How to Apply Color to Placed .PNG file in AI_CS2 & keep Transparency?

So unfortunately I'm stuck with CS2, but it sure beats not having it at all.
I'm importing a graphic icon that was saved from Photoshop as a .PNG file with transparency into AI_CS2. (I can open the .PNG and resave it with any options or as a different format as suggested.)
Once I import this image, I'd like to apply particular swatches to it. However, I find I can only apply a swatch after I've run LiveTrace. My problem is that after I've done so, I lose the transparency that is essential to this icon.
Can anyone assist me? I'd be much indebted to you!
FYI, ultimately I plan on saving this as a graphic .EPS to import into InDesign CS2.
Thank you! Please let me know if there are any clarifications I can make.
Peace,
Carrie Anne
CS2, MacOSX 10.4

For ease of discussion, I'm just going to reveal the graphic here. I really think I ought to be able to color something so simple. I've gone back into Pshop & converted this to grayscale (the original was cut from something with color in it).
After placing it in AI, I still can't apply a color, and once I run LiveTrace, if I apply a color, it colors the entire bounding box, not just the inside of the path. Same is true even if I choose MagicWand and select the inside area first. What else do I need to do? Is there a path option I need to choose after running LiveTrace? Thanks!
(FYI, I'm inserting a .gif here b/c the .png file appeared with black in the background, and grey fill in the panther. This should be a black panther with a transparent background, if it doesn't work here, hopefully you get the point.)

  • How do you open and save PNG files as images rather than a document (which my MacBook is doing automatically)?

    Hi,
Basically I'm doing a course in which i need to import images on a document for evidence (in particular Cirque Du Soleil, yes it's a weird course!) I am using the develop menu tab and using the Inspect Element menu. Here i have found loads of images that are perfect for my evidence, but the images are all showing as PNG files. Whenever I try to save these they will only save as Documents and not images. How can I change this so I can save them as images and import them imto Pages.
    Many Thanks

  • Placed .png files in look blurry in InDesign CS6 & output PDF

I'm brand new to InDesign...just learned it yesterday. I'm using CS6. However, I think I'm following best practices as I've watched many instructional videos and have a folder of images I'm using in the document which I place in the document using "File" -> "Place." I've both put them into frames that already exist (and used "Object" -> "Fitting" and often "Fit frame proportionally" but also other commands) as well as without a frame where I drag a window the size I'd like the file to be after I've loaded up my cursor using "File" -> "Place."
I'm at a loss as my files are 72 DPI and 144 DPI (I'm on a Mac and have checked them out both in Photoshop and using "Tools" -> "Inspector" in Preview) and I have NO idea why they look so terrible in both InDesign and my output pdf! I'm attaching both the files I'm placing and screenshots of what they look like in the output .PDF.
Thanks SO MUCH for any help anyone can give me--I'm working on an urgent project and must figure this out!

This info was quite helpful--thanks everyone!
First of all, I'm not entirely sure I chose the right tool for this job, and advice on this would be welcome. I wanted a document of portfolio pages formatted sort of like a book, so I thought it would be better to use InDesign rather than something like Photoshop or Illustrator (I've learned these tools in the last year but haven't really used them to create documents). My primary goal, however, was to present this information both from my computer and on my website, and a secondary goal was for it to be able to print nicely. So I thought InDesign was the right choice. (I read this article from 2010: Adobe Photoshop vs. Illustrator vs. Indesign | Dream Infinity Studios / Chris Takakura | Art Direction + Design to get some guidance...hopefully most of it is still relevant.) Because of that I wasn't sure whether to use "Intent" -> "Print" or "Intent" -> "Web", so I went with web with a 1024 x 768 page size, hoping that will look OK for desktop (not professional) printing. What do people do when they want something to function in both domains? Not sure if that could have affected anything about the way these images were placed...
In terms of finding a solution:
    1. I was using High Quality Display--it was more an issue with my output document. (Though strangely sometimes when I toggle between high-quality & typical displays, sometimes things that looked good when I was working on them in high quality, after toggling to typical and back, look horrid.)
    2. It seemed at first that it might be an issue of the way I placed the files, e.g. I was positioning my cursor OUTSIDE any sort of field and dragging a square to the size I wanted my image to be. I'm wondering if it somehow reduced the image size because if I create the square using the "Rectangle Frame Tool" it seemed to work much better. I've also tried just dropping the file without the frame tool and resizing it that way, but my images are actually VERY long & wide, so that's difficult. I was also wondering the "fitting" option I chose may have been affecting the display...I've been trying "Fitting" -> "Fit Content Proportionally" lately.
    3. I created some .pdfs of some of the pings from Omnigraffle, and that seemed to help, but that actually makes them look worse because there are screenshots within the OmniGraffle mock-up files which are washed out and pixelated and the text that was added on top stands out too much (see attached screenshot...the one on top is a PDF and the header and footer looks funny and the bottom is a PNG where at least everything looks consistent).
So though some files look better now (especially, ironically enough, the 72 DPI screenshot of Use Cases!), I can't figure out what process I should follow to get consistently good results. Because a) the mockup files look good when I first paste them, and b) they are longer and wider than the content area I'm using and I'm shrinking them significantly, I cannot figure out why I can't keep that level of detail after they've been shrunk to fit. I keep wondering if I'm placing image properly, shrinking them properly, or those Fitting settings properly...

