How to automatically launch work contexts ...?

Hi there,
How to automatically launch work contexts ...?
By the term context, I mean:
- when I'm working on website design, I always need to have Coda application on the right, a browser on the left.
- when I'm developing with XCode, I need XCode on the right and iPad simulator on the upper left and at the bottom left, I have the documentation
etc
I'd like to be able to by one click to launch all of that correctly placed on the screen etc etc
Anyone?
Julien

I'm a developer but on mac since september and didn't go into applescript

  • How do automatic backups work?

The new version of pages likes to save what I'm working on. This process usually interrupts me for a minute or so perhaps because I keep most of my stuff on my iDisk. I also find identical copies of my documents named 'Backup of (document name).pages.'
I'm sure all of this is intended to be helpful. For me it's confusing and annoying. How do I make it stop?

The files named Backup of (document name).pages aren't new objects.
You got them because the preference pointed by the yellow arrow is checked on your machine.
About the Autosave feature which is a Lion one implemented in iWork apps, my point of view is that a safety feature which may be disabled is no longer a safety one.
So, I hope that Apple will not give a way to disable it.
If you don't want it to apply (which is playing with matches),
    open your document
    File > Duplicate
    Close the original document.
This way, you will work on a document which was never saved so Autosave will not apply.
But don't come here crying because you lost your work if you do that.

Very recently, my computer stopped opening quicktime when I click on a video clip in iphoto. I have quicktime X, and it still works to play videos if I open quicktime and then search for the video. How do I go back to quicktime automatically launching from iphoto?

Well since I do not have iPhoto 7 I can only guess what may be: As far I can remember up to iPhoto 8, iPhoto insisted on Quick Time Player 7. As I can see you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and there Quick Time X is the standard playaer. Basically Quick Time 7 is not part of Snow Leopard.
Can you please check if Quick Time 7 is installed under Applications->Utilitis (in 10.6 Quick Time 7 if presenet is installed not under Applications - there Quick Time X is - but under Application/Utilities).
If not: insert your Snow Leopard installation DVD.
Once the installer opens, double-click on the Optional Installs folder
    Double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package
    Click continue.
Select the option for QuickTime 7 then click Continue to start the installation.
If it is there you may try to move the iPhoto prefernce file to another folder and let iPhoto create a new one.
Please keep the old file until you are sure that iPhoto works how it should.
The iPhoto preference file can be found under your home folder then Library then Preferences and there
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
As alraedy mentioned do not delet this file, since if something goes wrong you can put it back.

  • How to stop iPhoto from automatically launching?

I'm not sure if this is specific to any version of iPhoto or not.
But anyway, when I insert a compact flash card into a USB card reader attached to an iMac, iPhoto automatically launches. How do I turn this functionality off?
    Thanks

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • How to disable automatic launch of WIE in startup configuration with no options to do so?

    Thinkpad T400 2764CTO running Windows 7 Home Premium 64
PC only 2 weeks old, very little on it, but getting slower and slower. Finally found the configuration for the startup menu and disabled several things I knew I didn't want at startup. One problem that I can't seem to figure out, is how to disable Windows Internet Explorer from being launched at startup? I have tried disabling every Microsoft option, and it still launches. Is there a specific Lenovo option [that does not obviously have anything to to with WIE] in the startup menu that, if disabled, will stop the WIE browser from being launched? How do I know which options are not safe to disable when attempting to slim down startup configuration for faster/more reliable performance?
    Thanks,
    Ann

