How to adjust HDMI overscan without catalyst control center? 2011

I have an unsolvable problem due to the lack of standard between Apple and AMD.
The problem is that i have a black frame arround my TV screen when i connect my MacBook Pro 2011 (15" 2.2Ghz) to my TV.
This is called overscan.
Now here is why i can't solve this (and why it is so frustrating):
-AMD cards send underscanned signal through an HDMI output by default.
-Having no native control for overscanning on Windows 7, the only way to adjust this is through AMD/ATI Catalyst Control Center software.
-The AMD Catalyst Control Center software is incompatible with the MacBook Pro 2011 and won't install.
Now is there a workarround for this?
If not, who is responsible (who should i turn to)?
Is it Apple for using a non-standard driver for the AMD graphic card?
Or is it AMD for not providing me with a compatible version of Catalyst Control Center?
PS: Of course Microsoft is responsible for not providing native overscan control in Windows 7

Hi C,
See if the TV has overscan settings or zoom.
http://hd.engadget.com/2010/05/27/hd-101-overscan-and-why-all-tvs-do-it/
In a perfect world broadcasters would mind their signal and ensure every pixel was worth watching, then TV manufacturers wouldn't feel the need for overscan -- or at least we hope. In the meantime we're just happy that most TVs have a way to turn it off. When an image is displayed properly, it's sometimes referred as 1:1 pixel mapping. This simply means that every pixel in the signal is displayed by a single pixel on the display. Of course each manufacture has its own name for this mode; like Samsung who sometimes calls it Screen Fit, and Pioneer called it Dot by Dot. No matter what it's called, it's rarely on by default -- even when watching 1080p24 from Blu-ray which never has garbage on the edges! -- so you'll have to find the button on the remote called something like format or P.size, depending on the brand. Your best bet is to read the manual -- shocker.

  • Amdcccle (Catalyst Control Center) not saving multiple monitor setting

I followed the wiki to the letter, but I cannot get any x window session to save the changes I make in amdcccle.  All I am trying to do is get multiple monitors configured, and it works great with the catalyst control center but it never saves these settings.
    I have done the following:
    gksu amdcccle
    gksudo amdcccle
    also:
    sudo aticonfig -f --initial=dual-head --screen-layout=right
and many other interations of aticonfig.  The -dtop option complains that it doesnt work with RandR enabled.
I got this working a few weeks ago but can't remember what I did.  If amdcccle could actually save the current configuration to file that would solve the issue but it simply will not.

    Hello insco6750,
When you updated the drivers did you install over top of existing software or uninstall beforehand?
First we should try ripping everything ATI off of the system, including software, drivers and CCC. You should be able to uninstall everything through Add/remove programs.
After you remove everything reboot and let windows reinstall it's own drivers and software. You don't need CCC to do dual monitors so we can do testing without it.
Once you let windows install see if your HDMI output no longer works when you switch to the TV.

  • Envy h8-1409 Desktop-Problem Installing Catalyst Control Center on Wiindows 7 for Radeon HD 7570

    Hi,
I just purchased an HP Envy h8-1409 desktop.  It came with Windows 8 but I downgraded to Windows 7 due to my unfamiliarity with the new Windows 8.
Officially, HP only provides Windows 8 drivers for this particular model I bought.  However, I was able to find another HP desktop model (h8-1360t) that has almost the same hardware that has Windows 7 drivers.  I downloaded all the Windows 7 drivers and was able to install properly for everything except for the Graphics Card (Radeon HD 7570).  There was an error message during the start of the installation complaining that the driver was unable to find supported hardware on my machine.  I ended up using "Windows Update" to get the driver for the Radeon HD 7570.
Having installed the Radeon HD 7570 driver only allows Windows to recognize my graphics card but I was unable to adjust any advanced settings.  So I went to AMD's website to get the latest Catalyst Control Center package.  During the installation, no error was found and everything seemed alright.  However after the installation is complete, I was unable to see Catalyst Control Center anywhere on my computer (e.g. Start menu, right-click menu, etc).  Also, when I checked the "ATI Technologies" folder, it was empty!
I also tried using AMD's auto detect agent but my graphics card was not even recognized.
I am running out of ideas on how I can get Catalyst Control Center installed.  Please help!

