How to ask a question @ AskTom
Hi,
very sorry I am a newbie and couldn't find the right forum to post this. I have a question regarding
a PL/SQL procedure that was posted on AskTom. I need to ask a question but when I go to
[Your Questions] http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:60:3249934836147492785::NO
all I see is a text field that says email (or is it my browser --- firefox) How do I ask a question?

The "Your Questions" tab is to get a list of all the questions you have asked (by your email address).
Because so much of Tom's time is taken up just dealing with followups to previous questions, he only opens the site up for new questions periodically. When this happens, a "Ask a Question" button will appear on the main page.

Then I discovered that it is impossible to retract /delete an asked question.
Not helpful, I can only edit the question, so I have edited the question.
If you know the link where I can tell people to read when they want to know what details need to be included, then I would be most grateful.

I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to ask a question after I logged in - I have no idea how I ever got to this screen - so would someone please tell me the 1,2,3 as to how I did it? It was purely by accident. I have a question I need to ask and need to put it in the right topic. After I logged in, there was nothing on the right side of the screen that allowed me to ask a qustion. I could look a previous questions, but nothing comes up that allows me to ask a new question. Thanks. This has been very frustrating.

There you will see a list of Forum topics. Click on

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

Photos gone. I don't even know how to ask my question.
My photos are not visible when I opened iPhoto. All the albums I created and the titles I gave the photos are gone. The Last Import has 2 photos I scanned 18 months ago. I have an iMac 10.5.8 and iPhoto and iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2. I know I'm probably not asking the question correctly because I do not even understand how iPhoto really workds or what it is. I just want to know where my photos and all the sorting I did is.
The point is with iPhoto it's so search to tag, group and find specific photos. Terence Devlin posted the most succinct description of how to use iPhoto to manage photos. The following if from this topic: Better way to organize my images?: Apple Support Communities
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organization is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
If you're rather manage files in folders then iPhoto is not for you. -
I don't know how to ask this question... Can you help?
I'll state right from the get-go, this is NOT a Premiere problem. This is a Windows problem, but I don't know exactly what it is.
Why I'm I posting it here? It's in Premiere that I notice it the most.
I can be watching my playback in Premiere fine and then all the sudden, my playback will stop. At first I thought it was a bug in Premiere, but then I notcied it happening in AE and other non-Adobe programs.
The computer is acting like I clicked away from Premiere, like on the desktop. Playback stops and then I have to click my Premeire window again to make it active and then play again.
This happens every 5 minutes or so (haven't timed it).
When it clicks itself out, it doesn't really go anywhere that I can tell, but something is definitely making my active window/program become inactive.
I'm not sure how to even phrase this question since I don't know what is really going on. But it's driving me crazy in Premiere as I'm in it about 15 hours a day. So it's happening, as you can imagine, 5-10 times an hour during my playack.
In fact, just at this very moment it did it again while writing here. My Chrome page became inactive and I had to reclick right here to continue writing.
Any suggestions on where to even start?
I've had probably 50 computers since Windows 98 and I've never seen this before.If it happens at regularly timed intervals of user input inactivity,
I would suspect a power option trying to spin down a drive
or blank the display.
I would start 'GodMode' and check all of the power options.

How do i change the tempo of a song without adjusting the actual tempo?
heres why:
im composing songs in a tempo that sounds great by ear, but i need to decrease each value of each note in half so it can be in a 1/2 time tempo for my musicians to read easier.
if the song sounds great at 100bpm, i want to compose it at 50bpm, so theres not that many rests, and other values harder to read.
the only reason i need to do this is to make it easy to read for my readers, and remember , i can't read notation, just "midi blocks".
sorry about the vague explanation, i just dont have the theory.Musical scores (which I assume you mean) don't work like that.
There is no 'tempo' value like BPM.
You just play the notes faster or slower - the time notation in musical scores has nothing to do with the 'speed' of the piece. It just tells the musician the 'type' of rhythm or pulse of each bar/section.
This really isn't the place to go into Musical Score theory, but what you are asking doesn;t make any sense because you are comparing apples with pencils.
What I think you are asking is that once you have composed your BPM arrangement then you convert this to a musical notation and that is where your problem is?
If so, and again I am no expert, then simply reduce the BPm of the arrangement and then use the notation from that. Perhaps someone else understand what he is trying to do. After all if you are reading notation, that is all you are doing, reading notation. It's like a book with words, you can read them as slow or as fast as you like. There are no rules except the grammar and that is what the 'time signature' and notation is, just grammar.
Does that make sense or have i really missed the boat here? -

Hi,
Could you please some give isteps to posting questions for ask.tom .I tried in his site ,but i didn't find the post thread/question kind of options.And besides waiting in vain for days, staring at the "Sorry I have a large backlog right now, please ask a question later"-message and getting more and more depressed (just kidding ;) ), you could always ask your question here on this forum.
If you do that:
Provide details about DB-version, make a small but representative example, use the tags.
(that way you have practised on how to ask questions to Tom when you get your chance ;))
And usually by doing some searches on here and AskTom there's great chance you'll find your answer(s) without having to ask anyone. -
you search items on ebay,ask a question of the seller and send it, i then want to return to my listing and the searched items, but firefox will only let me do this if i resend my question every time, it means all the messages i send asking a question are duplicated, how can i turn this annoying protocol off?

When I go to download from my iTunes account, it has started to say that I have to verify my ID. When only last week I was able to download ok. The questions it asks me are not relevant to me and I need to know how to reset the questions. For example, it asks who is my favourite teacher? I am over 50 years old and have not been in a classroom for almost 40 years, so I would not have ever answered a question like that in the first place as I would not know a name of a teacher. Any clues anyone?

