How to always start up in disk select mode?

How do I do that? Sometimes when I need to start my bootcamp partition to make some changes to Windows, and I just forgot to hold the Option key, I'll just have to wait for it to boot up in Mac OS, and then restart again. How do I just make the computer always start up in disk select mode, so I don't have to hold the Option key?

the only way to do that is by using rEFIt

  • How do I start up from disk utilitie.

My Mail keeps crashing. It seems to be a permission problem. I want to start up from Disk Utilities to fix it. Can't remember how.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • How do you start up from disk

My 2007 iMac has become very sluggish.  The little colorful round ball justs spins and spins so much now.  I went to Disk Utility and for the first time selected verify disk.  Part way through the verification I got an error message telling me "The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.", "Error: this disk needs to be repaired.  Start up y...isc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."  The problem apparently comes from "invalid volume file count" and "invalid volume directory count".
I am sure this is a simple task for most but I am unsure how to proceed.  I have my original OS X Leopard disk and my upgraded OS X Snow Leopard disc. Any direction in how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Before you do ANYTHING make sure you have a good a backup. I see you have a Time Capsule to check to see if your backup is OK.
Next Insert the original Leopard Install disk in the Superdrive. Restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Install Disk. Select the language then click the Utilities Menu and choose Disk Utility. Run Repair Disk from there, you will need to run Repair Disk multiple times until no errors are found. If you continue to get errors take the machine into an Apple Store or AASP to have the HD replaced. Make sure you let them know  you have been backing up on Time Capsule and want to restore your backup from there.

  • How do I start Desktop Firefox in Offline Mode (if possible)?

Currently using Firefox 21* with 64-bit Windows 7 Pro SP1:
If I enable File > Work Offline, then Firefox will not retain the setting for the next launch. So it will always access the Internet (and complain if it can't) every time that it launches. There is no reason to do that, since security vulnerabilities in Firefox are ordinarily exploited only while it is accessing the Internet.
Although I am hesitant to edit about:config I can do that if I need to, but I don't know which line(s) I would need to change.
It would be best if I can launch Firefox with a command-line parameter to start with Work Offline. If so, I could launch it with a Windows shortcut which has that parameter in the Command field. However, Firefox command-line documentation ( https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options ) seems a bit outdated, and discloses that it is incomplete.
If memory serves, there used to be a way to do this, but I cannot recall the method. :-(
Thank-you for your time and attention to this matter.
    * PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER TO TELL ME TO UPGRADE TO FIREFOX 22.!! As I have stated in other contexts, Firefox 22 requires me to spend far, far too much time and effort constantly "adjusting" the view and magnification of text and/or of images. IE 10 for Windows 7 has exactly the same problem and I returned to running MSIE 8. The Firefox workaround is a kludge that does not produce a satisfactory outcome. The assertion that we can continue using the Firefox 21 display by configuring that feature is either wrong, or the setting is broken. IT IS NOT A SOLUTION!! If the Mozilla developers refuse to allow us to *disable* this "improvement" and continue using the Firefox 21 display, then we will be looking for another browser that doesn't waste so much of our time just trying to get it to work right. THANK-YOU for respecting my point-of-view even if you cannot see it.

'''Update:''' I have found a command-line parameter which will do this:
    (1) Create a Windows shortcut for firefox.exe. Right-click on the desktop, select New, then select Shortcut and Browse to the location of ''firefox.exe''.
    (2) Save the shortcut to the desktop. Then right-click on it, and select Properties.
    (3) In the Target field, add -offline after the closing quotation mark and separate the parameter from the end of the string in quotes with a space.
    Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -offline
When Firefox is launched with this shortcut, it displays a dialog to announce that it is offline and cannot access the Internet, and wants you to "Try Again". It would be nice if we could stop Firefox from displaying that dialog but I suppose that it will suffice to just close it.
Now if I can make that the *default* way to launch Firefox, that would be great!

