How to approach learning Flash

I Posted this in the Dreamweaver forum also, because I am
taking classes in both subjects, so here is my current situation
and question:
My progress on my own has been a crock. I'm a hack at html, a
prisoner in beginning Dreamweaver and a dunce at Flash.
The only way for me has got to be taking community college
classes this winter term on both subjects.
Meanwhile, I know there are tutorials on the web. Which are
the best one's to get me off the ground. This subject is too
important for me to not get a good education in - and right away.
How do you who have experience recommend I spend my time
before January and February of 2008 when classes will begin in my
area.
Thank You,
Ken

Ken -
DZ has a good point - you have to know where you're going
before you pack your suitcase. Pack a parka and snowshoes when
taking a cruise to Nassau and you're going to have rough seas.
You have a couple of months to play with, so do some of the
tutorials (I like www.tutorialized.com) and get a feel for how
things work, and then you can browse some of the more complex
projects and see how well you can duplicate them without being told
how. Use this forum to help out when you get stuck. If you're
fortunate enough to know someone that does Flash and/or Dreamweaver
professionally and is willing to take you under their wing, that
would be an ideal situation.
Most of us do it the old fashioned way - we read books, watch
educational videos, take classes and try to get to Carnegie Hall
(practice, practice, practice!)

  • How did you learn flash?

I have never created a website before and I want to know if
Flash will help me accomplish my goal.
I am having a devil of a time locating tutorials and books
that can help me learn what I need to know in Flash CS3.
Most of what I find is for Flash 8. I have yet to find any
tutorial to make a map like map quest that I can grab move and zoom
using a mouse. I am starting to wonder if Flash is even
capable of doing this. Can anyone point me to a book on Amazon or
a Flash CS3 tutorial. The books I have researched on Amazon
don't specifically show in the table of contents moving and zooming
    things with a mouse.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Hello ...99% of flash 8 tutorials can be used in Flash CS3
Flash CS3 hasn't changed that much, except for it's Action
    Script stuff
& its ability to import complete AI & Photoshop
    files,
dont let ActionScript 3 scare you, because it scared me at
first , its more complex than AS2
but now that Flash has resolved most of it's Action Script
    stuff
iam sure the Flash Team will have more time now
to finally put in the long awaited 3D tools ! ;o) ..then it
will be basically capable of anything
if you want to create a map quest as you say , that will have
    interaction
then you will need to learn at least the basics of
    actionscript & behaviors
other than that , if you are an artist & animator , then
Flash is the best api for that
check out cartoonsmart.com & mudbubble.com to get an idea
of the drawing power of Flash ..from there on its all up to your
    imagination my friend
the best resource book for newbies is the Help & Live
    Docs of Flash
but there are many out there that have dedicate alot of time
    creating free tutorials
also another site you might want to check out , i think it
will give you some great idea's of what you are interested in
    creating is ...www.hungrysuitcase.com ;o)

  • FAQ: How do I go about learning Flash Pro?

Because of the many different ways of using Flash Pro, and the overabundance of learning materials for it, knowing where to start is a challenge in itself.
    Here's what we recommend:
The Flash Pro Dev Center provides a guide called Five steps to learning Flash Professional. It will give you a clear sense of what to focus on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
Learning the Flash workspace - This short video provides a good overview of the workspace.
Creating your first Flash Professional CS5 document - This tutorial is a great introduction.
Introducing Flash Professional - And this video is a good intro to Flash in general.
Also, Adobe TV has a show devoted to Learning Flash Professional CS5 & CS5.5. Focus on the videos with titles that start with "GS" (for Getting Started) first.

    Srami... welcome to the forum...
your question is MASSIVELY broad and depends on your requirements and delivery expectations.
    Basically... 'best' for what?
It's helpful if you provide some details for people to assist you.

