Finder menu select Preferences. Check the boxes for what you want on your Desktop. If they are already checked, then try unchecking and rechecking.

  • I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

Quick thing to try: from the Finder, select the View menu and then select "Clean Up" in case it has wandered somewhere almost off the desktop.  Also, if it is "hiding" behind something, it will be revealed.

  • How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr

How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr?  I have downloaded Google Earth and it wants me to drag it to the hard drive for install. I was able to display the icon but now I would like to put it on the menu bar. Is this possible? Or can I add it to the hardware section under system preferences?
I'm a new Apple user, coming out of the dark ages of a lifetime in the PC Windows world.
    Thanks

It's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar.

  • Hard Drive Icon (Macintosh HD) Disappeared - How do I get it back

    Hi,
My Macintosh HD Icon that has been at the top right of my desktop forever is gone. Anyone know how to restore it? Getting to the hard drive now is a pain.
    Thanks.

I am not sure how the OS puts the hard drive icon onto the desktop. But, one thing you could do is to peak inside the /Volumes directory to see what is listed there in regards to your hard drive. To do that, start the terminal app from the utilities folder. Then, copy and paste this command into the terminal window:
ls -al /Volumes (followed by a return)
Then, please copy and paste the results into another post.
The results that I get are:
    drwxrwxrwt 4 root admin 136 Nov 24 19:32 .
    drwxrwxr-t 41 root admin 1496 Nov 15 18:50 ..
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 rich admin 6148 Nov 24 19:32 .DS_Store
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 Nov 15 18:51 eMac Hard Drive -> /
where eMac Hard Drive is the name for my hard drive. If your results do not look similar, perhaps there is a problem that can be fixed here.

  • I am using a WD external hard drive for backing up my laptop with Time Machine, but I have to do it manually. How do I know when it has finished the back up? How long should it take?

I am using an external WD hard drive for backing up my laptop. I have to do it manually, so I can't set Time Machine to just do it for me. How do I know when it is done backing up? How long should this take?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • I recently purchased an external hard drive to back up my iMovies. When I try to open the movies on the backup I get a message "you may not have permission to modify that folder" How do I change permissions on the backup?

I recently purchased an external hard drive to back up my iMovies. When I try to open the movies on the backup I get a message "you may not have permission to modify that folder" How do I change permissions on the backup?

    Hi
One Must NEVER move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Projects - or - alike
on DESKTOP/FINDER - Ever ! - ONLY Within the iMovie Program ! else all connections are broken and hard to impossibly to mend !
but rather do as described here under
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • How in the HECK can I change my Hard Drive icon??!??!!

I've tried searching these discussion forums for how to do this, but the question has always remained unanswered! Does ANYbody know how to use this? I'd buy applecare but I'm a student and can't afford it. Would somebody please figure out how to make it so that you can paste a new icon on top of the standard icon for 10.3.9? It's driving me crazy that after I copy the icon I want to use for my hard drive that I can't paste it on top.
And I've tried doing a permissions repair in Disk Utility.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That's how other people do it, HVlaar; it's the standard procedure. Works fine for me. Are you logged into an admin account? Have you considered that changing your hard drive icon probably isn't an important thing to do anyway?

  • How do I put the hard drive icon on my desktop?

Been awhile since I've been back in the Mac world. Bought a new iMac (Intel-based). How do I put the hard drive icon on my desktop. When I go to it from the "go" menu in the finder, making an alias isn't even a choice!

Click anywhere on your desktop so that Finder is displayed up on the menu bar. Next open Finder Preferences... select the General tab and check the Hard disks box.

  • HT204259 how can I migrate me old photos of iphoto to Photos of the new system? me photos are on a separate hard-drive as back up and me laptop was stolen recently!

how can I access me photos that are saved on a separate hard-drive (as back up) from the old iphoto to the new Photos?
My 6 month old MacBookPro was stolen a month ago and I have not have had a chance to migrate them pictures yet. And now the system says it can not be accessed!!
Having one's computer stolen is bad, not to be able to recover one's photos is even worse....
Can anybody give me a hint how to do this???
    Regards
    Jürg

    Hi Terence,
Thank you very much for your concern, I did try the way you suggested but no result. In me library I only found some 4 pictures dated between 2012 and 2013, and then maybe 70 from 2014 and a couple of hundred from this year.... all the other thousands are not there....