    Hello,
Here is an article about downgrading a Windows 8 computer.  I hope it helps.
    Good luck!

  • T400, cannot start Catalyst Control Center - error "active GPU not supported"

on a t400 machine running vista business 64 bit.
last week all was hunky dory.  this week, when i try to open my ati catalyst control center (CCC), i receive the following error:
"ATI catalyst control center cannot be started because the currently active gpu is not supported"
i've read some posts about this problem stemming from not using the ATI graphics card and rather being on the integrated graphics card.  the posts indicated i could reenable CCC simply by clicking on the battery icon in the system tray and selecting "high performance mode" to force the machine to use the discrete graphics card.  after i do this, and then try to start CCC, i receive the same error as above.  also, at this point after the switch to high peformance mode, my device manager lists "mobile intel(r) 4 series express chipset family" as my display adapter still.  if i left or right click on the battery icon in the tray, i do not see any options for switching cards explicitly.
the video driver for the mobile intel 4 adapter is listed as being from ATI at version 8.520.4.4000.
i am not sure of my driver version for the ATI card.  nor do i know where to look for it.
to my knowledge, nothing aside from a number of "critical" windows updates have changed on my system between the time CCC was working last week and now.
any suggestions as to how to fix this?  and what caused it to stop working?
thanks in advance for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

i finally figured it out.  and no new drivers or reinstalls were necessary.  in the end, all i needed to do was turn on the lenovo version of the power manager (which appears in my taskbar as a horizontal green battery with the number of minutes of use remaining).  from there i can left click and get to the menu that has the switchable graphics option where i can chose energy saving or high performance.  if from there i select high performance, i can then open CCC.
the important thing to note from this is in order to get to this menu you have to be using LENOVO's thinkVantage power management program (which sticks the green battery icon on your task bar), NOT windows built in power manager, which appears as a vertical grey/blue/? battery in the system tray (at least on mine).  once you have that on, you can explicitly switch the graphics cards.
the odd thing is, i'd been accessing CCC without explicitly switching cards with no problem up to last week.  so somehow the default setting must of gone from high performance to energy saving, thus putting me on the integrated graphics card unless i switched it manually.  weird.
slip, thanks for you help.  i appreciate it.  and that is an interesting note about freeing up more memory by disabling the switchable graphics.  i will probably give this a shot and see how i like.  more available memory never hurts!
thanks again to everybody that helped out.

  • Catalyst Control Center: Persistent Issues

    Hello,
I am running an HP Pavilion dv7 with AMD graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650). After installing Windows 8.1 I have been experiencing problems. Whenever I try to run the Catalyst Control Center application, I get an error message:
"Catalyst Pro Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Pro Control Center."
This issue seems well documented online, and I have spent the past few days going over every reported work around I could find, including uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and software directly from the manufacturer's website, without alleviating
the issue in the slightest. My best guess is that I have to hack a .inf file somewhere, but I have no idea how I am supposed to do this.
    Please help.

    Hi,
As far as I know, this is ATI graphic card driver compatibility problem, because your Graphic card is too old, its driver for Widnows 8.1 had some compatibility problem. You can try to install the latest beta edition for test.
In addition you can contact ATI to identify this problem.

  • Catalyst control center stopped working

    HP Pavilion HPE h8-1287c
    Video card Radeon HD 7450
    Windows 7 64-bit
Error message "Catalyst Control Center stopped working......."
Two monitors connected, HPw2408h and TV. HP monitor is connected using DVI and the TV using HDMI.
The issue is that when the pc starts things run fine. WhenI want to have the sound to the TV I switch the Sound Playback to AMD HDMI Output and the TV now has the sound. After a while I will get an error message "Catalyst Control Center stopped working.......". When Sound Playback is opened the AMD HDMI Output is no longer working and has a red arrow pointing down and it indicates the AMD HDMI Output is "not plugged in".
I have download the latest drivers and still have the same results.
What is needed to correct the issue?

