How to avoid renders when cutting and pasting sequences to a new timeline?

I am working on a 45 minute documentary in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.
The footage is 1080 24p and is being editing in a ProRes standard timeline (not the HQ version). I work on the documentary in chapters (separate sequences)...and then for rough cut outputs...cut and paste the chapters into a separate sequence timeline (also ProRes at the same frame rate).
However, sometimes simple text titles, which didn't need rendering in the shorter chapter timeline, show up as redlines that need rendering in the longer timeline. Which I don't quite understand unless the process of copying and pasting severs the render links...but why should it do that?
My timeline is toggled to SAFE RT in both chapter timelines and the overall project.
Can anyone offer some advice on how I can get those chapters into a longer timeline without the redline bar showing up?
Many thanks,
John

Hi John,
Which I don't quite understand unless the process of copying and pasting severs the render links...but why should it do that?
Well as you noted, the titles don't actually need rendering in your shorter sequence, hence there are no associated render files ie no link is being lost as there is nothing being linked to. Do you follow me? The issue is instead related to how many of these "realtime without rendering" titles that your system can track and handle, and that in turn is related to the amount of RAM in your system and how you have assigned that RAM allocation in FCP's *System Settings...* window > *Memory and Cache* tab. In the short sequence you have fewer titles and so FCP is managing them all in realtime, but in the longer master sequence it would seem apparent that the total number of titles exceeds that which your system can handle with all being in realtime, so the latter ones will require rendering.
My timeline is toggled to SAFE RT in both chapter timelines and the overall project ... Can anyone offer some advice on how I can get those chapters into a longer timeline without the redline bar showing up?
First, I'd ask if there is any specific reason you have set your sequences to Safe RT as opposed to the far more flexible Unlimited RT option?
Second, as alluded to above, you should investigate your current Memory and Cache settings. If its at the 10% default, then try increasing your Still Cache a little (use trial and error, maybe 15% or 20% is enough) ... you should see that your system can handle more of text generator items without needing to render when you allocate more RAM to the task, but note that as you allocate more to RAM to your Still Cache then you are effectively decreasing the RAM available to the rest of FCP, eventually you will hit a tipping point so don't push the value too high.
Hope it helps
Andy

  • Mac running slow when cut and paste

    Hi,
recently I noticed that my mac is running slow when I cut and paste (there is a delay of approx 1-2 secs). I thought it might be some kind of spyware which is trying to steal sensitive information such as passwords, credit cards and others. That would be surprising as I thought those were still rare in Mac. Any thought on this? Suggestions on how to protect my mac from these security issues? Thanks in advance!

    Morning smartasso,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.

  • Text resizes when cutting and pasting

Help? When I cut and paste text from one scene or area to
another, the text changes sizes and does not look uniform to the
next. How do I eliminate that or at least figure out how to make
the text the same size (re: the original text may be 32, but the
pasted text - at 32 - is much larger.)?

The only time you should see a size difference is when you
take text out of a movie clip that has been scaled. Hit Crtl-t to
get the Transform window and see if the object is %100

  • Premiere still very unstable when cutting and pasting transitions

every beta release of Premiere becomes really unstable whenever I cut and paste transitions. Stock or 3rd party transitions, doesnt matter.... 4.0 - 4.1 beta, doesnt matter either...

Yes, it's sweet when something works perfectly out of the box. It's usually nice when a couple of updages cure all ills. Unfortunately, there seems to yet be a "perfect world." Agree with Jim that until it's discovered, other methods must be employeed. A Feature Request/Bug Report would be the best way to deal with this for now.
    Good luck,

  • Cut and pasting clips to a new movie causes 15x file size increase!!

