How to align layers without clipping masks?

Hi,
I would like to (left) align some layers that are made up of placed photos with clipping masks applied. When invoking the "left" align command Adobe Illustrator CS3 aligns everything bases on the invisible boundaries of the clipping masks instead of the desired results of the clipping masks themselves. See screenshot here: http://badtastic.com/temp/Picture%203.png
Is there a "smart" way to align these layers without Adobe Illustrator CS3 taking into consideration the invisible boundaries of the clipping masks?
Input appreciated.
Kind Regards / Alex

Hi Steve,
Hey, thanks for your tip :)
I managed to solve the problem by drilling down into the nested hierarchy and selecting only the clipping masks and successfully aligning those irrespective of their parent layers. Its also a bit laborious which makes one wish that there were the possibility / feature to not only select artwork based on "same" stroke / fills etc but even by similar layer names. If that had been possible, I could have easily selected one Clipping Mask and then selected all the others based on name similarity without having to unfold all the nested hierarchies to get to all the others one by one.
Anyway, thanks again.
Cheers / Alex

  • How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure?

    Hi guys,
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?
    Cheers
    Mat

I avoid sublayers, because they really were never thoroughly developed, and when you open files, you get all your layers flipped open.
So for me paste in front works great for pasting a mask directly above the element you want to mask. Unfortunatley paste in front does not work well with sublayers so you will need to drag the mask down into the the sublayer. But atleast if you have a complex document with many sublayers, the paste in fornt gets you close.
eg; Mask is in clipboard, I select sublayer Illinois
After doing a paste in front, the mask (star shape) is not in the sublayer, but above
Drag the star shape down one in to the sublayer Illinois, select entire sublayer(use radio button right of the layer name)
    and make clip mask

  • How to undo permanent applying clipping mask,

    Hello,
I hope somebody can help me.
I'm having some trouble with the adjustment layers.
I've made a selection that I want to brighten a bit, and then I make a selection in the wanted area, and choose "curves" in the adjustmenlayers to brighten the selected area.
Then I also want to remove a little red, from only that selected area, and then i choose "colorbalance" and I "alt-click" between to two layers to adjust only the wanted area and not the whole picture, and it shows by a little "broken arrow" that it uses the previous layer to create the clipping mask.
And that just works so great!
    But not any more!
Because now it suddently applies this clippingmask permannetly - without me "alt-clicking". So, now when i choose "curves" the little broken arrow is there! And that annoys me big time, because I can't figure out how to make it stop. I know that I can "right-click" and click "release clippingmask" but my point is, I don't wanna do that, I want to make it stop doing that, unless I tell it to, by "alt-clicking" betwwen the layers.
I've browes severeal forums, and the only thing I can find is how to make the clippingmask, not how to undo it (Undo it permanently, that is...)
It must me some kind of settings... But I can't figure it out. Can somebode please help me?
    Thank you
    /Hanne

  • [AI CS4 Mac] How to Create a Layer Clipping Mask?

    Hi Folks,
How does one go about creating a layer clipping mask using the SDK?
What I want to do is to simulate clicking on the "Make/Release Clipping Mask" button (the left-most picture button) that is at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
    Thanks!
    -- Jim

Clipping masks work, but they can be a little clunky (as you might tell from their weird way of being set up). You might find opacity masks more flexible. An opacity mask is basically a group attached to a layer, in which you store paths that represent holes in the mask. These holes have an opacity value for how much shows through. So anything in the mask group is a hole (there can be many) and anything in the layer (as normal) shows through those holes. Setting it up is simpler but it depends on the kind of clipping you're trying to do which is easier. We find it easier when doing knockouts for labels on lines, but clipping paths are also possible, just a little more annoying.

  • How do I make a clipping mask static?

I have a group of objects that move around within a 700x500 px artboard. The size of one object within this group is a map that spills over outside the artboard. I want this group to only be 400 px high, but not change anything withing the group. Just shorten the height of the clip. When I tried to just clip the height to 400 the clipping obviously followed the zooming of the animation of the group. I want the hight to be static at 400 when the animation plays.
Any ideas? Do I need a second clipping mask like I would have added if I worked in Illustrator? So I could move a whole group within a static clipping mask. If so, how do I create one?

"1) remove the clip set to the group"
How? When I mark the group and then click on clipping tool (only why I know to mark the clipping mask) I can´t delete it without deleting the entire group.
    "2) use style="overflow:hidden" instead of use style="overflow:visible"
But that´s on the stage? It´s already set at hidden there. I don´t want to change the height of the stage.