Either I *completely* misread your instructions; that fix is major overkill for what I was trying to do; that fix does not apply to my problem; that fix is only for XP or Vista and not W7; or my PC is already so messed up (despite clean hardware diagnostics, no viruses, no malware, and it is only 2 weeks old), that it performed unexpected and unwanted actions when trying to use the Windows features on/off program control panel options.
Opened Control Panel, went to Programs, and finally found the option on the left for turning Windows features on and off. Unchecked the box for IE8, which required a restart. The restart time was 4-5 times longer than usual, even when launching superfluous programs from the startup menu, since it had to "reconfigure Windows." After restarting, WIE did not automatically launch, and its toolbar icon was gone too. Tried to turn it back on like you said, which also required a restart, which didn't make sense to me, since I expected the browser to launch again following another extra long restart once the box was re-selected. Although, surprisingly, it didn't, so for a moment thought it had somehow worked. Then I realized that my WIE icon was still missing from the toolbar, so there was no way to launch it even if I wanted to. Went back into the Control panel and checked every Windows feature box possible; another extra-long restart; still no toolbar icon for WIE. Had to go into the computer files to find WIE so that I could create a desktop shortcut icon so I could manually launch the browser from that. However, when I clicked on the shortcut, it went into a browser setup mode, as if it was being set up for the first time. Finished setup and tried to go to a webpage, but kept getting a connection error.
Diagnosed it, and it said that the Local Area Connection had no valid IP address. Waited on hold with Mediacom for a hour before being disconnected, trying to find out what the IP address was and where to re-enter it, since unchecking the IE8 box in the Windows features part of the Control Panel, doesn't just temporarily disable the function, but apparently actually deletes the toolbar icon, as well as the IP address. Took several more attempts over several hours to get ahold of Mediacom reset the signal to get the IP address back and get back online. So that really does not seem like a viable solution for trying to save time and resources by removing something from the startup menu, if it just quadruples startup time, deletes WIE toolbar icon and IP address permanently, requires creating a desktop shortcut, and then requires several more hours on phone with ISP for signal reset to get the IP address back. Would have been much faster and done less apparent damage than just going ahead and letting it launch at startup and then just closing it. *sigh*
I know that just having an icon in the toolbar does not mean that that particular program will launch at startup, as I have several others that have toolbar icons that I have been able to uncheck in the startup menu, so I can use the toolbar icons to launch each program manually. There just doesn't seem to be any program active in the startup menu that would be launching the browser, and still concerned about unchecking something necessary in startup that could screw it up even more.
Is there any way to get my toolbar WIE icon back without a full system restore, so that I have less shortcut clutter on my desktop?

    Hi,
I do not use iPhoto to import my digital images. How can I disable the automatic launch when I plug my camera or card reader?
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul,
To do this just open Image Capture, open its preferences and then under the general tab you can select the option of "When a camera is connected, open:"
Just select no application and that should do it.

how do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

    It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
    Press return
    Now reboot.
    The reverse would be "yes".

My guess is that you won't be able to do much if you threw away the serial number before using it.  The serial number will not have been externally visible on the box though... doing that would make it available for use by anyone who sees the box in any store.
    To locate the serial number:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html
If you remain unable to locate the serial number you might need to head back to wherever you purchased the product to confirm whether or not you might have thrown out the serial number or if it could even possibly have never been provided.
Beyond that you need to resolve serial number issues with ASdobe Support directly.  Here is a link for chat:

  • How to stop iTunes web preview from automatically launching iTunes?

Any time you go to an iTunes web preview page (which a lot of app sites/reviews link to), it automatically launches iTunes, completely defeating the purpose of having a web preview page in the first place. How can I make it stop doing this? I've looked in both Safari & iTunes prefs; if it's there, I didn't see it.

It's very annoying, and I wish there was a solution too. If I click on a link to for something to iTunes, I now have a new web browser window opened that is showing the exact same thing that opened in iTunes. How pointless is that? Its to the point that I am looking for alternatives to iTunes for managing my media.

    Hi Debibrighthope,
I don't regularly work with Dreamweaver so you might be best served by posting the question in the Dreamweaver forum versus the Creative Cloud. My inclination would be to go into the Dreamweaver preferences into the File association section, select the image format in question, like jpeg or gif, and ensure the path for Fireworks points to the CS6 version versus the CS5.

  • How to remove automatically launched items/apps?

Sorry if this is a duplicate question.
Actually i didn't find best answer for disabling items that automatically lauched when osx starting.
I've been removed all startup items from login startup items (System Preferences - User & Groups - Login Items).
Nothing found on StartupItems folder (Library - Startup Items) too.
But some items still automatically launched on Mac start (such as Splashtop Streamer, Busycall).
How to remove those startup items without completely uninstalling them?
    Any help would by appreciated.

Those are system modifications, and if you want them to do what they do, they have to load at startup. If you don't like what they do, remove them according to the developer's instructions, or refer to the developer for support.