  • Windows 8.1-AMD Catalyst Control Center

    Hello!
First of all I would like to start of by saying thank you Hp for an amazing product, I bought my Hp Envy m6 laptop in May and I have loved it ever since. I bought it as a gaming machine, and it did not disappoint me...until I decided to update to Windows 8.1.
I downloaded it from the app store last week to see what new features they added (was rather disappointed with how long it took especially for the lack of great features they added, however that is not your fault), after a day when I bought a new game from Steam (Arma Two) and I went to the Catalyst control center to set the performace to high I realized it had stopped working the message I got was:
"Catalyst Control Center cannot be started.
There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center"
This means a lot go my games are running rather bad at the moment as they are using a mixture of my intergrated Intel 4000 "graphics card" and my AMD Radaen HD 2GB Graphics card. Instead of just my AMD graphics card (the good one).
I tried looking for solutions to this problem e.g. A new download for Catalyst Control Center or an easy way to downgrade to windows 8 from windows 8.1 however I have been unsuccessful. The only method that seems possibly is to downgrade however that would involve uninstalling all my programs (Over 50 games from steam) and all my other programs.
So the reason for this message is that I am looking for a solution to this problem, either an easy way to downgrade to windows 8 OR a way to get my Catalyst Control Center to work again  so I can change what graphics card is used when.
    Thank you
    -Conor
P.s. I love Hp's products and I have told all my friends to get them. This is window 8's fault not yours.

    Possible solution:
    Hi Guys,
I just contacted HP support regarding this problem. They asked me to install the following file:
    ccc2_install.exe
It was already present in my system in the following path:
    "C:\Program Files\AMD\CCC2\Install"
This solved my problem. CCC is working fine now
Also, while installing, your desktop might go black and only active windows will seem to work. But, thats fine, just restart your system.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers...
    Thanks and regards,
    Saptarishi

  • Boot Camp - Windows 7 (64-bit) - Catalyst Control Center

    Hi,
This topic is all about running Catalyst Control Center on your Mac in Boot Camp.
    Setup:
    Mac Pro 2.66 (early 2009)
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    Boot Camp 3.2
    Windows 7 (64-bit) SP1
    Case:
First I uninstalled all graphic drivers that came with Mac OS disc. After that I booted up in safe mode and removed all left-overs with Drive Sweeper. After verifying that everything was gone I booted up in standard mode and installed latest version of Catalyst Software Suite (v.11.2).
Notice! To get through with the installation of CSS I had to uncheck features like drag and drop decoding. If I did not uncheck those features the installation process would fail...no clue why. After a "successful" installation it still does not work. When I right-click the CCC shortcut or try to start the application from its folder nothing happens.
    *Solution (if any):*
    Any ideas?
    <Edited by Host>

I had trouble accessing catalyst control center (for my AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series display adapter) on my Windows partition (64-bit).  I tired installing the drivers from the mac os x cd and from AMD's web site.  While I could successfully install the driver, I couldn't get the control center up and running.  The interesting solution to this problem was downloading the AMD Catalyst™ 12.2 Preview Driver.  After installation, i was able to access the catalyst control center and solve a problem that I was having (undersize on my monitor when using HDMI).  I hope that this helps solve the problem to others who are experiencing it (I thought I'd post as this page came up in my solution searching).

  • 7850 CrossFireX - Catalyst Control Center - Disable CrossFireX

Hello, I have MSI 7850 CrossFireX. I was playing Skyrim and notice micro-stutter so I went into Catalyst Control Center and disabled CrossFireX.
The problem is that Skyrim will not load. It always crashes when I start the game. I re-enabled CrossFireX and it will load fine.
I was wondering whether this is a known issue. Maybe I have to physically remove the connector to get it to work (I haven't tried that. I just wanted to see how it would do with one card). I don't know if this is a problem with Catalyst Control Center, the driver, Skyrim, Steam or what.
Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Catalyst Control Center ATI graphics card error message

This error message keeps popping up:
"The Catalyist Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays Manager."
I have the latest driver and as far as I can tell, it is the only driver it is possible for me to "enable." Why does this message keep popping up and how do I stop it?
    Thank you.