  • Learn Flash or re-learn Director

I used to do a lot of stuff in Director about 5 years ago.
Then, I stopped and did nothing but print. My new company wants me
to do some multimedia stuff and I am not sure if I should stick
with Director. I can still get around (mostly) but I have forgotten
a LOT (getting older does not help!) and it's gonna take a while to
    get back up to speed.
It looks like there is very little going on Director-wise
these days. Even on Adobe's website, you have to click into a
secondary product area to even find it! So I am wondering if maybe
I should forget about using Director and just try to learn Flash?
Am I mistaken? I sure would LIKE to be, as I have always prefered
    Director to Flash. Thanks much!
Oh, I am mostly displaying video on CD and intranet, creating
navigation for archiving pdfs and that sort of thing. Nothing
    "cutting-edge" by any stretch.

I've been using Flash for about 7 years, Director for over
    15. I've built many industrial strength applications in both. My
impression is that the average task can be approached in 50
different ways in Director, all of which will work -- and 50
different ways in Flash, only one of which will work, and you have
to go through all 49 others before you find it.
Flash also, though purportedly a designer's tool, ironically
breaks every rule of user interface design itself.
    Examples:
    - The same hotkey means different things depending on which
window is active -- and there's not always a visual indication of
    which window that is.
    - Some windows are always in front, some are not.
    - How many times does "timeline" appear in different
    cascading menus? Six? Seven?
    - The hotkeys for many (but not all) of the most commonly
used functions have vanished from the menus, even though they still
    work.
    - There are different and easily confused mouse interaction
events available for movie clips vs. buttons (e.g., press vs.
mouseDown). It would appear that rollover is not available for
movie clips, as it does not appear in Script Assist, yet it is.
    - And which of these two lines would you rather have to
    debug?
    Director: repeat with i = 1 to 100
    or
    Flash: for (i=1; i<=100; i++) {
I really didn't want to turn this into an anti-Flash screed.
All in all, I love some of what Flash can do, I really do -- but I
find it a brittle, fragile, counterintuitive environment. In my
experience, Director just works. Flash fights me every step of the
    way.
Please take with a kilo of salt, YMMV, all that...

  • SSHR reskin AKA 'How to Use Adobe Flash to Transform the Look and Feel...

There was a presentation at the OHUG 2011 Conference titled 'How to Use Adobe Flash to Transform the Look and Feel of Oracle HR Self Service'. It presented a method of 're-skinning' SSHR to present a different UI to the user.
Looking for anyone out there that has attempted to apply this to their Oracle HRSS pages. I know this company has developed (is developing?) a product based on this approach. I want to see if anyone has done it on their own and would be willing to share some details.
Follow-up question. Has anyone availed themselves of the bespoke UI Development based on this approach from Applaud Solutions (as mentioned on their website), and care to comment on your experience?

Any update on this please? Even we are looking for some pointers in this area.

  • How to maintain a flash web site

    Hello everybody,
I know about Java, Javascript, html but unfortunatly I don't
    know anything about Flash.
A friend of mine is going to create a website for my jazz
group. (the one I have created can be improved!! just have a look
at my web page and you will understand!: www.jazzcafeparis.es)
He will do it using flash.... Now, I will need to maintain
this web site (adding new links, modifing texts, adding photos,
    videos, etc).
Obviously, I don't have a clue how to do it!.... I don't even
know where to start! Could you help me please?
I don't need a tutorial explaining how to create a flash
website from the beginning. I would like to know enough to be able
to maintain this page. Later on, I will learn how to create web
page but for the time being I don't need it.
Could you advise me, please, on how I could do it, the best
    tutorials, etc.
Thank you so much for your help.

This particular problem has been reported at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=622472 I have just voted for that bug.
Since my last report one month ago above, I have found the "Report Broken Website" appears under the Help menu item, is clickable when a webpage is displayed, but just endlessly displays a "Sending Report to server" dialog. It has never worked for me since several weeks ago. The moving blue bar under "Sending Report" just keeps moving but nothing happens.

