How to add NAS to existing Airport Extreme Base Station Network...

Hi! I have a Airport Express network (DSL provided via a DSL modem) that is connected to the PC via ethernet, iMac 333 via Wireless adapter, and Powerbook via wireless card. I am bursting at the seams with components!!
I have the printer set up via the AE.
I would like to add a NAS to the works. (Just to see if it can frustrate me even more! )
How exactly would I hook this up? Any suggestions? Has anyone done this? Have a favorite NAS device you can recommend? We are looking to install this for a centralized place to store all our music, photos, movies, etc. We have TONS of digital media to store and it is clogging up our respective hard drives!

It is unclear... Do you have an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or AirPort Express (AX)?
If you have an AEBS then you should have this configuration:
DSL modem<->[WAN] AEBS [LAN]<->PC
If that is your current setup, you would need to modify it by adding an Ethernet switch (or hub) so that it looks like this:
DSL modem<->[WAN] AEBS [LAN]<->switch<-+->PC
.......................................|->NAS

So, it is not much different than most other routers on the market today. The one main difference is how you administer it. Your Synology NAS would connect to the AirPort Extreme pretty much the same as for any other manufacturer's routers. That is, you would connect it to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the Extreme. You would still use the same web-based interface as before.
Note: When connected to an Ethernet port, the NAS would still function as usual. The AirPort Extreme would not provide any file sharing functionality when connected in this manner. All file sharing features would be the responsibility of the NAS device.

HT4259 How do I set up an Airport Extreme Base Station (v. 7.6.1) to allow wireless network extension?

I have an Airport Extreme Base station (purchased in 2009) and an Airport Express base station (purchased in 2011 - the model that plugs directly into the electrical outlet) (both version 7.6.1 according to the Airport Utility info). I want to use the Airport Express to extend my wireless network. Using Airport utility setup I have a software option on the Airport Express to set it up to extend the network but I do not have an option on the Airport Extreme wireless setup screen that I can check to allow my wireless network to be extended.
All of the documentation I can find on Apple Support states that I should have an option I can check to allow the wireless network to be extended while in the wireles setup section for the Airport Extreme in Airport Utility; but, that check option isn't there. Is this a case of my Airport Extreme base station being too old to offer that option? Incidentally, when I try to select the extend wireless network option on the Airport Express from the Airport Utility wireless setup menu I get an error message (no details - just an error message). The same Airport Express sets up fine if I select join a network (not what I want to do). Am I just dealing with outdated equipment or does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Close AirPort Utility if it is open.
Temporarily, move the Express to the same general area as your AirPort Extreme and power it up and wait a minute.
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 9-10 seconds and then release. Give the Express a full minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Click on AirPort Express just below that and AirPort Utility will automatically open
Wait a minute while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and announces that the Express will be configured to "Extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait another minute to allow the configuration to occur.
When you see the Setup Complete message, click Done.
Now move the Express to a location that is approximately half the distance from the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage
Power up the Express and you are all set. Trash those old instructions.

Adding time capsule to existing airport extreme base station

I have an AEBS (1st generation) connected to my internet modem at the WAN port (PPPoE) and a wireless network set up and running fine.
I've bought a Time Capsule (4th generation) to boost the signal of the wireless network at my bedroom and have a wireless backup.
But I can't seem to make it work!!!
Can someone point me out some precise steps I should follow or list of settings?
(Maybe I need to reset the TC so to erase the mistakes I made. If is that so, how can I do it?)

Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

How do I add my Airport Express to extend my airport extreme base station network

How do I extend my wireless net work using my new airport express.
My base station is an airport extreme.
I can get both the extreme and the express to show up in the wireless set up system, but it wants to set up one or the other. I want them both working together to extend the range of my base station.

Power up the Express for a few moments, then "hard reset" it iby holding in the reset button for 10-12 seconds and then release. Give the Express 40-45 seconds to restart and you will see a slow blinking amber light when this occurs.
Open AirPort Utility - select the Express and Click Continue to follow the guided setup. You may need to "switch" networks if AirPort Utility presents this option so that you can configure the Express.
The first page of the setup will ask you to assign a name for the device and device password. On the next page select the "join a wireless network option". Select "join" again and then enter a check mark next to the option to "extend the range of the network"
Continue following the guided setup to configure the device and click Update to save your settings.
Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. Allow 40-45 second for the Express to restart.
A good location of the Express is a point that is about 1/2 the distance from your AirPort Extreme to the area that needs more wireless coverage. This will insure that the Express receives a strong signal to "extend".

