How to ask size/free space on a local disk?

hi,
does anyone know how can you find out the size and amount of space used on a local disk?
thanks,
andrew

Not really an "over site", remember the Java motto - Write once, run anywhere. If they included Op Sys specific methods would that not defeat the purpose. Sun was kind enough to give us the runtime class, which is handy to inter act with the Opo Sys... - Bart

  • How to free space in start up disk in Snow leopard... please give step by step process

how to free space in start up disk in Snow leopard... please give step by step process someone help me ......

What's taking up all your space?  To find out, click finder in your dock, the select your home user.  This will display your user folders.  Start by selecting your music folder by clicking it once, then the space bar on your key board.  This will open a window display this files size.    Take note of the size of the following folders:
         1. Music
         2. Movies
         3. Pictures
         4. Downloads
This will help you determine where you space is going.
Once you have determined that.... deside what you want to delete or move in order to save space.  Moving Library's to external drives is often the best way to free up space.
For iPhoto Libraries, see - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1229
For iTunes Libaries, see - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
For iMove Events, see - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
NOTE - With iMovie events, ensure you "move" the events, not just copy them as shown in the second article
Also go through your applications folder, and delete any unwanted applications.
Ensure your downloads folder is empty or unwanted downloads deleated
Ensure your iPhoto Trash is empty http://www.ehow.com/how_4501773_empty-trash-iphoto.html
Finally ensure your Trash is empty by clicking "finder" in the top menu directly beside the apple, and selecting "empty trash"
    Hope that helps

  • How do you free space on the startup disk

how do you free space on the startup disk

If your disk is 80% full that is normal.  Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots.  To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup.
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files.  You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again.  More headroom is better.  If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
    - Empty the trash.
    - Start iPhoto, empty its trash and restart the computer.
    Deleting files:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second one onto which you will offload some files.
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
    Moving files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.
As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • How do I get more space on my startup disk

How do I get more space on my startup disk?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How many GB of free space needed to install Leopard?

Before I install Leopard to upgrade my computer (I currently have Panther), how much free space is recommended? I have about 6 GB, I know not much... You should definitely get a LOT more free space. 6GB is very little even if you run panther. you need at least 15-20% of hard drive space free to avoid problems resulting from disk fragmentation. leopard needs about 11GB but as I said you need way more than that for normal computer operation. you should free up space and maybe get a bigger drive. I would also recommend defragging your drive before attempting leopard installation given how little free space you've got now. one way to do that is to clone your system to another drive, boot from that drive and clone it back to the internal drive.

  • How can I 'fill free space with songs' AND keep some memory free?

I like the 'automatically fill free space with songs' option, but it leaves me with no room (or very little room) for taking photos and video.  How can I keep some memory free?
    Matthew

You'll probably need to backup or clone the remaining OS X partition, definitely clone the bootcamp partition then erase and reformat the drive. You'll need a 3rd party app.

  • How to find remaining free space in your schema

    Hi
I am new to Oracle hence this question..
What is the command that would help me know how much percent of space allocated to my schema has been used and also how to find remaining amount of space in bits or bytes or whatever from SQL or any where... I am not a database admin (fyi)
Appreciate ur help in this reg
    Thanx
    Kris

Kris, free space is not assigned to a schema in Oracle per say, but it you mean "how can I see how much of their quota a user has used?" then the following should help.
You can find quotas in dba_ts_quotas (also user version)
You can find how much space has been used in dba_extents (also user_extents)
You should be able to write a query that compared the sum of the used space for a tablespace to the quota for the tablespace. Try the following query (notice how DBA's are treated)
    select q.username, q.tablespace_name,
q.bytes as Quota, e.spcused as Used,
    round(q.bytes/e.spcused * 100,2) as Percentage
    from dba_ts_quotas q,
(select tablespace_name, owner, sum(bytes) as spcused
    from dba_extents
    group by tablespace_name, owner
    ) e
    where q.tablespace_name = e.tablespace_name
    and q.username = e.owner
If you are actually interested in how much free space is left in a tablespace you can look at dba_free_space (user_free_space), but the value returned is not adjusted for the quota limitation. You need the query above for that.

  • HT3680 How to get my free space back after quitting the disk utility's erase free space

    Hi,
I started the DU's erase free space--fastest way method.  When it almost completed, I had a pop up that said that I need to free up disk space.
So then i was flustered enought to just quit the program because I didnt want to free up disk space and I was frustrated.
Not knowing it would still keep whatever it was that took the remaning disk space on my Mac.
How to I get this removed so I am back to before?

Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.
    Thanks!

  • How do I merge "free space" back into my OS X partition

Here is what I am currently looking at:
There is about 20 gb of free space that I was going to use for an Ubuntu install but have since changed my mind. To be safe I downloaded the Recovery Disk Assistant and installed it onto a flash drive. When I boot from that and enter disk utility I can drag my OS X partition into the free space and it appears to fill the drive. When I hit apply, it does it's thing and completes the partition but then instantly reverts to what it started out as with the free space still there. I tried a restart but found my drive to be in the same state. I have several back ups so I am not really worried about it, but I assumed this would work. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to just restore from the backup? Can I do that without affecting the bootcamp partition? I am on a Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.4.

You will need to add a new partition in that empty space. Be sure you format it Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that works, then remove the partition and try extending the OS X partition. Note that this will render your Boot Camp partition non-bootable.
Another possibility is that you should not extend the OS X volume all the way to the top of the Boot Camp partition. Leave about 2 GBs free. See if that works by providing enough space for the Recovery HD to be relocated.
Did you ever attempt to install Linux or to format that partition for Linux?

  • Wiping free space on Lion using Disk Utility Erase Free Space

    I'm using Lion (OS X 10.7.3) on a late 2011 MacBook Pro.
    FileVault is active.
I tried to erase free space on my HD using Disk Utility. It started by creating a temporary file and presented me with an indeterminate indicator-bar (one that looks like a barber pole). Activity Monitor showed an average CPU utilization of 2% by Disk Utility but disk activity was normal and usage stayed constant.
I left this process on for about twelve hours but Activity Monitor showed nothing new and the DU indicator-bar stayed indeterminate with Creating Temporary File.
I tried to skip this DU process and was presented with another indeterminate bar: Skipping. Again, AM showed nothing new so I force-quit DU and used sudo find / -type f -size +500M to see if any temporary files were created. I did not find any new files.
I rebooted and tried it from the terminal: sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD. The result was the same: No progress.
BTW, if you run the above command, make sure you include the freespace portion. If you don't, diskutil will happily start securely erasing the entire disk.
Not being able to wipe free space using DU may have something to do with FileVault being active. Can someone confirm this?
What I love about working on a Mac is I have a Unix-based computer that I can tinker with. So I was able to wipe free space manually: dd if=/dev/urandom of=~/DELETEME followed by srm -s ~/DELETEME.
    Hope this helps someone.

Why we don't mention such terminal commands around here.