I'm using 6.04 iMovie. I'm converting 8mm analog video via Canopus 300 into imovie. These movies were of an action sport and very few clips are over ten minutes when imported.
I have 4 files(sourced from 4 tapes) from 22-28GB in imovie. I have edited these files, removing bad video, unwanted scenes and have added transitions and titles. The resulting files are each from 22-28Gb's in size.
I then went to make a highlight video by copying and pasting clips from two of the movies. The resulting highlight movie exceeds 160Gb's I have two more movies to past clips from!
I am aware of the "non-destructive" editing feature of Imovie. In the process of editing the individual movies and putting together the highlight movie I emptied trash frequently.
    My questions:
1.) What is the best procedure to cut and paste clips from movies to make a highlight movie?
2.) What can i do with my highlight video to get the size back down to around 15 Gb's? (I've only used about 25% of each of the two first tapes in the highlight video)
    Thanks

    Hello, Scott,
iMovie moves clips to the trash that you have deleted.....if you are not using any part of that clip. If you are using any part of it, the parts you crop out, 'delete,' will be removed from your movie, but not put into trash and not removed from iMovie's project file. If you use 10 seconds of a 30 second clip, for example, but later decide that you really need to have more than the 10 seconds, say you need 15 seconds, all you have to do is go click on that 10 second clip in your movie and then go to 'Advanced' and select 'Revert clip to original' and iMovie will put back the entire clip for you to re-crop.
It is not exactly the same for still photos. If you are using still photos with the Ken Burns effect, emptying the trash will remove the photo's 'clip' and you will not be able to redo the KB effect if you decide to change it. Leaving the trash alone will permit iMovie to retrieve the photo so that you can make those edits. Some of us never empty the trash in iMovie.
When you export as Full quality Quick Time, you are getting just that.....Full Quality, no changes from the original. Your movie is not being compressed, it is shortened because you are saving only the clips that are actually used in the movie, not all the rest. Nothing is lost in quality and you can edit as usual, except for the ability to retrieve any clips that are not in the movie. You will not be able to use the 'Revert clip to original,' now because you have a new set of 'originals.'
So, when you export to quicktime, be sure that you are completely finished with the cropping of your clips and that you will not need to add anything that you previously deleted. I export to quicktime and then open a new iMovie and import the new qt movie into that. Once you see that it plays properly, you can delete the first iMovie and just work with this one. However, it will come in as one large clip, with audio and video incorporated into one track. You will not be able to re-edit titles and effects. (Well, you CAN do it a bit, but it is tricky and you will lose some footage).
I actually make a quicktime version of almost all of my iMovies. I find that this process eliminates any jerkiness or stuttering of my longer movies. I edit the original iMovie by cropping clips, adding photos, putting in titles and transitions. I then add audio last, usually first some short audio clips to go with some of the photos, and then I add background music last. I usually export to quicktime during the adding music part, whenever iMovie starts playing back in a stuttering way. The new quicktime movie is smooth and I can finish my music additions easily.
Apparently, the latest version of quicktime is much better for the jerkiness problem, but I have been hesitant to upgrade since I am in the midst of doing about 4 iMovies.
    Good luck with your project!

  • Result Code = -43 when cutting and pasting

If anyone can help with this, I would be completely thankful.
I cut a clip to paste it into a new project, so I could edit it by itself. Because of the way Garageband is designed, I had to close (and save) the first project before I could open a new one. When I went to paste the clip, I got a pop up box with the follow:
    "An error occurred.
    Result code = -43
    File = Male Voice#07.aif"
I tried opening Audacity and pasting it in there, but there's not an option in any other program but Garageband. If I hit "OK" through the error, it pastes a completely blank clip of the same length, but silent.
Is there any way to recover this clip, or has my Mac completely ruined my project on what should be a simple operation? I don't have time to rerecord this.
    Thanks!

Oh my, I'm afraid you messed it up. Error code -43 means "file not found". Here's what I think happened:
    • You cut the region out of your original project. The Mac's clipboard now holds a GB region pointing to the audio file - not the audio file itself!
    • You close the original project, probably it prompts you whether you want to save it. If you click "yes", the project is saved, and since it doesn't contain the region you cut out, at this stage the audio file is deleted because it's not being used in the project (that's the way GB handles audio - otherwise the project size would grow indefinitely with all the unused audio takes).
    • Now you create a new project and paste in the region from the clipboard. But as I said, this region only has a reference to the audio file, it doesn't contain the audio itself - it can't find the deleted file, that's why you get the error message.
If this is what happened, I'm afraid your audio is gone for good. Here's some tips how to avoid that in the future:
    • If the only purpose is editing one track, why transfer it to a new project at all? You can mute the other tracks and edit away.
    • To avoid deleting the original audio, always use the "copy" command, not "cut"!
    • If you successfully transferred an audio region to a new project, immediately use the "Save as Archive" command - that way the audio will be saved in the new project too. Otherwise it only references the old project which you might delete at some time, and then you'd be in the same position.
Sorry, but I think the only option is to re-record!