Where to start with BW Training
There are two logical entry points to the SAP BI curriculum. The first is BW305-BW Reporting. The other is BW310-BW Data Warehousing. Depending on your focus and responsibilities, you would pick the one of most interest.
BW305 is the starting point for all the reporting functions of BW. It includes both web-based and BEx Analyzer-based (MS Excel) reporting techniques.
BW310 teaches the student how a data warehouse is put together and populated. Students learn to create various objects for the extraction and storage of data from both R/3 source systems and from flat files.
After those courses, the rest of the curriculum is specific to the role one has on the project. You can get a picture of the whole curriculum path at:
    http://www50.sap.com/useducation/curriculum/mySAP.asp?tid=4
Please find out what version of BW you are using and if there are plans to upgrade:

You can obtain information about becoming a certified consultant by going to:
    www.sap.com/useducation
This will bring up the SAP Education Page and at the right side of the page double-click on “SAP Certifications” link and you’ll see information about the various types of certification offered, suggested course paths, exam schedules, etc.
SAP Consultant Certification is generally geared towards SAP Customers, Partners, Consultants and project team members involved in current implementation or planning for future implementation of SAP. The Solution Academy courses help prepares you for the certification exam. The Solution Academy is more like a fast track program which is a combination of level 2 and level 3 standard module courses offered in an average of 24 days of training and the certification exam is offered on the last day of the last class in the track.
To look at exams:  click on the “Exam Listings” link on the highlights box. This will give you the list of certification exams available. Clicking on the particular exam you are interested takes you to that exam’s page and click on “exam information” for the topic by topic information that is going to be covered in that exam.
For courses that help you prepare for certification, take a look at the Solution Academy Courses. Here is the link to the various Solution Academies you can choose from:
    http://www50.sap.com/useducation/curriculum/group.asp?tid=8
Once you click on a particular Academy, that link will give you the curriculum path or courses within that academy and there is a certification exam on the last day of the last class within that program.
To be certified, you actually have 3 options. First you can take the Solution Academy path choosing the solution or area of specialty you want to be certified in. This option is a fast track usually around 24 days of class with 1 day of certification exam.
The second option is for you to take the regular curriculum path for the specific solution you want to certify in. However, this includes more than 25 days of training and you will also have to pay for the certification exam separately at $500 each. Here is the link to the curriculum paths:
    http://www.sap.com/usa/services/education. Click on Application Courses.
The last option is not to take any classes at all but do self study or if you already have extensive background and training in the particular SAP solution you want to certify in. you can register for the exam. (We do not have self study materials to prepare you for the exam).
The Solution Academy for the BW/BI is:
    http://www50.sap.com/useducation/curriculum/curriculum.asp?rid=285&TID=

  • Should I learn flash?

I'm in the first year of my degree and don't really have to spend much time studying because I've done most of it before. We learn the basics of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flash, Photoshop etc but it's not specific enough to get a decent job with.
I want to focus my attention (and money) on learning one main thing and mastering it but aren't sure which to go for. I like using flash and love all of it's capabilites but also realise how important it could be to maybe master photoshop and look at digital art type stuff.
Or maybe learn CSS or something like that.
I want to maybe go in to website design, but am also interested in many other things. I mean, even if I do go in to web design, should I learn flash or should I focus my attention on photoshop and HTML?
I'm not really an arty type, I don't want to just be a programmer I want to at least do some design.
I want to look at how easy things are to learn, how fun it would be, if it would be useful in a few years and also the demand for it.
    Thoughts?
    Cheers!!

It really depends on what you want to do mainly when you start your career.
Personally, I wanted to learn everything to be as valuable as possible in not only a corporate setting, but also personal projects.
I attended Art Institute for Web Development and took classes on all the most popular platforms and applications. The list includes...
    XHTML/CSS
    Photoshop
    Flash
    Dreamweaver
    AS 3.0
    PHP/MySQL
On top of that, we learned about things like Color Theory, Design Theory and other Web Dev concepts.
In the grand scheme of things though, what I learned in school is only a fraction of what I've learned once I graduated and started working. I continue to learn things everyday, it is pretty much endless.
So getting to your question about Flash...
I think it is a valuable skill set to have. I wouldn't stop at Flash though. You still need basic knowledge, if not, advanced knowledge of XHTML/CSS and PHP/MySQL because your Flash projects will most likely require those technologies to implement in real world applications.
It's a crazy journey to say the least and every day, things get crazier with technology evolving so quickly.
The topics I outlined above are things you want to have a strong foundation in.
From there you can really focus on what type of work you want to do. I pretty much do a little bit of everything but like you are wondering, it does limit how far you can master one particular thing. But with time, I believe you can master most if not all of the topics.
    Hope that helps.
    Dey