  • Pasting images without clipping masks.

I often capture portions of my screen and paste them into Illustrator but they almost always get an unwanted clipping mask appended to them which I then hollow point select and delete EVERY time so I can simply move my images without having to worry about also moving annoying clipping masks. Does anyone know how I can simply paste my screenshots without a silly clipping mask coming along for the ride?
(17" "Unibody" MacBook Pro Illustrator CS3)

Wade, I fully understand the method you're proposing. I'm just saying it's comparatively cumbersome. It's more steps and way more mouse mileage See, You're saying I should...
    1) Capture a screen region to the desktop (Cmd,Shift,4) then
    2) Bring Illustrator to the foreground (Cmd,Tab)
    3) Bring the finder to the foreground (Cmd,Tab)
    4) Navigate to the desktop (Click)
    5) Drag & Drop the screenshot into Illustrator (Click,Drag)
    6) Delete the screenshot from the desktop (Cmd,Delete) and
    7) Empty the trash (Cmd,Option,Shift,Delete).
    Instead of...
    1) Capture a screen region to the clipboard (Cmd,Option,Shift,4)
    2) Bring Illustrator to the foreground (Cmd,Tab)
    3) Paste the screenshot (Cmd,V)
Then, only because CS3 adds a senseless clipping mask...
    4) Select the hollow arrow (A)
    5) Select the unwanted clipping mask (Click)
    6) Delete the clipping mask.
I'm simply asking the community if there's a way to avoid those last 3 steps and make Illustrator behave the way it did before the CS era.
Ok, that's all the time I have except to thank anyone with an answer.

  • P.S.Elements. How do i use the clipping mask for painting? I can't quite apply it for anything.

I'm wondering if the clipping mask can be used for painting on layers. I can't get it to do anything. I'm rendering race car paint schemes. Elements doesn't have paths. I have Gimp but I want to stick with photoshop. Something about Gimp I just didn't feel it

Could you give an example of what you are trying to do ?
The concept of clipping mask is not intuitive at all. Besides 'normal' layer masks associated with their layer, the clipping mask is a 'normal' layer having transparency. It has a what was called a 'linked layer' in older version. The 'clipping mask' layer determines transparency of the linked layer (which is shown offset to the right in the layers panel) to show that the effect of the clipping mask is limited to the above linked layer(s). Instead of having one layer with a mask, you have a mask targetting the 'above' layer.
The difference is that the normal mask uses greyscale values to represent transparency while the clipping mask has real transparency.
So, the purpose being masking, I don't see how you could use it to paint ?

  • Align layers according to masks

I'm working on a mosaic image in which each "tile" is a masked photo. The pre-masked photos are all different sizes, but the mask I'm using on each photo is the same, so the net effect is that there are all these identically-sized squares.
I'm trying to align the rows and columns according to the mask shapes -- you know, line up all the squares neatly. But it's not working because it wants to align according to the PRE-masked contents of the layers, which of course are all different sizes, so that's totally useless. I've looked and looked, and there does not seem to be a way to align layers according to the masks. I just can't believe this, this is such a simple request, is there seriously no way to do this??
Many thanks to anyone who can help!

One solution might be to create the boxes using the Rectangle Tool and arrange them into a grid using the align tools (turn on Auto Select to make it easier to grab the boxes). Then add each photo above its relevant box and create a clipping mask by option-clicking between the photo and the rectangle layer.
Finally, in case they need to be rearranged, link the photo and rectangle layers in the layers panel flyout menu.
You could also snap guides to the boxes. If you need to move a box, first link the photo and rectangle layers then select just the rectangle in the layers panel and drag with the Move Tool (switch Auto Select off for this).

  • How do I make a clipping mask in InDesign?

I know Photoshop can make use of a clipping mask to allow text or other shapes to be filled with images/pictures. How does Indesign do this?
Is there a way to add inner and outer borders to text in InDesign? Any info would help.

Have a look in the ID help text:
    Help > Index > C > Clipping paths.
You can use Stroke instead of Fill or additionally.
Use the two icons in the tool palette.