  • Booting in disk-selection mode

    Hi,
Since the release of the developer preview of Lion, I have been dual-booting my MacBook, meaning that I have to hold down the alt-key (or opt-key) choose which partition of my hard drive to load.
I was wondering wether there was a way to make my Mac always boot as if I held down alt. This would have a lot of advantages, since it would always ask for my firmware-password, making my mac safer, and I could turn on auto-login, speeding up the boot-process.
I thought I found a way when I read on the internet about the nvram-command. With this, you can change certain settings in your pram, for example making your mac boot in verbose mode every time with "nvram boot-args="-v" ". This is getting close, yet I can't find a way...
    Thanks in advance,
    Matthias

    Thanks for your reply.
I have used rEFIt before, and it is not compatible with firmware protection, which I believe would make my mac safer because the firmware password is to be entered before the loading of the OS, whichever that is. There are many ways to get past an OS login without knowing the password, yet I have never heard of a way to get past firmware protection.
For some reason, rEFIt did not seem to work in this case, probably because I have only one OS on my hard drive, albeit 2 different versions of it. It is a great solution for people who want to dual-boot with Windows or Linux though, as I have done before.
    Thanks again.

    Apps open after boot
If that doesn't work, try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Will not start up with the selected start-up disk

I had two hard drives in my Mac Pro, a 250GB main drive and a 500GB back up drive dedicated to Time Machine. The 250GB was getting full.
I added a new 1TB hardrive and moved Time Machine to the new 1TB drive using the restore tab of Disk Utility following instructions I found on the internet, including renaming the 500 GB drive. That all worked fine.
Once I felt that was working I erased the 500GB drive and then cloned the 250 GB main drive to the 500GB drive, again using the restore tab of Disk Utility. I then changed the start up disk to the 500GB drive. It worked fine except it seemed like the white screen lasted too long at start-up.
I planned to then erase the 250 GB once I was comfortable everything was working fine.
After a few software upgrades, I found that after a shutdown, the computer would start up on the old main (250 GB) drive, which I had yet to erase, not the 500GB dive. The 500GB drive is selected as the start-up disk under system prefernces. After restart it would start up on the corrected (500 GB ) dive but now it refuses to start up on the selected 500 GB drive at all and starts up on the 250 instead, even though it is not the selected start up drive under system preferences.
    Help?

    Thanks for the advice.
Reboot with option and pointing to correct start-up drive did start up to correct start-up drive.
I reset the PRAM and pointed to the correct hard drive in system preferences, but upon start-up it again booted to the wrong drive.
I disconnected the USB connection to my Epson 1280 and restarted, but it started up with the wrong drive.
I then did a shut down and start up (USB connection to my Epson 1280 still disconnected) and it did boot to the correct start-up drive.
    What's with that?

This solved my questionRe: Calendar Travel Time Starting from Work when I want to Start from Home Oct 23, 2013 8:43 PM (in response to theglenlivet12)
    From Calendar's help:
To set your starting location, Calendar first looks for your location in any events that are up to three hours before this event. If Calendar doesn’t find a location, it uses your work address during work hours and your home address during other hours. (Your work hours are set in Calendar preferences using the “Day starts at” and “Day ends at” menus.) If your card in Contacts doesn’t have your addresses, Calendar uses your computer’s current location.

just bough OSX Mountain Lion, my laptop operating with v10.6.8.  Can't install OSX Mountain Lion, on the disk selection screen i cant select the Macintosh HD to install OSX giving a message (This disk cannot be used to start up your computer).only have one disk to select and my partition map scheme is GUID partition table. 24.44gb disk available.

Verify your computer can run Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Open Disk Utility and verify the drive is partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If it is then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Now try installing Mountain Lion.

How do I remove the grey "contact" selection highlight?  This contact always appears as the email address for the address book group I want to send to.

The group is "undisclosed" there are 6 contacts in the group. The contacts are listed in 2nd column entitled "name", one of these contacts remains highlighted or selected in grey. I can't remove the grey selection of the contact.   When you select the "undisclosed" group as the "to" address the contact highlighted in grey appears in the email address box.  The group name should appear in the email box, but it doesn't.  This began to happen after I upgraded to IOS 10.6.8.  However I'm not sure that has anything to do with the problem?  I do not have "show all member addresses selected."  Your help is appreciated.