  • Labels do not apply on PSD and PNG files

We have just started using Bridge CS3 at work. It seems we can't apply labels to PNG and PSD files.
Is this a known thing with Bridge, and can it be fixed?
As it's unlikely we'll be able to patch Bridge, as our IT department doesn't like that sort of thing, are there any potential workarounds?
I only have Indesign CS3 and Bridge CS3 installed on my machine - not other parts of CS3, or earlier versions of the software.
In advance, thanks for your replies.
    - Richard
    Mac OS 10.4.11
    Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    3GB RAM
    Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9
    Adobe Indesign CS3 5.0.2

Don't know about PNG's, don't have them but PSD do label fine, rating stars as well as assigning color to it.
If you have the files on your own workstation and not on a network folder and they are also not locked they should just accept labels I would think.
2.1.1.9 is the latest version so there is nothing to 'patch', but you should try a purge cache for folder option using the tools menu.
If still not able then refresh preferences with holding down option key while restarting Bridge and choose refresh preferences, after restarting Bridge reset prefs to your needs, restart Bridge again and try if you are able to label the files.

  • How to prevent color banding in AVCHD files on import?

    Hi!
I am trying to import some 1080 60i AVCHD files from my Panasonic G3 camera into iMovie '11. Once the files are imported they show very strong color banding/pixelation, that does not show up if I play the clips on the same computer/screen directly from the SD card in Quicktime player. Here is a screenshot from of the original frame, and here is exported movie.
I am using all default setting for export to Quicktime movie (1080 HD, "Best" quality).
For import I tried so far:
    1. Import into iMovie at full quality from the SD card;
    2. rewrap AVCHD into MOV (with ClipWrap) without resampling then import
    3. convert AVCHD to Apple Intermediate codec (with Clip Wrap), then import
    No difference!
Is it even possible to avoid such banding/pixelation with iMovie or another video editor that's available for free/cheap? If yes, how is it done?
Here is a 40 Mb mts file if you want to try to test your method: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40852067/00011.MTS

  • How to fix colors in a pages file so they are correct when printed professionally

I created bus cards in pages and when I recieved them from the printer the colors were very muted and washed out compared to my monitor.  How can I fix this when I reorder them so I get the colors that I want?

    > don't confuse the O.P. There is no way you can print exactly what you see on the screen, paper will never match that
    > That means still only optimally approximating what you see on screen.
General questions on ICC colour management can be posted on at www.color.org for answer by Dr Phillip Green of the London College of Printing. Specific questions on ICC colour management implementation in Apple Mac OS X can be posted to the Apple ColorSync Users list or to Apple Discussions for particular application products.
In general, with a photographic print (to reflective paper or transparent film) and a separations camera (Esko, Agfa, Kodak) in the nineteen-seventies or a colour separations scanner (Crosfield, ****, Screen, Scitex) in the nineteen-eighties, there was a viewable graphic as reference between the photographer and the lithographer.
Interchange formats for images (TIFF, JPEG, PNG and more), for page descriptions (PostScript, PDD, PDF and more), and internationalised connectivity infrastructure have brought about a situation where colourants in pixel patterns and scalable vector shapes are distributed in blind interchange.
In a digital scan or digital camera capture, there is no viewable graphic on a physical medium. There is only colourant data in a colourant format (emissive and additive RGB, reflective and subtractive CMY, CMYK, CcMmYK, Gray, for instance).
Australian metaphysics aside, it is an impossible proposition that there be no interchange of colourimetry interchange in order that interchange of colourants be supported by specification of the colours intended to be formed by those colourants on digital graphic devices.
A photographer working in Australia has no possible way of anticipating what devices are available to audiences in Austria, or what configuration those devices have (gamma setting for displays, paper selection for printers, for instance).
What the photographer does is Create Once, Convert Many: Colour correct the exposure using the ICC device profile for the capture device, convert into a suitable interchange space, and don't change the colourants on disk ever again.
The ICC colour management system will pluc the input colourimetry specification into a subregion of the PCS Profile Connection Space, plug the output colourimetry specification into a subregion of the PCS Profile Connection Space, and task the CMM Colour Management Module to convert the pixels.
The display used by the photographer is the destination device in the photographer's ColourWorld and the displays used by the audience are the destination devices in the ColourWorlds they create with the device profiles for their custom configurations.
The display colour space is not interchanged, it is only invoked locally for - surprise, surprise - display. The interchange colourimetry space defines which colours can be output, because it is impossible to output colours that cannot be defined in the interchange colourimetry space.
If the CIEL*a*b* D50 colourimetry for 10% Cyan on glossy paper under ISO 12647 cannot be defined in sRGB, then the photographer who chooses sRGB as interchange colourimetry space cannot provide that colour even if the colour in principle could be rendered on a given device.
Precisely the same pertains for transliteration in small character sets such as ANSI X3.4–American Standard Code for Information Interchange. For instance, ASCII cannot input æ, Æ as in Hans Christian Andersens Keiserens nye Klæder, Eng. The Emperor's New Robes, so æ, Æ cannot be interchanged.
Whether the user locally has a good viewing condition, a mediocre viewing condition or a madcap viewing condition is immaterial to the working of the ICC colour management system for interchange of colourimetry information.
Colour management as such is not a craft or art, but a science. Art is part of the science of colour management in that there is no science that says which way is best for vectoring colours outside a destination gamut into that destination gamut.
Thus no two profiling packages will vectorize out of gamut colours precisely the same, nor will any two colour correctors. Similarly, no two type designers will vectorize (kern) interglyph spacing the same, because that is part of visual art and not part of science.
In general, please post proper technical information on ICC colour management. Posting that colour communication for blind interchange in information society is impossible is helpful to no-one, and is simply non-sense from the start.
    /hh

