How to apply windows 2012 r2 supported gpo on windows 2008 r2

Hi All,
am currently applying "Redirect folders on primary computers only" polciy that allow you to control your folder redirection to one primary computer account
this policy can be only applied on windows 8 & windows server 2012.
is there any way to apply this policy on windows 7 & windows server 2008 R2
this link describes the configuration applied
http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/03/30/configuring-primary-computers-for-folder-redirection-and-roaming-profiles-in-windows-server-8-beta.aspx
thanks

no
Yes!
For user profiles: No.
For folder redirection: Yes.
It is straight forward by using GPP "Registry" and item level targeting with an LDAP query for the msds-primarycomputer attribute of the user account which has to contain the computername, then modify shell folders and user shell folders accordingly
and don't forget to populate the csc cache, too, if "do not make redirected folders available offline" is not enabled (another bunch of reg values).
If you don't believe it works: I verified this for the "samples" chapter (chapter 10) of my book - I prepared a sample on "how to implement language independent Folder redirection for downlevel operating systems", especially Windows XP.
You have to create the folders through GPP "Folders" - otherwise it will not work. And in my sample, I used the HomeDirectory attribute instead of the msds-primarycomputer for my ILT, but it works the same way:
One side effect: It is NOT possible to redirect to a new server (or back to local) without manually copying the previous content.

Existing GPOs don't take care of ADM(X) templates as long as you don't
edit them, so yes, they will continue to work perfectly.
THere was an issue in WIndows Vista with ADMX from WIn7 or above (Vista
doesn't support the new reg_multi_sz possibilities introduced with W7),
but W7/W8/W8.1 all support the newest ADMX templates.

  • Windows Azure Platform Support: "Prompted for "Windows Activation" when logging onto a Windows Azure Role Instance using RDP"

    Symptom
When a user interactively logs (using RDP client) on to a Windows Azure Role Instance running Windows Azure Guest OS 1.11, they see a “Windows Activation” dialog box.
    Action
The user can ignore this dialog box by simply clicking either “Cancel” or “Activate Later” button on the “Windows Activation” dialog box. This pop-up window is just an UI issue in Guest OS 1.11 and no OS functionality
issue. All Role instances running any version of Windows Azure Guest OS has valid volume licensing key and are already activated. There is no need to provide any activation key to validate the OS.
Please don’t try to activate Windows Azure Guest OS using your Windows Server OS Key, this will cause unexpected downtime and will require a reboot. Activating Windows Azure Guest OS is not a supported scenario.
    Workaround
Use the next available OS or any previous version of OS (e.g., 1.10) to work around this issue.

  • ACS 5.5 and Windows 2012 AD support

    Hi All,
previously I had two AD domains based on 2008 and had machines in one domain and users in another domain
and the condition statement "Was machine authenticated=True" worked fine when doing EAP-TLS machine then user
    authentication.
I have now upgraded the machine's domain to 2012 and  machine authentication works fine and user authentication
also works, but when you put the two together, and enable "Was machine authenticated=True" the ACS errors
out when doing user authentication with the message "ACS unable to find previous successful machine authentication"
even though machine authentication was successful. I have tried with with ACS being a member of both 2008 and 2012 domains at each stage.
The clients are all windows 8.1
Has anyone encountered this scenario before ?

I currently have a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server running and I am looking to add a Windows Server 2012 R2 server to it. All I see when I google the setup is only for Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS, cant find anything to integrate with a current 2008 R2 Terminal
    Server.
Can anyone help with this or point me to a blog I possibly missed?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your comment.
Yeah, agree with diramoh; as already commented. If you want user session from RDS Server 2012 R2 then you need to  install RDS License role on server 2012 R2, purchase and install RDS CAL (per user or per device) according your requirement and then you
can use user session for server 2012 R2 and also for lower version.
But as you already have Server 2008 R2 RDS CAL, then with that you can simply access lower version but can’t manage Server 2012\R2.

  • Windows 2012 ISO customization

    Hi All,
I have a Windows 2012 x64 ISO, and the size of the ISO is 5.7 GB and it has the following below editions
    1. Windows 2012 Standard edition
    2. Windows 2012 Standard Core Edition
    3. Windows 2012 Datacenter Edition
    4. Windows 2012 Datacenter Core Edition
We are trying to build a custom ISO only with 1 edition and want to reduce the ISO size by removing the 2,3,4 editions mentioned in the above table
We just want a simple "Windows 2012 Standard Edition ISO" size needs to be reduced to a great extent
We are using Deployment Workbench where in certain drivers, packages, updates are being incorporated into the ISO and later trying to build an ISO from it.
When we IMPORT the OS into the Deployment Share in the workbench we see 4 editions, each edition size is around 1GB.
We deleted the 3 editions and built a ISO media out of it but found the ISO to be around 5GB again.
Can anyone please suggest on how to delete the editions and build a customized ISO including only "Windows 2012 Standard Edition"
    Thank you,

    Hi Rexton84,
I agree with Tim, and you can export the wim edition then use Oscdimg Command-Line Options to create the ISO.