This week I downloaded the BIOS update from Mozilla and since then my header bar has not been the same. For instance, in order to get to this box, to ask my question, I entered Mozilla.com, then entered "Help" which resulted in a new tab, then "Ask a Question" which was another tab, then still another tab. By the time I got to this page I have 5 tabs open. In the past, a new page was opened and I could always return to the original via the "arrow" in the address bar. More than likely this can be solved with one key stroke, I just don't know what key to stroke.

Firefox will launch a link in a new tab if the Ctrl key is pressed down during clicking, and will launch a link in a new window if the Shift key is pressed down during clicking. Maybe Firefox is having trouble reading your keyboard accurately. Sometimes pressing Ctrl or Shift several times will help clear that up. In other cases, it could be a compatibility problem with your keyboard, low batteries, or another problem on the keyboard side. And/or, if you haven't shut down and restarted Windows since this problem began, that sometimes helps.
Some add-ons also can change how links behave. Do you have any extensions related to tabs, like Tab Mix Plus? You can review your extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. For some, you will find an Options button to inspect their settings. -
How to effectively ask a question on this forum
Ok, so this'll take a little explaining. I was kinda bored over my lunch break, so i decided I'd write a general reference for how to post well on this forum. I realize that many people aren't gonna read this the first time they post, but i thought it would be a good thing to reference when replying to people who post a poor question.
_10 Ways to Post a Good Question on this Forum_
_1) Write a descriptive subject line_
This is the first thing that people see, and it influences how they read a question. Subjects like "Java error" tell people nothing about your problem. Subjects like "How to implement a SAX parser for use in multiple classes" are infinitely more useful.
_2) Don't use phrases such as URGENT or HELP ME!!! or IT'S DUE IN AN HOUR!!!!_
The people on this forum don't have the same priorities as you, and therefore don't care if your problem is urgent. In fact, they find it rude to assert that your problem should be solved before somebody else's just because you procrastinated. They also don't pleas for help too fondly. Typically posters who write this sort of phrase in their post has given up and become helpless, making it very difficult to guide them to the answer. Also, keep the caps lock off. THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANNOYING THAN ALL-CAPS POSTS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE YELLING, and people will make you aware of how it annoys them.
_3) Dont post your homework assignments asking for "teh codez"_
You will get flamed like none other for this sort of question. You may get codes, but when you submit them to your instructor, you may get suspended or expelled (depending on your school's cheating policy). The people on this forum are more advanced than you in Java, and can make it painfully obvious to your instructor that you cheated.
_4) Write in normal English_
Think of this forum as your supervisor or instructor, you want to sound professional and convey your question effectively. SMS speak or any other sort of abbreviation of the English language becomes difficult to read, and many people on this forum won't even try. This forum is filled with professionals in the Java world, and they are accustomed to reading true English (full sentences).
_5) Don't be helpless_
This forum is here mainly to help with specific problems, not to teach you Java. If you don't know where to start, a person is most likely going to tell you to write the solution out on paper first, breaking it down into small steps that can be accomplished by the computer.
_6) Do your research_
Many of the questions posted can be solved with a quick Google search. You should check a few places before you even post a question. They include: this forum (do a forum search), Google (do a Google search), the API's (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/), and the Java Tutorials(http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/)
_7) Post code and errors with your question_
The answer to your problem is in the error messages and the code. Instead of asking a general question about for loops, post the code that you have written and the error info that you get. When asking a question it is IMPERATIVE that you have tried to do it your own way, because the people on the forum mostly won't do it for you, they'll only point out where you have done it wrong and try to help you fix it. Don't paraphrase your error messages, because there are subtleties in the actual messages that you may unknowingly edit out.
_8) Don't Multi-post_
It is rude to post the same question multiple times or in multiple places in the this forum. This is for the same reason as #2, it makes it seem that you think your problem is more urgent or important than others' problems.
_9) Don't resurrect dead threads_
If a thread is 3 years old, nobody is going to remember it, so make a new thread to ask your question. If you have a question about something in the old thread, reference it through a hyperlink.
_10) Take it easy_
As long as the people in the forum see that you're legitimately trying to help yourself, they'll help you as much as they see fit. The biggest problem that newbies have is they rely on the forum to spoonfeed them the info, and it's not going to happen. They'll either get flamed or ignored. The people on the forum aren't trying to find "fresh meat to flame", they legitimately want to help you, and they'll typically give you fair warning if you're doing something annoying or unorthodox.There does seem to be a way to sticky posts, but I think only mods and admins have the power to do it. Lately the number of doc questions in the Database General forum and the SQL and PL/SQL forum seems to increase exponentially.
Also almost all posters never look up error messages in the on-line documentation, nor do they anything to resolve their own problem.
Need I to mention ORA-12154? Probably not.
While the Forums Etiquette post is clear you should be looking up, no one is actually doing that.
Also apparently no one reads the Forum Etiquette post.
The result of this is the Search Forum button has become fully useless and almost always turns up 1000s of non-relevant posts.
Which results in .... people asking that question again
I am quite aware the situation on http://asktom.oracle.com and many other sites is hardly better.
I am also aware Jives might be incapable of addressing this properly.
But can't something be done?
Eg: Jives automatically consults the on-line documentation or automatically consults Google or even Wikipedia?
I try to avoid answering doc questions as much as possible, but that doesn't work.
If I could, I would kick the poster, as this kind of laziness really annoys me.
When I started my career the Internet didn't exist. The only things available were manuals and the phone to call support, and it wasn't outsourced to Asia.