Best way to add airplay to an airport extreme base station????

Hello educated apple users,
I am in the process of setting up my wirless network and entertainment sytem in my home.
I originally bought the airport express which was great acting as a wireless router as well as connecting my home stereo system receiver to it via an audio y cable, which allowed me to use airplay.
However, since I needed additional ethernet ports for my SmartTV as well as other wireless speakers I have (SONOS), I went and excanged the airport express for an Airport Extreme. Much to my dismay, the Airport Extreme does not have the audio input for airplay like the Airport Express does!! Another reason why I went and got the Airport Extreme was so that I could plug my external harddrive, which has all of my music on it, and access my music without having to have the harddrive connected directly to my Macbook Pro.
So I cannot decide what the best option is.
I want to use airplay with my home entertainment system
I need multiple ethernet ports
I want to connect my harddrive to my router
Option #1 - I've thought about getting the Express back, and just getting an ethernet hub, but that that still wouldn't allow me to connect my harddrive to the network.
Option #2 - Keep the Extreme, and find another way to use airplay with my home entertaintment system (maybe an Apple TV?)
Option #3 - Keep the Extreme, and get another Express unit just for the airplay functionality. Is this even possible?
I am obviously looking for the most efficient, effective and economical solution. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!!!

SNR is by far the best tool to measure wireless connection quality. That is why Apple, and so many other WiFi utilities either don't even use it, or hide it. if I look at AirPort Utility and see a "good" signal quality, then look at SNR, that "good" is really Low to Very Low.
When you extend a network using wireless, you would want to locate an extending AirPort at a location where it receives at least a 25 db SNR. Higher would be better.
Unfortunately, 13db and 9db indicate that the AirPorts are located much too far from the office AirPort to pick up a high quality signal....or.....there are too many obstructions....walls, ceilings, furniture, etc in the signal path between the extending AirPorts and the Office AirPort.....or a combination of too much distance and too many obstructions is also possible.
Without knowing the very detailed layout of your home, I am not sure what to suggest at this point. I am afraid that you are going to need to look for better locations for the AirPorts, keeping in mind that the most remote AirPort needs to be closer to the Office AirPort than it is to other AirPort in order for both AirPorts to extend the signal reliably.
Apple's "extend" setup was really designed for layouts where the "main" AirPort is located centrally in the home, and the "extending" AirPorts are located like satellites at either end of the house. This way, the "extending" AirPort will usually pick up a decent quality signal to extend, and both extending AirPorts are located much closer to the "main" AirPort than they are to each other, so the network has a much better chance of working reliably.

I'm on a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio version without a built-in modem. I already have a Linksys wireless network set up between my Mac and PC laptop. So... I don't want to use the wireless networking on the Airport...
I just want to configure the Airport Base Station to use the built in 56K modem so that I can fax directly off the Mac. I did that on my old computer that had a built in modem, but I need to know how to configure this G4 and Base Station modem to perform this task.
Please help me connect the right wires (does the G4 connect to the base station with USB?). Then the power cord, and an RJ11 line from the phone to the airport base...
And what software (the used airport I bought doesn't have a software disc).

There is no need to re-install anything. The "AirPort Admin Utility" and "AirPort Setup Assistant" are in the /Applications/Utilities folder on your Mac.

How to add Ethernet ports to an Airport Extreme Base Station?

I have successfully connected an HP Office Jet 6310 to the Airport Extreme Base Station, after downloading the latest software from HP. It is printing wirelessly, and it is great so far.
The only problem is that the cable modem connected to ADSL has only one Ethernet port, and the Airport Extreme Base Station also has one Ethernet port. However, I need one more port to connect a phone (Vonage Telephone Adapter = VTA).
What is the easiest way to achieve this? I saw several other messages discussing hubs and routers, but the answer is not clear yet. If I purchase an additional router, should it be connected between the cable modem and the Airport Extreme Base Station, or the other way round?
Any help or advice would be appreciated!