    Peter,
I recommend to remove the Windows 2012 R2 server out of the farm and redeploy on W2008 R2.
This issue does not have an easy fix.
Summarizing, this appears to be the issue:
    1. Windows Management Framework 3.0 is integrated with Windows 2012 R2, which installs .NET 4 and Powershell 4.0. Not uninstallable.
    2. The Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell is not supported with Powershell 4.0.
    3. The SCOM SP2010 MP puts a package on the defined farm server and when the agent launches the package, it calls Powershell (v4 in theis case) and errors out. The target W2012 server will have an Error 0 in the Operations Manager Event log. See below.
    Options:
    1. Work around maybe - Develop method for manual discovery (I'm working on that now).
    2. Rebuild SP2010 farm on Windows 2008 R2
    3. System Center Team - Write a new MP to down version Powershell (Powershell.exe -Version 2)
    4. Powershell Team - Write a SharePoint Snapin for Powershell 4

  • Windows 7 Client 'sees' an old version of windows 2012 server share

    Hi All,
I have a problem which seems to be a common theme looking at other threads. Here's the overview of the problem:-
I have multiple windows 7 clients and a windows 8.1 client within a 2008 Server in a domain.
I also have a Windows 2012R2 Server which is not joined to the domain. There is a Share on the 2012R2 which has the Caching Option turned off. Everyone full control on Share & File permissions.
One of the Windows 7 machines in Explorer when it looks at
\\2012server\share sees an old version of the folder. It seems that SMB 2 chaching is working too well. Not even pressing F5 or clicking View, Refresh updates windows explorer.
It took a reboot to get the workstation to see the up to date contents of the share on the 2012 server.
We don't seem to have that behaviour with that client against the 2008 server.
I have seen this behaviour on another machine un-related to us at another location which was in a workgroup with a 2012 server and no domain.
    Questions:-
Is there some sort of problem with Windows 7 workstations working against 2012 Servers in a non-domain setting or is it just Windows 7 against 2012 servers period?
I understand that Windows 7 utilises SMB1 & SMB2. SMB2 introduced caching. If the server has turned off the share cache option should the client cache the contents of the share or the information about the files & folders & 'file not found'
    information?
I want to open a file handle to a file on a network share so I can read and write data to it. But I also want to know that when I look at the folder to open the file I'm actually looking at the live version of the folder and files in the folder and
not a cached version of the folder. If it's a cached version the file might be there already but I won't see it.
Is there an API call that tells the client to get a fresh view of the server share so I can be absolutely sure that when I look for a file on the server I'm getting the correct answer and not one from cache.
I first posted the question with the same subject "Windows 7 Client 'sees' an old version of windows 2012 server share" in the Windows 7 Networking Fourm
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/23bf3627-987b-4c27-8062-85a284a2cda4/windows-7-client-sees-an-old-version-of-windows-2012-server-share?forum=w7itpronetworking and it was suggested I repost in here. Please do take the time to read
the thread which will save time with suggestions that have already been covered.
As the computers that can be affected by this problem are not mine I cannot enforce or guarantee that any of my 'client base' will apply any hotfixes. I will also not have the ability to tweak registry settings as I can't guarantee Admin Access.
It seems that we need to go back to SMB1 as all the tweaks to SMB since those days have introduced problems with the basic requirement of sharing files from a share on a server for Read/Write purposes. I have tried turning a network back to SMB1 and that
has resolved a lot of the issues but then I found a post/MS blog that states not to leave the network on SMB1
The Caching option of the share had already been turned off. Surely Windows clients should not cache any information about the share but I think that is not the case.
    Thanks is advance
    Robert

    Hi Shaon,
    Thanks for looking into this.
If this is a known issue, why isn't the hotfix rolled into a general windows update if this is a known problem? However this doesn't just affect domain joined workstations.
Surely it's basic functionality for a networked computer to access files and folders on a network file server. It's what networks were invented for at the end of the day.
I am unable to apply hotfixes to these computers that are having the problem due to the fact they are not mine but my customers.
At one of my customers sites I disabled SMB2 from the server and network clients as well as disabling the network adapter power saving option. This seemed to resolve the issues that I saw on one client that seemed to be 30 minutes behind the rest of
the network.  The hotfix you link to states that it is for Domain joined computers. At my customer site the PC's are not in a domain at all, just a workgroup with workstations and a 2012r2 server. Will the hotfix be applicable to non-domain machines?
Also many clients seemed to loose the file handle to an open file on the server. I'll get them to turn SMB2 back on at some point after I send out some updates but all the problems I see seem to be caused by the caching functions in SMB2. SMB1 is good and
stable. It's SMB2 that seems to be causing the problems as it was designed from the ground up for caching.
Has this networking issue been resolved in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10?
As I am unable to apply a hotfix to 1000's of PC's that are not mine, is there an API call or something where I can get the windows client to stop lying and get me the current state of a folder on the server?
Will Turning off ClientSideCaching fix the issue? HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MrxSmb\Parameters\
    CSCEnabled
Or will every machine need to be tuned individually according to the following guide:-
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/7bd9978c-69b4-42bf-90cd-fc7541ccb663/forum-faq-troubleshooting-network-file-copy-slowness?forum=winserverPN ?