    Uninstall the catalyst control center.
Download the most recent display driver from Lenovo - not from ATI.
    Uninstall the existing display driver.
Install only the display driver - do not install catalyst control center.  It is totally unecessary in this computer, in my opinion.  Both XP and Vista do a simpler job of managing displays.

  • Amd catalyst control center panel

am trying to use the AMD Catalyst Control Center but if you look at picture u will see that most of the functions of the control center are missing. I have tried reinstalling it ( the one on the HP download page) but it says "the computer does not meet the requirements for installing the software" yet going by the model and serial number of my laptop it is the one HP says to use. Has anyone else had this problem and if so found a fix?

Just wondering how posts are chosen to be answered as I see some from today are answered and earlier posts are still waiting for a reply.

  • I Can't Switch between 'power-saving GPU' and 'High-Performance GPU' in Catalyst Control Center

    Hi,
Whatever if my computer was only on the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. In Catalyst Control Center, I noticed that 'High-Performance GPU' was always selected', although the 'automatically select power-saving GPU when on battery' was enabled. Also, When I tried to switch into the 'power-saving GPU', there was no response at all. However, when my laptop was only on the battery, I noticed the the try of switching into 'Power-Saving GPU' results in shutting down my computer suddenly.
Thus, I had to open the Device Manager, then I disabled 'Radeon HD'. After that,  'power-Saving GPU' was selected(Screen shot below), regardless of whether my laptop was on only the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To switch it into 'High-performance GPU' again, I only must enable 'Radeon HD' in the Device Manager since clicking on 'High-performance GPU' in the Catalyst Control Center didn't respond.
As conclusion, 'High-performance GPU is always selected, regardless of whether my computer was only the Battery, or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To let 'power-saving GPU' is selected, then 'Radeon HD' must be disabled in the Device Manager.

  • Catalyst Control Center stopped working properly after widows update

When I let Windows Update install the newest catalyst control center driver I could not open catalyst control center so I tried to do a system restore but it failed because It said my anti virus was preventing this with the error code 0x80070005.I first tried to disable the anti virus shields and restore didnt work. Then I uninstalled the anti virus and went to safe mode but it gave my the same error. Now Catalyst Control Center opens but the only feature available is HydraVision. I still cannot change the picture and graphics settings because they are not there to select in CCC.

  • Satellite A100-237: I do not have the Catalyst Control Center after driver installation

    Hello,
    I use a Satellite A100-237 laptop. 1.83 GHz Core Duo, Ati Mobility Radeon X1600 512MB Hypermemory, 1.5GB DDR2 RAM.
My laptop now seems to use only the own 256 MB RAM (Graphic card's own RAM).
I purchased Need for Speed Carbon and installed it to my laptop.
When I tried to open the game, a blue screen appeared for less than 1 seconds, and than system restarted. Windows said that that was a critical error and a driver stopped Windows XP to operate, therefore system is restarted.
I searched in the net for this problem and, people said that, when they updated the driver the problem is solved.
I downloaded Display driver 8.241 (download file name: display_xp-8241.zip) from toshiba-europe.com.
Driver installed but while installing ATI Catalyst Control Center, at a point the installation process stoped continuing. I had to end the task after a while.
It said that driver is installed and system must be restarted.
Now the game works, thats not the problem, however I do not have the Catalyst Control Center. (Where I recently use it for connecting other screens to my laptop)
How can I solve this problem?
    Sorry for long letter,
    Thanks for helps.

You may run the driver installer again, use the custom installation option and select Catalyst Control Center only. Alternatively, you may remove the entire driver and try re-installing again. I suggest you also download the notebook driver package from ATI's website instead of Toshiba, as their drivers are usually more up-to-date (although it might be less safe to use them, I don't know).
And BTW, I have the same notebook and I have failed to see an option to set the machine to use the VRAM *only* instead of borrowing from RAM whenever necessary. Any ideas?