  • How do you inverse a clipping mask

I'm working on a tshirt and can only use 3 colors (Green, Black and Yellow).  If you look at the attached image, I need to make the brown color that is inside of the squirrel mask out the items behind it (corn stalks, rectangle and part of the "R" in "Corn Maze".  The tshirt will be grey so once the Clipping Mask is applied, it will allow the grey tshirt to become the color for the squirrel.
The problem I'm running into is if I duplicate the squirrel and use him as a clipping mask, it does the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish.  I need to mask out everything inside the squirrel, not everything outside the squirrel.  In photoshop, I could just inverse the selection.  Not sure how to inverse a Clipping Mask.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I export with clipping mask?

    I'm a newbie to Illustrator.
I have a starburst design with a clipping mask. When I try to export as png or jpg, there is a transparent or white border around my design - where the items clipped by the clipping mask are hidden.
I have flattened the file before exporting. I have "fit to art board". I have checked the "use art board" box when exporting. Nothing removes the border. My art is 8.5 x 11, and my art board is 8.5 x 11. Any other suggestions?
    Thank you!

  • How to merge Layers without losing layer mask?

I'm trying to save a file that looks great in Photoshop and preserve it as a PNG. I'll create the image, simply "merge layers" and lose the transparency of it. How do I get my PNG to look like it does in photoshop.
The red background show through in photoshop originally...but then after "merge layers" or saving the PNG every way possible (or so I think)... the degree of transparency isn't preserved.
Below looks great. (red bleeds through nicely, good transparency)
Now doesn't look so good. (all i did was merge layers and red doesn't bleed through properly anymore, same result when saving as png)
I'm a beginner with photoshop, so keep that in mind with any solution reccomendations.
    Thanks

You see your first image before you merged everything down? From that point you just go File>save as>   then save it as  Outsource.png or what ever name you choose. you need to save it all seperated as it looks in picture one.
If you are still having issues, another way to do it is
    edit>copy merged
File>new  choose the default as it should be your image size by default.
edit>paste.  it should look just like your masked image only not masked. Then save it as a PNG.

  • Trouble with Clipping Masks

    Hello!
I created a pattern in illustrator, and then I created an object, and I wanted to fill half of the object with the pattern, so I used a clipping mask to do this.. however, now when i try to group everything together, the clipping mask in released and the pattern spills all over the artbaord... when i try to copy and paste into a new document, everything is pasted as white instead. When i try to merge the layers, the clipping mask is released...
I'm not sure how to fix this and have been searching for a solution for it. I hope you can help me figure out how to keep the clipping mask from releasing..
Also, I tried rasterizing but that doesnt work either and it makes my shapes all rough and choppy!
    Thank you

Thanks for replying but unfortunately that did not help!
I always select with the solid selection tool ^^ infact when i want to select everything i just use command+a.
Anyway, I'm still unable to group or copy the entire picture without the clipping mask releasing..

  • Clipping mask is clipping my lines and not the actual object.

Hi all,I'm using the latest CC Illustrator.
I'm so frustrated and hope someone can help me, I've already spent a few hours trying to figure this out and looked through a number of tutorials and troubleshoot forums and I cant find an answer.
How do I stop the clipping mask from clipping inside the line itself, instead of my within the object. I'm still a newbie and I know I've done something wrong somewhere. I just cant figure out what.
Here are a couple of screenshots of my problem.
The end result looks pretty cool, but since this is for an assignment, I need it to work properly.
    Help!

You are welcome. No you don't need to undo, you are on the right track, you expanded the lines in order to clip mask with a lighter image, now you need to use PathFinder to fill the holes (the turtle's shells) and clipmask them with a darker image like two turtle I created a few years ago. To use pathfinder, place a large rectangle behind the turtle expanded lines (compound path), select the expanded artwork and the rectangle and click PathFinder Divide button, at this point you will have the holes filled with paths and grouped with the original paths, so ungroup them. Then you select the newly generated paths and clip mask with a different and darker image. This attach image was done with PathFinder, pen tool and live paint. The images I used are real wood species, that I scanned into .jpg files.

  • Clipping mask vs. selection?

I want to restrict my painting to only part of an image.
    1. How is doing this with a clipping mask different from just making a selection and painting within a selection?
    2. How can I make a clipping mask to do this?
    Thanks.

Actually with anti-aliased or softened edges of a Selection multiple brush-strokes can produce a different result than if the Layer is clipping masked (or has a Layer Mask).
Good point! The effect would be the same as painting once each on multiple, stacked clipping masks? I think it would. My point was that selection = clipping mask = layer mask (something which interests me greatly). I wonder if there are any other ways in which they're not the same.