  • Mount Points in Windows 2012 R2 Cluster not displaying correctly

    Hi,
    Try
and I might, I can't get Mount Points displayed properly in a Windows 2012 R2 cluster.
In Windows 2008 R2, I added them, and they appear under Storage, as for Example, Cluster Disk 7: Mounted Volume (S:\SYSDB). (I may have had to bring them offline/online).
in Windows 2012 R2, they are showing up as, for example, '\\?\Volume{7c636157-e7e9-11e4-80dc0005056873123}'
In the error log it shows up as :
Cluster disk resource 'Cluster Disk 7' contains an invalid mount point. Both the source and target disks associated with the mount point must be clustered disks, and must be members of the same group.
Mount point 'SYSDB\' for volume '\\?\Volume{7c636106-e7e9-11e4-80dc-005056873123}\' references an invalid target disk. Please ensure that the target disk is also a clustered disk and in the same group as the source disk (hosting the mount point).
Now I've checked the error, and in
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/dd353925(v=ws.10).aspx it says
"The mounted disk and the disk it is mounted onto must be part of the same clustered service or application. They cannot be in two different clustered services or applications, and they cannot be in the general pool of Available Storage in the cluster."
So I have created a 'Other Server' Role. When I go right click on the Role and go to 'Add Storage', Cluster Disk 6 (the root volume) displays S:\, and Cluster Disk 9 (hosting the mountpoint) says Mount Point(s): (S:\SYSDB). I select both, and add, but
alas, the Mount Point still shows up as '\\?\Volume{7c636106-e7e9-11e4-80dc-005056873123}\ (not S:\SYSDB or Cluster Disk 6: Mounted Volume (S:\SYSDB).) as I would expect.
They are both clustered disks (iSCSI). I would expect when it says in the "same group", both added to the same role would be in the same group.

    Hi,
Thankyou for your response. That's (sort of) good to know, but it seems to be a step backwards from Windows 2008 R2, where you would actually have the meaningful Mounted Volume: (S:\SYSDB) displayed, to the meaningless '\\?\Volume{7c636157-e7e9-11e4-80dc0005056873123}'
GUID. Obviously before you do anything, you need to cross reference the disk number to 'Disk Management'; it would be better if is was displayed correctly in Failover Cluster Manager in the first place.
Secondly, the GUID is somewhat misleading. In Windows 2008 R2 for example, it appears as though the same GUID was displayed on each node (e.g. using Mountvol.exe). In Windows 2012 R2, it appears as though different GUID's are displayed on each node, e.g.
    Node 1.
    \\?\Volume{7c6368a4-e7e9-11e4-80dc-005056873123}\
            S:\SYSDB\
    Node 2.
    \\?\Volume{97cc0d34-e7e9-11e4-80db-0050568724c4}\
            S:\SYSDB\
But the GUID in Failover cluster manager remains the same (you can't really cross reference with what you see in FCM to Mountvol).
Strangely enough, when I check the registry in 'MountedDevices' on Node 1, both of the GUIDs are displayed (even though only one is displayed in MountVol.exe),  referencing the same Disk ID listed in Diskpart.exe. I can see this mentioned in
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/959573, where is says :
A volume can be multiple unique volume names (and thus multiple GUIDs) when it is used by multiple running installations of Windows.  This could happen in the following scenarios and in similar scenarios where multiple installations of Windows have
    accessed the volume:
Using a volume on a shared disk in a cluster where multiple nodes have accessed the volume.
Oh well, that's progress I guess.

  • Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008R2 with Windows 2012 DC

    Hi All,
I am going to update DC from Windows 2003 Sp2 to Windows 2012 R2 (Add a new Windows 2012 DC at first and turn off Windows 2003 DC after). Just think about our Exchange server, which is Exchange 2007 SP3 (08.03.0297.001) on Windows 2008R2 SP1. Do I need
update Exchange to 2010 or I can keep it as is?
    Thanks,

    What service pack, what rollup?
With SP3, RU13, you should be OK for the domain controller itself:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623(v=exchg.150).aspx
    However...
The domain / forest functional level cannot be at Windows 2012 R2.
Maybe that will be supported in a future rollup (?).
