How to add USB 2.0 or FireWire connections?

Hi everyone,
I already have a USB 2.0 hub attached to my MacPro because all the available slots are taken but I would prefer if the periferals were directly plugged into the Mac. Is there any other way to add extra USB 2.0 connections or better yet, FireWire connections to the MacPro?
Rio.

Hi Rio,
I had a problem when I installed the PCI Express cards. The cards worked fine but there was a problem with automatically putting the system to sleep. If you have your system set to sleep automatically after a certain amount of time and install the cards then the system won't go to sleep automatically. I had this problem with an older G4 and my new MP. Apple told me that was normal and they expected it to be fixed in Leopard. I ended up returning the cards.
I'm not the expert, but that was my experience.
Good luck.

    1. Just plug them in. The drives need to be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and may need to be connected through a powered USB hub.

  • How to Add USB Drivers to a Virtual Machine

    Hi,
the documentation and also the "old" Sun Wiki always refers to the USBD.SY_ from the Windows XP Media.
We have a Windows 2008 R2 Server running on VMware ESXi with RDS and I don't get the USB redirection to work properly.
First of all, the driver of the utSrServerBus Device is not installed correctly (it seams to because of the Windows Driver Compatiblity Check). The Device hast a yellow warning "!" in the Device Manager and says (Code 52).
The driver was signed wrong or the file is corrupt. I've reinstalled it several times now. Watching the driver file (inf) properties I see that it is signed by Oracle (and by Versign).
I think this also leads to that the utSrServerPort is not installed.
The second idea is, that I don't use the "right" usbd.sys. Of course it was not possible to install the one from XP. Even from XP 64 bit.
According to: http://www.digi.com/support/kbase/kbaseresultdetl.jsp?id=1051 Windows 2008 R2 need the USBD.SY_ from its original media...
BUT: the file is already there...
    Thanks a lot

  • How to add USB storage to Server.app

I've recently moved to OSX for my development platform. I've installed the Server.app from the app store and need to start creating my development sites. The problem I'm having is that my 1TB USB 3.0 drive is not being seen by the Server.app's storage tab, thus not able to create website storage there. Can anybody please point me in the correct direction?!

Hurray! We have success! So the answer is that only drives formatted in the MacOS Extended format work within the Server.app. Props to Mark23 for his indirectly direct answer to adding USB drives to OSX server!

  • How to add USB printer to airport extreme

    How to setup with utility

You do not use the AirPort Utility to set up a printer if that is what you mean.
You will need a Mac or a PC to setup the printer.
Post back to let us know what you have and what operating system is being used. Also we need to know if your are asking if it is possible to print from your iPad or iPhone. It may or may not be.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible with the AirPort Express, so this will be one of those times when you will not know if something will work until you try it.
Also keep in mind that if you have an All-in-One device, only the print function will be supported when the device is connected to the AirPort Extreme. If you need copy, scan, maintenance, etc.....probably best to leave the device connected directly to your computer.

  • USB 2.0 vs FireWire 800

I just got a 500 LaCie d2 Quadra and I don't know if I should use the USB or the 800 FireWire connection for backing up with Time Machine. Suggestions?

One of the best tests to see if a backup is good, is if it is bootable. Though that's only with clones. Time Machine isn't a clone per se. But with Powerbooks if you do clone, to test its bootability you'll need Firewire. USB can't boot PowerPC Macs. Only Firewire can with Mac OS X. Intel Macs on the other hand can boot via USB and Firewire.

  • Booting to read a firewire connected computer

How to boot a computer to read firewire connected second computer. Both Mac minis

If you just want to be able to read files off the target computer's hard drive, you boot your host computer normally, and on the target computer, attach a keyboard and reboot with the T key held down.
If you want to be able to boot the host computer from the target's hard drive, again boot the target Mac with the T key held down, and reboot the host computer with the Option key held down. You'll be able to choose the firewire-attached drive from the boot panel. This will work provided that the target computer has an OS that the host can boot.

  • How can I add USB 3.0 to my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-190t CTO Desktop PC?

How can I add USB 3.0 to my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-190t CTO Desktop PC?  It uses Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS.
I can't tell how many or if there are expansion slots inside the case.  Is there a reliable source for such an expansion card?

Considering the different options that PC could have been ordered with, it might be there is not an empty slot to mount a PCI add-on card to add a USB 3.0 card.  It would be advisable to open the case to see if there is an empty slot.  If there is, then THIS is a choice to add USB 3.0

what file name is for the driver of gpib-usb-b?and how to add the driver file to vb in win2000??thanks

    Hi,
Multiple files are required for the proer fnctioning of any of our GPIB products. Unfortunatly the installation is not as simple as copying a single file over. If you wish to make the installer silent, i believe this is entirely possible in a fashion similar to the details given at http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/0730A66245E6808086256CA8006E2183?OpenDocument.
    Hope this helps out!

  • How to add Airport Express and USB 2?