  • How to Determine Color types in a file?

How can we tell if a document has any CMYK, RGB or Pantone colors within any object (curves, text, etc.)?  The requires are just to report that the document has any CMYK and/or RGB and/or Pantone colors.  We already can get the color for a bitmap image on the document, it's the other objects on the document.
    Thanks...

What I do to make a quick check of a Document is open the Document Info panel. If you want to see what is an object, select only that object, if you want to see what is in all objects select all. In the Document Info panel fly out menu (upper right corner of the panel) select Object to see information on number of objects and what colors are used. If you want to see what Spot Colors are used select the Spot Color Objects from this same fly out menu. Hope this helps but it sounds like you may need more robust preflight tools.

  • How to apply passwords to existing PDF files?

My MS-Access app creates about 1000 pdf files.  Each file is required to have a unique password and will be emailed as attachments via a VBA procedure in Outlook 2007.    Certificates are not feasible, despite my objections.  So I am looking at having to manually set the 'Open File' password for each file individually.  The files are created in an Access '97 VBA procedure (by sending the results of an Access Report to the Adobe PDF Printer).  Is there any way with VBA (either Access '97 or Outlook '07) to apply a unique security policy or otherwise set a unique 'Open File'  password for each of the files, either as they are being created and saved - or after the fact?
I can create an Action in PRO X and manually select all the files and set the passwords.  I can then encrypt and password-protect all the files at once - but they all get the same passwords - ok for 'Permissions', but not for 'Open'.  Can Action fileds be modified from VBA?  Or is there a way to creat an Action that can modify another Action?  For example, if there is an Action named "Apply Pswd" which will apply a predefined common set of passwords to all files selected, can there be an Action, named "Apply Unique Pswd" that will update the 'Open' password field in the "Apply Common Pswd" Action as well as the name of the individual file that is to have that password?  Sort of like passing parameters to a function.  i.e.:
    "Apply Unique Pswd":
    1. Get next .pdf file from directory.
    2. Get next password (whether caluclated or read from a list).
    3. Open the "Apply Common Pswd" Action.
    4. Change the 'Open' password and the name of the file to select (the 'Permissions' password does not change).
    5. Execute the "Apply Common Password" Action - which at this time is only affecting a single file.
    6. Verify the 'Open' password (or bypass the verify step, if possible).
    7. Loop through all files in the directory.
       or
    3.   Don't use Actions - save the .pdf file in such a way that the common 'Permissions' password and the current 'Open' password are applied to the appropriate file.
    3a. Goto 7.
I have also investigated Secure Envelopes in Outlook, but again, it appeas to be a manual procedure to apply unique passwords.
I would greatly appreciate any tips, suggestions, snippits, or ideas - or enlightenment that it is just not possible to create .pdf files with passwords in VBA nor to use VBA to set the passwords post-creation.

  • How to add colors to a CSV file?

    Hi there,
I'm exporting data to a CSV file using printWriter.
Question: is it possible to add colors, bold text or stretch the length of a column in the produced CSV file?
This, of course, should be the end result of the file (not do it when the file is open)
    Thank you!

    xianwinwin wrote:
Question: is it possible to add colors, bold text or stretch the length of a column in the produced CSV file?Of course if you assumed that you'd be looking at the file with a fixed-width font, you could insert a bunch of tabs or spaces to get columns to match up, but I strongly advise you not do that. I think of CSV as a poor-man's excel data file or perhaps a flat database file, but most importantly it holds data in a standard format that can be read and manipulated by many different programs, including ones you write yourself. It is not meant to be for pretty visualization. Try to pretty it up and you possibly ruin it's main reason for existing. For nice visualization I'd create a small app that read the CSV, formatted it nicely and either displayed the data or stored it in some pretty format as a non-CSV file.