Issue 2 :- Actually it could be valid for Issue 1 also. It
seems like SWF file you are trying to import, does some action
like, importing another swf or connecting to server on the first
frame itself. Captivate will try to play the first frame of SWF
when you import them. Try creating a keyframe with the stop action
as the first frame in your SWF, and see if you still have the
    issue.
Issue 3 :- The approach I am mentioning over here is
generally the last approach which I will take in such scenerios,
but since you have already experimented a little, so try this.
    Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application
    Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
    Rename captivate_v20.dat as captivate_v20_org.dat.
    Restart Captivate Application.
    thanks

  • How to Best Optimize Flash site for performance (not SEO)

I am a newbie to Flash design. I have build this site for my client www.888acolyte.com
I watched a bunch of YouTube Videos on how to stracture a site and then pulled together a lot of features from different learning resources.
I loved Flash for its animation capabilities and used a lot of time line tweening in my site layout. My background has a moving blurry colorful spots animation, my pages come out and assemble themselves as animations, transitions and rollover done as animations.
All of it done via Flash's time line tweening.
As the end result site is stattering in performance rather significantly. I am not sure if it is because of the animations I have employed or because of something else?
I used JPG instead of PNGs as they take a lesser size. I used an 80 quality in them out of Photoshop.
Every JPG is scaled to 75% of its actual size as I expect the site to be bigger on some bigger screens. I set it up to "Allow Full screen"
    Flash Tab Settings:
    In the export options :
    JPG Quality = 80
    No Sound
    SWF Settings:
    Checked "Compress Movie"
    Checked "Include Hidden Layers"
    Checked "Include XMP Metada"
    UnChecked "Export SWC"
    HTML Tab Settings:
    Dimensions: 100%
    Quality: High
I looked up some resources for "how to optimise a flash site"  and seems that the best one around would be from 2009: http://www.netmagazine.com/tutorials/optimise-flash-movies
There is also this "magic button" "Save and Compact", which did not seem to have much effect on the final size of an .swf file.
I hope to receive a feedback on how to properly stracture and optimize a Flash site for the best performance.
If to go into details is too complicated perhaps someone can point me to a good learning resource on the topic?

If you're just needing a flash player, have you tried the JWPlayer from Longtail Video? That's what I'm using to view flash video on my site.

    My Friend
I think you need to check out some of the books, online
tutorials, course etc pertaining to Flash. Build up your knowledge
a little at a time and you will surprise yourself at what you can
achieve, you would also probaby build your own web apps and not
    rely on templates.

Moderator's Note: Subject line changed as it is not seem to be a relevant and support issue.

It depends in what format the online videos are.
For some formats you might find appropriate players on Nokia Store

  • How Do I Stop Flash Player From Storing Cache?

    Windows XP SP3
Latest Flash Player (i just upgraded it to the latest as of today)
There are a couple of directories on my HDD that appear to be the place where Flash stores cache.
    One of them is (#1):
    c:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Adobe\Flash Player\AssetCache\
    The other is (#2):
    c:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#sharedobjects
These directories were so bloated with subdirectories that it literally took about 12 HOURS OR MORE to delete everything in them!  I'm not kidding.
There must have been 100,000 subfolders or maybe even more in these folders.  They were choking everything on my computer that had to read past them.
I FINALLY was able to delete everything from them after hours of work.
Now I want to keep them empty, so this doesn't happen again but I can't find out how to do that.  It is so dang frustrating.  I looked and looked for a way to shut this storage off.
I finally found the online "Settings Manager" and thought I FINALLY solved the problem after setting the "Global Storage" setting to "Never" and unchecking the "Allow third party Flash content to be stored on your computer" and "Store common Flash components to reduce download times" boxes.
    BUT NO!!!
It didn't do a thing.  I looked at those two folders again and they are still being filled up with new subfolders!!!!
    UUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
How do I keep Flash Player from storing this unwanted mess on my computer?!
    Thank you for ANY HELP!

    PS:
Before I set the global settings as I stated above, I DELETED all the "Websites already visited" from the list in Settings Manager so that ALL Websites would be set according to the global settings.
But none of that did a thing to stop the new folders from being created anyway.  How do I stop them??!!!