One final vital piece of information, which should be my conclusion on this topic.
Following the advice received, I purchased a Switch from Linksys. Since the device didn't work for my purpose (dividing the Ethernet connexion into an Ethernet line for the HP printer and the Vonage phone), I called the Linksys support.
I was told that what I needed was not a switch, but a router. I thus had to get reimbursed for the switch and hunt for the proper router.
Finally, today, I have been able to find the item corresponding to my needs:
A Belkin Wireless G Router F5D7230-4
It costs less than 50 US$ and has all the necessary Ethernet ports. The setup is very simple, and I got it operational within a couple of minutes, despite some small problems getting the setup Wizard to work. It is Mac OS X compatible.
Thus, at the end, I have got the HP 6310 Office printer and the Vonage VTA phone working together, with a robust Wireless network including WPA security. I would recommend this type of setting.
The only trouble is that the AirMac Extreme Base Station has become completely useless! I will perhaps keep it as a souvenir, or as a decoration in the living room... This wouldn't have happened if the creators of this nice object, which is extremely expensive for what it provides, would have thought of including at least two Ethernet ports!
The unexpected reply to my query could thus be ironically formulated by saying: "replace the Airport Extreme Base Station with a cheaper an more efficient device." Sorry for that!

Cool. So I followed the instructions. The drive is recognized by the base station and listed in the Airport Utility. It looks like it's ready to go...
So... How do I access the drive? I don't see it on my desktop, it's not under network. I've tried "Connect to server..." and browsing, I can't see the drive, anywhere. Yeah, I've searched the crap out of this issue on google and this message board as well as apple support knowledge base. I'm sure this is a simple issue and I'm just missing the obvious. Help me out.

Try the following to mount the disk...
o Click on the Desktop to enter Finder
o Go > Connect to Server...
o Enter 10.0.1.1 for the server
o Enter Disk Password
o Connect
If this still doesn't solve the problem, let's double-check your disk sharing settings...

How do I configure an Airport Extreme base station to receive and distribute a wi-fi network from a broadband wireless router?

I have recenly upgraded my broadband service and now have a wireless router. My old network configuration was a router connected by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme base station which then broadcast my wireless network (I also had an Airport Express base staion set up as a wi-fi booster elswhere in the house).
I now have two networks (my original network and the new network from the wireless router) and wish to amalgamate these into one.
Ideally I wish to use the Airport Extreme base station as the "remote" booster (I have purchased Powerline adapters for this purpose) but don't know how to configure the Airport Extreme base station in order to to this.
Can you advise on the best set up for this please?
My Mac is running OS X 10.8.2 and the Aiport untility is version 6.1.

The AirPort Extreme should be configured to "create a wireless network" with the same WiFi network name, security type (usually WPA2 Personal) and password as your existing router. It should be configured as connection type Ethernet and be in bridge mode.

How do I open the same ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station for multiple computers at the same time?

As the title suggests...
I have a mix of five Mac and PC's at home using an Airport Extreme Base Station as the router.   I need many ports opened on the AEBS for all of the computers- not just one computer. (for example: three people want to play TF2 on Steam at the same time; each machine needs the correct ports open on the router).   Port forwarding only allows me to forward a given port to a single IP, yet I need that port open for five differnt IP's, all at the same time.
How do I do that on an AEBS?
In the same way, I have a small office of four iMacs using an old airport with the same exact issue.   I would like to be able to connect to all of them remotely with Apple Remote Desktop, but the port forwarding on the airport only allows a port to forward to a single IP.   I want to be able to tunnel into the office network and log onto any machine behind the Airport extreme... not just a single IP.    I currently have it set up where I can tunnel into the office from my house, I can find the one machine that the port forwarding has been assigned to, I can log on and everything is just fine... with one machine.    How do I open the firewall for the other machines?
TL,DR version: How do you open ports on an Airport Extreme Base Station instead of forwarding ports?   Forwarding ports doesn't work for multiple IP's.

You can open a single or multiple ports to a single device or different ports to different devices, but you cannot open the same port to multiple devices via the AirPort Utility for the Apple routers.