    Hello all,
I have a Titanium 1ghz that currently has no Airport. I'd like to add Airport Express and USB 2. I know I can do both via the PCMCIA slot, but only one at a time.
(Before you say: Just add USB 2 via the slot, and then add a WiFi dongle via the new USB -- I need to use the Airport for Internet Sharing (the PB is going to be a slim little server/Airport hub), and I've never seen anyone (including me) succeed at getting an internet connection shared via a dongle.)
FWIW, the main reason I need the USB 2 is to connect a pair of external hard drives. If I could connect the USB drives via the Firewire ports, I'd be all set. Are there adapters that would let me do this?
    Thoughts? They're much appreciated.
    SJ

No, there aren't. But it would be simple enough to replace your USB-only external drive enclosures with enclosures that have FireWire ports. Just swap the drive mechanisms themselves into the new enclosures. FireWire would give you better speed than USB2, and if your enclosures have two FW ports (say, one FW 400 and one FW 800) and their own power supplies, then you could daisy-chain both drives on the Tibook's single FW port.
Of course if you can get by without having the two drives connected at the *same time* as you're using the wifi connection, then a USB2 PC Card and a wifi PC Card (like this one) will serve you just fine.

  • HOW TO YOU ADD USB FLASH DRIVE TO BOOT OPTION

i HAVE TWO LAPTOPS SAME MODEL NUMBER ONE CRASHED, hp SUPPORT TALKED ME THROUGH F11 TO RECOVER TO FACTORY CONDITION  THE LAPTOP STOP AT 100% WITHN1 MINUTE LEFT TO CMPLETE.  HP TOLD ME TO ESCAPE AN DO F2 TO CHECK THE HARD DRIVE.  THAT WORK IT SHOWED ALL THE CHECKS PASSED.  IT TOOK 2 + HOURS SO WHEN i CALLED BACK DIFFERENT PERSON SAID $350 SEND IT THEY WILL FIX.  iT'S NOT IN WARRANY SINCE FEB2014 i ONLY PAID $399 FOR IT, CANNOT AFFORD THAT.  SO HP TECH SAID USE SECOND PC TO MAKE A FLASH DRIVE .  (I MADE CD'S WHEN I FIRST GOT IT BUT THEY DID NOT WORK).   SO GOT A FLASH DRIVE WTH 32GIGS (I THOUGHT SHE SAID I NEEDED AT LEAST 20 GIGS)  COPIED THE RECOVERY PROGRAM, NOW THE USB WILL NOT OPEN.  FROM AN EARLIER WRITTER HE WAS TOLD TO F10 BIOS, ESC LOOP FOR BOOT OPTIONS TO SEE IF USB FLASH DRIVE IS THERE.  MY PROBLEM ITS NOT ON MY PC SO HOW DO I ADD IT SO THE USB WILL OPEN.
RIGHT NOW PC IN A LOOP WHEN POWERED ON HP AND TIME COMES UP, LITTLE WHILW A BLOCK WITH HP/DAT/TIME COMES UP AND A CMD ON BOTTOM OF SCREEN, IT GOES BY TOO FAST T CLICK ON IT AND GOES BACK TO HP LOGO.  IF I COULD ADD USB FLASH AS AN OPTION IT MIGHT MAKE IT OPEN  ANY HELP APPRECIATED.

The flash drive is not going to show up if it is not bootable. To make a bootable Recovery on flash you have to use Recovery Manager just like you do to create cd/dvd Recovery.

  • Can I add USB 2.0 to my Ibook 700 G3 via a Firewire/USB2.0 Hub?

I have seen several hubs that sport both Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 ports. If I connect the hub to my Ibook via Firewire, does it make sense then that I can add my external Seagate HD to the USB 2 port on the hub and get the added speed?
The external Seagate HD connects fine under USB 1.1, but I would like to get the added speed from 2.0
    thanks

No, this won't work. For USB, it would only be able to use the USB 1, the same that you have now.
In this press release for the D-Link hub, it states:
The D-Link QuickMedia USB 2.0/FireWire 7-port Combo Hub provides high-speed connectivity through the power of USB 2.0 and FireWire. The USB 2.0 ports can transfer data at up to 480Mbps*, 40 times faster than previous USB hubs, and are backward compatible with USB 1.0 and USB 1.1. The D-Link DFB-H7's three FireWire ports support transfer rates of up to 400Mbps. At these speeds, users can edit home video, transfer music and print digital images without latency.
The FireWire only works through the FireWire port and will not increase the speed of your USB ports.

  • How to ADD a second external Hard Disk ?

    Hi,
I'm using an iMac 1,42 GHZ PowerPC G4 mini.
With an external 250 GB hard disk.
Can I ADD an extra external hard disk ?
    And HOW ?
Thanks very much for an answer !
    John

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You probably have a Mac mini, as an iMac is a different system.
Using firewire connections, you can daisy chain drives together. So, you hook one into the mini, then hook the next into a firewire port on the external hard drive connected to the mini. If your current hard drive is connected via firewire, you should be able to add another firewire drive by plugging into your existing external hard drive.
If you're using a USB drive, you can buy a USB hub that will allow you to connect more than one USB device.