  • Error message when cutting and pasting in a document

    Hi,
When I attempt pasting something from one layer to another in an AI document I am receiving the following standard error message:
You are attempting to paste or drag into one or more layers that are locked or hidden. Do you want to unlock and show all appropriate layers?
Here's the problem--I don't have any layers locked or any layers hidden. I've tried adding new layers and pasting into those, but no go. This problem just started a few minutes ago--till then everything was fine. I've tried re starting AI and re starting my Mac. Nothing.
    Anyone have a fix?
    Thanks,

    Yes.
I see now that I can paste into the layer I am copying from, but not into any other layer. If I lock my source layer, I can't paste at all.

  • ITunes folder will not delete. When I moved my iTunes folder from my old computer to new, I placed the iTunes folder temporarily in my Dropbox folder so I could cut and paste it into the new computer's music folder. Now I can't delete that folder.

iTunes will not update my podcasts. When I click refresh, I get the circling arrows but after an hour it hasn't updated the available podcasts on those I'm subscribed to. I don't know if this is related to the issue I'm having with iTunes store and Besecure, guessing it may be. All the workarounds I've seen on these communities for fixing the Bsecure and iTunes issue are far too complicated for me, a computer simpleton. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, provided all the media is inside the iTunes Media folder, which is in turn inside the main iTunes folder (which is the standard arrangement) you should be able to move the iTunes folder from <User's Music> to any other path and shift-start-Tunes (option-start-iTunes on a Mac) to reconnect to it.
If the media folder has split out to another drive in the past, or media is stored outside of the iTunes Media folder, then things get a bit more complicated. I can go into details should it be necessary.

  • How do I turn off "Smart Cut and paste" in InDesign?

    Hi,
A programmer told me, that ID has a function called "smart cut and paste":
smart cut and paste boolean -- If true, automatically adjusts spacing among words and between words and punctuation marks when cutting and pasting text.
    http://www.mugginsoft.com/html/kosmictask/ASDictionaryDocs/Adobe/InDesign/OS-X-10.7/InDesi gn-CS5/html/html/FULL/classes/text_editing_preference.html
Unfortunately, it shows some weird text exchange behaviour when copying and pasting text.
My web and my forum search showed no results.
So: How can it be turned off?
    Thanks for your help!

    Thank you very much!
In the German version of InDesign's GUI it is called "Beim Ausschneiden und Einfügen von Wörtern Abstand automatisch anpassen".

  • Can I resize a Quick Selected image so it fits when I cut and paste it on a different background.

Can I resize a Quick Selected image so it fits when I cut and paste it on a new background? I am trying to take a photo of someone and place it on a different background. The Quick Selected image is too big when I paste it on the background. You can only see a small portion of the persons head.

Open the photo, then go to Image>resize>image size. Read what the resolution is in px/in.
Get out of this screen. Then use one of the selection tools to select the person, go to Edit>copy to put it on the clipboard
Now, go to File>new>blank file. Enter width & height, and the same resolution value.
Go to Edit>paste. The person will be on a separate layer. Use the move tool to position, and, to resize with the corner handles, if necessary
Note: For printing, it is desirable to have the resolution in the 240-300px/in range. For web work, 72 px/in is ok

  • Vim: cutting and pasting between Terminal windows.

Has anyone else noticed in vim, that when cutting and pasting between 2 files opened in 2 separate vim sessions, each in it's own terminal.app window. that you get a lot of indentions stuffed in with the paste content? If I open both files within a single vim session by splitting the window. This is not a problem.
on other systems that I use, setting 'noai' resolves this problem. but it doesn't appear to have any effect on OS X. any suggetions?
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
Talking to yourself? Don't let this drive you insane. The difference is probably in your ~/.vimrc. In order to avoid the extra indention characters you must unset autoindent and also cindent. You may not set the cindent on the other platforms. I have it set because it's useful in composing code from scratch. However, if I want to paste indented text I have use both ":set noai" and ":set nocindent". After that pasting doesn't add any extra indention.
