How To Automatically Open docx and xlsx files in Safari

I am been doing some searching but don't seem to be able to find an answer to what must be a very simple setting I am missing somewhere.
We have an intranet site with links to a number of docx and xlsx files, I need to tell Safari to automatically open those files rather than simply placing them in the download folder. The only information I could find mentioned creating a file called "com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist", I found an example of that file that was supposed to do what I am looking for but as far as I can tell the version of Safari I am running (5.1.9) is ignoring this file (placed in my user's preference folder in the Library).
It is frustrating to not be able to figure this out, typically I have no problem finding very basic settings such as these but this has me lost. In Firefox it is trivial and it must be in Safari too. Can anyone help tell me what I need to do so that Safari will automatically open newer MS Office files?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, but there at least you are talking to people who all use the app, while in this forum (which is for hardware and not software in any case, so already off the mark, since the problem has nothing to do with hardware), it is probably a minority.

I did see someone from serveral years ago with the same problem at

I wonder if there is another list somewhere of permissible extensions in that .plist....

  • HOW TO GET T2 TO OPEN DOCX AND XLSX FILES

MUY T2 WILL NOT OPEN ANY OF THESE FILES, HOW CAN I OVERCOME THIS ?
    Post relates to: Tungsten T2

Please do not use ALL CAPS when asking a question! It's considered SHOUTING, and not necessary.  Thanks!
To read those type of files, you'll have to purchase and upgrade to Docs To Go version 11 - however I don't see the T2 listed in the supported devices.  This may be an error on their end, so check the specifications carefully to be sure it will run!
    http://www.dataviz.com/products/documentstogo/premium/dxtg_techspecs.html?device_id=67
If you're the creator of the files, you can also just save them to an older .doc format and use the version of DTG that came with the device!

  • Cannot open .docx and .xlsx files directly from thunderbird

You alredy answerd this question, but it didn't solve my problem completly. You send me this:
"Is it set up here: Tools > Options > Attachments Under 'Content Type' Microsoft Office Excel 2010 workbook Action: Use microsoft Office excel' Note you can click on the action to see a drop down selection if you need to change it. then click on OK
If it is not there then you need to set it up.
right click on attachment and choose 'open' a window pops up asking what to do. choose 'Open with' and either 'Microsoft Open XML converter' (I have MS Office 2007 so can to use that option) or better still select 'Microsoft Office Excel'
If the option is not available click on 'Other' See if option is now available or click on 'Browse' and in Microsoft Office, locate the Excel.exe file (it might be in a folder called 'Office 12 or another number) and click on 'Open' select: 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' and click on OK"
But it is not working. When I do this, it works just for one file type.
Example: when i do this for .docx, select microsoft office word 2010 to open it, it works fine, but when trying to open .xlsx it opens also in word. It does not offer open with or other choises, just runs word and displays error that it cannot read it.

Excel, file association is ok. Even tried with Incredimail free. everything works ok there, butt I like Thunderbird better so I would like to solve this problem. The weirdest thing is that this problem is on a laptop which I installed from a disk immage. It is one of five exactly the same laptops, and all installed from same immage, and only this one has a problem with it,other 4 are ok.
Let me give you a little more info:
    Laptop is Acer Aspire E1-522
    OS is win 7 pro
    Office 2010 pro
Installation of all suplemental programs and Thunderbird I installed from ninite.com
I've tried everything you listed. Even tried to swich disks between 2 laptops, to rule out any hardware problem of some sort.
As I mentioned before I tried installing Incredimail free just for the test, everything works in it. File association is ok every file is opened with its program when on desktop or other place.
Why is this a problem with those files I dont know. Other files .xls and .doc and .pdf work just fine. If there was an option to manually add file extentions in Tools > Options > Attachments it would solve the problem. I'm all out of options. If you can think of something let me now.
Thanks for all your help and your time.

  • Problems to open DOCX and XLSX

    Hi ,
    We have a BBPCRM 4.0 patch 6 , Abap 620 patch 39 and Basis 620 patch 39 .
When we open documents type DOCX and XLSX from the ITS and internet explorer 7 , the system doesnt open this documents .
We have put the mimetype DOCX in view SDOKMIME_C with the next entry:
    application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document
    Can you help us ?
Have this problem happen to anybody ?

    Hello ,
Sap have told us in an incident that there is not a system EBP that works with the new extension of office 2007 (DOCX,XLSX..) , when we acces via http (http://machine:8080..)
I understand your need to maintain the new extensions for Office 2007
and I regret to inform you that this is not possible for the
current standard. I've already forwarded this issue to the responsible
colleagues in our development department and they will analyse how
this change could be implemented in future releases. So SAP Document
Management will include a larger field for the file extension in
future releases. But unfortunatly I cannot offer you a solution for
    the currently released version.
There is anybody that have an EBP and works with this extensions?

  • Unable to open .xls and .xlsx files from windows explorer or from Microsoft outlook using MS Office 2007

When I double click on an .xls or .xlsx file Excel will open up, but I never see the file open up.
If I right click on the excel file and say open with excel I then get the following error:
"Windows cannot find file c:\test\test.xls.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again...."
Everywhere I looked seems to indicate the file associations was messed up so per a technical document I deleted the .xls and .xlsx association and then ran the Office 2007 repair and rebooted.  Still not working even after office puts the .xls and .xlsx
    file associations in.
Here is what I see the in .xls and .xlsx for the &Open action:
    Application: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e
    UseDDE: Checked
    DDE Message: [open("%1")]
    Any guidance would be appreciated!
    Greg

In the ened I had to go into Excel Options, Advanced, General, and uncheck the "ignore other applicaitons....".  BUT this only worked after doing the Office 2007 repair.

  • Open docx and xlsx on url:s with safari on iPad.

    hi,
I can open these files when they are attached in a e-mail. If I get an e-mail with a url to the same file, Safari can not open it. With old office format, xls and doc it is working, but not with the new format, xlsx and pptx for example. If I install an app who can open these files I can tap the file and choose open with and open it with the installed app. If i get an e-mail with url which is pointing to an pdf there is no problem.
My question is, is there a way to get Safari to open the files office files?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance:-)

  • Opening a Excel xlsx file in numbers 08

    Hello,
How do I open a Microsoft .xlsx file in numbers 08? or do i need to update to numbers 09?

Ask to badunit which wrote that he may open this kind of files.
I was never able to open those which I received.
As my rule is to trash *********'s files when I receive some of them, for me it's definitely not a problem
It appears that the automatic vocabulary filter was enhanced. It refuses the word which I am acustomed to use to name the Excel's editor

  • How can I add links to open xml and csv files stored in another location? Please advice how to place links in my frame maker document?

    Hi,
I would like to know as to how can I add links to open xml and csv files stored in another location? Please advice how to place links in my frame maker document?
    Kindly advice.
    Thanks
    Priya

Special > Hypertext > Command "open document" will do its best to open the target document inside FrameMaker, which may not be much help; Special > Hypertext > Command "message …" will use the application you specify. The user guide for 7.0 says this about absolute links, and I don't think anything has changed since:
For example, to start PaintBrush and open the Ship.pcx file on drive C you would use the command message system pbrush.exe C:/Ship.pcx
I've not often used a relative link, and not recently: the same source says
folder levels are separated by a slash / even in Windows and Mac
[relative links] FrameMaker searches for a relative pathname beginning in the folder that contains the current document
[absolute links] FrameMaker searches for an absolute pathname beginning at the top of the file system. In Windows, the absolute pathname begins with the drive specifier, a colon and a slash.
